Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for September 5, 2023 is: ambiguous • am-BIG-yuh-wus • adjective To describe something as ambiguous is to say that it can be understood in more than one way or that it has more than one possible meaning. // We were confused by the ambiguous wording of his message. See the entry > Examples: “There are a lot of reasons for medical errors: inexperienced caregivers; ambiguous symptoms; understaffed hospitals, underlying conditions.” — Jeffrey Kluger, Time, 26 July 2023 Did you know? Ambiguous may highlight the vague and obscure, but its origins are as clear as a bell. This word comes from the Latin verb ambigō or ambigere, meaning “to be undecided; to dispute,” which in turn combines amb- (“on both sides”) with agere (“to be in motion”). Ambi- is a prefix to many English words denoting two or more options, such as ambivalent, ambidextrous, and ambient. Similar prefixes include bi- (as in bicentennial), di- (as in dialect), and multi- (as in multiverse).

Based on Lost Moon: The Perilous Voyage of Apollo 13, a book by astronaut Jim Lovell and journalist Jeffrey Kluger, it tells the true story of the failed Apollo 13 lunar landing mission. Apollo 13 was a huge success on its release making over $355 million worldwide and was nominated for nine Oscars (winning for Best Film Editing and Best Sound) but did it win over Meg who doesn't like films set in space and space jargon? Recommendability scores were high for Apollo 13, even from Meg but lower for repeat viewing due to the docudrama/real-life story and small screen giving an overall rating of 3.46.   [supsystic-tables id=251]   Episode #239 Crew Links Thanks to Episode #239 Crew of Francesca Turauskis (@FranticT) and Meg Rozfozz (@megrozfozz) from On The Outside Find their Websites online at https://twitter.com/SYA_Podcast And at https://francescaturauskis.wixsite.com/freelance And at https://twitter.com/nftsdigital And at https://linktr.ee/megrozfozz   Please make sure you give them some love More about Apollo 13 For more info on Apollo 13, you can visit  Apollo 13 IMDb page here or Apollo 13 Rotten Tomatoes page here.   Final Plug! Watch life meet art, as Stott brings her experience to bear on Kluger's imagination. Kluger's plot centers around Walli Beckwith, a model astronaut who graduated at the top of her class from the Naval Academy, had a successful career flying fighter jets, and has spent more than 300 days in space. So when she refuses to leave her post aboard the International Space Station following an accident that forces her fellow astronauts to evacuate, her American and Russian colleagues are mystified. For Walli, her decision is all too clear and terrifying to worry about ruining her career. She is stuck in a race against time to save a part of the world that has been forgotten, plus the life of the person she loves most. She will go to any length necessary, using the only tool she has, to accomplish what she knows is right. These days, you can get by without ever leaving your home – which is a nightmare for victims battling domestic abuse or sexual assault. A recent report calls domestic abuse within the larger pandemic the “shadow pandemic”. Backed by data, Jeffrey Kluger's reporting points out that U.S. police departments are reporting increases in domestic abuse calls in the double-digits. Only when the lockdown restrictions lift, will the full scope of its impact on in-home violence be known. This week, we're celebrating International Women's Day and shining the “On Crisis” spotlight on a non-profit victim service agency in one of the most rural parts of America -- Pennsylvania's mountain country. Called CAPSEA, its small but mighty staff led by Billie Jo Weyant has been pummeled with steep surges in crisis calls, shelter placement needs and trauma therapy as mostly women and children battle an increase in domestic abuse and sexual assault.  Founded 40 years ago, we talk with Billie Jo about how the pandemic has stretched her agency's resources and the opportunity within this reality to tell its heroic story of helping victims live a safe and healthy life.

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for September 26, 2020 is: emollient • ih-MAHL-yunt • noun : something that softens or soothes Examples: "It was a nasal emollient called Ponaris. It was once, the packaging advertised, a NASA staple—included in the agency's medical space kit on every Apollo mission.… The package promised that it would help rose fever, which I'd become convinced I had gotten from all that potpourri, so I bought it." — Chantel Tattoli, The Strategist, 18 May 2020 "The good news is it's not impossible or even terribly hard to mix up some of your own hand sanitizer. Commercial variants are little more than a whole lot of ordinary alcohol and a generous dollop of some kind of emollient to keep the skin from drying out." — Jeffrey Kluger, Time, 1 Apr. 2020 Did you know? Emollient derives from the present participle of the Latin verb emollire, which, unsurprisingly, means "to soften or soothe." Emollire, in turn, derives ultimately from mollis, meaning "soft." Another descendant of mollis is mollify (essentially meaning "to make softer in temper or disposition"). A more distant relative is mild, which can be traced back to the same ancient source as mollis. The adjective emollient first appeared in print in English in the early 1600s; the noun arrived on the scene soon after.

