Unwrapping Your Spiritual GiftsInterview with William GarvinIn this Faith and Family Fellowship episode, Dallas interviews author William Garvin.About the Book:At our 'new birth', we are given 'GIFTS' by God. The first gift is the Holy Spirit and through the Holy Spirit we receive 'SPIRITUAL GIFTS'. Every Christian has received at least one gift, some more. These gifts are given so we might; Worship God - in spirit and truth, hear and respond to His Voice, be identified with Him, and overcome the works of the devil. But how do we unwrap and use these gifts God has given? That is why this is written! In this 'time of the falling away', we must know that our spiritual gifts are given to enable EACH of us to successfully contribute to the spiritual warfare that the 'Body of Christ' MUST fight.Every good soldier must know HOW to use his weapons. The difference with us is that we have 'spiritual weapons' that can Only be operated by spiritual means. Under the 'controls' directed by the Scriptures, we are to use the 'gifts' to 'discern' the spiritual things of God, from that which is evil. God is enlisting ALL His people, not just leadership, to activate, 'the weapons of our warfare' that when done in the unity and fellowship with other Christians, can 'pull down strongholds'.Praise GOD! Elder William L. Garvin has served as Pastor of Home Ministry Outreach Church (HMOC) in Gary, Indiana, USA, since 1995. He and his wife, -and co-pastor-Beverly Joyce, have been married for fifty-plus years; they've been blessed with four adult children, son Macy, daughter Kelley, son David, and daughter Rachel (Mansoor) Leh. Watch the first session and learn more at biblecourse.ca. ---Kim Phuc Phan Thi is known around the world as “The Girl in the Picture.” In 1972, at the age of 9, she was immortalized in a Pulitzer Prize-winning photograph that shows her screaming and running naked down a road in Trang Bang, Vietnam, after having her clothing burned off by napalm. A living symbol of the atrocity of war, she is the founder of The KIM Foundation International, a nonprofit dedicated to providing funds to support the work of international organizations that provide free medical assistance to children who are victims of war, violence, and deprivation. Mrs. Phan Thi has suffered many hardships since that day in 1972 including several years of painful burn therapy, but her spirit has always remained strong. Inspired by the physicians who helped her survive, she decided to become a doctor; but her pre medical studies in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) were interrupted in 1982 when the Vietnamese government removed her from school to act as a “national symbol of the war.” Four years later the government permitted her to continue her studies in Cuba, but health issues put an end to her plans to become a doctor. It was in Cuba that Mrs. Phan Thi met her husband, Toan. They married on September 11, 1992. While on the way back to Havana after their honeymoon in Moscow, the couple defected to Canada during a one-hour layover in Newfoundland, Canada. They now live near Toronto, and Mrs. Phan Thi travels the world as a UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) Goodwill Ambassador for the Culture of Peace. Kim Phuc Phan Thi has received seven honorary doctorate degrees from universities in Canada, Australia, the United States, and Mexico for her efforts to help children and end world conflict. She is an Honorary Member of Kingston Rotary, an Honorary Member of St. Albert Rotary, a Member of the Advisory Board for the Wheelchair Foundation, an Honorary Member of the Canadian Commission for UNESCO, a Member of the Advisory Board of Free Children's Foundation in Canada, and the World Children's Center in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. Mrs. Phan Thi is also a recipient of the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal, the 2004 "Order of Ontario,” as well as the International Peace Prize presented in Dresden Germany, February 2019. Kim is the author of Fire Road, her personal memoir, which has been translated into ten languages.

