Zibby chats with author Jennifer Lang about her lyrical, poignant, and funny memoir, LANDED: A Yogi's Memoir in Pieces & Poses. Jennifer describes how her book is a reckoning—both on and off the yoga mat—with her adopted country of Israel, her cross-cultural marriage to a Frenchman, her merciless midlife hormones, and her imminent empty next. She opens up about the emotional toll of navigating home and belonging and also about releasing a book amid rising antisemitism and the ongoing war.Purchase on Bookshop: https://bit.ly/3XWprpTShare, rate, & review the podcast, and follow Zibby on Instagram @zibbyowens! In today's episode I interviewed Jennifer Lang. A mama of two and a mindfulness coach. Although it had been a while since I have recorded a podcast episode, I felt eager to share this one with all of you. Jennifer reached out to share her Regulated Mama course with me. I was immediately drawn to Jennifer's down to earth, approachable, and relatable content. I've been wanting for moms to have access to a program that helps them learn foundational skills for emotional regulation to support mental health. Hence why I was drawn to The Regulated Mama. I decided to record my interview with Jennifer so that you, the listener, can get a good sense of the quality of instruction and presence that Jennifer brings. We talk about her journey to becoming a mama and how she 'lost access to her tools' as a former dedicated yogi who had a solid meditation practice. She lost this practice after the birth of her children. We spoke about birth trauma and her journey of recovery. As well, Jennifer guided me through a practice to identify your 'baseline breath'. This practice is something you can do and in 5 min, I felt regulated and calm. Full transparency: I decided to partner with Jennifer Lang to help her promote her course. You can purchase her program at 50% using the link below. Her course is affordable (less than a therapy session), digestible, and offers bite-sized exercises that any mom can do throughout the day (with baby and child in arms). The Regulated Mama is a mindfulness and self-regulation program tailored specifically for mothers, designed to empower them with practical tools to support mental and emotional well-being. With a background in trauma support, mental health, chronic pain management, brain injury rehabilitation, yoga, and meditation, I developed this course to offer mothers accessible, trauma-informed practices that can be easily integrated into busy routines to help manage anxiety, lift mood, and cultivate a sense of calm and presence. Here's what the course provides: Self-regulation and grounding tools to support calm during challenging moments, Mindfulness practices to help manage anxiety and elevate mood, Simple techniques to create moments of presence amidst the demands of motherhood. The Regulated Mama > CLICK HERE to start the course To book an intake call with one our therapists > CLICK HERE About Jennifer Lang: A mom of two, living in Rankin Inlet, Nunavut. Her journey into motherhood followed a life-changing experience with trauma during an advanced meditation retreat. Healing through somatic experiencing therapy, she dove deeply into understanding the nervous system and the unique ways trauma impacts us. This journey also led her to work with first responders experiencing PTSD, and eventually, into combining these essential tools into The Regulated Mama, a course that supports mothers in finding the practices that best fit their unique nervous systems in a light, compassionate way.

Episode 441 - Jennifer Lang - Places We Left Behind, commitment and compromise, faith and familyAn American-French-Israeli hybrid, I write about identity, language, home. While raising kids in the San Francisco Bay Area at the dawning of the internet, I worked as copy editor/editor/content writer for BabyCenter, PlanetRx, and many other now obsolete .coms. But I dreamed of seeing my name on paper, in print, eventually writing for Parenting, Parents, Natural Solutions, Scholastic, Woman's Day, Real Simple. Then, in the early 2000s, something else caught my eye: the back-page essays. Who were these first-person voices and how did they tell such moving stories? Curious and on the opposite coast, I enrolled in a creative nonfiction class: one, which led to another, and then another, finally culminating in my MFA in Writing from Vermont College of Fine Arts. Thank you so much to each of my mentors for teaching me something different and dear, for bolstering me to walk this path as writer. When American-born Jennifer falls in love with French-born Philippe during the First Intifada in Israel, she understands their relationship isn't perfect. Both 23, both Jewish, they lead very different lives: she's a secular tourist, he's an observant immigrant. Despite their opposing outlooks on two fundamental issues—country and religion—they are determined to make it work. For the next 20 years, they root and uproot their growing family, each longing for a singular place to call home. In Places We Left Behind, Jennifer puts her marriage under a microscope, examining commitment and compromise, faith and family while moving between prose and poetry, playing with language and form, daring the reader to read between the lines.Distributed through Ingram, the book is available on Vine Leaves Press store, Amazon, Bookshop, Barnes & Noble, and more.In a book club? Today's episode features my interview with Jennifer Lang. Her memoir, Places We Left Behind, is a marvel of brevity and form. It's the story of how one woman, a hybrid of American-French-Israeli identities, navigates cultural and religious differences with her husband over the course of three decades, as her family searches for what it means to find a sense of home.In our interview, Jennifer shares how she transformed a “long-winded, boring, and flat” 90,000-word draft into a concise and sharp 14,000-word memoir told through a fragmented structure—what she's calling a “memoir-in-miniature.” She also addresses the critical feedback from a developmental editor, which helped her uncover an innovative structure. Finally, we talk about writing about other”: the emotional and creative negotiations involved in writing about her husband and their marriage, revealing how this process has both challenged and strengthened their relationship.----------------------"I had a very traditional manuscript of over 90,000 words when all was said and done. And it was really long-winded and boring and flat, and I hated it…I hired a developmental editor who gave me a lot of feedback. And one of the last things she said was, put it away for a while. Just let all of this sink in. And I think that was the best advice she gave me."