In If We Burn he analyzes over a dozen movements from the Arab Spring to Occupy Wall Street to the protests in Hong Kong and Brazil to establish the conditions that create mass movements. Then he takes it a step rather, investigating why those movements have not manifested in progress and have, at times, actually preceded a political regression. In this sprawling three hour conversation we do “applied history” and try to break down what went wrong after the BLM protests of 2020 and how to prevent those failures now that we're in the middle of global protests over Israel's genocide on Gaza. CONTENT WARNING: Racialised Trauma - In this week's Black World News, Kehinde Andrews makes plain Trump's so-called assassination attempt (leaving one person dead and two wounded) and as Malcolm said of Kennedy's assassination, "it's chickens coming home to roost." However, it's not surprising as America is founded and sustained on political violence: the first violence of the genocide of native people, the second violence of enslaving us, and the third violence of kicking the British out with the American Revolutionary War. Much of the violence of the world today can be traced back to the US and Western imperialism. This is America, this is the West. This. Is. What. The System. Is.    - In this week's official guest interview, Kehinde Andrews talks with Guilaine Kinouani a leading voice in Black psychiatry, psychology, and psychosocial studies in the UK. They talk about her work as a clinician, re-traumatizing mental health systems, being dissuaded from working as a clinician as well as dealing with her own trauma as a clinician with over 15 years of research and study including her books Living While Black and White Minds. They talk about the origin story of Race Reflections which started as a blog (now a social enterprise) about not being silenced, and how it developed. They highlight the Certificate in Working with Racial Trauma training.  - Guilaine Kinouani is a UK-based Paris-born woman of Afrikan (Congolese) descent; an award-winning critical and radical psychologist and group analyst, scholar, activist, and "[she] likes to think…a bit of a fashion connoisseur." Guilaine is also a current PhD (her second doctorate!) researcher, in psychosocial studies, and founder of the social enterprise, Race Reflections.  She's written three books: Living While Black: The Essential Guide to Overcoming Racial Trauma (2021 + Guardian Book of the Year), White Minds Everyday Performance, Violence and Resistance (2023), and a third book Creative Disruption: Psychosocial Scholarship as Praxis is expected in November 2024. - BLACK WORLD NEWS LINKS The Assassination Attempt on Donald Trump and Political Violence Waged by the U.S.https://blackagendareport.com/index.php/assassination-attempt-donald-trump-and-political-violence-waged-us The Jakarta Method https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Jakarta_Method Book Review: The Jakarta Method: Washington's Anticommunist Crusade and the Mass Murder Program That Shaped Our World by Vincent Bevins https://blogs.lse.ac.uk/lsereviewofbooks/2020/07/29/book-review-the-jakarta-method-washingtons-anticommunist-crusade-and-the-mass-murder-program-that-shaped-our-world-by-vincent-bevins/ Indonesian mass killings of 1965–66 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indonesian_mass_killings_of_1965%E2%80%9366 - GUEST LINKS Certificate in Working With Racial Trauma: A Conversation With Helping Professionals (Sign Up)https://racereflections.co.uk/events/open-day-certificate-in-working-with-racial-trauma-and-race-based-injuries-using-the-foundation-of-group-analysis/ Certificate in Working With Racial Trauma: A Conversation With Helping Professionals - Prospectus https://racereflections.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/CWRT-JUNE-2024-w-dates.pdf Certificate in Working With Racial Trauma & Race Based Wounds Using the Foundation of Group Analysis – Curriculum  https://racereflections.co.uk/certificate-in-working-with-racial-trauma-race-based-wounds-using-the-foundation-of-group-analysis/ Guilaine Biographyhttps://racereflections.co.uk/about-the-author/ Living While Black The Essential Guide to Overcoming Racial Trauma https://www.penguin.co.uk/books/442992/living-while-black-by-kinouani-guilaine/9781529109436 White Minds Everyday Performance, Violence and Resistance By Guilaine Kinouanihttps://policy.bristoluniversitypress.co.uk/white-minds Epistemic homelessness | Guilaine Kinouani | TEDxUCLWomen https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MoKBLPbkB5I&embeds_referring_euri=https%3A%2F%2Fracereflections.co.uk%2F - THE HARAMBEE ORGANISATION OF BLACK UNITY NEEDS YOU Harambee Organisation of Black Unity (Marcus Garvey Centre + Nicole Andrews Community Library, Birmingham, UK)https://www.blackunity.org.uk/ CAP25 - Convention of Afrikan People - Gambia - May 17-19, 2025 (Everyone's Welcome) On Malcolm X's 100th birthday, the Harambee Organisation of Black Unity is bringing together those in Afrika and the Diaspora who want to fulfill Malcolm's legacy and build a global organization for Black people. His first book, The Jakarta Method, came out in 2020 and was named one of the year's best books by the Financial Times and NPR.  Today, we discuss his book, “If We Burn: The Mass Protest Decade and the Missing Revolution.”  