fWotD Episode 2774: You Belong with Me Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Sunday, 8 December 2024 is You Belong with Me."You Belong with Me" is a song by the American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift and the third single from her second studio album Fearless (2008). Big Machine Records released the song to radio on April 20, 2009. Swift was inspired to write "You Belong with Me" after overhearing a telephone call between a touring band member and his girlfriend; she and Liz Rose wrote the lyrics, which discuss an unrequited love. Swift and Nathan Chapman produced the track, which has a banjo-led country pop production and incorporates fiddle, mandolin, and rock-influenced bass and electric guitars. Although the single was promoted on country radio, some critics categorized it into 1980s pop subgenres such as pop rock and power pop.Early reviews of the song generally praised its radio-friendly production and the emotional engagement of the lyrics, although a few deemed the songwriting formulaic. Some feminist critics took issue with the lyrics as slut-shaming but retrospective opinions have considered "You Belong with Me" one of Swift's signature songs. At the 2010 Grammy Awards, the song was nominated in three categories, including Song of the Year and Record of the Year. The single reached the top 10 on several charts and received certifications in Australia, Canada, Japan, and New Zealand. In the United States, it peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100, and was the first country song to reach number one on both the Hot Country Songs chart and the all-genre Radio Songs chart. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) certified the single seven-times platinum. Roman White directed the song's music video, which stars Swift as both the antagonist—an unsympathetic, popular brunette cheerleader—and the protagonist—a sympathetic, blonde girl next door who yearns for the antagonist's boyfriend. The video premiered on CMT on May 4, 2009, and won Best Female Video at the MTV Video Music Awards; Swift's acceptance speech was interrupted by Kanye West, which caused a controversy widely covered by the press. Following a 2019 dispute about the ownership of Swift's back catalog, she re-recorded the song as "You Belong with Me (Taylor's Version)" for her album Fearless (Taylor's Version) (2021). As of 2024, "You Belong with Me" has been included in the set lists of five of Swift's six headlining tours. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:30 UTC on Sunday, 8 December 2024.For the full current version of the article, see You Belong with Me on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm standard Russell.

American music star Beyoncé released her new album Cowboy Carter last week. The singer said the country music record was born of an earlier experience in which she “did not feel welcomed” by the country music industry. 美国音乐明星碧昂斯上周发行了她的新专辑《Cowboy Carter》。 这位歌手表示,乡村音乐唱片的诞生源于她早期的经历,当时她“没有感受到乡村音乐界的欢迎”。Country music stars Linda Martell and Willie Nelson are among the album's guest artists. Beyoncé has made history yet again. She just became the first Black woman to top the Hot Country Songs chart with her hit track "TEXAS HOLD 'EM." And she's been welcomed into the country community by some of the genre's top artists, including Maren Morris and Lainey Wilson. Now, "TEXAS HOLD 'EM," which was released on February 11 -- you know that ad in the Super Bowl gave us a clue. It serviced country radio just two days later and pushed back Zach Bryan and Kacey Musgraves' duet, which had been on the top of that chart for 20 weeks. So what can you say? Go Bey! Of course, the Beehive can't wait for her to release an entire country album titled "Act II." That's coming up on March 29. As you might guess, though, not everybody was happy about Beyoncé's success. Some of her fans had to convince one of the country stations to play her song. And, of course, they did. Well, the country stations finally complied after they initially refused, saying, we only play country music. Beyoncé doesn't do country music. Well, honey, welcome to the new world. Tennessee House honors Paramore but not Allison Russell And when it comes to Tennessee's recent Grammy-winning musical heroes, the state's House Republicans are making it clear they're good with Paramore, which is a white musical group, but not so much with Allison Russell, who's Black, for reasons they cannot exactly explain. Tennessee Representative Justin Jones, a Democrat from Nashville, brought resolutions before the body to honor the Grammy achievements of Paramore, who won for Best Rock Album and Best Alternative Music Performance, and also Russell, who picked up her first Grammy for Best American Roots Performance for the song "Eve Was Black." Although both singers have made their displeasure with the GOP-controlled legislature known in the past, only one of the two proclamations was blocked. Yep, the resolution honoring Paramore sailed through, but the one celebrating Russell was effectively killed. And that's where we're going to pick up the rest of this story. Stay tuned because something must be done about this one. