In today's episode of Psych Talk I chat with Hannah Carlsrud, LMHCA about the rising demands of motherhood. Hannah discusses her journey into specializing in perinatal mental health and then we start the conversation by discussing many of the rising demands placed on mothers in our society, how they impact mental health, and how demands have changed over time. Hannah discusses some of the sacrifices moms have to make when it comes to balancing raising children with their other responsibilities, as well as the different roles and identities between moms and dads and how these different roles and identities impact mental health and partner relationships. We also touch on mom guilt - what it is and why so many moms experience it. When I think back to how women in the Bible were presented to me as a kid, so many of the stories were told in a way to show off their quiet grace and servitude, thoroughly stripping them of the rage or other big emotions any other human would feel in their place. We'll take a closer look at some of those stories and what it means to more fully express parts of who we are." - Kate Creech, MACP, LMHCA

So many things I love speaking about with Lucie Fielding on this podcast! I just heard her this past summer give one of the best keynotes of my life at the AASECT national conference. All about embodied eroticism and the stories our bodies tell. They are the author of Trans Sex, a groundbreaking book for clinical approaches. Lucie Fielding, PhD, MA, LMHCA, Resident in Counseling (she/they) is a queer, non-binary femme, and a therapist practicing in Virginia and Washington. She holds an MA in Counseling Psychology at Pacifica Graduate Institute (2018) as well as a PhD in French from Northwestern University (2008), where she specialized in erotic literature. Their background in literature attunes them to the many ways that cultural scripts inscribe themselves on our bodies and can inform our embodied erotic lives. In addition to their work as a therapist, Lucie teaches in the Sex Therapy Certificate Program at Antioch University-Seattle. They are the author of Trans Sex: Clinical Approaches to Trans Sexualities and Erotic Embodiments (2021), which was named a finalist for a 2022 Lambda Literary Award (Lammy) in the Transgender-Nonfiction category. There are often family dynamics that need to be dealt with while a child is struggling with substance use, or while they're in treatment. We need to understand our own traumas, areas of enmeshment, ways we might be contributing to the issues...and none of these are easy to sort out on your own. That's where a therapist can step in.Laura Richer is a therapist, coach, podcaster, and lover of all things mental health.
