Kristina Russell On Consultations & Creating Bespoke Colour Journeys

[187] It's safe to say we've come a long way since the first synthesised dye in 1863: products have evolved a great deal, and so have application techniques. Currently, you could probably list over 50 colour trends travelling back and forth across the globe, with some going viral overnight. For a first-time colour client, it's easy to think that anything is possible — after all, social media does make us feel like the sky is the limit in terms of creative colour. However, not everything is always possible, and most definitely not in one appointment. If you truly care for the result, you never just get a colour. You commit to one. That means agreeing to consultations, multiple appointments, home care, maintenance, being patient, and of course, being conscious it will require a certain budget. Featuring Kristina Russell (@colourkristina), salon owner, multiple award-winning hair colour specialist, educator, and podcaster herself, this week's episode explores what her bespoke colour journeys look like for both her and her clients. Hellen Ward On Using KPI Data To Assess Staff Performance

[186] Assessing staff performance is often a threatening process for both managers and employees. However, when you put in place clear KPIs, agree on a plan of action, and put your staff in control of their performance, you provide an opportunity to discuss progress and make aligning employee and company goals easier. The problem with statistics isn't the data itself; it's how you interpret it. Looking at figures alone to get an unbiased picture of an employee's performance might feel logical, but in the end, it will give you the wrong overview or assessment. Numbers without context are just that: numbers. Featuring Hellen Ward (@hellenwardltd), co-founder and managing director of Richard Ward Hair & Metrospa (@richardwardhair), this week's episode dives into her approach to KPI management, interpreting data, assessing staff performance, and so much more. The transforming and evolving qualities of natural materials are embraced, and the use of discarded materials gives new life to that which has been cast aside. What if the story we made ourselves about successful people and success too often failed us; made us doubt our worth, skills, knowledge, experiences? What if support from like-minded people and professionals was at times all we needed to keep going? Featuring Alison Alhamed, Vice President of Social Media & Community at R+Co, this week's episode takes a look into the meaning of "community," and discusses how brand-engineered ones can positively impact businesses, careers and lives altogether. Have you ever had a project become bigger than it’s supposed to? I know I have. It’s cost me time, money, and sanity. This is scope creep and it’s incredibly common. Fortunately, I’ve learned (the hard way) to avoid it. It's fine to go that extra mile for your clients. It’s great to give them more than they expect. But if you don’t have healthy boundaries, you risk getting taken advantage of. Your client should be honoring your time and effort by paying you for it, Supposed “small tweaks” and “just a little thing” become time wasters. Most of us can’t work for free. It can be tough to say no to a seemingly small ask. Yet, it’s crucial to respect yourself as well as your clients. Knowing when to do something extra for a client while also prioritizing your own needs is a difficult tightrope to walk.  Over the years, I’ve found ways to avoid scope creep. Being clear on who the project owner is and thoroughly explaining your process will help. Even explaining from the start that scope creep will mean extra charges can help to prevent it from happening.  Has scope creep taken over one of your projects? Let’s talk about it in the comments on the episode page!   In this episode What scope creep is and why it happens to everyone What to watch out for when doing work for friends and family Why your own priorities are never to be ignored Simple tips to prevent scope creep before it becomes an issue What to do once the project has grown beyond what it should   Quotes “You should overdeliver. You should be kind to your clients. You should let them experience the huge value that you bring. But what you also should do is have boundaries.” [4:13] “If you want to go the extra mile, do that. But in those cases, make sure you’re letting them know.” [15:19] “I’ve been fortunate enough to hear from a lot of different people who have been using the ASCEND Method over the past few years who have landed huge jobs and have had a lot of success because they have a process now; they have confidence in these meetings.” [20:12]   Links Learn the ASCEND Method here!   Additional Links: Check out the full show notes page Do you have something to share on this podcast? Humans Not Resources
Facilitating Transformation For Every Manager At Your Company w/ Emily Diaz & Jon Greenawalt

