Shinn and her classmate Gwynna Midkiff already are working in the industry, serving paid internships at Industrial Bolting Technologies in Charleston, where they operate computer-numerical-controlled machines similar to those at MAMC. Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia. Today is Saturday, Jan. 18, 2025. West Virginia's giant salamander population serves as a monitor to the Mountain State's water quality…West Virginia Northern Community College receives a federal grant to support manufacturing education…and Weirton residents gear up for the tastiest event of the year: Weirton Restaurant Week…on today's daily304. #1 – From WV EXPLORER – Beneath the surface of clean-flowing streams in West Virginia, a multitude of strange creatures lurk, but none is perhaps more shocking to encounter than the hellbender. Also known as the devil dog, the mud devil, and the Allegheny alligator, its names testify to the strangeness of what turns out to be a giant aquatic salamander. These strange creatures thrive in only the most healthy streams. They are thus indicators of poor water quality, a concern in parts of West Virginia where the hellbender lives. Due to the impact of disease and habitat loss, the animal is listed as a vulnerable species though groups like the New River Conservancy. The conservancy is urging people in the New River watershed and beyond to comment on a proposal by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to designate it as endangered. “Not only does the presence of hellbenders indicate the rivers we rely on for drinking water are clean,” says Andrew Downs, executive director of the conservancy, “but this sometimes-strange-looking and beautiful creature is part of the identity of our region. WVNCC is one of only 18 institutions nationwide, and the only recipient in West Virginia, to receive this funding. The program is a next-generation, industry-aligned skills pathway designed to support the revitalized manufacturing and production industries in West Virginia's Northern Panhandle. This initiative aims to build workforce education and training capacity in the Ohio River Valley region, focusing on sustainable and scalable change to prepare students for careers in advanced manufacturing and next generation energy. Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia. Today is Monday, Jan. 6, 2025. Weirton's Theo Yianni's serves up bangin' good Greek food…a new initiative aims to attract economic investment to historic buildings in rural communities…and Wheeling's Streetscape beautifies the city and creates a foundation for future investments…on today's daily304. #1 – From WV LIVING – Shawn Mihellis may tell you it was never his plan to own a popular Greek restaurant in Weirton, but the winding road that led him there seems to suggest otherwise. One: His parents came to America by boat, making Mihellis the first in his family to be born in this country. Two: They eventually migrated to Weirton, a town in the Northern Panhandle with a large Greek population. Three: Back in his younger days, he ran an after-hours bar in his basement where he'd make and serve his own Greek gyros. He went to college to pursue a teaching degree, but the restaurant business called him back. He went on to open Theo Yianni's, a little Greek restaurant in the middle of town, 13 years ago—and that small spot quickly became a hit among the locals. Read more: https://wvliving.com/bangin-good-food/ #2 – From WV EXPLORER – An initiative designed to attract economic investment to historic buildings and districts in rural communities is being introduced to Congress by senators Mark Warner of Virginia and Shelley Moore Capito of West Virginia. The Rural Historic Tax Credit Improvement Act will significantly reduce financial burdens for rural homeowners and developers in historic districts and where buildings are otherwise listed on the national register. Capito said the act will help rural communities that otherwise must compete with high-traffic development areas. As early as the 1940s, many towns across America began losing commerce to larger cities along major transportation routes. Read more: https://wvexplorer.com/2024/12/20/west-virginia-tax-credit-benefit-rural-commmunities/ #3 – From WV EXECUTIVE – In 2022, Governor Jim Justice approved the bid award of $31.9 million for the Wheeling Streetscape Project. This project, scheduled to be completed by summer 2025, will beautify downtown Wheeling by adding decorative traffic signals, plants and trees as well as brickwork along Main and Market streets and between 10th and 16th streets. ADA-compliant curb cuts and widened sidewalks are also part of the project. Josh Jefferson, president and CEO of the Regional Economic Development Partnership, says the project has created a foundation for future investment and supports the city's existing business community. In recent years, Wheeling and its surrounding cities have seen new businesses arise, such as Form Energy, Newbridge Academy for Kids, Waterfront Hall and Bridge Tavern & Grill. Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia. Today is Monday, Dec. 23, 2024. Ever wonder how the Northern Panhandle got its shape? Like the state itself, it came about as the result of a contentious dispute…a Monroe County farm is the winner of the Pitch Southern WV Business Idea Competition…and 26 small business owners graduate from a Goldman Sachs program at Bridge Valley CTC…on today's daily304. #1 – From WV EXPLORER – You've probably heard of the Mason-Dixon Line, but what about the Ellicot Line? West Virginia's remarkable shape is partly defined by its odd Northern Panhandle, a finger of land that extends northward more than 60 miles from its central mass. Home to Wheeling, the state's first capital, the panhandle's origins date back to the 1700s and a contentious boundary dispute between Virginia and Pennsylvania that helped shape the history of the U.S. According to Weirton-based historian Paul Zuros, both colonies issued land grants before the American Revolution and sent soldiers and frontiersmen to settle the same land. The dispute eventually became so aggressive that the Continental Congress was forced to step in. The competition was coordinated by the West Virginia Hive Network. Their farm-to-table business, which offers fresh lamb, chicken and duck eggs, and produce, took home the first-place prize of $2,500. Their winnings will be used to purchase mobile electric coolers that will allow their meat, eggs and produce to be offered to customers in a wider geographic region. The early positive customer interest in Waymaker's Meadows Farm has the Millers taking steps for expansion. They are now leasing an additional 90 acres of land and have added more farm animals. Goldman Sachs graduated 26 small business owners from its signature business-education program, 10,000 Small Businesses, at BridgeValley Community & Technical College earlier this month. The commencement is part of the programs' $100 million Investment in Rural Communities grant, an initiative to reach rural small business owners across 20 states over five years. West Virginia marks the seventh state to host graduates from the program to date after it was launched last year. Goldman Sachs Foundation President Asahi Pompey compared the program to a “mini MBA,” in that it's set up to expand business owners' business-education knowledge and growth. According to archaeologist Darla Spencer, author of Woodland Mounds of West Virginia, more than 400 mounds have been recorded in West Virginia, and their presence was once so extensive that explorers couldn't believe they were of Native American origin. Scholars long ago proved that indigenous peoples had raised the mounds. Today you can still find ancient mounds in South Charleston and Dunbar in the Kanawha Valley. A professor of Native American studies at West Virginia University, Spencer examined the Grave Creek Mound in Moundsville, and 16 other mounds and mound groups of mounds in West Virginia in her book. Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia. Today is Monday, Aug. 12, 2024. Fall brings cooler weather, making it the perfect time to cast a line in WV's streams and rivers…Touchstone Research Laboratory aims to create 1,000 new tech jobs in northern WV…and Clendenin Brewing Company's new owners are loving their new home in Almost Heaven…on today's daily304. #1 – From WV STATE PARKS – Whether you're a seasoned angler trying to become the next Master Angler or new to fishing, fall is a great time to cast a line in West Virginia. Cooler temperatures and beautiful fall foliage create an ideal setting for a relaxing day on the water. Additionally, several hunting seasons open during the fall, which provides a unique opportunity for hunters and anglers to harvest game in the morning and fish in the afternoon or evening. But one of the biggest benefits of fishing in the fall is that fish are also more likely to bite. As the water temperature drops, fish go on a feeding binge as they prepare for dormant, frigid winter months. Check out wvdnr.com to view top fall fishing spots and view an interactive fishing map. You can also purchase your fishing license online. Read more: https://wvdnr.gov/top-wv-lakes-and-streams-for-fall-fishing-adventures/ #2 – From THE INTELLIGENCER – Touchstone Research Laboratory has a goal to create 1,000 technical jobs in the Northern Panhandle by creating new products and spinning them off into their own companies. Two examples of Touchstone creations are C-FOAM and Touchstone Advanced Composites, both purchased by Consol Energy for use in the aviation industry and Touchstone still holds on to its operations that produce MetPreg, billed as the world's strongest aluminum and created for the U.S. Navy to repair cracks in naval vessels. Meanwhile, Touchstone's research and development lab is growing and expanding, according to CEO Brian Joseph. The original building on the campus where C-FOAM was invented now has been demolished to make way for a larger machine shop building. “We often think we have to go to certain places to do certain things, and I am of the view growing in recent years that that is just not important,” he said. “What is important is getting to scale on the number of tech jobs you have, because it will build upon itself.” Read more: https://www.theintelligencer.net/news/top-headlines/2024/07/touchstone-research-lab-in-ohio-county-spinning-off-into-the-future/?es_id=c6ff8ccb27 #3 – From GAZETTE-MAIL – A Cincinnati engineer and a nurse walk into a Clendenin brewery -- and two years later, they wind up owning the place! That's not the setup to a joke but rather the true story of husband and wife team Evan and Becky Harding, the new owners of Clendenin Brewing Company. The couple came to the area two years ago for the Chili'N on the Elk Chili Cook-Off and Wine and Beer Festival and quickly fell in love with the brewery and the area. That prompted them to leave their high-stress jobs in the big city for the quiet countryside and small-town vibe of West Virginia. The Hardings say they've received a lot of support from previous owners Matt and Nikki Holbert in seeing that the brewing company they founded undergoes a smooth transition. The Martinsburg shop is owned and operated by a father and son team who are passionate about the craft of cutting and styling hair. Owner Austin Hale, a third generation barber, believes the barber shop is more than just a place to get a haircut. It's a time honored American tradition and should serve as a pillar for the community. However, traditions don't survive through the generations without people who care about passing them on. To pass along the business of barbering to his children, Hale found that he needed more than just passion – he needed funding. Hale connected with the West Virginia Small Business Development Center and WV SBDC Business Coach Michael Boyd, who helped him create a business plan and find a lender. “Because of the SBDC we are able to keep barbing in our family for a third generation with me and will hopefully continue on with a fourth generation with my kids,” Hale said. Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia. Today is Wednesday, April 3, 2024. As spring hibernations come to an end, the WVDNR reminds West Virginians to be “bear aware.” Plan an overnight stay in the Northern Panhandle and choose from campgrounds, resorts, or even the grounds of a castle. And learn about WV's historic landmarks…on today's daily304. #1 – From WV EXPLORER – When spring is in the air in West Virginia, black bears come out of hibernation and begin a desperate search for food. Because bears become more active during this time of year, the chances of an outdoor encounter increase, says Colin Carpenter, black bear project leader for the W.Va. Division of Natural Resources. Do not ever feed bears. It's a violation of state law. You also want to avoid inadvertently feeding them. Remove or secure food attractants such as unsecured trash cans and pet food bowls before a bear finds them. If you encounter a black bear, the WVDNR offers these dos and don'ts: Remain calm. Don't approach a bear. Don't run from a bear. Don't climb trees to escape a bear. Give the bear a clear escape route. Quietly back away and leave the area. If attacked, immediately fight back. Remember, it benefits both wildlife and humans to always be bear aware! Of these landmarks, 16 of them are right here in West Virginia. How many West Virginia sites have you visited? Here are just a few: Matewan Historic District, site of the bloody West Virginia mine wars that occurred in 1920 in Mingo County. In Ohio County, the Wheeling Suspension Bridge, built in 1849, was the first suspension bridge of its kind when it was built, and to this day is the oldest suspension bridge still in use. Just north of Huntington lies the Clover site, once home to a large