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Gregers Jørgensen er Mandøs yngste indbygger og medvirker i "Før stormen", og han forklarer sammen med filmens instruktør Sofie Husum Johannesen, hvorfor økulturen er vigtig. fWotD Episode 2408: White Horse (Taylor Swift song) Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of the featured Wikipedia article every day.The featured article for Friday, 8 December 2023 is White Horse (Taylor Swift song)."White Horse" is a song by the American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift and the second single from her second studio album, Fearless (2008). Big Machine Records released the track to US country radio on December 8, 2008. Swift wrote "White Horse" with Liz Rose and produced it with Nathan Chapman. An understated country pop ballad, the song is driven by a finger-picked guitar and includes piano and cello accents. The lyrics incorporate fairy-tale imagery of princesses and white horses: a narrator is heartbroken on realizing that her boyfriend is not an ideal figure like she thought, and in the end she leaves her town with hopes of finding somebody more worthy.Music critics lauded "White Horse" for what they deemed a somber production and a portrayal of universal feelings arising from heartbreak, but some found the lyrics uncreative. At the 2010 Grammy Awards, the track won Best Country Song and Best Female Country Vocal Performance. In the United States, the single peaked at number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number two on the Hot Country Songs chart, and the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) certified it double platinum. The song also charted in Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom; it received certifications in the first two countries.Trey Fanjoy directed the song's music video, which depicts Swift reliving memories with her ex-boyfriend and her discovery of his infidelity after having ended their relationship through a phone call. The video premiered on February 7, 2009, on CMT, and it became the first video to debut at number one on the network's countdown. Swift performed "White Horse" live at the 2008 American Music Awards, on her Fearless Tour (2009–2010), and on certain dates of her later tours. Following the 2019 dispute regarding the ownership of Swift's back catalog, she re-recorded the song as "White Horse (Taylor's Version)" for her 2021 re-recorded album Fearless (Taylor's Version). This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:01 UTC on Friday, 8 December 2023.For the full current version of the article, see White Horse (Taylor Swift song) on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Stephen Neural.
When it crash-landed on the charts in 2019, Lil Nas X's “Old Town Road” felt new and old at the same time: a savvy, TikTok-fueled viral hit that summarized a century of cross-cultural collisions between R&B, rap and country. It was also unexpectedly huge—a record 19 weeks at No. 1 on the Hot 100—and controversial, as Billboard magazine pulled the song from its Hot Country Songs chart, prompting a reckoning on race and the very definition of country music. “Old Town Road” wasn't just a reckoning—it was a culmination. As a hard-to-categorize hit, it called back to cross-genre experiments by everyone from Ray Charles and the Rappin' Duke to Bubba Sparxxx and even Jason Aldean. As a viral smash, its antecedents date back to “The Twist,” right through “Crank That (Soulja Boy)” and “Harlem Shake.” In honor of his new book Old Town Road (now in bookstores!) join Chris Molanphy as he walks through the many predecessors to “Old Town Road” and explains why can't nobody tell Lil Nas X nothin'. The 2017 album came six years after his full-length debut, Reason to Rhyme, announcing a promising talent in a bro-country vein, but boom. was fresh and fused modern R&B, contemporary country, hip-hop, and rock, announcing a distinctive talent. Hayes consolidated this breakthrough with the clever "Fancy Like," which reached number one on Billboard's Country charts in 2021, a hit that was the cornerstone of his third record, Country Stuff the Album.Hayes is a native of Mobile, Alabama. Born on December 27, 1979, he grew up in Mobile, dividing his time between music and sports as a child and teenager. He wound up earning a music degree from Alabama's Birmingham-Southern College, then attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He and his wife moved to Nashville in 2005 with dreams of him becoming a professional musician. He signed a song publishing deal, and