In recent years, we’ve seen the employee engagement and performance software market explode. Along the way, we’ve come to realize that success takes more than just providing people with the software tools they need. It’s education and training that makes the difference, and a deep commitment to having organizations transform. Meaningful transformation only comes when the deep and difficult work happens. Today, we’re talking with two of our employees who are helping other organizations train their managers to be far more effective.  Jon Greenawalt, our Chief Performance Officer, brings over 20 years of global, cross-industry consulting experience to help develop leaders and teams through progressive leadership and management development programs. Jon is the former Chief People & Culture Officer at SharkNinja, where he built the Talent Development function, trained over 500 leaders and managers during his tenure, and implemented 15Five across the entire 1,600 global full-time employee population. Emily Diaz is our Director of Transformational Services, a division she created after identifying the need for organizations to teach ‘vital skills’ to their people, skills which in turn supercharge the impact of 15Five’s performance management software. Since joining our founding team 7 years ago, she has served as advisor, trainer, and coach for companies across all industries — including Visa, Tesla, and Citrix. Emily’s experience across domains informs the creation of unique and powerful programs that train core professional competencies. In this episode, we discuss the future of performance management that incorporates intuitive, empowering software, but also services and ongoing education. We've realized that helping employees and managers form new habits and skills leads to high-performing and healthy organizations. By being transformative in this way, meaningful changes occur that result in lasting positive change. Professional services are usually about helping companies succeed with a (software) product. These do provide help with how people use the software to improve their work and possibly even to contribute more. But that’s largely a transactional process. Transformational Services is a partnership whereby people are taken through a process where they permanently change their mindset and behaviors in order to thrive.  This is often hard work. It begins with a desire to grow and from there a thorough examination of old practices and mindsets. Hard truths will be confronted. People will stretch beyond the familiar. In the end, when people realize that work can be a source of satisfaction and personal growth, they’ll build a better business environment. What transformative changes would you like to see in your company? Let’s chat about it in the comments on the episode page!   In this episode What transformation actually means for individuals and a company Building an environment of positivity by deconstructing old mindsets How people learn including repetition and feeling discomfort Why failures should be celebrated Reframing soft skills as vital relational skills required for any high-functioning organization   Quotes “We’re a mission-driven company. 15Five is not just in the business to create a widget, a tool. We’re actually here to transform the world of work.” [4:38] (Emily) “Transformation is hard work. Yet it’s important work. The benefit of it is, even though it may be challenging to have that breakthrough and move yourself to the next level, it’s an amazing experience.” [13:48] (Jon) “It has to be okay to grow. The best environments are the ones that make it cool to grow. That’s what it’s all about. We’re never done growing.” [19:26] (Jon) “There’s a spectrum where you need to learn how to relate to your people in a way that still puts the responsibility of their own growth with them.” [34:10] (Emily)   Links Learn more about our transformational services 15Five’s Best-Self Academy   Find 15Five online Follow 15Five on Facebook | Twitter | Linkedin

In this episode, Dr. Wright interviews sports personality Ernie Johnson, Jr., who is the host of Turner Sports’ NBA coverage and TNT’s Emmy award-winning program, Inside the NBA. He is the studio host for Turner and CBS’s NCAA Division 1 Basketball Championship coverage, and does play-by-play reporting for TBS’s exclusive coverage of the MLB and the PGA Championship.  Ernie has covered many major sporting events and earned various awards, holds degrees from Henry W. Grady College of Journalism and the University of Georgia, has been married to his wife Cheryl for nearly 38 years, and is the father of 6 children. Dr. Wright asks Ernie to explain how he came to be where he is now as a man of faith in the public sphere, and Ernie recounts his turning to Jesus in December of 1997 under the ministry of IWU graduate Kevin Myers, as well as the way this turning point actually helped him to be better at his job as a sportscaster.  Ernie uses the analogy of a pie to describe the role of faith in his life; rather than being a piece of the pie, as some other element of his life, his faith is the crust that holds everything together and impacts all other parts of life.  In his work, Ernie responds to the real-life events happening based on ‘who he is’, and has a platform to speak about his faith because it is part of ‘who he is’.  Ernie discusses his role on Inside the NBA, and clarifies that his colleagues respect him as a person of faith because he’s true to himself and they see what really matters to him.One of the most important things in Ernie’s life is his family, and Dr. Wright asks about the challenges that have come along with Ernie’s unique family situation.  Ernie and his wife adopted four children after having two biological children, and three of their adopted children have special needs.  One of their children, Michael, has muscular dystrophy; he is susceptible to many different health issues, and has been on a ventilator for 9 years.  There are challenging points in the parenting journey, but Ernie is proud of and thankful for each of his kids.  He has found a great teammate in his wife, and has settled into a healthy rhythm with his wife of giving each other needed time away when they get tired.  The conversation concludes with the topics of Cheryl’s work, ways Ernie’s experience has shaped his ways of relating to others, the value inherent in all people, Ernie’s awards, and advice for people wanting to enter the same field as Ernie.Links:Learn more about Ernie, Turner Sports, and Inside the NBA.Learn more about IWU grad Kevin Myers and his ministry.Learn about Indiana Wesleyan University and its president, Dr. David Wright.

