Wednesday, 10 July 2024 Judah begot Perez and Zerah by Tamar, Perez begot Hezron, and Hezron begot Ram. Matthew 1:3 “And Judah begot Perez and Zerah from Tamar, and Perez begot Hezron, and Hezron begot Ram” (CG). It should be noted that the names in the Greek have different spellings. They are transliterated out of Hebrew and into Greek for a Greek audience. From there, the names are then translated into English. To save the trouble of remembering the names as they are recorded from both Hebrew and Greek, the same English spelling as is derived from the Old Testament will be used. However, just to see the differences in transliteration, this verse reads as follows. First the CG standard translation and then a direct transliteration from the Greek: * And Judah begot Perez and Zerah from Tamar, and Perez begot Hezron, and Hezron begot Ram. * And Ioudas begot Phares and Zara from Thamar, and Phares begot Hesróm, and Hesróm begot Aram. For clarity's sake, there is a point where translations need to be standardized. And so, the method of translating names as they are from the Old Testament will be followed. The previous verse ended with the record of the birth of “Judah and his brothers.” The listing now continues with “And Judah begot Perez and Zerah.” The name Perez means Breach or Irruption. Zerah means Rising of Light or Dawning. The record of their birth is recorded in Genesis 38 – “Now it came to pass, at the time for giving birth, that behold, twins were in her womb. 28 And so it was, when she was giving birth, that the one put out his hand; and the midwife took a scarlet thread and bound it on his hand, saying, ‘This one came out first.' 29 Then it happened, as he drew back his hand, that his brother came out unexpectedly; and she said, ‘How did you break through? This breach be upon you!' Therefore his name was called Perez. 30 Afterward his brother came out who had the scarlet thread on his hand. And his name was called Zerah.” Genesis 38:27-30 These two children were born to the union between Judah and his daughter-in-law, the narrative of which is found entirely in Genesis 38. From there, Matthew continues by noting these two were, “from Tamar.” Tamar means Palm. It is a symbol of being upright, and so a secondary meaning of Righteous is not out of the question. That can be inferred from Judah's proclamation found in Genesis 38 – “So Judah acknowledged them and said, ‘She has been more righteous than I, because I did not give her to Shelah my son.' And he never knew her again.” Genesis 38:26 Judah was making a pun based upon her name, Palm, and the upright nature of the palm that matched her righteousness in the matter he was speaking of. Tamar descended from Canaan, the son of Ham cursed by Noah – “So Noah awoke from his wine, and knew what his younger son had done to him. 25 Then he said: ‘Cursed be Canaan; A servant of servants He shall be to his brethren.'” Genesis 9:24, 25 Next, Matthew continues the line leading to Christ, saying, “and Perez begot Hezron.” Hezron means something like Enclosure, Cluster, or Village. His inclusion in the genealogical record is first seen in the genealogy of David recorded in Ruth 4:18. He is also noted in 1 Chronicles 2:9. Next, Matthew records “and Hezron begot Ram.” Ram means High or Exalted. He is first recorded in Ruth 4:19. He is also noted in 1 Chronicles 2:9. Life application: It may seem surprising that Jesus descended from Canaan, a son cursed by Noah. And more, it may seem incredible that He descended from an incestuous union between Judah and the woman descended from Canaan. However, God is making it clear that even from what is seemingly the basest of people and conduct He can turn such things into something wonderful. There are claims that certain races and groups of people are cursed and of no value. But this is not true. What makes people worth nothing isn't who they descend from but how they treat themselves and the world around them. A person may descend from a godly line, reject his heritage, and turn out to be a total loser. On the other hand, a person may descend from a prostitute or a murderer and turn to the Lord with all his heart and soul, being known by God as a man of faith. We must evaluate our circumstances in life and decide if we will let the world around us overcome us or if we will rise above the things that are there to pull us down and degrade us as humans. The choice is ours and so let us consider the right path, pursue the Lord God with all our hearts and souls, and be willing to put aside every weight that hinders us. Let us run the race directly into the arms of Jesus by living lives of faith and acting out our faith in good works that will receive great rewards on the day we come before Him. Lord God, we are so grateful to You for Jesus. Because of Him, we are not limited to living out lives of vanity or hopelessness. Instead, we can overcome this world and be a part of the glory that lies ahead for those redeemed by His precious blood. Thank You, O God, for Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Do you ever see flocks of birds in your yard that show up in droves one year, but are completely absent the next? Some nomadic species such as Pine Siskins move based on the availability of food and habitat. It's called “irruptive” migration, and it sometimes leads to backyards full of siskins. While these flocks are a delight for bird watchers, the dense groups can easily transmit diseases such as salmonellosis.More info and transcript at BirdNote.org. Want more BirdNote? This is episode #27 of the podcast and it's Thursday, the 17th of November, 2022. My invited speaker today is Dr. Mark James, a philosopher and theoretical cognitive scientist who adopts an embodied approach to questions about the development of habits in both individuals and collectives. Specifically, he is interested in how the designed world shapes such habits, and how we can leverage this understanding to address questions of well-being. More recently, Mark has begun researching how psychological flexibility, our ability to switch between habits, is scaffolded by our bodies and environments. Mark hosts the Connectomics podcast, wherein he speaks with theorists and practitioners about the intersection of embodied cognitive science, culture, technology and design. Mark is also a meditator, musician and martial artist, and a lover of good stories. We started the show talking about his journey in this field and then delved deeper into aspects of Embodied Cognitive Science and its methodologies. We also looked into ways of studying subjective experience scientifically, and debated if subjective experience can be intersubjectively verified. Mark also elaborated Tom Froese's proposal for an Irruption Theory of Consciousness, a new theory of consciousness that integrates an embodied-enactive account of basic mind with radical formulations of the freedom and efficacy of intentional agency. The second part of the interview covered the future of digital technologies (including immersive technologies like mixed reality and artificial intelligence) — and if/how they can be (re)shaped by embodied cognitive science. Here is the show.Show Notes:- Embodied Cognitive Science - definition and methodologies- The scientific study of subjective experience - Can subjective experience be intersubjectively verified?- Tom Froese's proposal for an Irruption Theory of Consciousness- The future of digital technologies (including immersive technologies like MR and AI) The Connectomics podcast - https://podcasts.apple.com/ie/podcast/connectomics/id1606319926www.markmjames.com

I often feel that new words come to me at the exact right moment. This fall, I had one of those moments of synchronicity, when I began to see the word "irruption" in various places - a word that until then was unfamiliar to me.