From 2010 to 2020, more people participated in protests than at any other point in human history. “If We Burn” investigates why we haven't seen a significant revolutionary change from these uprisings. Join us for a conversation between Vincent Bevins and Naomi Klein on what their recent books—"If We Burn" and "Doppelganger"—can teach us about our political moment. Over the course of the past ten years mass protests of unprecedented scale swept across the entire globe. From the revolutions in Egypt and Tunisia, to the eruption of rebellions in the US in response to the police murder of George Floyd, this decade of struggle has seen some of the largest protests in history. Yet, in many cases, these struggles not only failed to achieve all of their goals, but were somehow mutated and warped into their opposites. As the crises that spurred these movements into existence continue to rage, the global right has taken advantage of the collective sense of disorientation and vertigo with a strategy of diagonalism to push their regressive policies and twisted perspectives. Digitally amplified conspiracy theories are peddled as explanations for capitalism's morbid symptoms, as the left struggles to organize an effective response. What lessons can we learn from the wave of struggles in the recent past? How should we understand the new paranoid right and their surreal mirror world? And, most importantly, how do chart a path out of the darkness? Vincent Bevins and Naomi Klein take up exactly these questions in their recent books, "If We Burn" and "Doppelganger" respectively. In June 2013, the journalist Vincent Bevins found himself covering a mass street protest in São Paulo, originally sparked by a rise in bus fares. As the tear canisters rained town and violent clashes with police began, the protesters began chanting "Love is over. Turkey is here," making a intentional connection to another uprising taking place across the world in Gezi Park in Istanbul. These parallel events, along with other major upheavals such as the Euromaidan movement in Ukraine, mark the highlights of a critical decade in modern history in which more people took place in mass protest events across the world than at any other time. And what we are left with after these disruptive, destabilizing events take place, how it reshapes the state and reconfigures political representation in the aftermath, is quite far from predictable and much less clear in terms of the public understanding of their meaning. This is the focus of Bevins' excellent new book, "If We Burn: The Mass Protest Decade and the Missing Revolution," which ambitiously presents a history of the 2010s, globally, through the lens of popular uprisings and their discontents. Bevins, who also joined the Departures podcast in 2020 to discuss his other book, "The Jakarta Method" (more relevant now than ever, read it!), explains how he wrote If We Burn with distinct openness and neutrality, which allows readers to approach the work from many angles, and draw their own understandings of how these popular uprisings so often failed to produce the outcomes that they aspired to, and what can be learned for the future.

The decade from 2010-2020 saw more mass protests around the world than at any other point in history. But why did, so often, these huge movements result in the exact opposite of what they had set out to achieve? We are joined by American writer and journalist Vincent Bevins (of The Jakarta Method) to discuss his new book, If We Burn: The Mass Protest Decade and the Missing Revolution. We have long been fans of Bevins' work, and we were delighted to be joined by him as we try to make sense of a decade of contention. From Säo Paolo to Hong Kong and from Cairo to Kyiv, the decade saw mass explosions of people taking to the streets. What were these protests about, and what did they ultimately achieve? What lessons can we learn from a decade which saw regimes topple – only to be replaced by something worse? And, most importantly, how can we finally bring Joseph Kony to justice?   Raha Jorjani is an Immigration Defense Attorney at California's first public defender Immigration Representation Unit. Because our immigration law is founded on the principle that deportation is a civil issue and not a criminal proceeding which, there are few immigration specific public defender units. This denies millions of people the basic right of public defense.    This episode covers the ideals of America and how our government is willfully disregarding its responsibility to help the people fleeing the countries we have destabilized. Raha shares her personal experience working with clients who may appear like criminals on paper but are often victims of wider circumstances enacted by our own government. To tell their story without those crucial details is not just dishonest but dehumanizing.     Raha hopes that by sharing these stories and making Americans aware of the reality of what immigrants go through, just to have the opportunity to plead their case, we can break down these antiquated systems. Her office is the first of its kind and is being replicated across the country, hopefully to one day become the standard. They don't have to justify why they imprisoned you. You have to justify why you should be free. So you have to prove why you're not a danger to the community, you have to prove that you're not a flight risk and Hunter, that's people who are eligible for bond.”  [33:40]   “The power of detention is ultimately used as a litigation tool by the Department of Homeland Security. This is one of the only areas where, if you win, you stay in.”[39:30]   “When people end up in the deportation system, it is almost always after they have been dealt with by the criminal legal system. So even to the extent that people believe in the criminal legal system and the need for accountability and punishment; the double irony is that these folks have already been through that system, so they've already served their time.” [43:40]   “Our relationships with countries define how we view people. So, if we don't agree with a certain country's position, we tend to welcome people from those countries because we basically want to further entrench the idea that what's happening there is bad. Whereas other people from other countries could be facing similar types of persecution or violence and we have very many closed door policies.”  [50:24]   Contact Hunter Parnell: hwparnell@publicdefenseless.com Instagram Twitter www.publicdefenseless.com

