The Legends Masters Championship just went down this weekend off the heels of them taking on the Masters CrossFit Games in September. Bill and Chase sit down and analyze the programming of the 2024 Legends Championship.

The Legends Championship is taking place Labor Day weekend in Birmingham, Alabama.  Event Director Bob Jennings speaks with Tommy Marquez about why they chose Birmingham, the things they took into consideration while making the decision, how CrossFit has helped them throughout the process and why Labor Day weekend made the most sense. Sean, Tommy and Lauren talk about the decision, what they would like to see from a coverage standpoint and what they think might need to change moving forward.

We now have the full slate of dates for ALL of the CrossFit Games competitions, as the Legends Championship announced the details for the Masters' divisions. Brent Fikowski from the PFAA joins the show to shed some insight onto the current state of affairs for athlete exemptions, and why he thinks there is a better way forward for everyone involved.

“You look at some of these masters, older than me … you can't believe they're in their 50s and 60s, and let alone what they look like, but what they're doing, too. It's amazing.” Six-time CrossFit Games athlete Mike Kern joins host Adrian Conway on the show to share about his vast journey in CrossFit. Kern started CrossFit at 36 years old at the suggestion of his wife. He signed up for his first Open competition in 2013 and was hooked. Two years in, he decided to pursue his CrossFit Level 1 Certificate and soon after, he joined the staff at CrossFit Garden City. Kern made his CrossFit Games debut in 2016 in the Men's 40-44 division and finished second. He repeated this feat in 2021 and 2022 in the Men's 45-49 division, and most recently, Kern placed fourth in that division at the 2023 CrossFit Games in Madison. In today's episode, Kern tells his story of rekindling his desire to compete. He digs into why he became motivated to coach and how he juggles his roles in his family, and as an athlete, coach, and affiliate owner. As a 48-year-old masters athlete, Kern dives into how his training has changed over the years, explains the importance of recovery and nutrition to optimize performance, and shares how he prepares for competition. He also explains how CrossFit holds a big place in his family's life and offers his perspective on the evolution of the sport. Kern is co-owner of CrossFit Garden City. In addition to being a perennial Games athlete, he is a CrossFit Level 2 Trainer, a husband, and a father of three girls. This is one of the premier Crossfit masters events that took place on December 8-11th of 2022. We both had athletes compete in the competition and decided a review of the events and programming would be fun to discuss with our audience. The gang wraps up the Legends Championship and talks a little bit about WZA.

On this episode, Sean talks with 9-time CrossFit Games qualifier and 4-time Masters Champion Dave Hippensteel.  Dave recently competed in the Legends Championship in San Diego, California and finished 2nd in the 65-plus division.  He talks about how he found CrossFit, how sports helped him find direction when he was young, how CrossFit can improve Masters programming at the Games and what sport he hasn't try that he would one day like to take on.

Val Voboril is a 6-time individual Games competitor who finished on the podium twice in her career.  She recently competed at the Legends Championship in San Diego where she took 1st in the 45-49 division.  Val talks about balancing life as a competitor, a teacher and a mother, her favorite memories from the Games, what her competitive future might look like and the things she's most proud of not only as an athlete, but also a teacher.

The offseason competitions continue as we head towards the end of the year.  The 2021 Legends Championship took place this last weekend in San Diego.  Sean talks about the experience at the event, some of the memorable moments from the competition and what the success of the Legends Championship could mean for Masters athletes moving forward.  The Dubai CrossFit Championship is this weekend.  Sean and Tommy discuss the favorites in both divisions and top storylines from the final event of the year.

As a result, more opportunities — like masters-specific competitions — have been created to shine a bright light on these talented and inspiring athletes.In this episode, Bob Jennings and Joe Linton, co-founders of The Legends Championship, join host Chase Ingraham to talk about the evolution of this annual masters-only competition, and what athletes and spectators can expect at this year's event. The Legends Championship began in 2017 as a one-day competition with 36 participants. Today, masters athletes from all over the world participate in multiple stages in the hopes of being one of hundreds to compete at the four-day final in San Diego, California. The competition begins Thursday, Dec. 9 and runs through Sunday, Dec. 12. Jennings and Linton have kept workout details close to the vest, planning to reveal more information hours before the events, and are excited to watch the masters in action. “With only releasing the workouts maybe 18 hours in advance,” Jennings says, “... all (the athletes) can do is game plan for them. … It's going to be really fun to watch those plans unravel and then see the athletes that can overcome that challenge mid-workout.”Athletes can also expect “to touch some (equipment) that (they) probably don't have at (their) gym,” Linton says. For fans unable to attend the competition in person, eight of the nine events will be streamed live on the Legends Masters Comp YouTube channel with CrossFit Games broadcasters Sean Woodland, Bill Grundler, and Annie Sakamoto commentating the event.