then, on the strength of a demo he recorded for Keith Urban, Hayes inked a deal with Mercury before quickly moving to Capitol Records. He released his debut single, "Pants," in 2010, which wound up reaching 60 on the Hot Country Songs chart. The full-length Reason to Rhyme followed in 2011, but it didn't chart. Over the next few years, Hayes worked as a songwriter, landing placements with Colt Ford and Rodney Atkins in 2014. Capitol dropped him, so he worked at Costco and continued to write, releasing the single "Pimpin' Joy" to little attention in 2014. Shane McAnally signed him to SMACK/RareSpark in 2016, leading him to release two EPs -- 8Tracks, Vol. 1: Good Shit and 8Tracks, Vol. 2: Break the Internet -- that year. Hayes landed a contract with Monument in 2017, which released "You Broke Up with Me" that year. www.GaryScottThomas.com
The supergroup U.K. was founded by former King Crimson percussionist Bill Bruford (also a former founder of Yes) and bassist and vocalist John Wetton (also a former member of Uriah Heep, and Roxy Music). After failing to reform King Crimson, each of the two brought in a musician they thought would work well in the group. Wetton brought in Eddie Jobson, violinist and keyboardist from Frank Zappa's band. Bruford brought in Allan Holdsworth on guitars (who had worked on Bruford's prior solo project. Their self titled debut album was released in May, 1978. Although a couple of songs were edited for single release, the album U.K. is best known as a prog rock masterpiece, and is cited as inspirational to many musicians who followed in the prog rock genre. After an extensive tour supporting the album, Wetton and Jobson had a falling out with Holdsworth and fired him. Bill Bruford left at that time and was replaced by Terry Bozzio, another alumnus of Frank Zappa's band and a future founding member of Missing Persons. John Wetton would go on in the days after U.K. to be the front man for Asia.Rob brings us the prog rock monster-piece. In the Dead of NightThe track that leads off the album was one of two songs to be edited for release as a single. On the album it is the first of three songs which form a continuous suite on the first album side. The 7/4 time and the synthesizer - the Yamaha CS-80 had just been released - are prog rock hallmarks. The electric violin is an unusual addition.By the Light of DayThis track is the second movement of the "In the Dead of Night" suite. Rather than have a clear change in tracks, there is a slow transition via a "spacey" interlude into the new song of the suite. "Black clouds moving gray skies to thunder. Kinetic sunrise fever and flood. Fire and water element anger horizon melting to blood."Presto Vivace and RepriseThis is the third movement of the "In the Dead of Night suite. This is a much faster piece (as the term Vivace would suggest) before transitioning back into a reprise of "In the Dead of Night."Time to KillThe abrupt start to this song is due to the way the tracks drift into each other. The concept is that of boredom, of being stuck in a place. "Time to kill, going nowhere, killing time, staying where there's time to kill, going nowhere..." ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:That'll Be the Day by Buddy Holly (from the motion picture "The Buddy Holly Story") Gary Busey was nominated for the Oscar for his portrayal of early rocker Buddy Holly in this film. Busey would sing and play for the part. STAFF PICKS:Goodbye Girl by David Gates Bruce leads off the staff picks with a soft rock solo from former Bread front man David Gates. The song is from the Neil Simon movie "The Goodbye Girl," which would lead to Richard Dreyfuss becoming the youngest man to win an Oscar for Best Actor at the time. Lay Down Sally by Eric Clapton Brian presents a pop hit from Clapton's album Slowhand. It went to number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was written by Clapton, George Terry (guitar), and Marcy Levy (who sings the female parts on the song). It was written in the country blues style of J.J. Cale, and hit number 26 on the Hot Country Songs chart, Clapton's best showing on that chart as a crossover.Ain't It Fun by Dead BoysWayne features a song from Cleveland's own Dead Boys. This song appears on their second studio album, "We Have Come for Your Children." They were known as one of the rowdiest bands on the punk scene. It hit number 8 on the Mainstream Rock charts, and is an ode to the punk rock lifestyle. With a Little Luck by WingsRob brings us Paul McCartney with a song recorded largely in the Virgin Islands on a yacht equipped with a 24-track mobile recording studio installed on it. This single from the album "London Town" hit number 1 on the pop charts. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Alaska by U.K. This instrumental lets us do some double dipping with the track that leads off side 2 of the U.K. album.

