Tune in for a conversation with the crew you won't want to miss! Jimmie Fails IV, a black man, is a third generation San Franciscan. Having been pushed out by circumstances like many others, Jimmie, who works a low paying job as a nurse in a seniors' care facility, returned to San Francisco three years ago and has been living in his best friend Montgomery Allen's house that he shares with his blind grandfather, Jimmie who sleeps on the floor in Mont's already cramped bedroom. Despite the house, Mont's situation is not much better than Jimmie's, Mont who works at a supermarket fish counter while he sketches and writes a play on the side. Other black people around him who are showing their anger in also being disenfranchised from San Francisco life are the soapbox preacher who Jimmie and Mont often watch as they wait for the bus, and a group of young black men who hang outside of Mont's house. All of Jimmie's family, whom he rarely sees, are also disenfranchised from that San Francisco life in one way or another: his estranged father lives in an SRO (Single Room Occupancy); his mother and her new husband long moved to Los Angeles; and his paternal Auntie Wanda has been pushed out to the suburbs. Jimmie has long wanted to reclaim what he sees as his place in San Francisco, which to him means the house he grew up in and which his same named paternal grandfather built in the post-war era in a style indicative to the area a century earlier. The problems are that his father lost the house long ago, the neighborhood has since been gentrified from the immigrant neighborhood it once was, increasing the value of the house to the several millions, and a white couple currently lives there, there being no indication that they are either planning on leaving or selling even if Jimmie could afford it. Regardless, Jimmie, with Mont by his side, has and continues to take steps to reclaim the house as his to his standards.—Huggo In this episode of the TruVue Podcast, we give an honest review of the movie "The Last Man In San Francisco." The Last Black Man in San Francisco’.

0. San Francisco (met Daniel Herskedal) 1'55” 1. That's the Movie Club theme for December 2019: Through the Cracks. Jonathan and Corey each picked two films that were released officially in 2019 that they missed for one reason or another. As far as the podcast goes, each episode features an in-depth review of the movie for the week. They begin with a spoiler-free review before diving in completely after the needed spoiler warning. However, before getting into the review of the week, Jonathan and Corey discuss what other movies they've seen since the last episode as well as anything else they feel like discussing. To help them decide which of the many films to watch each month they started creating themes for them all. Week 1: The Last Black Man in San Francisco (2019) Corey had first pick and went with the reliable A24 films. The Last Black Man in San Francisco (2019) was released in June, but neither Corey nor Jonathan was able to see it while it was out. Directed by Joe Talbot and co-written by him and the lead Jimmie Fails, the movie has a few notable stars in a few smaller roles like Danny Glover, Finn Wittrock, and Mike Epps. The Last Black Man in San Francisco is a 2019 American drama film directed and produced by Joe Talbot (his feature directorial debut) based on a story by Jimmie Fails and Talbot (which, in turn, is partly based on Fails' own life). It stars Fails, Jonathan Majors, Danny Glover, Tichina Arnold, Rob Morgan, Mike Epps and Finn Wittrock. The plot centers on the efforts of an African-American man, Jimmie, to reclaim his childhood home, a Victorian house in the Fillmore District. It had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on January 26, 2019, where it won awards for Best Directing and a Special Jury Prize for Creative Collaboration. It was released on June 7, 2019, by A24 in the United States. Talbot and Fails grew up together in San Francisco and first discussed the possibility of making the movie as teenagers. In May of 2015, the two shot a preview trailer to raise funds for the making of the film and launched a successful Kickstarter campaign that ultimately surpassed their goal of $50,000 by more than $25,000. Within a month, 1,500 contributors backed the campaign totaling a little over $75,000. The campaign garnered film industry interest as well as national press, and through viral success cemented Fails, who was the face of the #lastblackman fundraising campaign, as a local San Francisco figure. In May 2018, it was announced Jonathan Majors, Danny Glover, Tichina Arnold, Rob Morgan, Mike Epps, Finn Wittrock and Thora Birch had joined the cast of the film, with Khaliah Neal producing the film. Plan B Entertainment produced the film, while A24 distributed it. Following a Best Director win at Sundance, Joe Talbot discusses his film The Last Black Man in San Francisco, along with its star Jimmie Fails. Based on Jimmie Fail's own life, it's about his attempt to reclaim the house his grandfather built in the heart of San Francisco. At the busiest time in the publishing calendar with Frankfurt Book Fair just around the corner, agent Clare Alexander and Unbound publisher John Mitchinson discuss the economics of the publishing industry, from huge advances to the impact of Amazon. Oxford Professor Alain Goriely thinks that the repetitive rhythm in Ravel's Bolero might have been influenced by the composer's early dementia. He talks to Kirsty ahead of his lecture at King's Place in London, in conjunction with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. Presenter: Kirsty Lang Producer: Timothy Prosser

Discussing The Last Black Man in San Francisco Brandon finally gave into Joi and Ro's badgering to hunt down a theater and watch the The Last Black Man in San Francisco before it left theaters (at the time of recording, Kriss still hadn't accepted that Ro is always right in these matters possibly because The LBMiSF's primary marketing drive made it look at least tangentially like a "Black film") and the trio gathered to talk about the film's themes and different viewing experience.  Jimmie Fails and Jonathan Majors in THE LAST BLACK MAN IN SAN FRANCISCO, an A24 release. Credit: David Moir / A24 The Last Black Man in San Francisco, directed by Joe Talbot, is the story of Jimmie Fails's obsession with an old Victorian home his family used to live in located in the heart of San Francisco. Jimmie's lived his whole life fixated on the home he's quick to tell people his grandfather built. Accompanied in all things by his best friend Mongomery Allen aka Mont (portrayed by Jonathan Majors with best-be-nominated-for-best-supporting-actor-level-talent) Jimmie comes up with a scheme gain ownership of his childhood home again. Mont and his unique approach to processing the world around him is both the voice of reason and unfailingly supportive friend. The LBMiSF is a journey of self-discovery that touches on grief, trauma, family (blood and found), love, masculinity, and truth.  There's no way to walk away from The LBMiSF without a wholly new perspective on homelessness, addiction recovery, ownership, and the duty each person owes to the city they call home.  Targeting The Black Male Gaze in The Last Black Men In San Francisco Although The LBMiSF builds its narrative around the real-life experiences of Jimmie Fails, and his love affair with his former family home on Fillmore, it's messaging is both overt and nuanced with a deliberate focus on the connections and relationships between Black Men overlayed on an evocative backdrop chronicling the gentrification of San Francisco. For Ro and Joi, this film struck a chord on several levels but didn't feel "aimed" at them. For Brandon, it was a moving narrative that made him feel uniquely seen. All three agree, that 1) it makes no sense this film didn't have a larger marketing push and 2) though mileage may vary when it comes to what people think this film's about The Last Black Man in San Francisco's a must watch.   Like what you hear?