News outlets hang on data and unfortunately that means they hang on death counts. The nature of modern news means these figures feel inescapable; push notifications for every new case can feel like the virus is moving closer and closer to where you live and work even if the risk remains relatively low. Compound this with the firehose of information and misinformation on the social internet and you have a breeding ground for fear and anxiety. It's easy to feel helpless in the face of something so devastating, uncontrollable, and seemingly invisible. One thing I know about me and news coverage is that my mind, especially when anxious anyway, can catastrophise very quickly. […] News operates like an anxiety disorder. It gravitates to despair. – Matt Haig on Twitter What people fear most about tragedy is its randomness - a taxi cab jumps the curb and hits a pedestrian, a gun misfires and kills a bystander. Better to have some rational cause and effect between incident and injury. And if cause and effect aren't possible, better that there at least be some reward for all the suffering. – Jeffrey Kluger writing in TIME If, like hundreds of other people right now, the headlines are worrying you or you're struggling to come to terms with exactly what's going on, then here are just three things that have helped me… Follow the advice. This will vary by country and even by local authority but in the UK the advice is currently to wash your hands as frequently as you feel you need to and steer clear of anyone displaying any flu-like symptoms. If you are symptomatic, isolate yourself, and call 111. The Guardian The Economist BBC News Podcasts The Globalist and The Briefing from Monocle 24 Break numbers into percentages and rationalise them. As of writing this, less than 100 people in the UK are known to be afflicted with the virus. That's less than 0.0001% of the UK's population. Zero people in the UK have died. There may be nearing 100,000 cases worldwide but a lot of them are resolved, over 80,000 of them are still in China, and most people who are infected ultimately survive. The odds are in your favour. On today's Bible Answer Man broadcast from (01/14/20), Hank brings up an example of “fake news” in the science field. A recent article from Time Magazine titled “NASA May Have Found the Goldilocks Planet of Goldilocks Planets: TOI 700 d” by Jeffrey Kluger reports on a claim made by NASA that they have discovered an Earth-sized planet in the habitable zone of a hospitable star. But as Hank points out, the article itself seems to contradict the title. In the article, we read that the planet orbits a red dwarf star, and is tidally locked—meaning that the same face of the planet remains facing the sun at all times. Both of these issues would prevent such a planet from being habitable for life. Hank goes over these issues and more and explains why we truly live on a privileged planet.Hank also answers the following questions:I feel ripped between Protestantism, Eastern Orthodoxy, and Roman Catholicism and I'm not sure which one to stick with. Can you advise me?I am having trouble trusting God; I read about His love, but I don't feel it personally. Do you have any wisdom on the nature of God as it relates to me?