Turning the Tables – An Interview with Host David Wright

Practicing The Art Of Faithful Presence

This episode of the Practicing the Art of Faithful Presence podcast features host David Wright, president of Indiana Wesleyan University, as its guest. Scott Todd, executive director of marketing communication at IWU, serves as the episode’s host, and helps listeners gain valuable insight into David’s life, mission, and purpose. In his role as president of IWU, David has the privilege of spending a lot of time with both people of faith and unbelievers. He has noticed that many unbelievers don’t even know any Christians in the public sphere, and this realization sparked Practicing the Art of Faithful Presence, which aims to help Christians share their stories about how their faith impacts their work in the world.David was born in Manila, the capital of the Philippines, where he lived with his family until he was 15. David’s parents moved to the Philippines as missionaries in 1951, and David spent his formative years watching his parents work at a Bible college campus on the island of Luzon. David had no personal knowledge of the United States until 1970, when he and his family moved to Marion, Indiana, and David enrolled at Marion High School. Following high school graduation, David attended IWU (then Marion College), where he met his now-wife Helen. The pair met attending church revivals together, and spent years abroad doing missionary work in Haiti and England post-graduation. David and Helen now have two daughters and four grandchildren. While a student at IWU, David never expected that he would eventually become the president of the institution. He planned to become a pilot, until he took the intro to Bible course at IWU with Dr. David Thompson. In that class, God began opening his heart to study the Bible, and David decided that he would like to teach Bible one day. After graduating with his Christian Ministries major and spending a few years abroad, David was recruited to run the masters program for ministers at IWU, which eventually became Wesley Seminary. Besides three years that David spent in California, he has been working for IWU since 1994. David’s dream job at IWU was the provost position, and once he had secured it, he thought he would retire in that position. However, when IWU’s president decided to retire and David was chosen as the replacement, David decided to do the job “with all of his heart.” The hardest part of the job, David says, is the weight of the responsibility of this wonderful place that serves 14,000 students and 2,500 employees. However, there are so many joys that come with the presidential position; David loves the students, the faculty, and the staff, and loves to see God working in their lives. It is one of his greatest joys to watch alumni go out into the world and see their lives be testimonies to the power of God. While the post-COVID world looks bleak for higher education, David is not pessimistic about the future. He states that IWU has responded to the challenge magnificently, and that challenges like these are when we do our best work. He highlights three challenges that will face IWU: 1) the changing sense of the value of a college education in the world, 2) the economic challenges in the US, and 3) the challenge of staying faithful to the mission of and God’s purpose for IWU. IWU’s goal is to provide students with a Christ-centered foundation on which to live their lives. David believes that to fully understand God’s world, you must experience the “tapestry of culture and people that God has created.” David is committed to the belief that you must be exposed to the people and the thinking of many different cultures; every belief isn’t right, but every belief is valuable. To end the episode, David shares a passage from the Bible that has been a “touchstone” for his life ever since God gave it to him: Isaiah 41:9-10, which says, “I took you from the ends of the earth, from its farthest corners I called you. I said, ‘You are my servant’; I have chosen you and have not rejected you. So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”Links:Learn about Indiana Wesleyan University and its president, Dr. David Wright.Connect with David on LinkedIn
