On this episode of the Crazy Wisdom Podcast, I, Stewart Alsop, sit down with Federico Ast, founder of Kleros, to explore how decentralized justice systems can resolve both crypto-native and real-world disputes. We talk about the pilot with the Supreme Court in Mendoza, Argentina, where Kleros is helping small claims courts resolve cases faster and more transparently, and how this ties into a broader vision for digital governance using tools like proof of humanity and soulbound tokens. We also get into the philosophical and institutional implications of building a digital republic, and how blockchain can offer new models of legitimacy and truth-making. Show notes and more about Federico's work can be found via his Twitter: @federicoast (https://twitter.com/federicoast) and by joining the Kleros Telegram community.Check out this GPT we trained on the conversation!00:00 Introduction and Guest Welcome00:38 Claros Pilot Program in Mendoza02:00 Claros and the Legal System05:13 Personal Journey into Crypto07:16 Challenges and Innovations in Kleros18:02 Proof of Humanity and Soulbound Tokens26:54 Incentives and Proof of Humanity27:01 Interesting DAO Court Cases27:21 Prediction Markets and Disputes31:36 Customer Service and Dispute Resolution38:21 Governance and Online Communities40:02 Future of Civilization and Technology47:16 Bounties and Legal Systems49:06 Conclusion and Contact InformationKey InsightsDecentralized Justice Can Bridge the Gap Between Traditional Legal Systems and Web3: Federico Ast explains how Kleros functions as a decentralized dispute resolution system, offering a faster, more transparent, and more accessible alternative to conventional courts. In places like Mendoza, Argentina, Kleros has been piloted in collaboration with the Supreme Court to help resolve small claims that would otherwise take years, demonstrating how blockchain tools can support real-world judicial systems rather than replace them.Crypto Tools Are Most Powerful When Rooted in Real-World Problems: Ast emphasizes that his motivation for building in the blockchain space came not from hype but from firsthand experience with institutional inefficiencies in Argentina—such as corruption, inaccessible courts, and predatory financial systems. For him, crypto is a means to address these structural issues, not an end in itself. This grounded approach contrasts with many in the space who begin with the technology and try to retrofit a use case.Proof of Humanity and Soulbound Tokens Expand the Scope of Legitimate Governance: To address concerns over who gets to participate in decentralized juries, Kleros integrates identity verification through Proof of Humanity and uses non-transferable Soulbound Tokens to grant eligibility. These innovations allow communities—whether geographic, organizational, or digital—to define their own membership criteria, making decentralized courts feel more legitimate and relevant to participants.Decentralized Courts Can Handle Complex, Subjective Disputes: While early versions of Kleros were built for binary disputes (yes/no, Alice vs. Bob), real-world conflicts are often more nuanced. Over time, the platform evolved to support more flexible decision-making, including proportional fault, ranked outcomes, and variable payouts. This adaptability allows Kleros to handle a broader spectrum of disputes, including ambiguous or interpretive cases like those found in prediction markets.Incentive Systems Create New Forms of Justice Participation: Kleros applies game theory to create juror incentives that reward honest and aligned decisions. In systems like Proof of Humanity, it even gamifies fraud detection by offering financial bounties to those who uncover duplicate or fake identities. These economic incentives encourage voluntary participation in public-good functions such as identity verification and dispute resolution.Kleros Offers a Middle Ground Between Corporate Automation and Legal Bureaucracy: Many companies use rigid, automated systems to deny customer claims, leaving individuals with no real recourse except to complain on social media. Kleros offers an intermediate option: a transparent, peer-based adjudication process that can resolve disputes quickly. In pilot programs with fintech companies like Lemon, over 90% of users who lost their case still accepted the result and remained customers, showing how fairness in process can build trust even when outcomes disappoint.Digital Communities Are Becoming the New Foundations of Governance: Ast points out that many people now feel more connected to online communities than to their local or national institutions. Blockchain governance—enabled by tools like Kleros, Proof of Humanity, and decentralized IDs—allows these communities to build their own civil infrastructure. This marks a shift toward what he calls a “digital republic,” where shared values and participation, rather than geography, form the basis of collective decision-making and legitimacy.

