Our Grand Tour now takes us back to the first decade of anime, and to the work of the ‘God of Manga' himself, the one and only Tezuka Osamu! The creator of series like Mighty Atom, Black Jack, and Princess Knight, Tezuka's Mushi Productions pioneered TV anime as we know it today, and Dororo is one of the towering achievements of their 1960s output. Based on the unfinished manga by Tezuka, and directed by the great Sugii Gizaburō, Dororo is a singular samurai drama about a wandering swordsman, Hyakkimaru, who battles demons to restore the 48 missing parts of his body sacrificed by his warlord father. Along the way, he meets a young thief named Dororo, and their many adventures make for some of the earliest manga and anime to directly engage with adult themes and imagery. Like the manga, Dororo on TV had some production shake-ups, essentially changing directions halfway through when Sugii departed the series amidst disagreements with Tezuka, but make no mistake: this is one anime you do not want to miss. Enjoy, and come back next week as we leap 50 years ahead to 2019 to talk about MAPPA's recent re-interpretation of Dororo! Season 4: Episode 4 This episode of Soundplay features the original student podcast, Play Like a Girl, interwoven with bits of interview with the podcast creators. The podcast is about phenomenal athletes who rocked the sports world and happen to be women. The episode here is called "Rowdy and the Mighty Atom." The podcast composers are Cassie Gove, Meg Gove, Cam Boisvert, and Ryan Kennedy. Here is the transcript for the Play Like a Girl episode.
Exploring the Unconventional: From Marrow-Tossing to Nail-Bending.In the vast landscape of sports journalism, there's often a gravitational pull towards the grandeur of major events and superstar athletes. Yet, there's a hidden world waiting to be discovered in the sidelines, in the quirky, the obscure, and the borderline absurd sports that defy conventional classification.Join me on a journey beyond the mainstream as we venture into the realms of nominal sports and pastimes that blur the lines between sport and spectacle. From the eccentricity of marrow-tossing to the peculiar thrill of gouda-rolling derbies in the Netherlands, we'll uncover the charm and idiosyncrasies of these unconventional pursuits. But beyond the surface amusement lies the heart of these stories, where we encounter individuals like John McGrath, a modern-day strongman with a story as compelling as any Olympic champion. Born and raised in rural Ireland, McGrath's path to strength and recognition was paved with challenges and determination.Through vivid storytelling, we delve into McGrath's upbringing in the hills above Waterford, where resilience was forged through adversity and hard work. From harvesting onions to rowing on the Blackwater, McGrath's journey is a testament to the human spirit's capacity for growth and transformation. As we follow McGrath's evolution from rower to strongman, we're introduced to the legacy of vaudeville legends like Joseph Greenstein, the "Mighty Atom," whose feats of strength captivated audiences in a bygone era. Through their tales, we glimpse the changing landscape of entertainment and the enduring appeal of extraordinary physical feats. The climax of our narrative unfolds on a stage in Newark, where McGrath, following in the footsteps of his idols, attempts a record-breaking feat of nail-bending. With each bend, he embodies the spirit of perseverance and dedication that defines the essence of sport, transcending the boundaries of tradition and expectation. In the end, what emerges is not just a story of athletic prowess, but a celebration of human ingenuity and the indomitable will to push beyond perceived limits. So join me as we celebrate the unconventional, the extraordinary, and the enduring spirit of those who dare to redefine what it means to be a champion, both on and off the field.Donate to The Luke Alfred Show on Patreon.Get my book: Vuvuzela Dawn: 25 Sporting Stories that Shaped a New Nation.Get full written episodes of the show a day early on Substack.Check out The Luke Alfred Show on YouTube and Facebook.