tl/dr: Ship Thieves have a new album out on Chunksaah and it rules and we talked to Chris Wollard and Chad Darby for a couple hours and it was super fun and important and memorable. To say that I'm a big fan of both of these guests is to vastly understate things. Not only do Chris Wollard and Chad Darby separately occupy important roles in a couple of my favorite bands of all time (obviously Hot Water Music and Samiam if you're keeping score at home), together they've been half of the grossly-underrated Gainesville band Ship Thieves for just over a decade. If you're not familiar with the history, here's a brief retelling: back around 2008/2009, Hot Water Music's Chris Wollard put together a side project that was never intended to be a "real band." He got together with Addison Burns and a few other buddies and recorded a handful of songs at a handful of locations and put out an album known as Chris Wollard + The Ship Thieves back in 2009 on No Idea Records. Fast forward a couple years, and a lineup that included Wollard, Burns, Chad Darby on bass and Bobby Brown on drums had solidified, and collectively they put out the second Chris Wollard + The Ship Thieves album, "Canyons," in 2012. It was a little more riff-rock oriented than the occasionally-acoustic debut album that came before it. By 2016's "No Anchor," the lineup remained not only intact but had developed its own identity and direction, thus Wollard's decision to drop his name from the title and have the project carry on as Ship Thieves. 2021 brings with it the release of "Irruption." The band has found a home on a new label, Chunksaah Records, a label run by the inimitable Kate Hilts and the Bouncing Souls camp. It continues down the musical road that the band was headed down on "No Anchor," and in many ways it does all of the things that "No Anchor" did, only it does them better. The rhythm section of Darby and Brown is as tight as ever, and Darby's bass grooves move in ways we hadn't heard from this outfit before. Burns also moves to the front to take on co-vocal duties on a few tracks, his smoother delivery a noted contrast from Wollard's trademark gravel-throated tones. The band had a lot of fun making the album, and that is evident in spades throughout the duration of the couple hours that we were lucky enough to chat with Wollard and Darby. This was one for the baby book (we still have that, right mom?). "Irruption" is out March 12th and you can theoretically pre-order it on vinyl, except that all the options are presently sold out. There's other new Ship Thieves merch here though: https://www.coldcutsmerch.com/collections/chunksaahrecords

Individual ideologies and theologies give us incomplete pictures of reality. The world is too complex. No Ideology or theology can explain everything. Every ideology and every theology overlooks or misses something. There is always something that resists symbolization. This is the view of Slovenian philosopher Slovoj Zizek who I have accessed primarily through a book called “The End of Evangelicalism? Discerning a New Faithfulness for Mission Towards an Evangelical Political Theology” by David E. Fitch. An “irruption of the real” occurs when someone takes the beliefs and tenets of his or her faith or ideology to the extreme. Jesus did this when he put his life on the line because he believed that the one and all-powerful God of Israel would save him, overthrow the rulers and authorities of this world, redeem and restore Israel to its rightful place among the nations, and take dominion over the world (Mark 14:62 and 15:34). The truth is suddenly revealed often in a humiliating fashion so that people are forced to confront the fact that what they thought would happen, what they believed, didn’t come to pass, at least not as they expected. This is the story of the Gospels. The disciples expect the Messiah to be a victorious king who would defeat Israel’s enemies (Mark 10:37). Something amazing did happen, but it wasn’t what they expected. That something was the resurrection and the rise of the Jesus movement. Not all “irruptions of the Real” are victorious as the resurrection. Most end in humiliation and the reexamination and reformulation of one’s beliefs. Without the resurrection, Jesus’s ministry would have ended the same way, another prophet and martyr killed by the authorities (Mark 15:34). But that’s not what happened. Some of Jesus’s followers, including Peter and James, had visions of Jesus after his death (1 Corinthians 15:5). This led them to believe that God had raised Jesus from the dead. On this show, we examine Fitch’s concept of an “irruption of the Real” and apply it to the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth. We will talk about Zizek’s concepts of “master signifiers” and “sublime objects” and the role they play in motivating us to organize around ideologies and beliefs. Fitch, an Evangelical himself, uses Zizek to demonstrate how some Evangelical beliefs became disconnected from what they meant generations ago and now fail to serve God’s mission in the world. https://modernlectionaries.blogspot.com/2019/04/irruption-of-real-resurecton-of-jesus.html