Kleros is a decentralized dispute resolution protocol that uses blockchain technology to provide a transparent, efficient, and affordable way to resolve disputes. The protocol is built on the Ethereum blockchain and uses smart contracts and a decentralized network of jurors to arbitrate disputes. With Kleros, anyone with an internet connection can submit a dispute and have it resolved quickly and fairly by a group of randomly selected jurors. They are particularly well-suited for resolving disputes in the digital realm, such as disputes over online transactions, smart contract disputes, and disputes related to digital identity and reputation. However, it can also be used to resolve disputes in the physical world, such as disputes between landlords and tenants or between buyers and sellers. Overall, Kleros aims to provide a decentralized and trustworthy alternative to traditional legal systems, allowing people around the world to access justice in a fair and transparent way. They are also the winner of the Blockchains for Social Good Prize from the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation program. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/city-dao-podcast/message

"What if you could just outsource your disputes to Kleros? Whenever users have a dispute on your platform, Kleros will select a jury to analyze the dispute. They're going to see the evidence, see the agreement between parties, and they're going to make a decision about who is right, and then Kleros informs you of the decision on your platform. And then this is enforced by the smart contract and the money. Let's say Alice wins. So she's reimbursed the money that she would pay Bob for this. So this is one example in the freelancer (space). But imagine all of these platforms that just connect to Kleros through some pipes and send disputes - and Kleros sends back decisions. So this is the vision of what Kleros is going to build. This is why we call it "Decentralized Court" for all of the Web3 ecosystems." - Federico Ast   Fresh out of the studio, Federico Ast, founder of Kleros returned to the podcast to share the story of Kleros over the past few years and where it is heading as a decentralized arbitration service in the web3 and crypto economy. He dived deep into the concept of proof of humanity and how it helps to resolve identity verification and explored the implications of how Kleros has transformed the legal landscape from a landmark case in Mexico resolved by the protocol to advising the United Nations. Last but not least, Federico shared the new use cases relating to tokenized physical assets with Kleros and shared what great looks like for Kleros in the future. 0:00 -- Intro.1:30 -- Start of interview.3:32 -- Santi's "origin story". He was  born and grew up in Buenos Aires, Argentina. "The year 1983 was a symbolic year in Argentina because it's the year that democracy came back to the country." "My generation was tainted by two events: the hyperinflation of 1989 and the collapse of 2001 (peso devaluation and bank deposit freezes)."5:11 -- Argentina's strange political case. 7:24 -- Santi's professional background going from gaming, to founding "Partido de la Red" (the "Net Party") in 2012 - a political party in Argentina (inspired by Giorgio Jackson), and his pivot to crypto.14:04 -- His endeavors with Democracy Earth Foundation and UBI (Universal Basic Income through the Ethereum blockchain). The impact of Bitcoin and the new generation of builders in Argentina, with global leaders such as Decentraland. The strong adoption of crypto in countries like Argentina, Venezuela and Cuba: "There is a real need for crypto in countries that need an alternative."16:12  -- The connection of crypto with corporate governance. His interest on voting "we realized that whoever controls the registry of voters can decide the outcome of elections." The concept of Proof of Humanity ("the protocol got activated in March 2021 and it has had 50 proposals since then." How voting works in this DAO. "You see how contested the positions are to the extent of how people are willing to cheat in order to win." 23:19 -- Explaining DAOs (Decentralized Autonomous Organizations). Different DAO applications. Token voting. On The DAO hack (2016).25:59 -- On the evolution of DAOs. On Vitalik Buterin (co-founder of Ethereum): "I think he's today's most inspiring leader in technology, by far. In the same rank as Elon Musk, and many other great ones." "A lot of the [crypto] community looks up to him as a role model who really understands what it means to lead through the process of creation of a decentralized network." "It's a very counter-intuitive exercise in leadership because you actually need to reject being in control, in order to gain legitimacy." "The role that founders play in these networks I think is a determinant factor in the outcome of how projects evolve over time." "Nothing ever begins decentralized, it needs to be progressively decentralized throughout time." "Building institutionality in cyberspace I think has tremendous power for coordination of humans and capital in a global, more legitimate way."28:46 -- On the role of founders, contrast