Texas rapper chats about career and new music In the mid 2000's, Cowboy Troy defined a new era in country music with country rap -- or hick hop, as he has coined it. The Texas born rapper released Loco Motive in 2005 with "I Play Chicken With The Train" landing in the Top 50 on Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart. It paved the way for a genre that some may argue is unrecognizable today with its hip hop and R&B loops. Cowboy Troy was a member of the MuzikMafia (Musically Artistic Friends In Alliance) which was founded by Big & Rich's John Rich and Big Kenny Alphin in 2001. The collective contained a variety of outliers in the Nashville community who mixed styles and genres. MuzikMafia grew a vast fanbase as they often hosted late night jam sessions around Nashville that included a variety of guest performers like Jon Bon Jovi, Kid Rock, Jewel, and others, to name a few. We spoke with Cowboy Troy after the 2022 CMA Fest to chat about his career, new music and what's ahead. Full audio is streaming above. DID I SHAVE MY LEGS FOR THIS (1996)Album Information: Did I Shave My Legs for This is the debut studio album of American country artist Deana Carter, released via Patriot Records in the UK in 1995. In 1996, Capitol Records had Carter record new material for the North American release of the album, which included three songs from the original release.[8] This version features her breakthrough debut single "Strawberry Wine", a number-one hit on the Billboard [[Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart at the end of that year. "We Danced Anyway", "Count Me In", and the title track were also released as a singles. Of these, "We Danced Anyway" and the promotional single "How Do I Get There" also reached number one. (Wikipedia)Album InfoEverything's Gonna Be Alright (1998)Everything's Gonna Be Alright is the second studio album by American country music artist Deana Carter. Released in 1998 as her second and final studio album for Capitol Records Nashville, it features the single "Absence of the Heart", a number 16 hit on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks (now Hot Country Songs) charts in late 1998. "You Still Shake Me" and "Angels Working Overtime" were released as the second and third singles, and peaked at numbers 36 and 35, respectively. "Ruby Brown" failed to chart in the U.S., but managed to reach number 74 on the country charts in Canada.Album InfoFather Christmas (2001)This holiday album manages to be great despite itself -- one of Deana Carter's strengths is her songwriting; this is a collection largely of standards. Even though it adds a kind of fireside charm, the guitar accompaniment, provided by her father, Fred Carter, Jr., seems ham-handed and often off-tempo. The only thing about the album that isn't flawed is her voice. Subtle and sweet, she charms throughout and sets a gentle, soothing tone that is perfect for a wintry evening. Carter has also managed to present a holiday album that manages to exude a down-home country style without resorting to stereotypical twanginess and fiddles. Father Christmas may not go too far to try to be original or different, but it is pretty memorable just the way it is.Album InfoI'm Just A Girl (2003)I'm Just a Girl is the fourth studio album released by American country singer/songwriter Deana Carter. The album peaked at #6 on the U.S. Top Country Albums chart and #58 on the Billboard 200, and produced two singles. "There's No Limit" was released in late 2002 as the lead single. The song was Carter's first Top 20 hit since "Absence of the Heart" in 1998, when it peaked at #14 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks #interview #countrymusic #deanacarter chart in early 2003. The title track was released as the album's second single, which was a minor Top 40 hit. This was Carter's only release on Arista Nashville; she then switched to Vanguard for her next albums. The cover resembles a magazine cover.Album InfoThe Story of My Life (2005)The Story of My Life is the fifth studio album released by American country singer/songwriter Deana Carter. The album peaked at #26 on the U.S. Top Country Albums chart and #150 on the Billboard 200. "One Day at a Time" was released in March 2005 as the lead-off single, and entered the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart for the week of April 9, 2005 at #57. It reached a peak of #55 after three weeks, although the song later reappeared on the chart for two additional weeks in late June-early July. The follow-up singles, "The Girl You Left Me For", "Sunny Day", and "In a Heartbeat", failed to enter the chart altogether.Album InfoThe Chain (2007)The Chain is the sixth studio album of American country singer/songwriter Deana Carter, first released in 2007. Since, the album has peaked at #60 on the US Country chart. The first and only single off the album, "On the Road Again," was released in 2007, failing to land on the
