"Did you know that being homeless is really expensive?" That's the sentence one Family Promise Winchester client said to Chris Brigante recently — and it's the question that anchors this follow-up episode of The Valley Today. Host Janet Michael welcomes Chris Brigante, Executive Director of Family Promise Winchester, back to the show for the deep-dive conversation she promised at the end of their last recording: what actually happens when a family loses their home and ends up living in a motel. Chris and Janet walk through one hypothetical family — mom with two part-time jobs, dad in a factory job, a toddler in daycare, and an elementary-schooler — and follow them through every consequence of an eviction: the storage costs, the $1,800–$2,000 monthly motel bill (nearly doubling to $4,000 for a family with three kids under the four-person occupancy limit), the food economy that forces you to eat out for every meal because you have no fridge, no stove, no freezer, and no cabinet space. The 21-day cycle-out that many people don't know exists (motels legally shuffle guests to prevent them from becoming tenants). The homework problem when your third-grader has nowhere quiet to work and can't invite friends over. The address problem when you're applying for a job or a driver's license. The Scarlet Letter of an eviction record that follows you into your next lease application, complete with double security deposits. And the compounding, invisible cost of shame — which Chris identifies as one of the biggest barriers to a family getting themselves out. The conversation closes with the math that makes Family Promise's work so cost-effective (about $500 per child in direct assistance for permanent, stable housing) and a genuine ask: to donors, to would-be landlords open to working with a vetted family, and to anyone who's ever been quietly judgmental about people living in motels — reconsider what you thought you knew. THE INVISIBLE COSTS OF LIVING IN A MOTEL A quick catalog, drawn from this episode, of the expenses and impacts that pile up on a family staying in a residence motel: DIRECT MONETARY COSTS • $1,800–$2,000/month for a family of four in one room (often more than the rent that got them here) • Up to $4,000/month if the family exceeds the 4-person occupancy limit and needs two rooms • Storage unit fees for all the belongings that don't fit • Restaurant meals for every meal, every day (no fridge, no stove, no freezer) • Laundromat costs, plus transportation to get there • Ride-shares or delivery fees for basic groceries and appointments • Some motels: even toilet paper is a paid add-on • Childcare during work hours (with no car and no support network to fall back on) INDIRECT AND INVISIBLE COSTS • Time — 2 to 3 hours a day just getting around town on foot or by bus • The 21-day cycle-out — packing everything up every three weeks to move to a new room or motel • No mailing address for job applications, drivers' licenses, or utility accounts • No Wi-Fi in some motels — cutting off job applications, online classes, and even phone service if internet-dependent • Loss of privacy — no separate space for a sick child, no quiet homework spot, no adult conversation • Safety exposure — smoke, noise, addiction, domestic violence audible through walls, a single front window as your only barrier MENTAL HEALTH IMPACTS • On children — instability itself (not the homelessness) is what harms development; the child knows it's not safe or permanent • On school-age children — hard to focus in class, can't do homework, embarrassed to be honest with peers • On parents — the shame of the situation itself becomes a barrier to problem-solving • On the family unit — crisis mode makes rational, step-by-step planning nearly impossible HOW TO HELP FAMILY PROMISE WINCHESTER • Donate directly at familypromisewinchester.org — the donation link is on the front page • Recurring monthly giving is the most valuable — Family Promise can predict and commit • Any dollar helps: about $500 in direct assistance per child gets a family stably housed • Consider in-kind donations for move-in kits (shower curtains, hooks, toasters, basic household items) • Landlords: reach out to Chris directly. Family Promise families are vetted, financially counseled, and Family Promise stays involved for 90+ days after move-in. • Donate clothing to Winchester CCAP — Family Promise picks up outfits there weekly for their families • Contact Chris directly for a coffee and conversation FAMILY PROMISE WINCHESTER'S SERVICE AREA • Winchester City • Frederick County • Clarke County • Warren County (Shenandoah County is served by a separate Family Promise chapter — the whole region is covered.) Host Randy Radtke talks with Kyle Pethke, Manager of Laundry Design at Alliance Laundry Systems, about the full process of designing laundromats—from site selection and demographics to utility planning, equipment mix, and construction-ready drawings. They discuss common challenges (tight footprints, odd angles, service access, sight lines), industry trends (larger-capacity machines, card/pay systems, wash‑dry‑fold), frequent design mistakes like overcrowding, and how to engage Alliance's design team for projects.

