Episode SummaryErin and Rachel travel 700 years into the future to discuss WALL-E (2008), Pixar's robot romance with an unintentionally anti-capitalist message. Fatphobia and misogyny make this dystopian tale unwatchable despite its endearing protagonist, striking animation, and moments of nostalgia. Episode BibliographyThe 81st Academy Awards | 2009. Today on The Neil Haley Show, Neil "The Media Giant" and Kim Sorrelle of The Love Is Podcast interview Dr Beth Willman. Dr. Beth Willman joined LSST Discovery Alliance on September 7, 2022. She is a leader in the science and management of ground-based astronomy facilities. Her 20 years of research accomplishments have utilized wide-field survey datasets that are precursors to the Rubin LSST. Her primary scientific focus has been near-field cosmology, the detailed study of the nearby universe to answer questions such as “How has the universe formed and evolved?” and “What is the nature of dark matter?” Willman led the research team that discovered the first ultra-faint dwarf galaxies (Willman 1 and Ursa Major I), now known to be the most numerous type of galaxy in the Universe. Willman was the Deputy Director of NOIRLab and the Lab's Project Director for the US Extremely Large Telescope Program. NOIRLab is the preeminent US national center for ground-based, nighttime optical, and infrared astronomy with a ~$100M annual budget supported by ~500 staff members located in Arizona, Hawai'i, and Chile. Rubin Observatory Operations is part of NOIRLab, along with Gemini Observatory, CTIO/KPNO, and the Community Science and Data Center. She served as Deputy Director of the Rubin Observatory construction project for three years. As Rubin's Deputy Director, she convened community-based initiatives in support of LSST science and led the development of Rubin's operations plan. Prior to her management role at Rubin, she chaired an LSST science collaboration and contributed to the original LSST Science Book released in 2009. Willman earned a BS in Astrophysics from Columbia University and a Ph.D. in Astronomy from the University of Washington and has held prize fellowships at the NYU Center for Cosmology and Particle Physics and the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard-Smithsonian.

Bioarchaeological studies of Pleistocene populations, examining practices like tooth ablation, facial piercing, and cranial modification, contribute to our understanding of social identities and population dynamics. Recent analyses of Ohalo II H2 in southwestern Asia and Oldupai Hominid 1 in Tanzania reveal dental evidence of intentional body modifications. Ohalo II H2 likely represents the earliest case of intentional incisor ablation in Southwest Asia, a common practice in Iberomaurusian and Natufian cultures. Oldupai Hominid 1 exhibits dental wear suggestive of facial piercings, a previously unknown practice in Late Pleistocene/Early Holocene East Africa. These early cases shed light on the cultural practices and social identities of Pleistocene populations. She has a Master's degree in International Studies from Claremont Graduate School and a Master's in Comparative Politics from Columbia University. She was a Fulbright Scholar in Zagreb, Yugoslavia, in 1971 and 1972. She retired in 2008 after fourteen years as director of the Confidence Clinic, a Focusing-oriented community wellness program for women. Since retirement she has written extensively about the program's history, its philosophy and practice, and its outcomes. She has also written and published six novels and a humorous short story about disappointed expectations. Our bodies hold our experiences in its cells. You feel your emotions in your body. (Pain, etc.) It starts like meditation, but with focusing you create an inner space and listen to Self and garner wisdom from it. Shift = noticing how to carry my experience of past trauma TODAY. It's always healing. The shift that happens is a big sigh of relief. Because now you know. A Knowing. A Clarity. A way to heal and understand yourself better. Your characters also (as they become more and more real) have past experiences that they feel in their bodies. Select a character (problem, won't do what I want, motivation issues, or discomfort with the character). Slow down and relax, feel your chair, your feet, aware of body, notice rhythm of your breathing, ... Bring your character into your body, see if you can sense your character's discomfort in a situation. Can you feel your character's body? Do they notice what they are feeling? Any physical discomfort? Sit with the experience. How is your character physically feeling it? Where is it? What is the quality of the sensation--lethargic, energetic, restless? Does