Episode Notes Trigger Warning for those ahead: discussions will include the violence experienced by victims of the anticommunist crusade that American empire waged against the Global South and "Third World" which may be graphic and disturbing. Indonesia, a country that today has in the realm of 270 million inhabitants, is a large island chain to the south of mainland Asia. A long and diverse history precedes the story we retell today, one of kingdoms and conflict and community formation. For us, however, we will focus on the mid twentieth century and the violent military coup (supported by the U.S. State Department and the CIA) which overthrew the elected government. Given lists of people to be eliminated for the rewards of bribes and aid from the capitalist powerhouse across the pacific, the Suharto military regime instituted a bloody terror that killed over 1 million people: targeting communists specifically but also sweeping up ethnic Chinese, feminists (declared as castrating witches), and workers in unions. The tactics developed in Indonesia - disappearances, torture and propoganda - would be copied in many other countries allied with the United States in the Cold War. Information discussed in this episode is largely drawn from Vincent Bevins' book Jakarta Method as well as the documentary The Act of Killing. Phil and Kyle would also like to give a shout out to those of us still in the streets fighting for the rights of Palestinians and those fighting for justice and abolition of the American police state. In the USA, there is a myth that “America stands for freedom across the world” and in my years of research for this podcast and blog, I have yet to find such an example. I have found many examples where the US fights to preserve capitalism at all cost. Unfortunately, a large portion of the US population has been satiated by the supply of relatively cheap goods into the US and because relatively cheap goods keep coming regularly, they do not have to “think” too much about the state of the world. In fact, it is better for the US government, if most people do not think too much about the state of the world. Because once someone starts thinking, they will investigate and the more people investigate, the less they like. By design, most Americans do not think about the state of the world. They are relatively happy imbibing these myths that have been fed to them since childhood. But because of the education system, most Americans are trained to question as little as possible. On top of it, because most Americans are paid “just not enough,” they will be working long hours where they won’t have too much time to think. Because of the US cult of “rugged individualism,” most Americans will not be able to fight back when their rights are violated. Most Americans can’t fight back because you can’t fight what you don’t know. Operation Gladio is one of those unique operations that will disturb anyone. It breaks the myth that the US stands for “Freedom across the world” because the US aligned with the worst of the world (Nazis) to fight Democracy in Italy. Operation Gladio is one of the few very well documented events that even the worst sceptic cannot find “loopholes” to argue why the US was “actually doing the right thing.” With that, air this second episode with the hope that it will spark even one person’s curiosity to learn more about the state of the world and the “Gangster Nature of the our state” as Michael Parenti would put it. A better world is possible, but we cannot fix what we don’t know. The mass murders and disappearances of suspected communists in Indonesia in the mid-1960s became the blueprint for smashing the potential of socialists gaining power in countries across the Third World during the Cold War, ensuring the maintenance of American capitalist hegemony. This week, Rupture's Michael Coleman and People Before Profit TD Paul Murphy sit down with journalist Vincent Bevins to discuss his recent book, the Jakarta Method, which dissects the Indonesian mass killings of 1965–66, the CIA's complicity in the Indonesian atrocities and how these tactics were later implemented by right-wing authoritarian governments in South and Central America with US approval. -- Rupture Radio is a weekly podcast looking at news, politics and culture from a socialist perspective. This is a public excerpt from ep32 of Habibti Please. Get access to the full conversation with Vincent Bevins at habibtiplease.substack.com/subscribe The austerity measures that were first implemented during the pandemic will not ease post-pandemic. Global vaccine apartheid continues to exist and it seems that only those in North America with relations outside of North America or to communities. It feels eerily familiar for people who straddle worlds to be aware that “back to normal” means back to normal for people completely detached from the global reality of how COVID continues to ravage people outside of the imperial core. This episode takes a look at how the world we all now came to be. One where vaccine apartheid is normalized for so many. One where extermination programs and coups are staples. In this episode Shaadie and Nashwa interview Vincent Bevins, author of the Jakarta Method. Nashwa and Shaadie approached this episode with the thought and care they approach other work with. They wanted to honor those who died and survived the mass extermination in Indonesia while also weaving our own understanding as young Muslims of the world into this episode. Bevins book Jakarta Method is an accessible must-read about the United State's role in constructing a global anti-communist network. In 1965 and 1966, the Indonesian military killed one million civilians and with praise and enthusiasm from the American government. It was an apocalyptic slaughter of leftists and accused leftists. As Bevins writes, this series of events was instrumental in shaping our global economic system as it exists today. As beneficiaries of US hegemony, it is important to recognize this gap in collective memory and the responsibilities we have.