----------------------KEY TAKEAWAYS* Transformation Through Editing: Jennifer Lang's journey from a 90,000-word manuscript to a 14,000-word concise and effective memoir underscores the fact that it can take time to figure out to figure out your story, and that brevity can be a crucial factor to remember.* Cultural Identity and Belonging: The memoir reflects Jennifer's complex relationship with her Jewish identity and her experiences living in California, France, and Israel.* Marriage and Memoir Writing: Writing about others is one of the most fraught areas of memoir for a reason. And writing about intimate relationships requires especially careful consideration. In Jennifer's case, it ended up unexpectedly strengthening the bond with her husband.* Innovative Structure & Form: The fragmented, playful structure of Jennifer's memoir, with elements like strike-throughs and “chapterettes” as she likes to call them, adds a unique layer of engagement and depth to her storytelling.* Literary Community Engagement: Jennifer's work with the Israel Writer Studio highlights the importance of community in a place with fewer English-language writers.----------------------"The level of pain, trauma, loss is so beyond. I don't know how we're going to get out of it." —about the impact of Oct 7, 2023 on the Israeli psyche----------------------NOTABLE QUOTES"I have been writing around it for years, if not decades. I have been writing about longing, belonging, culture, language, community, other, and home. In short, in long, in essay, in short, memoir, in flash. I just kept going around and around and finally had time to figure out how to get through it." (0:02:50)"I really feel like the story of me bouncing between cultures starts way back. Like kindergarten way back." (0:03:46)"I think that when we write long or when we write without any kind of constraint, we are lazy with our word choice. And so putting the constraint on makes a writer understand that every word counts." (0:21:16)"If you're going to reveal a character's underbelly, you have to reveal your own. If you're going to fault a character for their flaw, you have to do the same for yourself." (0:24:01)"I think I did anything but make him a villain. I think in the end, it's like a love letter." So many writers start out by taking one step - perhaps it's submitting an article or blogging - before they set out to write a book, especially memoir, and Jennifer's path and insights are a reminder to keep following that little nudge and taking it a step at a time as you write and share your voice. It's about the journey, not the destination, so if you're feeling like you're behind, let this conversation with Jennifer reassure you that you're making progress. In Places We Left Behind, Jennifer puts her marriage under a microscope, examining commitment and compromise, faith and family while moving between prose and poetry, playing with language and form, daring the reader to read ~~between the lines~~. Jennifer Lang is a medical doctor specializing in obstetrics and gynecology. Alongside her professional expertise, she is a mother to three children aged 14, 13, and 11. Jennifer's debut book, titled "The Whole 9 Months: A Week-by-Week Pregnancy Guide with Recipes for a Healthy Start," was driven by her strong belief in the transformative power of food during pregnancy. She firmly advocates for adopting healthy eating habits during this crucial time to establish a lifelong foundation of well-being for children. Jennifer's aim is to inspire expectant mothers and their families to approach pregnancy with heightened mindfulness and a commitment to self-care. She emphasizes the role parents play as influential figures for their little ones, acknowledging that the journey towards nutritious dietary choices commences even before birth. As Jennifer's own children grow, she has increasingly recognized the paramount importance of providing them with the necessary knowledge to develop a positive and healthy relationship with their bodies, as well as with others. Motivated by this realization, she penned her latest book, "Consent: Every Teen's Guide to Healthy Sexuality." Jennifer perceives a lack of accessible resources that address comprehensive sexual education while centering on the essential aspect of every sexual interaction, consent. She believes that teaching teenagers about the significance of mutual, active, affirmative, and enthusiastic consent is pivotal as they embark on their path of self-discovery and transition into young adulthood.Visit the show notes for more: https://www.BelovedHolistics.com/podcast/129Learn More & Connect with Jennifer:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drjenniferlang/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/jennifer.lang.9440Twitter: https://twitter.com/JenniferLangMDSponsorship made possible by:AHCC - code BELOVED for 10% off on Immune IntelBIRTHFIT - code BELOVED to get one month FREE in their B! Dr. Jennifer Lang, an obstetrician and gynecologist with a specialty in gynecologic oncology, shares how her experience of surrendering to the authority of her own body's wisdom during her natural birth radically changed her approach to obstetrics. This is a potentially scary topic for parents. I have a young teenager and I know that having this conversation early is key. But talking to those weirdos about anything is difficult enough. Having an important and frank conversation with a teen about sex can be downright unnerving. For both parties. But it’s CRITICAL. This is where my guest, Dr. Jennifer Lang comes in. Her book, Consent: The New Rules of Sex Education: Every Teen's Guide to Healthy Sexual Relationships gives you the tools to communicate with teens about a very daunting-yet-critical subject. Teens are already thinking about sex, whether they’re sexually active or not. Empowering them to identify and then articulate their needs and boundaries is critical. They also need to recognize that their partners’ boundaries must be discussed and respected at all times. Anyone who’s sexually active (or plans to be), must understand that consent is NOT a binding contract and they and/or their partners are allowed to change their minds at any time and for any reason. Period. I hope this conversation with Dr. Lang gives parents and guardians the tools to talk to kids about the importance of consent — regardless of their sex, sexual identity or gender identification. This book is written for everyone. Then stick around for our newest Screw Confession, which was submitted by a new listener. This story is absolutely hilarious.