between 'traditional' founder-controlled startups and new decentralized crypto projects. On Vitalik's founder's take in a reply to Balaji Sirinivasan's book the Network State. Santi has personally dealt with some of these founder debates, he's currently a Mission Board Member at Proof of Humanity, elected by the community.32:32 -- On the contrast of "corporate governance" and "crypto or DAO governance". "One of the most interesting projects in the space right now, I think is a project called Kleros, a decentralized arbitration service for disputes of the new economy." "They work as oracles that bring into the blockchain human judgment, based on a drafted policy or guideline." This is very important for enforcement, and to audit the decision process. On-chain governance vs Off-chain governance. The cases of Aragon and Moloch DAO (founded by Ameen Soleimani). "In Proof of Humanity, we don't want voting to be on-chain, because it makes it expensive to vote. The purpose of voting is to be an alternative to economic incentives. So voting needs to happen off-chain for voting to remain free [and] a right." Snapshot as the off-chain voting mechanism. Kleros' Governor solution.42:18 -- On Proof of Humanity (~16,630 profiles), its DAO, and UBI. "Argentina and Brazil are two of the leading adopters of UBI right now." Proof of Integrity DAO (promoting technological inclusion).47:44 -- On the current "crypto crash", the cases of Terra/Luna, Celsius. "You can see the ripples of Terra going down throughout the industry, it led to the Celsius and 3AC collapse... you can see the dominoes falling in a very clear way."55:12 -- On the advantage of understanding how to code. [reference to Vitalik's visit to Buenos Aires in his podcast "Por Qué No Te Habré Hecho Caso" (a leading crypto podcast in Spanish] 57:10 - Some of the books that have greatly influenced his life: The Star Maker by Olaf Stapledon (1937) *prologue written by Jorge Luis Borges.Gödel, Escher, Bach, by Douglas Hofstadter  (1979) "the bible of Artificial Intelligence"The Sovereign Individual, by William Rees-Mogg and James Dale Davidson. Today on the Fortune Teller podcast, we are talking with Mason Burkhalter, Head of Operations at API3. API3 allows for the creation of trustless applications that interact with Web APIs. Instead of using legacy third-party oracle networks, API3 is moving towards first-party oracle options to provide more security, efficiency, regulatory compliance, and simplicity. The API3 data feeds are governed by an open DAO of stakeholders, industry experts and project partners. This lets dAPIs to be operated with maximal transparency, minimal trust in centralized operators, and without centralized attack surfaces. API token holders take a direct part in governing the project by staking API3 tokens into the API3 insurance staking contract, granting voting power in the API3 DAO. Third party oracles are both insecure and expensive. API3 data feeds are not exposed to data tampering and denial of service attacks by middlemen, as API3 does not have third-party node operators. Thus, API3 data feeds reach higher cost-efficiency, with fewer attack surfaces. Source-level decentralization of dAPIs is enabled by Airnode, a fully serverless oracle node to be deployed by any API provider for free, and with little day-to-day management. API3 provides dAPI users with an on-chain insurance, powered by the API3 token and Kleros' decentralized courts. API3's insurance gives dAPI users a quantifiable safety net in the event of a malfunction, and holds the API3 DAO directly responsible for the dAPIs' security, while it incentivizes a security-first governance approach for dAPIs, along with the API3 project as a whole. Furthermore, dAPIs can be bridged to any blockchain, being a multi-layer, cross-platform data solution. This allows for smart contracts on various platforms with more accurate access to premium real-world data. This multi-layer, cross-platform approach lets any smart contract platform leverage API3's ecosystem of dAPIs and data-integration tools by creating a bridge between API3 and the network. API3 allows for API providers to easily run their own oracle nodes. With this, API providers can provide their data on-chain, without an intermediary, to any decentralized app (dApp) interested in their services. Using a single first-party oracle creates centralization at the API level, and requires the API provider to be trusted. An oracle network makes the request to multiple independent oracles, reducing their responses to a single answer via predetermined consensus rules implemented as a smart contract. With these, individual malicious oracles cannot manipulate the outcome, creating a level of decentralization and trustlessness. In addition, the oracle network must be governed decentrally as well. Otherwise, a central entity can switch the oracles or APIs used, or replace the aggregator to manipulate the oracle network output. To learn more about API3, visit: https://api3.org/ https://www.linkedin.com/company/api3/ https://www.youtube.com/c/API3DAO/featured https://twitter.com/API3DAO -- The Fortune Teller podcast is a discussion between industry leaders in blockchain and financial technologies. In this episode of Adventures in Blockchain our panel is joined by a special guest. Clément Lesaege is a blockchain developer working at Kleros. Kleros resolves disputes using a decentralized arbitration system and smart contracts.  