On this episode of Roger the Wild Child Show, we are joined by former Nashville recording Artist, Chad Brock, and singer/songwriter Tom Yankton!CHAD BROCK In high school, Brock played football & was offered a post-secondary scholarship to play sports. He turned down the scholarship, however, as his experiences in the school choir had convinced him to pursue a singing career. Brock moved to Nashville, Tennessee, to follow this dream, but he met with little success at first. In 1994, he signed a record deal with Warner Bros. Records, but he did not release any music for over three years.Warner Brothers and WCW got together to cross-promote Brock, and he trained at World Championship Wrestling's training facility, the WCW Power Plant. Chad wrestled for WCW from 1994 -1996, until an injury forced him to retire. He also appeared at several WCW events in 1999, where he was briefly involved in an angle with Curt Hennig. In 1998, Brock released his debut single, "Evangeline", which peaked at number 51 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks (now Hot Country Songs) charts. That song's follow-up, the ballad "Ordinary Life", went on to become Brock's first major hit,[1] peaking at number 3 on the same chart, as well as number 39 on the Billboard Hot 100. Following that song's success, Brock released his self-titled debut album. Its third and final single, "Lightning Does The Work", reached number 19 in 1999.Brock's fourth chart single was a rewrite of Hank Williams, Jr.'s signature song "A Country Boy Can Survive", a number 2 hit for Williams in 1981. Chad's version, which featured Williams and George Jones, was entitled "A Country Boy Can Survive (Y2K Version)", was re-written with lyrics pertaining to the Year 2000 problem (abbreviated Y2K). The song served as the first single from Brock's 2000 album Yes!. Its second single was the title track, which went on to become Brock's only number-one Billboard hit,[1] as well as a number 22 hit on the Hot 100 chart. The third and last single from Yes! ("The Visit") peaked at number 21.2001 saw the release of Brock's 3rd and final album for Warner Bros.. Entitled III, it was less successful than its predecessor. III had only one chart entry in "Tell Me How", which failed to make the Top 40. This album also reprised Brock's three highest-charting singles ("Yes!", "Ordinary Life" and "Lightning Does The Work"). Shortly thereafter, he signed to Broken Bow Records, then a newly formed independent label. Although he released five singles for Broken Bow, four of which made the charts, he never put out a full album.TOM YANKTONTom Yankton's rowdy, high-energy, multi-million streaming, wildly-talented brand of award-winning, party crowd entertainment wouldn't be complete without, 1.) Billy talks with 2020 Nashville Songwriter’s Hall of Fame Nominee Shawn Camp. They discuss Shawn moving to Nashville in 1987 to play fiddle for The Osbourne Brothers, writing “Two Pina Coladas” for Garth Brooks (which became a #1 hit), the Grammy and IBMA winning band, the Earls of Leicester, and playing John Prine’s Christmas Parties in Nashville with The Bring The Whole Damn Family Band. More about Shawn Camp Darrell DeShawn "Shawn" Camp (born August 29, 1966 in Perryville, Arkansas) is an American musician who performs country and Americana music. Originally signed to Reprise Records in 1993 as a recording artist, Camp charted two minor singles on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks charts that year. Since then, he has found success as a songwriter, having co-written hit singles for many country music artists, including Garth Brooks, Josh Turner, Brooks & Dunn, and Blake Shelton, although he continues to record his own material as well. Camp was raised in Perryville, Arkansas by a musical family. In 1987, he moved to Nashville, Tennessee and worked in the backing bands of such acts as The Grand Priarie Boys, Osborne Brothers, Alan Jackson, Suzy Bogguss and Trisha Yearwood. In 1991, he was signed to Reprise Records, with two minor Top 40 singles charting in 1993. He later left the label over creative differences, but continued to write songs for other artists. Camp's first Number One as a songwriter came in early 1998, when Garth Brooks reached the top of the Billboard country charts with "Two Piña Coladas", a song co-written by Camp. Later that same year, Brooks & Dunn also reached Number One with "How Long Gone", another Camp co-write. Camp released a second album, titled Lucky Silver Dollar, in 2001. In 2006, he was nominated as Songwriter of the Year by the Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music; also, Billboard ranked him #10 on their 2006 list of Hot Country Songwriters. The same year, two songs co-written by Camp entered the country charts: "Nobody But Me" by Blake Shelton, and "Would You Go with Me" by Josh Turner, which peaked at No. 4 and No. 1, respectively, on the Billboard U.S. Hot Country Songs charts. Camp also co-wrote Turner's 2007 single "Firecracker" and George Strait's 2008 single "River of Love".

