Are laundromats "the ultimate side hustle," like my guest Jordan Berry described? These simple, local, cash-flowing businesses have been around forever, but surprisingly this is the first time discussing them in detail on the show. Jordan is a former pastor turned laundromat mogul. Along the way, he's become an advocate for the industry through his website and podcast at LaundromatResource.com. Jordan got the idea to buy a laundromat after his wife told him about a family friend quitting his day job in tech after buying one. It wasn't just the income potential that intrigued Jordan. He wanted a business that would generate passive income -- and yield better returns than real estate. Jordan has been able to achieve both of those things through buying laundromats. Tune in to hear: why a laundromat makes a great side hustle and investment vehicle some of the expensive mistakes to avoid where to look for financing and some creative marketing and monetization ideas Full Show Notes: 10 Reasons to Buy a Laundromat Business as Your Next Side Hustle New to the Show? 1976 - Lewiston, Maine. In the early hours of a November morning in 1976, Dorothy “Dotty” Milliken left her home to do some late-night laundry in Lewiston, Maine. She never made it back. A local paperboy found her body just before dawn, outside Beal's Laundromat. She had been beaten to death in what police called a frenzied attack. Tonia was just seven when her mother was killed—a traumatic loss that reshaped the course of her family's future. In the years since, she's worked to understand what happened. Now, a new book revisits the case, pulling together decades of theories, suspects, new interviews, and questions to form a possible picture of that night. But police are still missing a critical piece of the puzzle: the person that knows who killed Dorothy Milliken. If you have any information on the murder of Dorothy Milliken, please contact the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit South at (207)624-7076 x9. Their study, "Unmet Health Care and Health-Related Social Needs of Laundromat Users," published in this month's issue, identifies laundromats as a promising community-based setting for Medicaid outreach, with Medicaid enrollees comprising the majority of users and facing disproportionately high levels of unmet needs. During the conversation, Leininger and Chang highlight how engaging with enrollees at laundromats can help foster trust, address unmet social needs, and strengthen Medicaid engagement.

Welcome to the PlanetLaundry Podcast – brought to you by PlanetLaundry, the official publication of CLA. In this episode, PlanetLaundry Editor Matt DeWolf chats with store owner Hannah Chapman, who operates WashBar based in Oklahoma. Chapman and her husband got into the industry just 4 years ago in what was a headfirst dive into the deep end of the vended laundry swimming pool. They quickly grew from one location to four and are looking at opportunities. But the biggest opportunity for Hannah is around the way they can impact the people in their community and in their business. She believes strongly in the power of people, and the value that brings to your organization. Hannah and her husband are eager to help educate and give back to the industry, because they were fortunate enough to benefit from others' generosity when it comes to learning. The pair worked for free at a laundromat for several months prior to owning their own location and said that experience was invaluable. We hope you enjoy this conversation. Air quality is getting worse for some Central Pennsylvania communities. WITF’s Rachel McDevitt has more on the latest State of the Air report. Pennsylvania state leaders are enacting a plan to reduce rates of maternal morbidity and mortality across the Commonwealth. It includes making it easier for women and children to access health care, nutrition and other social services. Meantime, in Philadelphia, healthcare outreach workers are trying to offer that help in an unusual place: laundromats. This past weekend marked the 250th anniversary of the first shots fired in the American Revolution--and a special exhibit opened at the Museum of the American Revolution in Philadelphia. The two Democrats running for Lancaster mayor will debate this Saturday. And the U.S. Justice Department has withdrawn a lawsuit accusing Hazleton and its leaders of violating federal law by thwarting the election of Hispanic City Council candidates.
