This week, a special road trip episode featuring award-winning Owensboro, Kentucky bluegrass singer/songwriter Rick Faris and his band recorded live at the 2024 Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, Kansas. The annual Walnut Valley Festival, now in it's 53rd season, is one of the oldest and most respected acoustic music festivals in the world. Held at the Winfield, Kansas fairgrounds, more than 30 musical acts will perform on four separate stages, presenting over 200 hours of live music. Also, there is a dedicated contest stage where contestants vie for national and international championships in Finger Style Guitar, Flat Pick Guitar, Bluegrass Banjo, Old Time Fiddle, Mandolin, Mountain Dulcimer, Hammered Dulcimer, and Autoharp. There is a juried arts and crafts fair, exhibits by renowned instrument makers and music shops, family activities, a bevy of food vendors, a farmer's market and even a pub! An unusual aspect of Walnut Valley is its campground tradition. Campsites are not reserved and campers line up to claim a choice campsite during the "Land Rush.” Walnut Valley Festival goers often bring their own musical instruments to participate in the sometimes all night campground jam sessions. Bands like Old Sound and Sally & The Hurts that began as "Jam Bands" in the campgrounds, have even been invited to perform at the festival. Rick Faris is a Kansas Music Hall of Fame Member who was recently awarded the “Songwriter of the Year” at the 2024 International Bluegrass Music Association Awards making him an 8-time IBMA Award winner. In addition Rick won the coveted “New Artist of the Year” in 2022. Faris also spent 11 years with Special Consensus while the band earned two GRAMMY nominations before embarking on his chart topping solo career. The Rick Faris Band, is an International touring Bluegrass outfit playing in the US, Mainland Europe, the British Isles and Canada. They bring sibling harmony and comedic relief with brother JimBob Faris on bass and a youthful snap to their original brand of music with a couple of bluegrass thoroughbreds, Henry Burgess (who grew up with fiddle legend Byron Berline) and Gibson Davis (who is a third generation bluegrass musician following father Chris Davis and his Grandfather Danny Davis). Rick recently moved to Owensboro, Kentucky the Bluegrass Music Capital and has opened his Faris Guitar Co. - https://rickfaris.com/press-kit In this week's “From the Vault” segment, OHR producer Jeff Glover offers a 1988 archival recording of gospel music legends The Chuck Wagon Gang performing the 1934 J.R. Baxter song “After the Sunrise,” from the Ozark Folk Center State Park archives. In his segment “Back in the Hills,” writer, professor and historian Dr. Brooks Blevins explores the storied history of early gospel music publishing in the Ozark and Quachita Mountains.

BB is an incredible banjo player who has played with some incredible mandolin players and has also just released her first solo album called  “Goodtime Revival available here!  Born in the small town of Marton, New Zealand, Catherine "BB" Bowness spent her early years working and living in her family's Fish-and-Chip shop. Although an unlikely origin for a bluegrass banjo player, New Zealand would offer BB her first introduction to the instrument, sparking a lifelong love and fascination. A world away from the heart of bluegrass, BB spent much of her childhood teaching herself the instrument, and through dedication and tenacity became New Zealand School of Music's first banjo student. Inspired by her New Zealand predecessors, The Hamilton County Bluegrass Band, BB was always drawn to the five-piece full band, and after heading to America in 2012 she co-founded her current group, Mile Twelve.  Currently, BB lives in Cambridge, MA. Mile Twelve has won numerous IBMA awards, including 2020 New Artists of the Year and 2017 Momentum Band of the Year. Olivia Dean is our Best New Artist, and I can scarcely believe how right the Grammys got it.In this episode of Queen Things, I'm still sitting with the joy of watching Olivia Dean win—her voice, her ease, her stage presence, and that unmistakable feeling that we're witnessing the start of something truly special. From there, we've got a full pop-culture rundown. I'm talking Grammys performances that delighted me, confused me, and confirmed some long-held suspicions about who gets praised for doing the least.I also reflect on influencer burnout, the identity wobble that comes with your twenties, when cultural commentary starts to feel less funny and more mean-spirited, and why I'm increasingly intentional about where I draw that line. And because things feel heavy right now, I share a few small but meaningful moments that have given me hope lately.Subscribe for monthly bonus episodes:https://www.patreon.com/c/queenthingspodhttps://queenthings.substack.com/Join the conversation:TikTok -@queenthingspod, @iam_kjmillerYouTube - www.youtube.com/@iamkjmillerIG:@kjmillerReferences:Olivia Dean Performing in 2020:https://www.tiktok.com/@barney3000/video/7602310010172984598?_r=1&_t=ZT-93cXKDAsPr3Mikayla's Post:https://www.tiktok.com/@mikaylanogueira/video/7600829055474142477?_r=1&_t=ZT-93cXK3wbe7aReal Housewives of Potomac:https://www.bravotv.com/the-real-housewives-of-potomacAubrielle Smith's TikTok:https://www.tiktok.com/@aubriellesmithh/video/7602106196337626382?_r=1&_t=ZT-93cXI4s4plWProtest at Ohio State:https://ohiocapitaljournal.com/2026/01/22/three-people-arrested-while-protesting-customs-and-border-patrol-recruiters-at-ohio-state-university/The Kelly Clarkson Show's Final Season:https://people.com/the-kelly-clarkson-show-ending-after-seven-seasons-11898089KJ's Top Three Kellyoke Performances:Happier Than Ever:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D8b4cRb6Hl4All By Myself:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ao5DdGmOfzk&list=RDAo5DdGmOfzk&start_radio=17 Rings:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ptTiZpCnREY