Today we interview journalist Tim Shorrock to talk to us about privatized military intelligence, US counter-insurgency methods and his article in The Baffler called Making COIN: The Modern History of an Unstoppable Bad IdeaExamples of COINTim talks about his Cold-War upbringing in Japan and Korea during the aftermath of World War II, the Korean war and through Vietnam, explaining how it gave him an honest “introduction to American politics and American foreign policy” which led him to a career in freelance journalism with a focus on Asian Studies.Show Notes4:25-8:15Private companies are profiting at every level from military spending. In recent years we have seen an unprecedented merging of the military and private finance, “the integration of national security and business.”“The privatizing of intelligence took off in the 1990’s.”The Peace DividendFollowing the Cold War, as austerity and neoliberal budget-cuts were implemented, a wave of people previously employed in intelligence went on to work in the private sector with government contractors. In the latter years of the Clinton administration, we began to see an increase of private military contractors being used to collect intelligence in places like Bosnia and Serbia.Tim explains that after 9/11, under the false pretense of national security, billions were spent on increased military budgets, making contractors “essential parts of US military and intelligence operations”. As the Bush doctrine continued, the Washington consensus increasingly encouraged “the contracting of strategic operations.”8:15-13:05COINCounter-insurgency methods of the US:  “the people become the enemy.”Tim illustrates how a Vietnamese uprising against the US backed Diem dictatorship resulted in massive gains for the National Liberation Front (Viet Cong) and how the liberal Kennedy administration’s “hearts and minds” approach, cloaked in the language of evil, only made the violence worse: “part of the idea began to be to separate the people from the guerillas and they would build these camps for the villagers that became, essentially, concentration camps (strategic hamlets)”Many of these violent counter-insurgency methods being used by the Americans were inherited from British Imperialists who had developed these strategies in earlier suppression campaigns against Communists in Malaya in the 1950’s. Related: Listen to our interview with Stuart Schrader on the History of the Modern Police13:05 - 19:26In the first year of the Obama administration, they tried the “hearts and minds” strategy in Afghanistan. “When McMaster was a General in Iraq, he got key press from liberals”The US and their personally-picked government provides neoliberal and privatized “social services”American contractors never built the project that they were supposed to build.Inspector General nominated by congress in regards to contractors. In his first interview with a Southeast Asian podcast since the launch of his book, Vincent Bevins answers questions about the topics in "The Jakarta Method," which he wrote after extensive research and interviews with survivors throughout Latin America, Southeast Asia, and the U.S. We talk about everything from specific tactics & operations in Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Brazil, and Chile, to why narratives around these events have been so skewed, to the shrinking internationalist exchange between post-colonial countries, to developing a palate for real spicy food. The Jakarta Method The hidden story of the wanton slaughter — in Indonesia, Latin America, and around the world — backed by the United States. In 1965, the U.S. government helped the Indonesian military kill approximately one million innocent civilians. This was one of the most important turning points of the twentieth century, eliminating the largest communist party outside China and the Soviet Union and inspiring copycat terror programs in faraway countries like Brazil and Chile. But these events remain widely overlooked, precisely because the CIA's secret interventions were so successful. In this bold and comprehensive new history, Vincent Bevins builds on his incisive reporting for the Washington Post, using recently declassified documents, archival research and eye-witness testimony collected across twelve countries to reveal a shocking legacy that spans the globe. For decades, it's been believed that parts of the developing world passed peacefully into the U.S.-led capitalist system. The Jakarta Method demonstrates that the brutal extermination of unarmed leftists was a fundamental part of Washington's final triumph in the Cold War. Vincent Bevins is a journalist and the author of The Jakarta Method: Washington's Anticommunist Crusade and the Mass Murder That Shaped Our World (Hachette). But what did it take to forge this empire in the first place, and how can it be that so many Americans are unaware that this imperium even exists? In the latest episode of Failed State Update, I will be speaking with Vincent Bevins, a journalist and the author of the recently released The Jakarta Method: Washington's Anticommunist Crusade and the Mass Murder Program That Shaped Our World. Shabd has been someone who I've been following for a while and inspired me to start my own podcast, so it was great to get to know a bit more about him and I cannot thank him enough for taking the time out to talk. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★ ★ Buy this podcast a coffee ★ In this episode, we get to know a bit more about Shabd and his upbringing near Washington DC in Northern Virginia, amongst the 3HO community, his parents, who are both converts to Sikhi through 3HO, his background including his mixture of Jewish, Basque and Parisian ancestry, his attendance at Miri-Piri academy in Punjab, his further education, a period of change in his life more recently and his involvement in politics and how it took him further then he could have imagined. Did you know his mum travelled overland through Afghanistan to reach India in the 1970s? We continue and talk about how Shabd spends some of his spare time focusing on his own podcast – The One: Intersection of Sikhi/Sikh Affairs and Left/Progressive politics. How Sikhi is more than a religion, a book called the “Jakarta Method” which helps to map the American backing of the Indonesian death squads of the 1960s (resulting in the death of over a million people) and how this was part of the CIA's broader project of extinguishing the left wherever it was. Those who doubt socialism and use a lack of historical examples sometimes miss that since inception socialism has been aggressively attacked and undermined by the USA and Western powers & specifically undermined. Can Sikhs be part of a modern day military? How WWI and WII are not unrelated or disconnected from colonialism and the purpose of modern militaries. The tokenisation of Sikhs, the concept of langar and the human right of food security, the relationship of colonialism, capitalism and white supremacy. Malcolm X, truly questioning the system, the Khalsa mindset, the acceptance of death, learning and teaching and how Shabd tries to use this to keep grounded when involved in politics. We then dive into Shabd's upbringing as a Sikh, experience of the 3HO community and the cult, criminal activities and systems of abuse controlled by Yogi Bhajan. Shabd outlines his own personal journey and the importance of Kashi House's accessible production of pre-colonial Sikh history that was particularly helpful. Amongst other things, we round off the episode focusing on the 3HO community today, the entities and community of 3HO and why it is important to identify and change the systems around us. We spoke about so much more than that. More importantly, I learnt so much and thoroughly enjoyed getting to spend time talking to Shabd Singh. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

The long reach of the CIA from Latin America to Southeast Asia is discussed here in our last conversation on Vincent Bevins's The Jakarta Method as a product of its early successes in using the imperial toolkit to squash social democratic projects in Latin America, particularly Guatemala and Brazil. We also trace the patterns of anti-communist tactics through the CIA's PSYOPs and repression of leftwing parties in Southeast Asia, focusing, of course, on Indonesia from the tragic period following the September 30th Movement. We also take a critical look at Stalinist Popular Frontism and its disarming of radical parties' ability to adequately defend themselves, politically and militarily, against the coming wave of imperial brutalization. Our discussion concludes with an assessment of the balance sheet in Second and Third World countries following these historic defeats for social democratic and communist organizations in the developing and Communist world. As with other discussions in this series, our source material drew from Odd Arne Westad's The Global Cold War. We also read Eric Hobsbawm's The Age of Extremes for its detail on land reform movements in the Third World, as well as Lucien Rey's "Dossier of the Indonesian Drama," which first appeared in The New Left Review, Number 36 (March/April 1966). Our third discussion on The Jakarta Method details the methodological differences between the two wings of the CIA: the measured, "conciliatory" cosmopolitanism of Howard "Smiling" Jones vs. the loose cannon interventionism of Frank Wisner ("The Wiz"). However tactically distinct in their approaches to regime change in Indonesia during the rise of Sukarno and the Communist Party of Indonesia (PKI), both proved to have similar aims, leading ultimately to the extermination of the PKI preceding the coup d'etat of General Suharto. The music on After the ‘End of History' appears courtesy of Jason King, whose work you can find on SoundCloud.

