Beyond the well known municipal and lifestyle features that deservedly make Melbourne one of the world's most livable cities, lie the hidden suburban gems and insider secrets that only locals know about. We're not talking about the well known suburb draw cards, like Edinburgh Gardens, Albert Park Lake or Lygon Street. We're looking at the places that don't typically make the tourist maps and ‘what's hot lists.' Jarrod takes a journey to some of Melbourne's hidden gems and best kept secrets.

Hi coffee people! Today's episode features Brandon and Mitch, 2 of the 3 owners of Good Measure. Good Measure is a vibey cafe on Lygon Street in Melbourne's northside. During the day, they serve up delicious sandwiches and the very famous ‘Mont Blanc', a lightly sweetened filter coffee topped with whipped cream and an orange nutmeg spice. At night, this space transforms into a cosy, Japanese-inspired cocktail bar. With vinyls spinning, Good Measure will serve a stunning range of sake and unique signature cocktails, accompanied by snacks like their house made kimchi-fries. Rohan and Kirk unpack with the boys what it's truly like running Good Measure. You'll hear stories of the early days when Good Measure was just an idea and how that idea continually evolved into the cafe Melbourne now knows and loves. You'll also hear the hilarious side of this cafe (ahem, the time Brandon fell through the ceiling during a very busy Saturday) and uncover the challenges they face working in the hospitality industry. In coffee news, we're seeing a big increase of Americans drinking specialty coffee. Does this mean saying ‘goodbye' to Starbucks? We'll also discuss the Top 10 cities in the world for coffee, and if you're a proud Melburnian, you're not gonna like the outcome… If you're new here (happy to have you!), our show dives into some of the best coffee conversations on the internet, but we will always remind ourselves at the end of the day; It's Just Coffee! Big thank you to Brandon and Mitch for joining the show. Check them out on Instagram @goodmeasuremelbourne and follow us @itsjustcoffee so you never miss a drop. Biggest thanks to our listeners. We hope you enjoy this episode as much as we did!

After a bumper opening week of finals action, Bone and Buckets disagree about the flavour of Collingwood's victory over Melbourne and on the actions of one line-stepping Magpie (0:50). Was Carlton's victory over the 'ghost team' Swans really one of the great elimination finals (14:12)? Muzz's beloved Saints succumb to Adam Kingsley's cringeworthy, but successful finals mantra (26:00). And, after the 'terrifying' (and sexy) Lions struck fear into Richie, will King Kenny's critics ever forgive him if the Power go out in straight sets (37:19)?
Lehmo joins Jay Clark to analyse Carlton's impressive win over Collingwood. The boys discuss the lid being blown off on Lygon Street, how a piss up precipitated the form turnaround, Port's Nick Daicos blueprint, Mason Cox, an open season, Jade Gresham, Brodie Grundy, and more. -----------
Richie, Muzz and T-Bone hit the studio straight after the King's Birthday clash as the Dees shed their 'quasi' contender tag (1:10), before covering the baked-beans-on-toast encounter between the Swans and Saints (7:51), Bone froths over the Horn Dog's goal of the millennium against the actual Dogs (17:03) and does his best to praise the Hawks' freewheeling victory over the Lions (25:40), Richie presents a throwback Shai Watch out west (32:40), the Blues serve up another bloodbath against the Baby Bombers (40:06) and the boys play the A+ game with North Melbourne after their loss to the Golden Grub-led Giants (47:08).

I sat down with head chef and owner, Aseem Sood and his business partner, Kunal Bhardwaj at Kahaani in Lygon Street. Kahaani means story in Hindi and Aseem wants to tell the story of India's regions and history through his food, which he describes as “unreasonably authentic”. The pair looked for a while for a venue, originally imagining that South Yarra would be the place until they came across the space in Carlton. Aseem and Kunal did all the renovations themselves over five months, using as much as possible repurposed material, “handmade”, says Aseem, referring to the sanding of the table tops and the exposed brick wall on one side and a clay wall on the other. The bar is made out of an old wooden work bench with bright blue tiling around its base. Upstairs can be used for private dining and functions and is creatively filled with branches and greenery. Aseem and Kunal are currently working on a tiffin box lunch offering and for adventurous foodies, a surprise dish where apart from the protein, you won't know anything about the dish until it arrives at your table. Kunal made me a delicious chai and I very happily listened to their story.

