Today's show rundown: Mark starts us off today introducing our Guest Richard Lyons (see Bio below for links and for links to his books). We are a week plus out from the election, and we still do not know who is running America. Chuck says everyone is trying to blame Trump and the people he backed. The real problem is Mitch McConnell who lost the Senate all on his own. He defunded all Nevada and New Hampshire...he decided who to accept in the Senate and who he wouldn't. This is Mitch Mconnell's mess and we are going to pay the price for it. Richard says it's disastrous to enemies of the Left, because we are divided. The elites on the Right don't like Trump, so anyone he supports or endorses, they make sure those people wont win. Trump coming out and going after Youngkin and DeSantis is a bad look. But Trump has been gone after since he came down the escalator, and it feels like he is on defense throwing lawmakers whenever he can. Again though...Trump's policies are outshined by his personality. He has great policies but Trump is just hard. Mark jump to NBC news story - pulling the story on Paul Pelosi. Miguel Almaguer - this guy did a report right as the event happened. This report had Pelosi and the attacker in the house for 30 minutes. NBC has scrubbed their website of any traces of this story, and they sent old Miguel to Siberia...what the heck is going on here...whats the real story, why are they hiding this original story, why wont they even talk about it? NBC has since suspended Miguel and now say "we cant comment on personal matters" BIO Richard C. Lyons is a multi-award winning, critically acclaimed author from the Midwestern United States. Retreat programs have always been a part of Faith Formation in Jesuit education. As we celebrate the history and heroes of Gonzaga, the Kairos retreat is a massive part of today's Gonzaga student experience. This very week, a new generation of Gonzaga Students are experiencing Kairos for the first time. They join 161 other retreat groups in a special fraternity of faith. How exactly did Kairos start at Gonzaga? The Kairos program existed at Loyola Academy in Illinois, and it caught the attention of Gonzaga Headmaster Fr. Roger Callan, S.J., who tasked Mary Ellen Whitcomb and (at the time) Mr. John Cecero, S.J. to adapt it to Gonzaga in 1984. In this visit, Fr. John Cecero, S.J., and John Cosgrove share their memories of the beginning of Kairos at Gonzaga. The seed of Kairos planted on Eye Street in 1984-85 has blossomed into something special; and its fruit has spread to Jesuit and Catholic Secondary Schools and Colleges across the Country, and Gonzaga is a major part of that story, as well. We'll also hear from current Gonzaga Campus Ministry assistant Maddie Davin. She'll share who the team members (adults and students) are making this week's Kairos CLXII happen. Another Kairos focused episode visit with Mary Ellen Whitcomb and Pat O'Neil '85 and John Goetcheus '85 is coming in the Spring.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

As "woke ideology" makes its way through the secular culture, one author Noelle Mering says it's actually on a collision course with Christianity. In the fall of 2020, at Loyola Academy, a tony Catholic prep school outside of Chicago, parents began whispering to one another about the loud and swiftly escalating political ideology pressing into all corners of their kids' education. High-paid diversity consultants were brought in for the sake of training faculty and students on Critical Race Theory and Woke ideology. But many of the parents, some very progressive, realized the consultants' message preached an agenda that is in direct conflict with that of the Gospel. Mering writes about the dilemma in an article in the National Catholic Register. On this episode of Lighthouse Faith podcast Mering dissects the disease of Woke ideology and its infiltration into all communities, as an evangelization of a doctrine at odds with Christianity. She said after the article appeared she got calls from several parents around the country saying the same thing was happening in their Catholic schools. Mering, the author of the book "Awake Not Woke," outlines three ways the Woke ideology assaults Church teaching: it rejects the individual person, even putting its ideology over parents' authority; it rejects reason, by squashing honest dialogue in a quest for power; and it rejects reverence for the authority of God. Mering writes: "What is rejected—reason, the person, and authority—the three characteristics of the Logos, which is the mind of God, communicated in the person of Jesus Christ, who is the author of, and authority over, all. Whether explicitly or not, he is the ultimate target of the woke revolt."
From our buddy Uncle Scott! "It all began about 14 billion years ago when I emerged out of nothingness. It was a really Big Event. Then about 4.5 bya I took on a new form. I was a bit spherical and plump, but not flat, and ready to start circling the neighborhood. About a half billion years after that I woke up to my surroundings and began to copy and replicate and imitate reality around me through movement and gestures. A lot happened after that and I’ll spare you the details, but around 6 million years ago I left home, I left my tribe, and went my own way. I thought I knew it all. Around 500,000 years ago, give or take a few hundred millennia, I found my voice. I began to graffiti my bedroom with posters of animals and such. I started to communicate with my parents who had died and my children who were yet to be born. And about 2,000 years ago I created a band, called the Christians. We started out small, and our leader had some pretty crazy ideas, but we eventually grew and became famous. There’s some interesting stuff about us on the web. Then about 50 years ago, things started getting interesting. I started to rebel and dance to the beat of my own drum. I got married to someone in that band and we called ourselves the Society of Jesus (or, if you want our social media handle - the Jesuits). Then I began to party like it's 1999 and we had a separation. Since then I’ve been teaching the young how to assume nothing and question everything, to know their story and inhabit it. But most of all, I try to encourage them to look beyond themselves and to be open to laboring and giving birth to a sustainable future that offers hope and newness. And now the less interesting origin story: I was born and raised in a practicing Catholic family. As a child I was curious about the long and rich history of the Judeo-Christian tradition as well as the rich symbolism it manifested. That led me to study history and languages at Arizona State University. At the same time, I became conscious of the growing economic disparity in the world and felt called to do something about it. Reading the stories of St. Francis of Assisi, and other saints who lived and worked with the most vulnerable populations, I decided that the best way to respond to that calling was to enter into service through the Church. I entered the Jesuits at age 25 and from there my desires to be with the most vulnerable were met. I worked with oncology and AIDS patients in Hollywood, tutored gang members in east Los Angeles, lived with the Lakota Sioux in South Dakota, worked in a shanty town in Guaymas, Mexico, and lived in an orphanage in Montevideo, Uruguay. Charlie marks the one year anniversary of "15 days to slow the spread" by outlining what we've learned in the past year of lockdowns, closed businesses, mental health spikes, closed schools, and draconian, authoritarian policies enacted by blue states and municipalities. What have be learned as a nation? Who was proven right? And who was proven wrong? Also Charlie recounts the little-told story of a Loyola Academy baseball coach who got fired by the woke mob even though he did absolutely nothing wrong. He is adored by millions and disdained by many others. Who is he? Where did he come from? What motivates him? How did he become so compassionate to the poor and marginalized? Mark Shriver set out to find answers to those and many other elements in the life of Jorge Marie Bergoglio. In his journeys through Argentina to the places where Pope Francis was born, lived, educated and ministered as a Jesuit, Shriver not only entered into the heart of Francis, he also came into deeper contact with his own faith, values and his motivation for doing good for others. His biographical journey into the life of Pope Francis has also led him to question even his own work as head of the nonprofit, Save the Children. Mark Shriver is the son of Sargent Shriver, who ran the Merchandise Mart here in Chicago and became the first head of the Peace Corps, and Eunice Kennedy Shriver, one of the founders of The Special Olympics here in Chicago. Mr. Shriver will be joined in conversation by Rev. Pat McGrath, S.J., president of Loyola Academy and visiting priest at Old St. Pat's Catholic Church.