In Part II of our episode on The Jakarta Method, we discuss the roots of the CIA-directed anticommunist massacre in Indonesia. We also trace the origins of America's anticommunist crusade during the Cold War to its very foundations as a nation, emphasizing the various cultural responses and military interventions the US pursued in the name of safeguarding liberal capitalist democracy. Topics include the development of Communist parties around the world subsequent to the Bolshevik Revolution, including the Indonesian Communist Party; the political betrayals of Stalin's "Socialism in One Country"; and how the CIA exploited divisions within the anti-colonial movement to pursue America's imperial interests in the Third World. We were thrilled to speak with Journalist Vincent Bevins on his new book, 'The Jakarta Method: Washington's Anticommunist Crusade and the Mass Murder Program that Shaped Our World' Vincent was kind enough to engage us in a wide-ranging discussion on his book, the violence perpetrated by governments in Indonesia and Brazil in collaboration with the US Government, and what past violence says about the capitalism of the present. Without shaming anyone by name, I think many in the US/UK Left, who've spoken to Vincent, would do well to study his habits, such as the level of research he puts into his work, his centering of local voices, and his promotion of local writers in Indonesia, Brazil and the other areas he's covered in his years of reporting. Here are some Indonesian Writers that Vincent mentioned as influences on his work: Grace Samboh, writer and curator Sekretariat Bersama '65, community of survivors in Solo, Central Java Baskara Wardaya, historian and Jesuit priest, Yogyakarta Taman 65, Bali survivors' organization Febriana Firdaus, journalist specializing in 1965 and West Papua (based in Jakarta) Soe Tjen Marching, writer and musician (based in London) For more on Vincent's work, you can find the Jakarta Method here: https://vincentbevins.com/book/ And his Twitter Account is: @Vinncent Beat is 'breath' by dontaskalex: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=upKWUqlR94w

Why did the word “Jakarta” appear as graffiti on the streets of Santiago in 1973? Why did left-wing Chilean activists receive postcards in the mail with the ominous message “Jakarta is coming”? Why did a Brazilian general lose his temper in an interview with university students, threaten their safety, and yell the name of Indonesia's capital city? In The Jakarta Method: Washington's Anticommunist Crusade & the Mass Murder Program that Shaped Our World (Public Affairs, 2020) journalist Vincent Bevins links the history of the overthrow of Sukarno – a leader of 1960s Third Worldism –, the rise of the Suharto – one of the most brutal and corrupt dictators – , and the slaughter of 500,000 to one million Indonesians allegedly linked to the Indonesian Community Party (the PKI) to the Latin American “dirty wars”, including Brazil, Chile, Argentina, and Central America. This is a major achievement and something that very few scholars have been able to do. Bevins persuasively argues that the long-ignored and even silenced history of Indonesia 1965 was of truly world historical significance. The Jakarta Method joins a growing body of scholarly work on what some call a “political genocide” and what a 1968 CIA report deemed “one of the worst mass murders of the 20th century”. By showing how the overthrow of the radical Sukarno, the rise of the pro-American Suharto, and the brutal destruction of the largest Communist party outside of the USSR and the PRC impacted both right-wing generals and left-wing revolutionaries from the streets of Rio de Janeiro to the jungles of Cambodia, The Jakarta Method is a much needed and very welcome globalization of this history. Vincent Bevins is a native Californian who attended UC Berkeley before he began his career as an international correspondent in Venezuela. He worked for the Financial Times in London, covered Brazil and the southern cone for the Los Angeles Times, and then moved to Jakarta where he reported on Southeast Asia for the Washington Post. He spoke to us from Sao Paulo, Brazil about The Jakarta Method. An excerpt of the book appeared in a recent issue of the New York Review of Books. Michael G. Vann is a professor of world history at California State University, Sacramento. A specialist in imperialism and the Cold War in Southeast Asia, he is the author of The Great Hanoi Rat Hunt: Empires, Disease, and Modernity in French Colonial Vietnam (Oxford, 2018). Clearly, the American Empire is clocking out — it's anybody's guess whether it will go with a whimper or with a bang, but it seems likely that we'll know the answer to that question relatively soon. As it turns out, the bloodiest and most horrific acts of American imperialism are the ones we've never heard of. Also discussed: Covid-19 as a symptom of America's collective insanity, and Russiagate as psychological projection. Vincent Bevins on Twitter: https://twitter.com/Vinncent Joseph L.