She is a three-time GRAMMY Award-winner who has achieved global success as, among other accomplishments, a performer, songwriter, frontwoman for ska-punk heroes No Doubt, and multi-platinum solo artist. To date, she’s sold more than 50 million units worldwide, including her four-times-platinum debut solo album ‘Love.Angel.Music.Baby.’ The 2004 release delivered the hit singles “Rich Girl,” “What You Waiting For?”, and the Pharrell Williams-produced No. 1 hit “Hollaback Girl.” Her 2015 solo album, ‘This Is What the Truth Feels Like,’ debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. Most recently, she released her new reggae-tinged single “Let Me Reintroduce Myself”, which she co-wrote and recorded in quarantine with our very own, Ross Golan. The single finds her reminding fans of what she does best: create vibrant, uplifting music that is real and honest to who she is as an artist. “Let Me Reintroduce Myself” caps off a busy 2020 for Stefani. She had two top 10 hits on Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart with fiancé Blake Shelton, “Nobody But You” and “Happy Anywhere.” And her holiday album, ‘You Make It Feel Like Christmas,’ was just reissued with two new songs, including Ryan Tedder co-write “Here This Christmas.” And The Writer Is… Gwen Stefani!Artwork: Michael Richey White See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Moseying onto the scene with a surprise breakthrough, Atlanta's Lil Nas X merged the pastoral tones of country music with hip-hop, putting his spin on a subgenre dubbed country-trap. Like similar experiments by Young Thug and Lil Tracy, the hybrid was an unexpected success for the rapper: his debut single, "Old Town Road," was a viral hit on social media and streaming, sending him toward the upper reaches of the Hot 100. By the summer of 2019, it was certified multi-platinum and number one across the globe. Born Montero Lamar Hill, he issued the 2018 mixtape Nasarati before releasing "Old Town Road" at the end of the year. The track went viral on social media and, once it broke into the mainstream, it accumulated millions of plays on streaming services. Sampling Nine Inch Nails' instrumental "34 Ghosts IV," "Old Town Road" clocked in at just under two minutes but managed to climb into the Top 15 of the Hot 100. While the song could also have topped the Hot Country Songs chart, Billboard made the decision to remove it from the running for not containing enough country music elements. The controversy only helped boost plays and "Old Town Road" continued its climb up the main chart. In March 2019, Lil Nas X signed with Columbia and issued the follow-up single "Banzup'." Even with that second single, "Old Town Road" continued to climb the charts and dominate radio airplay, riding a Billy Ray Cyrus remix toward number one in markets from Australia to Germany. In the U.S., the track eventually topped the Hot 100, spending no less than ten weeks atop the chart. In June 2019, his eight-track collection 7 was released. The eclectic EP included both versions of "Old Town Road" and newer material that ranged from mainstream rap and pop styles to takes on alternative hard rock. The song "Rodeo" revisited Lil Nas X's country-rap cowboy persona and included a cameo from Cardi B.
Brooks & Dunn is an American country music duo consisting of Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn, both vocalists and songwriters. Founded in 1991, the duo signed to Arista Nashville that year. They have released 50 singles, of which 20 went to No. 1 on the Hot Country Songs charts and 19 more reached Top 10. Two of these No. 1 songs, "My Maria" (a cover of the B.W. Stevenson song) and "Ain't Nothing 'bout You", were the top country songs of 1996 and 2001, respectively, according to the Billboard Year-End charts. The latter is also the duo's longest-lasting No 1 single on that chart at six weeks. Several of their songs have also reached the Billboard Hot 100, with the No. 25 peaks of "Ain't Nothing 'bout You" and "Red Dirt Road" being their highest there. Brooks & Dunn also won the Country Music Association Vocal Duo of the Year award every year between 1992 and 2006, except for 2000. Two of their songs won the Grammy Award for Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal: "Hard Workin' Man" in 1994 and "My Maria" in 1996. All but two of the duo's studio albums are certified platinum or higher by the Recording Industry Association of America; their highest-certified is their 1991 debut album, Brand New Man, which is certified sextuple-platinum for shipments of six million copies.