Charlie Cheng…great name…owns Shinbashi Yakiniku in Brisbane and in Melbourne. I went in to the Lygon Street venue back in November 2018 when the restaurant reopened and I wrote about it for Broadsheet. It had actually opened a year prior but due to damage from a fire in a neighbouring restaurant had to be closed and completely refitted. Yakiniku is a style of Japanese barbecue where guests cook over the coals at their table and Shinbashi is particularly known for its high-quality wagyu beef. I had a chat to Charlie on the phone because he is up in Brisbane. Again, as for all in the hospitality industry at this time, Charlie has the Covid-19 crisis on his mind. My thoughts are with all hospitality owner and workers at this time.
The Unnoticed Murders of the Wycherley's and The Black Prince of Lygon Street...In October 2012, a woman called the Nottinghamshire police in England, to report that William and Patricia Wycherley had been killed 14 years earlier and she knew where their bodies were buried. If she was telling the truth, why had nobody reported the couple missing? And what did their daughter Susan Edwards and her husband Christoper have to do with it?Alphonse “The Black Prince of Lygon Street” Gangitano has been described as a loving husband and father and as a vile gangster and murderer. From the 1970's right through to the late 90's, the Black Prince ruled over Carlton, brutalising it's residents with extortion, drug dealing and murder. Mate of Christopher “Mr Rent-to-Kill” Flannery, enemy of Mark “Chopper” Read, he was leader of the feared Carlton Crew which included members Graham “The Munster” Kinniburgh, Mario Condello, Mick Gatto and Jason and Mark Moran. Seemingly unstoppable, the prince went too far and couldn't predict his best friend would turn on him.Become a Bloody Murder Patron (for as little as $1 per month, which you can cancel at anytime) and have access to dozens of Patron only episodes (including our whole first season!) with new patron only content added every month!Go to https://www.patreon.com/bloodymurderLevels $5 and over go into our monthly merchandise draws and get FREE stickers and hand-made Barney Badges!See our website! bloodymurderpodcast.com for all our social media links, contact details, a gallery, fabulous merchandise (check out our new Bloody Murder SHOES! and now STICKERS and BACKPACKS and DUFFEL BAGS!!) and much much more.Wanna buy us a drink? We are back in the shed after escaping to the big island in the north. First up we address a little housekeeping in the form of an apology to our episode 18 guest Jack, in essence for preventing him from completing a full sentence without being cut off for the first full 40min of the podcast. Haha sorry mateAnd with that squared away we revisit the delights of The Curtin Hotel in Lygon Street's delicious Cheesy balls, take a swipe at Dutton for his putrid shot at Ali France, his opposing candidate's disability which expands into a general discussion of the NDIS and beyond. Identity politics is getting a massive push from the right wing media in Australia as they attempt to "Kill Bill". How Identity politics, in general, suppress the evolution of our national identity and how days like Australia Day and Anzac Day are weaponised for one nationalistic and divisive narrative. The rabbit hole of colonialism in the context of Africa gets a look and Clarkys mate Adam Smith's equality of opportunity gets a mention with the shed more interested in the equality of outcome as it is in any decent community.
The Larrikin of Diamond Creek From Old Offenders and a few old scores (1923) By E.W Hornung Narrated by Denis Daly Today the fame of E.W. Hornung rests upon his stories about Raffles, the gentleman burglar. However, among his works are many other novels, short stories, poetry and reminiscences of the First World War, in which he served and during which his son perished. During the war, he developed an admiration for the Australian servicemen and an interest in that country. This whimsical story starts off in the Melbourne suburb of Heidelberg, which later became famous on two accounts. The first related to a local arts colony which later became known as the Heidelberg school and which included many celebrated Australian artists. Later, Heidelberg became the site of the athletes' village for the 1956 Olympic Games. Diamond Creek, which was initially established as a gold mining town, is now on the outer fringe of the metropolitan area. The other suburbs mentioned in the story, Carlton and Fitzroy, are close to the city centre, and have since become extremely gentrified. Lygon Street is in Carlton, and is noted for its restaurants and occasional visitations from gangland celebrities. JunkTime AFL podcast with Adam Rozenbachs and Michael Chamberlin
From Wayne Jackson Studios, Adam and Michael are joined by AFL legend Chris Judd to discuss his new book 'Inside'. So much to cover: life as an Eagle and a Blue, the Norm Smith plus the day to day life of a footy player. *Strong language warning* Note - both my guests and I do make informed choices to swear sometimes (not constantly, but the worst words you can think of may pop up), most often for comic effect. It's not a question of intellect or poor vocabulary - it's a definite choice. So bear that in mind if you have sensitive types within earshot. Unless of course you want to warp them, in which case, turn it up. In this episode of Bang On The Strillers, I, Geraldine Quinn, join music theatre/cabaret/comedy performer and fellow Wagga Wagga child Michelle Brasier (who is also a founding member of Backwards Anorak who had recently returned from yet another sold out UK jaunt and I'm not jealous at all). We discuss the point when grieving becomes hilarious, how art can help when your heart is broken, playing embarrassment roulette in public, spectacular accidents, coming of age in country Australia, badly written reviews, what it's like to have Malcolm Turnbull as your dad, being described as "a hungrier Rebel Wilson", how not to destroy your voice, making a fool of yourself in front of medical professionals, all with the rumble of Lygon Street, Carlton softly in the background. Featuring me losing my tiny ginger mind at two of the funniest stories I've ever heard. Here is a link to Michelle's article on art and grief. Photograph of Michelle Brasier by Evan Munro-Smith.