it have a color? Soft, hard, loose, tight? What words can you use to describe it? When you have a strong sense of it, how does your character respond to it? If it is painful, how do they escape it? Hide from it? Run away? Whimper? What is their normal response? Do they have to respond out of their ordinary? Is this a normal response to them or brand new? Given nature of your plot, pause and write down the words about how character is feeling, etc. How aware are they showing their feeling? Show not tell. Write what they do. Is there an awakening for them? How do they act afterwards? Sit with your char, let your body feel your char's body, write down everything (even if it doesn't make sense), ask "What else?" Listen with compassion and curiosity. You want to understand. Not judging. If you do, your character will clam up on you. If I let characters do what they want to do, instead of plotting it, they get where I want them to be regardless, usually. (Anna) Use when you have limited actionable responses for characters. Deepen the char, improve the writing, character's interact with each other is more Real. Use this to develop metaphors. In the past few years, as we've navigated through turbulence and stress, the adage that we need to “place the oxygen mask on ourselves, before we can help others" has become more relevant. In this episode, Mentor Sue Willman (VP Care Collaboration for Athenahealth) shares her powerful story of living this truth. Sue was driven to change her personal narrative and self-expectations after enduring an overwhelming amount of stress that included the loss of parents, a series of new jobs, moving from the family home due to surgery, and having 3 of her adult children return home during Covid (one of whom needed support with long haul symptoms). The openness and wisdom that Sue shares during this conversation will resonate with many of us as an inspiring example of how to ride the waves of change.
In this episode, Zack chats with the CEO of Naf Naf Middle Eastern Grill, Greg Willman. We discuss Greg's journey to CEO, the approach towards prototypes/location mix, the secret to the brand's simplicity, how menu innovation plays a role and plans for 2024.
In this episode of Take-Away with Sam Oches, Sam talks with Greg Willman, CEO of Naf Naf Grill. This Middle Eastern fast casual was founded in the Chicago area, and Greg was the first franchisee, opening his first location in 2020. After the entire system shut its doors in March 2020 and seemed unsure how to proceed, Greg was part of a group that acquired Naf Naf, and he's now spearheading its rejuvenation, with nearly 40 locations open today and dozens more in the pipeline. Sam met up with Greg at the National Restaurant Association Show held recently in Chicago and he shared how his experience as a franchisee is guiding his time as CEO and why he thinks the fast-casual Middle Eastern and Mediterranean category of today looks a lot like the fast-casual Mexican category of 1998. In this conversation, you'll find out why:Understanding both sides of the franchisee-franchisor relationship is a major asset for a brand leaderFast-casual Mediterranean and Middle Eastern still have incredible growth potentialBrands with more unfamiliar cuisines should lead with whatever generates trialWhen it comes to growth, fish where you've caught fish beforeDelivery/carryout locations may be better suited for brands that are embedded in a market Getting from store 1 to 100 is hard — don't try to speed through itHave feedback or ideas for Take-Away? An especially risky kind of virus hunting aims to identify new viruses in animals that have yet to jump to humans. Imagine trips to distant caves and wrangling bats to pull blood and DNA samples. The hope is to use that knowledge to be a step ahead and develop therapeutics and surveillance that could help prevent a future outbreak or, worse yet, a deadly pandemic from erupting. But a year-long Post investigation by David Willman and Joby Warrick has found that such research may be putting the world at greater risk for the very thing it's trying to contain, as a result of potential leaks and accidents in the wild and in the labs. The Post discovered that the world lacks oversight for such high-risk research, yet a main driver of its expansion in recentyears has been the United States. Experts within the administration have been raising red flags. The covid-19 pandemic, Willman and Warrick continue, is forcing difficult and uncomfortable conversations around doing such research and how to responsibly prepare for and prevent the next big pathogen threat to humans.