In this re:blurb episode, we explore the history and theory of the rhetorical concept of genre. First, we take a tour through the classical genres of forensic, deliberative, and epideictic speech, before moving on to contemporary theories about genres' profound and complex social functions. In doing so, we describe how genres mediate everyday social interactions through communicative rules and norms, as well as how political power dynamics affect gatekeepers' decisions about what kinds of practices are allowable within particular genres. Then, we're joined by Martha Sue Karnes, a PhD student in the Department of Rhetoric and Writing at The University of Texas at Austin, to discuss the genre-based controversy surrounding the hit song “Old Town Road” by Lil Nas X. OTR was notoriously removed from Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart because, according to Billboard, it did not adhere to the genre norms of country music. Through this analysis, we take a closer look at the kinds of social actions that Lil Nas X has accomplished through “Old Town Road” over the course of its viral popularity — actions which may help explain why the song has maintained its place at the top of the charts for 17 weeks running.“Old Town Road” Videos Referenced:Original versionRemix feat. Lil Nas X's "Old Town" was initially released independently in December 2018, and gained popularity on social video sharing app TikTok. The song achieved a rare feat in Billboard history when it simultaneously charted on the Billboard Hot 100, Hot Country Songs and Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs charts in March 2019. However, Billboard quietly removed "Old Town Road" from its Hot Country chart for "not [embracing] enough elements of today's country music." What? Why? How? Hello! And welcome to another edition of the Inside The Newsroom podcast newsletter! Today’s guest is... Shane Morris, former music label all-rounder for Sony, who now runs his own digital media company. I came across Shane on Twitter after his thread on country music’s problem with racism vent viral, and he turned out to be even more knowledgable about the industry than I thought. We got into a host of interesting stuff about the Lil Nas X ordeal, who runs music and what’s exciting about the industry today. Below I’ve provided more context on everything we talked about. Enjoy!Like Inside The Newsroom? Do us a solid and tell a friend or colleague who might enjoy it and subscribe.I Saw This in the News, What Actually Happened? When 19-year-old Lil Nas X — real name Montero Lamar Hill — dropped his single “Old Town Road” a few years ago, he struggled to get any traction. Finally, on the video sharing app TikTok (more on this later), the song categorized as “Country Trap” exploded in popularity and surged on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart. But as it neared No. 1, Billboard pulled it, citing that the song “incorporates references to country and cowboy imagery, but does not embrace enough elements of today’s country music to chart in its current version.” Uh oh is right…Andrew R. Chow, TimeThe Song In Question…Tell me it’s not catchy… but is it country?Does Country Music Have a Race Problem? It’s easy to sit on the sidelines and speculate in a newsletter. So let me say this as an avid country music listener (I’m listening to Florida Georgia Line as I write this): I’m not ready to brand the entire country genre racist. Sure there are racist individuals working for the labels and even some artists, but to give it a blanket label is unfair. I think it’s more about the lack of access into the industry, and transcendent artists such as Lil Nas X will do a great deal for breaking down boundaries for the future. Marissa R. Moss, Los Angeles TimesWhy Do We Even Have Genres Anyway? The real question we should be discussing is how to mitigate the importance of music genres, which are archaic functions exacerbated by the rise of iTunes, Spotify and others. Ultimately, genres satisfy deeply rooted human traits wired into our brains that allow us to stay in control to make sense of new experiences. As much as I don’t like it, I won’t be able to stop humans from putting things into categories, so I guess music genres will have to stay. Scott Barry Kaufman for Psychology TodayBefore I Forget: What the F*** is TikTok?Good question. As a 27-year-old, it’s not every day I call myself an old fart, but there’s no way I’ll ever make it onto TikTok. Anyway, to better understand how Lil Nas X blew up, we must know where the kids hang out. Similar to Snapchat, TikTok is apparently an app known for users lip-syncing and acting-out memes over music. Videos using ‘Old Town Road’ as backing music have been viewed more than 67 million times. #Yeehaw.Sarah Perez, Tech CrunchSo Who Does Control the music industry?Depends on who you ask. Thirty years ago the ‘Big Six’ gripped the industry, i.e. Warner Music, CBS, MCA, BMG, Capitol-EMI and PolyGram. Through a series of mergers and acquisitions, we now have a ‘Big Three’ who account for three-quarters of global recorded music: Sony, Universal and Warner. But according to Rolling Stone, the five most powerful people in music don’t even work in the industry…Tim Ingham, Rolling StoneWhat’s Myspace up to?Once the go-to platform for streaming and uploading music, Myspace has been extremely busy as of late, but for all the wrong reasons. It was announced a couple of months ago that the platform had “accidentally” deleted 50 million songs, the result of a server migration project. But don’t fret, they apologized for the inconvenience.