While his father worked as a Boeing engineer developing the Saturn V rocket, as a young boy Parazynski traveled the earth with his parents and was educated worldwide before returning stateside to earn his medical degree before training at NASA. In THE SKY BELOW Parazynski gives readers a front row seat to his seventeen year career at NASA: his training, leading the first ever US-Russian space-walk and taking us inside the “family escort” role astronauts solemnly perform for each other when disaster strikes Columbia. The climax of his space career comes with a mission that many regard as one of the most dangerous and challenging ever performed. The story of Apollo 8 begins in August 1968. NASA was losing the space race with Russia, with earliest estimates of going to the moon still more than two years in the future, and President Kennedy's promise to put a man on the moon by the end of the decade was sure to be broken. The United States was deep into the Cold War and in the middle of a year of violence abroad and at home: Vietnam, the assassinations of Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy, the Democratic convention in Chicago descending into violence. Then, in the midst of all of that turmoil NASA scrapped their meticulous mission schedules and asked astronauts Frank Borman, Jim Lovell and Bill Anders to orbit the moon, and they would do it in just four months despite the substantial risks, the Apollo 8 mission, equal parts fearless and reckless, ingenious and impulsive – told in APOLLO 8: THE THRILLING STORY OF THE FIRST MISSION TO THE MOON written by science editor and senior writer for Time Jeffrey Kluger, also the co-author of the bestselling book APOLLO 13, on which the beloved film is based.Astronaut, aviation history, NASA, Apollo 8, the Cold War, The Right Stuff, all on The Halli Casser-Jayne Show. Then, in the midst of all of that turmoil NASA scrapped their meticulous mission schedules and asked Frank Borman, Jim Lovell and Bill Anders to orbit the moon, and they would do it in just four months despite the substantial risks, the Apollo 8 mission, equal parts fearless and reckless, ingenious and impulsive – told in APOLLO 8: THE THRILLING STORY OF THE FIRST MISSION TO THE MOON written by science editor and senior writer for Time Jeffrey Kluger, also the co-author of the bestselling book APOLLO 13, on which the beloved film is based.Aviation history, Charles Lindbergh, NASA, Apollo 8, the Cold War, astronauts all on The Halli Casser-Jayne Show. Gaslighting Narcissist? Top 10 Signs You're Being Manipulated in a Toxic Relationship How do you know if you're being gaslighted by a toxic narcissist? Could it be emotional abuse? According to Jeffrey Kluger, "Narcissism falls along the axis of what psychologists call personality disorders, one of a group that includes antisocial, dependent, histrionic, avoidant and borderline personalities. But by most measures, narcissism is one of the worst, if only because the narcissists themselves are so clueless." If you've ever had a friend, family member or co-worker who is a narcissist or who suffers from narcissistic personality disorder (NPD), chances are you have been the victim of gaslighting, which is a manipulation technique they often employ to get what they want. The official definition of gas·light is to manipulate (someone) by psychological means into questioning their own sanity. In this video, I'll share the top 10 signs of gaslighting by a narcissist and give you an idea of how to cope. Knowledge is the first step to changing the situation! Have you ever been the victim of gaslighting? How would you tell a friend to handle a toxic relationship that involves gaslighting? Share your thoughts and experiences in the comments section, below! Time Magazine’s cover story on parental favoritism got to me.  I literally argued out loud with the author while reading.  It seemed only fare to have him on the show so we could argue in person.  Jeffrey Kluger, author of the new book The Sibling Effect: What the Bonds Among Brothers and Sisters Reveal About Us, and an editor and science reporter at Time, will be our guest to talk about siblings, favoritism, birth order, ideal spacing, and lots more. Birth Order, favoritism, spacing between children, sibling rivalry, preference for sons.   Support the show (https://creatingafamily.org/donation/)

Tune in at endpolionow.org. The event will feature a global status update on the fight to end polio, the challenges that remain, and how private citizens, corporations, and non-profits can join in the historic final push.” “I’ll be sharing my polio story and viewers will learn how we can end this disease forever,” she says. She will be joined, she says, by the following people at the event: Season 5 winner of NBC’s singing competition “The Voice,” Tessanne Chin Musician Ziggy Marley, who will play a song dedicated to World Polio Day from location on-tour Dr. James Alexander, senior medical epidemiologist at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Bernadette Hendrickx from Sanofi Pasteur, the largest manufacturer of polio vaccine and World Polio Day event co-sponsor TIME Magazine science and technology editor Jeffrey Kluger. Like it or not, the nature of our society and of our culture today is focused inward.  Walk down any urban street, vs. 40 years ago and instead of looking out, we’re look down or inward.  At our phones, our images, at our own world.  In a culture where self branding is celebrated, where selfies rule and Millennials are self absorbed, is it any wonder that narcissism seems rampant? But is this just a societal phase, resulting in the kind of prolonged adolescence that A.O. Scott talked about in his NY Times essay, or is it a clinical epidemic that needs more serious attention? Jeffrey Kluger examines these changes in The Narcissist Next Door: Understanding the Monster in Your Family, in Your Office, in Your Bed,in Your World. My conversation with Jeffrey Kluger:

Now Dan has produced his first novel in the form of novella "Snow Day". As one reviewer put it... This story was gripping and I felt an immediate empathy with the main character. I had to keep reading to find out what happened to him. Will definitely look for more from this author.”