“There are thoughtful, well-informed scientific experts who are saying, ‘look, it's time for a reckoning. We have observable lessons from the pandemic. We need to apply those,'” Willman tells Post Reports.Read more: How controls on ‘gain of function' experiments with supercharged pathogens have been undercut despite concerns about lab leaks.NIH biosecurity advisers urge tighter oversight of pathogen researchLab-leak fears are putting virologists under scrutinyWhat we know about the origin of covid-19 and what remains a mystery. Alexandre Marc is a political scientist and economist with over 30 years of experience working in areas of conflict and fragility across four continents. Alexandre was the Chief Specialist for Fragility, Conflict and Violence at the World Bank, and is the lead author of the United Nations-World Bank flagship report Pathways for Peace: Inclusive Approaches to Preventing Violent Conflict (2018). He also co-led the preparation of the World Bank's Strategy for Fragility, Conflict, and Violence 2020-2025.This is the first episode in a series with Alexandre covering the Pathways for Peace report, the stories that underpin its core ideas, and his recent work on the geopolitics of fragility. We start by talking about Alexandre's upbringing and how traveling with his parents – an adventure worthy of an Indiana Jones movie - led him to discover the wonders of different cultures. Experiences such as staying in an archeological mission in Egypt, crossing Afghanistan and Iran by car, and a road trip from Paris to Jordan sparked Alexandre's interest in how different cultures coexist and led him to try to understand conflict. We then talk about to the relationship between the price of bananas and witchcraft in Cameroon – and we sure had questions about it! Alexandre then shares with us how caring about people, culture, and history helps you better understand the origins and dynamics of conflict, the need to differentiate between conflict and violent conflict, and how the rise in what he calls “conflicts of fragility” led to the Pathways for Peace report. The conversation also explores how actors, institutions, and structural factors can push a country towards peace or conflict, why peace is desirable, the dangers of horizontal inequality, and the importance of dignity. And there's so much more! Listen to the episode to hear Alexandre share many more insights into fragility, conflict, and peace. *****Alexandre MarcWebsite: https://www.alexandremarc.orgTwitter: https://twitter.com/AlexanMarc1International Institute for Strategic Studies : https://www.iiss.org/people/conflict-security-and-development/alexandre-marcInstitute for Integrated Transitions: https://ifit-transitions.org/experts/alexandre-marc/*****Mihaela Carstei, Paul M. Episode SummaryAnother critical and commercial success of the Disney Renaissance, The Lion King (1994) was a beast at the box office and on home video. It was also the first animated Disney animated film set in Africa. Despite (relatively) diverse casting and the incorporation of authentic African music, there's still plenty of racism to discuss, with some homophobia and questionable political commentary thrown in! Join us as we sit down with Frank Willman, a notorious dog man and teamster. Please endure the first ten minutes of bad audio, it does get better. He's a great storyteller with a wealth of experience getting the job done with just his black and white buddies. He was on the first leafy spurge grazing project with sheep in Canada and worked multiple ranched across canada promoting the Border Collie breed to cowboys. He can get any dog with an ounce of instinct to work their heart out for him whether its heading hundreds of cattle or hounds hunting coyotes. Tune in with a dying breed of old school handler, Frank Willaman.

He also writes about his experiences with Trans Rights Activists on his SubStack "William's Newsletter - Dispatches From The Gender Wars" after achieving Peak Trans in 2017, though he wishes he'd rather be doing something else other than having to wade into a fight that is ostensibly a women's issue." We've got a lot to jam into our last hour of the week today. We'll start with Jason Leopold, who has another two FOIA victories that earn him bragging rights. One of them resulted in 10 redacted passages from the Mueller report being made public(!). The other has to do with multiple allegations of CIA personnel and sex crimes involving children. But we'll move to a much more pleasant topic for the second half of the show. Variety's Chris Willman will join us to talk music-- specifically Peter Jackson's epic 8-hour "Get Back" documentary about The Beatles. Since Jason Leopold is, like me, a huge music-phile, he's going to stick around for the Chris Willman interview. The more, the merrier!