Join the conversation in our community at https://butjesusdrankwine.com/community. In this honest and hope-filled conversation, Christy and Meade welcome Jill, a beloved member of the But Jesus Drank Wine leadership team, to share her powerful story of breaking free from alcohol and drawing closer to God. After ten years of trying to moderate her drinking, Jill was inspired by Christy's sobriety story in the summer of 2023 and made the bold decision to stop drinking entirely. What followed was a journey of spiritual renewal, mental clarity, and deeper intimacy with God. Jill opens up about the subtle ways alcohol had taken hold of her life—emotionally, physically, and spiritually. She shares how it consumed her mental energy, fueled guilt and shame, and ultimately stood in the way of the peace and purpose she longed for. Through surrender, community, and daily obedience, Jill experienced true freedom—and now encourages others to do the same. This conversation is especially meaningful for women navigating caregiving, motherhood, and the pressure to “keep it together.” Jill's courage to speak up and step out is a reminder that the cost of honesty is far outweighed by the gift of freedom. What You'll Learn in This Episode: Why moderation isn't always harmless—and what it might be costing you How alcohol can quietly become a spiritual and emotional burden What it means to truly surrender a habit to God The role of testimony and vulnerability in personal transformation Encouragement for women in the “sandwich generation” carrying invisible loads How community and faith walk hand-in-hand toward lasting sobriety Join our private, small-group coaching space, The Missing Peace, and get BJDW all-community access for free! https://butjesusdrankwine.com/coaching Order Christy's book now available! Should we expect persecution for our faith? Is that really what the Bible says?We don't all suffer persecution. Contrary to how some Christians interpret 2 Timothy 3:12, a lack of persecution doesn't indicate a lack of passion for God. So what is it that causes some Christians to be persecuted and some not?In this punchy and compassionate episode, Michelle and co-host Stuart reveal a major reason why Christians are persecuted, and the anti-God systems behind it.. They share experiences of mild persecution such as job dismissal and interrogation, comparing them with extreme forms of persecution in countries such as North Korea, China, and the kinds of words used by authorities to enable detention of Christians on false charges. They delve into better understanding of the theological context of persecution, referencing biblical scriptures and the experiences of early Christians. They highlight current cases of imprisoned Christians emphasizing the importance of praying for those who are imprisoned for their faith.Listen to discover: Why we don't experience serious persecution in the West, why it's increased, and what to do about itHow scriptural misinterpretations regarding persecution produce unnecessary guiltThe true context in which the Apostle Paul talked about persecution Discover how your prayers can make a difference to those imprisoned, and join in with praying for them for strength and for their release. Join the conversation in our community HERE! In this empowering episode, Christy and Meade welcome author and speaker Laura Smith for a rich conversation about her latest book, Brave Woman, Mighty God. Laura—now a 15-time published author—shares her heart behind the book's message and reminds us that strength doesn't come from “girl power” but from God power. Together, they explore the stories of bold biblical women like Mary Magdalene, Sarah, and others who did mighty things—not because they were fearless, but because they were faithful. Laura unpacks how faith invites us to overcome hustle culture, live out our God-given purpose, and root our strength in Christ, not in performance. Drawing from both Brave Woman, Mighty God and her previous book The Urgency of Slowing Down, Laura encourages listeners to let go of burnout culture and embrace restorative spiritual rhythms. The conversation gets personal as the hosts reflect on their own struggle with hurry, the importance of screen sabbaths, and how true rest is found in presence with God, not productivity. This episode is filled with scripture, wisdom, and compassion for women who want to trust God more deeply—especially in seasons of waiting, struggle, or uncertainty. If you've ever doubted your calling, wrestled with comparison, or felt worn down by the world's demands, this conversation will meet you right where you are. They also touch upon the psychological impact of words based on neuroscience research. The conversation includes practical advice on making positive affirmations and confessions, how to use declarations of faith in the down-to-earth situations of life, their own experiences, and the importance of aligning one's words with prayers of faith. The episode also looks at negative responses to the concept of using words of faith as an important principle put in place by God.The episode emphasises the creative and life-changing power of words, encourages listeners to be mindful and intentional with their speech, and to be good stewards of their words to generate positive outcomes in their lives.ABOUT THE HOSTMichelle has been a believer for over 37 years, involved in full-time Christian ministry for 35 years in six countries on three continents, and is a master of transition and cross-cultural expert. This week we are discussing ‘How Long, Oh Lord?' with Marty Solomon. The pain, chaos, and instability that leads to single parenting is so intense we want it to end as soon as possible—but it doesn't, and we don't know when it will. We feel like we're wandering in the desert with no relief in sight. Is it possible to find hope and not live in fear of the rug being pulled out when things are stable? Marty Solomon grew up in the Reformed tradition before attending Boise Bible College and getting his B.A. in Christian Ministries. In 2008 he studied in Israel with Ray Vander Laan and was challenged to grapple with his own Jewish heritage. As he learned more about the wider conversation surrounding the Bible, especially