Clément shares some examples of how their smart contracts work with outside data.    Gregory McCubbin, ever the teacher, breaks down what Clément means when he is talking out how Kleros is using smart contracts. Smart contracts are an agreement when something happens it there is a specific outcome, all of which happens in a trustless and decentralized way. ICO or Initial Coin Offering is the example Gregory shares as a very simple use case for smart contracts handled within the chain.    Kleros is solving a problem when a source outside of the blockchain is used such as an escrow service. Clément explains how a disputation is handled. Jurors are chosen at random, they then vote on the dispute and the smart contract carries out the verdict. The panel discusses how the blockchain handles all this in a decentralized way. Charles Max Wood expresses how wonderful this would have been back in his freelancing days.    While Charles can see how this would all be very useful he needs help understanding how all this happens in a blockchain and asks Clément why they chose to build this in a blockchain. Clément explains that in the blockchain everything is transparent which helps avoid bribery by the parties involved. Also, the smart contracts carry out the sentence automatically, the cryptocurrency is moved around a soon as a verdict has been reached by the jurors. This is a lot less complicated than in the real world, where receiving money after a verdict has been reached in a real court can take a while and get messy.    Kleros works as a plugin and can be adapted to the needs of the users. The panel discusses the various use cases including escrow and freelancer fees. Clément shares some of the projects currently using Kleros. Kleros is used in token registries to keep people from making fake tokens and scamming others out of their cryptocurrency.    The panel expounds on the possibilities blockchain provides for escrow services. Escrow can be locked away for months at a time not earning any interest, Gregory considers the benefits if instead of doing that,  people put that money into a stable cryptocurrency that is gaining in APR. The panel considers how this would improve the escrow model and incentivize the adoption of blockchain in escrow services.    Clément finishes this week’s episode by introducing the two new exciting apps they are currently working on at Kleros. Dispute resolution is the process by which contracting parties settle disagreements. Whether in the form of litigation, arbitration, or other means of mediation, every contract defines a dispute resolution mechanism and jurisdiction. It is the metaphorical Lady Justice, measuring the strength of each party’s arguments, and reaching a decision based on evidence. Smart contracts are unique in this sense. Unlike traditional contracts, they are rigid and deterministic. Written in computer code, nuances in human language and vagueness of terms do not exist in this realm. There are no judges, no jury, just calculated execution. The DOA hack and other similar events have prompted observers of the space to express the need for smart contract dispute resolution. Some have suggested “exit switches” that would allow for human intervention when edge cases appear. But could the arbitration process be integrated into the smart contract and on the blockchain? We’re joined by, Federico Ast and Clement Lessage, respectively CEO and CTO of Kleros. This dispute resolution layer provides contracting parties with a fast and secure process for arbitration. The system is broken up into courts and sub-courts, each specializing in specific matters like e-commerce, insurance, and transport. In the event of a dispute, parties submit their case to Kleros, where a crowd of expert jurors analyses the evidence. When all votes are cast, the decision is enforced by the smart contract, which may unlock funds, or provide parties with additional time to fulfill the terms of the agreement. Clever incentive mechanisms reward jurors who vote with the crowd, making Kleros resistant to bribe attacks and collusion between jurors. Topics covered in this episode: Federico and Clement’s respective backgrounds, including a crowd arbitration project called Jury. The vision behind Kleros and the problem it addresses The case for crowd-sourced jurors as a means to find the best judgment The game theory and incentive mechanisms embedded in Kleros Kleros’ hierarchical system of courts and sub-courts How jury selection works and who administers courts The system’s built-in governance mechanism and its purpose The Kleros token, Pinkaion coin, and it’s utility in the system “Doge on Trial,” a clever experiment to find authentic doges The current status of the project and roadmap Episode links: Kleros Website Kleros White Papper Doges on Trial Why Decentralization Matters by Chris Dixon This episode is hosted by Meher Roy and Sébastien Couture.