Send us Fan MailThe conversation focused on the seismic shifts taking place in the commercial laundromat industry, with a particular deep dive into Alliance Laundry Holdings, the powerhouse behind brands like Speed Queen, Unimac, Hipsch, Primus, and Ipso. A key theme that emerged was the growing consolidation of power across all layers of the industry—manufacturing, distribution, financing, software, and even retail ownership—driven by moves such as private equity buyouts, aggressive distributor acquisitions, expanding captive lending, and new franchise and media ventures. The discussion explored how decisions by industry giants impact everyday laundromat owners, raising questions about pricing power, deal negotiation, and the future of independent ownership. Several points were raised, including rising equipment costs, tightening distribution channels, the proliferation of in-house financing, and the strategic use of data and media to shape the market. Listeners are promised an actionable five-point checklist to protect and strengthen their businesses in the face of these changes, alongside a candid look at what the next moves by industry leaders might mean for laundromat owners nationwide. In this episode, Jordan talks about:00:00 Private equity and company debt04:43 BDT dividend and IPO funding09:38 Discussing pricing strategy10:40 Rising equipment costs for new stores16:26 Industry shakeup: Equipment distribution changes19:55 Comparing distributor pricing strategies23:32 Connected machines and digital growth26:35 Franchise investment requirements27:51 Speed Queen's growth potential32:26 Trends in Laundromat Acquisitions35:55 Franchise expansion and data products38:02 Importance of owning your data41:33 Pro community engagement and sharingFree Strategy Zoom Call with Jordan:https://calendly.com/laundromatresource/free-strategy-call?back=1

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: our episode on Soderbergh's 2019 Panama Papers infotainment film THE LAUNDROMAT. Joining us to parse this deeply odd "comedic" "look" into the mysterious world of offshore finance is co-host of the Michael & Us podcast and author of The Dead Center: Reflections on Liberalism and Democracy After the End of History, Luke Savage! Together we get to the bottom of Soderbergh and Scott Z. Burns' decision to give the BIG SHORT treatment to Jake Bernstein's entirely unfunny nonfiction book Secrecy World, and find in the film a very familiar liberal disinterest in the transformative potential of moments like the Panama Papers leak. Great conversation, check it out (whether or not you've seen the pretty lousy movie)! Note: We had a small technical problem in the last 20 minutes or so, and our guest's audio quality is notably lower but still perfectly listenable for the end of the episode. We blame transnational gangs of malefactors. In August of 2023, the Osage County Sheriff's Office in Oklahoma released a journal entry written in Dennis Rader's own handwriting. The entry described a fantasy of taking a young woman from a laundromat. Rader had a title for it. He had written it on the page. "Bad Wash Day."The reason that journal entry was released matters. On June 23, 1976, a sixteen-year-old Pawhuska, Oklahoma, cheerleader named Cynthia Dawn Kinney finished her shift at her aunt and uncle's laundromat. She was reportedly last seen getting into a car with two women she did not appear to know. She has never been seen alive since. Her body has never been found. Almost half a century later, her family is still waiting. In the fourth chapter of True Crime Today's five-part BTK investigation, host Tony Brueski walks through the thirteen years between Rader's last confirmed Kansas killing in 1991 and his March 2004 resurfacing, and the question that has been driving cold-case investigators in multiple states since 2023. Did Dennis Rader actually stop, or did the system miss him?The episode covers Sheriff Eddie Virden's 2023 task force announcement. The August 2023 excavation of a property near Rader's former Park City home. Dr. Katherine Ramsland's "powering down" framework from a decade of correspondence. The March 2024 ruling out of the Shawna Beth Garber case as Rader's. The continuing disagreement between the Osage County Sheriff's Office, which still names Rader a prime suspect in the Kinney case, and the Osage County District Attorney, who has publicly said the evidence does not support charges.Dennis Rader is eighty-one. The families are aging. The case is not closed.END LINKSJoin Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/ Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? The Epstein Laundromat: How Dirty Cash Stayed Clean

Beyond The Horizon

In the clearest possible terms, the financial network surrounding Jeffrey Epstein was not an accident, an anomaly, or the work of a lone predator—it was a deliberately constructed ecosystem enabled by billionaires, institutions, and the largest bank in the United States. Figures like Les Wexner and Leon Black didn't just brush up against Epstein; they empowered him, legitimized him, and embedded him inside their financial worlds. Wexner gave Epstein unprecedented legal control over his empire through power-of-attorney arrangements and trust structures that effectively turned Epstein into the architect of Wexner's personal and philanthropic machinery. Black, for his part, funneled hundreds of millions of dollars to Epstein under the guise of “consulting,” using offshore pathways and fee structures so inexplicable that financial experts still can't reconcile the numbers. These weren't casual business relationships—they were pipelines, mechanisms, and conduits that allowed Epstein to scale his influence far beyond what any conventional résumé could justify. But none of Epstein's financial maneuvering would have been possible without JPMorgan Chase, whose private-banking division knowingly ignored internal warnings, suspicious activity reports, and staff concerns because Epstein delivered access to elite clients and deep-pocketed networks. The bank's compliance failures weren't accidental—they represented a strategic blindness, a willingness to override red flags in pursuit of profit and prestige. Taken together, Wexner's access, Black's money, and JPMorgan's infrastructure formed the backbone of Epstein's financial power. And that is precisely why Congress avoids digging into this side of the scandal: following the money wouldn't just expose Epstein—it would expose the machinery that enabled him, and the institutions that still shape American economic and political life today.to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.com