through a Jewish context, he began to develop BEMA Discipleship as a way to share his experience with others. He found his way into Impact Campus Ministries, seeing college students as in the perfect stage of life to experiment with the methods he saw in Jesus. Marty began leading trips of his own to Israel and Turkey in 2014. After a few iterations of his BEMA material, The BEMA Podcast was launched in 2016, making it accessible to a global audience. He and his wife, Becky, currently live in Cincinnati; they are committed to the work of ministry together and of raising their two kids, Abigail and Ezekiel. Join the conversation in our community at https://butjesusdrankwine.com/community. In this episode, Christy and Meade welcome back Pastor David Walters for an honest and theologically rich conversation on one of the most frequently asked questions among believers: Is drinking alcohol a sin? Together, they explore what the Bible actually says about alcohol—and just as importantly, why we ask the question in the first place. Is it about seeking permission? Wanting to avoid conviction? Or genuinely desiring to obey God? Pastor David helps unpack the heart behind the question, reminding us that walking with Jesus is less about rule-following and more about relationship, wisdom, and surrender. Drawing from key scriptures—including Genesis, Psalms, Ephesians, Proverbs, Romans, and 1 Corinthians—this conversation touches on themes like purity, self-control, freedom, and the impact of our choices on others. Pastor David also addresses the difference between God's recorded voice (through Scripture) and His revelatory voice, and how we can tune our ears to both. This episode offers not just biblical insight, but also practical guidance for anyone who's evaluating their relationship with alcohol, wrestling with cultural messages, or simply wanting to hear God's voice more clearly in their everyday decisions. What You'll Learn in This Episode: What Scripture says—and doesn't say—about drinking alcohol The deeper motivations behind asking if something is a sin Why spiritual maturity requires discernment, not just rules How to tune into God's voice through Scripture and prayer The role of personal conviction, wisdom, and love for others in decision-making Other Pastor David Episodes: Episode 13: Did Jesus Drink Wine Or Not? ABOUT THE EPISODEMichelle and co-host Stuart engage in an in-depth discussion about the controversial topic of prosperity, which they refer to from a previous episode as the 'dirtiest word in the Bible.' They explore why the concept of prosperity makes people uncomfortable, particularly within Christian circles, and argue that true biblical prosperity includes but extends far beyond financial wealth. The conversation looks briefly at some of the stigmas around the 'prosperity gospel,' societal perspectives on wealth, and covers the holistic nature of biblical prosperity that includes health, emotional well-being, and relational success. They also discuss the hypocrisy of criticising prosperity from a position of relative wealth and with honesty and humour combined encourage a balanced perspective that recognises prosperity as a blessing from God meant for the betterment of lives and broader evangelistic efforts and ministry.ABOUT THE HOSTMichelle has been a believer for over 37 years, involved in full-time Christian ministry for 35 years in six countries on three continents, and is a master of transition and cross-cultural expert. Ken Ham, founder of Answers in Genesis (AIG), joins Ray, E.Z., Mark, and Oscar to discuss the challenges Christian ministries face in an increasingly hostile world. Throughout his career, Ken has encountered opposition, yet he has seen God use these challenges to further the gospel. Protests outside The Ark Encounter are a regular occurrence, but instead of responding with anger, AIG staff members witness to protestors, demonstrating Christ's love. Ken shares that stepping out in faith, such as building The Ark, often seems insurmountable, but God makes a way. Ken's journey has been filled with trials, yet each step has reinforced his trust in God's provision. Historically, faith thrived in times of persecution. Ken explains that Christianity's influence in the West was once dominant, but secularism has eroded the foundation of biblical belief. Generation Z is increasingly distant from faith, though many in the church are awakening to the need for a stronger biblical foundation. A key point in the discussion is the importance of biblical authority. Ken explains that all reasoning is circular, but the Christian worldview is based on a virtuous circle, where the Bible provides a foundation for understanding reality. Without absolute truth, morality becomes subjective, forcing even non-believers to borrow from Christian principles when making moral claims.Ray reinforces the idea that opposition often fuels the spread of the gospel. The guys discuss how most non-Christians simply repeat arguments they have heard rather than forming well-reasoned objections. AIG equips believers with apologetics training, helping them defend their faith with clarity and confidence. Ken has written a devotional that merges apologetics with scripture, providing practical tools for engaging with a skeptical culture. Ken and the guys remind Christians that faith is not blind but responsible. Christians are called to step out in faith while using wisdom and discernment, trusting in God's sovereignty. Ken reminds believers that the ultimate solution to society's problems is the gospel. The discussion closes with a challenge to Christians to live fully for Christ. Athletes push themselves to their limits for temporary rewards, yet believers often hesitate to give their all for eternal purposes. Ken urges Christians to be all in, recognizing that every person they encounter is someone who will spend eternity either with or without Christ. With this urgency in mind, he encourages believers to go into the world with love, sharing the gospel fearlessly and pointing others to JesusSend us a textThanks for listening! The practice of pastoral visitation in homes has fallen on hard times. For many of our forefathers in the faith, however, it was deemed