Have you ever heard of Mr Eats It All that consumed shopping carts, TV sets, razor blades, a coffin, and a 200 foot chain? Did Saint Francis communicate telepathically with animals? Who was the Mighty Atom and how did he survive a gunshot point black to the middle of his forehead? How did a man inflate and deflate himself on stage changing his body weight by 20 pounds several times in one night? What are humans capable of physically, mentally, and psychically? Atom Bergstrom joins us to talk about all of the seemingly impossible feats that people have achieved and make us question what we think we know. Today's podcast is with Logan Christopher, strongman, author, owner of Legendary Strength, and CEO of Lost Empire Herbs. He has been a prior podcast guest speaking on mental training and giving an expansive view of the components of strength in the human being. Logan has written several books, including “Mental Muscle” and “Powered by Nature,” which I have found to be impactful, alongside numerous other manuals on human movement, performance, and mental abilities. Logan is an expert in using the natural machinery of the body in connection with our environment to help us reach our highest potential as humans. Logan's work has had a substantial impact on my own training experience, especially on the mental and herbalism ends of the equation, areas that I wouldn't have spent much time engaging with otherwise. One of the low-hanging fruits in both athletic performance and general well-being in daily life is an awareness and understanding of one's breathing patterns. As Logan has said in previous podcasts, “You are always mental training” whether you are aware of it or not, you are also training your breath, whether you are aware of it or not. The question then becomes, how aware of the breathing patterns that you carry are you or your athletes? In today's episode, Logan discusses his approach to breath training for human performance and vitality. He also talks about the inspiration he has drawn from Joseph Greenstein, also known as the Mighty Atom, on the level of breath training, and the Atom's mastery of the mental, inner game in his strongman pursuits. Within this, we discuss the regulation aspects of the body, as it pertains to feats of strength, and the process of working with those regulators in exhibiting feats of strength. We finish the show discussing integrating one's mental and emotional states into physical training means, such as sprinting. Fans of Astro Boy, Buddha and Blackjack will be happy to know that today's episode is all about the manga god that is Osamu Tezuka! After reading his manga biography we talk about the precedent he set for the industry and detail the process of how the artist makes manga. Besides discussing the all-important issue of him being a furry or not. Skip synopsis @ 8:20 Email: WeAppreciateManga@Gmail.com 084: The Osamu Tezuka Story By Toshio Ban and Tezuka Productions Translation by Frederic L. Schott Dr. Osamu Tezuka was born the eldest of three children on November 3rd, 1928. Having grown up in a liberal family he was exposed to cartoons from an early age. His father was an avid photographer who would give him comic books upon returning from his travels in America, as well as let him read Akahon, illustrated children's literature printed with a distinctive red ink. Tezuka was a pioneer due to popularising cartoons as stories “story cartoons”, thus paving the way for the modern manga industry as it stands today. It is why some refer to him as the ‘god of manga'. It was during this post war time and across the world that many cartoonists were looking towards cinema as inspiration for their story telling. Osamu Tezuka himself was a fan of cinema, especially the works of Walt Disney. And by his 30's he would forego his work as a practicing physician entirely and be the highest paid manga artist in Japan. At the age of 35, using his funds acquired from licensing his intellectual property, earning money from radio drama adaptations and by publishing his manga he was also able to pioneer the first televised anime show within Japan. This being an adaptation of his Manga, ‘Astro Boy' otherwise known as ‘Mighty Atom' as well as the first coloured anime show in Japan, ‘Jungle Emperor Leo'. The same studio that produced those shows, Mushi Pro or “Bug Productions”, would challenge their audiences with experimental releases such as the anime movies Belladonna of Sadness, Cleopatra and an adaptation of Arabian Nights before Mushi productions went bankrupt. This however would be just a minor setback in what would be a prolific career, he would continue to make experimental anime and manga throughout the entirety of his life. Having the chance to remake Astro Boy as a coloured TV show and making many successful manga for old and new fans, such as ‘BlackJack', ‘Message to Adolf' and what would be considered his longest running manga and life's work, ‘Phoenix'. Tezuka would die of stomach cancer on February 9th 1989. He was 60 years old. He would leave behind a wife, Etsuko Okada and (according to my sources he had 3 children) Makoto, Rumiko and Chii. As of 2014 Rumiko stated that she unlocked one of her father's draws and found a half-eaten chocolate, an essay praising Katsuhiro Otomo for the work he did on Akira and some drawings of erotic anthropomorphic animals, including a very sexy white mouse. It's fair to say that Rumiko was happy her dad didn't publish those. For further reading you can check out the following website links: The official website of Osamu Tezuka. This weeks guest is Steve Greenstein producer of the Documentary "They Mighty Atom" Known as “The Mighty Atom,” Joseph Greenstein was, indeed, the greatest and perhaps the most unlikely strongman who ever lived. He overcame impossible odds to simply survive to adulthood, then learned to harness the powers of the body - and more importantly, the mind - to achieve the impossible. Stopping an airplane from taking off with his hair, bending cold rolled steel with his hands, biting through nails - Greenstein may have been the inspiration for Superman. An amazing tale of human potential, The Mighty Atom will have audiences cheering. More information on TheMightyAtomDoc.com Rent/buy on Amazon Vimeo

Land's End to John O'Groats is a classic cycle touring route. But it was also the blue riband distance among the long distance record-breaking heyday of the 1930s to the 1960s. In 1954 Eileen Sheridan, a diminutive cyclist from Coventry sponsored by the huge Hercules Bicycle Company, set a new record that stood for decades. Now 89, Eileen recounts a truly epic journey and tells the story of how she became one of the best-known, and best-paid, cyclists in Britain. Continue reading →
In a fortnight, millions of TV viewers will tune in to watch world-class athletes perform acts of great strength and endurance. But a few generations back, at the turn of the last century, long before the Olympic Games became the outsized spectacle that they are today, audiences looking to be entertained by athletic prowess were more likely to find it at the fairgrounds, on a vaudeville stage, or along the boardwalk. That’s where strongmen could be found, pulling trucks with their hair or splitting nails with their teeth. One of the greatest strongmen of all time was one Joseph Greenstein, born Yossele in 1893 in the small Polish town of Suvalk. At a young age, Greenstein ran away to join a Russian circus, then made his way to the Texas oil fields, and finally to Brooklyn, where, as the Mighty Atom, he would earn a place in Ripley’s Believe It or Not and the Guinness Book of World Records for his extraordinary feats (for instance, in 1928, resisting the pull of a plane with a...