The Pinkleton Pull-Aside Podcast

Welcome to the Pinkleton Pull-Aside Podcast. On this podcast, let's step aside from our busy lives to have fun, fascinating life giving conversation with inspiring authors, pastors, sports personalities and other influencers, leaders and followers. Sit back, grab some coffee, or head down the road and let's get the good and the gold from today's guest. Our host is Jeff Pinkleton, Executive Director of the Gathering of the Miami Valley, where their mission is to connect men to men, and men to God. You can reach Jeff at GatheringMV.org or find him on Facebook at The Gathering of the Miami Valley.Aaron Shust's fascination with music—with unique sounds, melodies, progressions, and techniques—has always been a salient part of who he is. From an early age, Aaron has felt most at home in front of a piano. Just as innate to Aaron is his love of God's Word—of wrestling with the Scriptures, with the hard and beautiful things they say, and the way they foretell and fulfill a picture of a suffering servant, King Jesus. You'll hear these twin loves in Shust's music, from his debut success with “My Savior My God,” winning the 2007 New Artist, Songwriter and Song of the Year. Later, as he grappled with a surprise Down Syndrome diagnosis for one son and waged a war with chronic illness for two, he continued to declare “My Hope is in You,” a song which spent 14 weeks at #1, and “Ever Be,” which debuted at #3 on the NCA chart. Over the past several years, Aaron has delved deeply into friendship with Messianic Jews, both in Nashville and Israel, as well as into the Hebrew Scriptures and Jewish tradition that they yield. Shust, a native of Pittsburgh, makes his home in Nashville with his wife Sarah and their sons Daniel, Nick, and Michael, as well as a growing menagerie of pets.

Wyatt Ellis has accomplished more by age 16 than many musicians do in a lifetime. Hailing from the foothills of the Smoky Mountains in East Tennessee, he's quickly emerging as one of bluegrass mu-sic's brightest young stars. With virtuosic mandolin playing, heart-felt vocals, and original songwriting, Wyatt blends the deep tradi-tions of bluegrass with a fresh, youthful energy. Backed by a pow-erhouse band of Appalachia's finest young musicians, Wyatt deliv-ers high-octane performances that range from the Grand Ole Opry to major festivals like MerleFest and Gray Fox. His band's signa-ture single-mic setup showcases their tight harmonies, high-lonesome vocals, and blistering solos, creating a sound steeped in tradition yet driven by the future. Wyatt's breakout year included a debut at the Newport Folk Festival, chart-topping original instru-mentals from his debut album, and becoming one of the youngest regular performers in Grand Ole Opry history. His authentic Appa-lachian songwriting and seasoned stage presence have quickly set him apart as a once-in-a-generation talent with a deep respect for bluegrass music's heritage. 2024's IBMA Momentum Instrumental-ist of the Year and twice nominated for IBMA's New Artist of the Year, Wyatt has collaborated with legends like Peter Rowan, Marty Stuart, and the late Bobby Osborne. His January 2025 release, Winds of Rowan County, a duet with Rowan, celebrated bluegrass roots while symbolically passing the torch. Wyatt's lead and har-mony mandolin solo on Bobby Osborne's final recording of “Rocky Top,” along with their co-written instrumental “Fern Branch,” were both featured on Osborne's posthumous album, a tribute to Wyatt's connection to his hero and mentor. With a debut vocal al-bum of all-new original songs on the way, Wyatt Ellis stands poised at the forefront of bluegrass, honoring the legacy of the genre while boldly pushing it forward into a new era.