an essential part of ministry, enabling effective oversight of the souls of the people of God. This week, we 'revisit' the area of pastoral visitation, although for many of us, it may be the first time we've considered the nature and benefits of this practice for ourselves and those we may serve in the church. Throughout the conversation, Ali shares: How confession and vulnerability led to her breakthrough. The role of community and accountability in her healing process. The significance of the 40-day alcohol fast that changed her life. How sobriety brought unexpected mental clarity and personal growth. Ali is using her story to encourage other women navigating transition, faith, and personal growth. As a certified coach, author, and speaker, she equips women and families with biblical and practical resources to stay grounded in their faith in a world that constantly pulls them in different directions. Her story is one of grace, resilience, and radical honesty, reminding us that freedom is always possible—even for those in Christian leadership who feel like they should have it all together. JOIN THE BJDW COMMUNITY HERE! Mel Robbins' Let Them philosophy has taken the self-help world by storm. But is it really the key to peace and freedom? Or is there something deeper—something better—that God calls us to instead? In today's episode, we break down where Let Them aligns with biblical wisdom… and where it misses the mark. Through real-life experiences and scriptural truths, we explore why true peace doesn't come from just “letting them” but from fully surrendering to Him. We also share how embracing God's guidance—not just detachment—was the key to breaking free from alcohol and finding lasting transformation. What You'll Learn: Why secular self-help can only take you so far – Letting go sounds freeing, but true freedom comes from surrendering to God, not just stepping back. The danger of 'following your heart' – Culture says to trust your feelings, but Scripture reminds us that the heart can be deceptive (Jeremiah 17:9). How sobriety and faith intersect – Relying on mindset shifts alone can keep you stuck, while Jesus offers true renewal. Forgiveness vs. detachment – Instead of just cutting people loose, Jesus calls us to a higher standard: forgiveness, love, and grace. Navigating relationships through faith – Healthy boundaries and biblical grace can coexist—here's how to strike that balance. If you've ever felt exhausted from trying to control people, situations, or outcomes—this episode is for you. True peace isn't found in letting go… it's found in letting Him lead. Press play, take a deep breath, and let's dive in. Note: The Let Them language was first attributed to Cassie Phillips. Over the past two weeks I have traveled to Southern California and Colorado Springs – two areas that have long been considered evangelical “hot spots.” Some have even irreverently called Colorado Springs the evangelical “mecca.” That trip impressed on me that even in the arena of ministry headquarters, a sense of place matters. The producer for today's program is Jeff McIntosh. Until next time, may God bless you.

Today, we welcome Dr. Lisa Stanton to share her powerful testimony. Lisa opens up about her parents' amicable divorce left an emotional void she didn't know how to process. On the outside, she appeared to have it all—private school, sports accolades, and academic success—but beneath the surface, she battled loneliness, perfectionism, and crippling social anxiety. Her struggle with alcohol began early, with an immediate pull toward problematic drinking, and was soon compounded by severe eating disorders. While excelling academically and professionally, she led a double life—outwardly achieving, inwardly unraveling. The weight of it all finally became unbearable during the pandemic, when she was faced with a choice: keep running or surrender. Lisa takes us through the moment she gave up control and turned back to faith, discovering a healing far deeper than she ever expected. She shares the daily practices that helped her break free from destructive cycles, the misconceptions about recovery she had to unlearn, and the profound peace that comes from living in alignment with God's purpose. Her story is a testament to the fact that no one is too far gone, and that true healing—both physical and spiritual—is possible for anyone ready to surrender. If you've ever struggled with addiction, perfectionism, or feeling like you have to have it all together, this episode is for you. With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, we figured it would be a perfect time to drop in a much needed conversation on the topic of intimacy. In a world and culture that has sexualized the word intimacy, today’s conversation gets back to the basics of God’s original intent and design for intimacy. We also spend time peeling back the layers of intimacy such as physical, emotional, & spiritual intimacy as well. Joining us to do just that is a man who has one of the most impactful testimonies you will ever hear, Joshua Broome. If you’re not familiar with Josh’s story, it’s a testiment of the love, grace, and faithfulness of our God, where a former adult film star embarked on a life-changing journey to fill the void in his heart. Despite fame and success, he found emptiness. Battling depression and thoughts of self harm, Josh discovered the transformative power of Jesus. Now, he shares his story of redemption on podcasts, TV shows, and stages, spreading God's message of restoration all over the world. With a BS in Christian Ministries, our guest and his wife Hope have been married for seven years, raising their four sons in Dallas, Texas. His message is centered on the fact that no matter what you have done or what has happened to you the love of Jesus Christ stands ready to change your future. Whether you’re preparing for or repairing the relationship God has called you to, today’s conversation is a must hear as it’s filled with practical tips and strategies to recenter your heart on what matters most. Remember, love is not something you become better at, love is someone you become more like. We hope and pray that this conversation would not only impact you, but also those you love.