Native American village that dates back to the Protohistoric period between 1550 and 1600 A.D. The next day many of the workers showed up at Mr. Remines' door. He didn't have the work for them at the time, but he had just done a deal with the West Virginia Economic Development Authority, so he had the equipment for them to work on. He was able to hire 44 of them on the spot. In 2003, the company started with a small gear shop and, since then, have expanded the size and scope of their work in Brushfork, Mercer County. Among other things, they have a welding shop, a mechanical division doing gearbox repairs, and they do complete equipment rebuilds. “They were there at every turn,” Remines said of the WVEDA. “They can see the return on investment, and they can see the job growth… Going from five jobs to 100 jobs, and I gotta say the Economic Development Authority played a huge part in financing and allowing me to do that.” Read more: https://eda.wv.gov/maxxim-manufacturing/ Find these stories and more at wv.gov/daily304. Originally from New York City, Hopen found beauty, inspiration, and economic freedom in the Mountain State. “In West Virginia, I found all these beautiful hardwoods available in the forest,” Hopen says. “I had chainsaws and chisels, and I began carving.” With some local attention on his work, residents suggested he teach lessons. Soon thereafter, he became an artist in residence in Clarksburg, where he worked for two years. He began creating small commissioned pieces—then the Clarksburg Historical Society brought him his first large commission: a piece on immigrants for the courthouse plaza. Then he got a call requesting a bronze statue of St. Francis de Assisi for a hospital in Charleston. Hopen's work can be found all throughout the Mountain State, including a stone carving on the Davis & Elkins College campus, a marble Mother's Day memorial in Grafton, a bronze Senator Robert C. Byrd statue in the West Virginia State Capitol, and a bronze Hawks Nest Tunnel Disaster memorial piece at Tamarack. Known widely as the “Vagabond Chef” and frequently seen on a motorcycle as he travels the state in search of native-food experiences, Matt Welsch has been enlisted to re-imagine the menus at West Virginia parks. Welsch's passion for culinary artistry and commitment to West Virginia's rich flavors have made him a prominent figure in the industry. Born and raised in Marshall County, he developed wanderlust early, leading him to travel globally. In 2014, he returned to his native West Virginia to found the Vagabond Kitchen, his Wheeling-based restaurant. “Chef Matt's unparalleled talent and engaging personality align perfectly with our vision to elevate the dining experiences in our state parks," Deputy-Chief of Parks Paul Redford.said. “I believe his contributions will undoubtedly add an extra sparkle to our restaurants.” Read more: https://wvexplorer.com/2023/08/30/west-virginia-state-park-restaurants-matt-welsch-vagabond-chef/ #2 – From GAZETTE-MAIL – With blade-like Tuscarora sandstone cliffs jutting 900 feet into the Pendleton County sky, the Monongahela National Forest's Seneca Rocks has long prompted visitors to look up while spending time at the iconic West Virginia landmark. But this summer, the U.S. Forest Service has given visitors a good reason to look down — and become fully immersed in the experience. Seneca Rocks Discovery Center has been hosting free snorkeling sessions in the North Fork of the Potomac River's South Branch, which flows past the base of the site's namesake. The program is designed to help participants get a more in-depth understanding of the importance of clean water and healthy streams as they get close-up views of fish, crawfish, and other forms of aquatic life. Mary Ann Nash and her sister Janet Donnelly said they wanted to try it out after having been snorkeling on their Alaskan cruise. “We saw more fish here and we loved seeing how the rock formation looked underwater,” Nash said. Today is Monday, Aug. 14 Marshall University President Brad Smith shares how you can support small businesses…Plan a camping adventure in Almost Heaven… and Wheeling's Victorian architecture sets the stage for a new movie…on today's daily304. #1 – From BRAD SMITH – The Mountain State boasts 113,000 small businesses. These organizations represent 98% of the state's businesses and employ 49.1% of West Virginian workers. With so much economic impact being driven by local businesses, it's important that West Virginia entrepreneurs are uplifted in their ideas and dreams to drive the local and regional economy forward. Recognizing a need to further bolster the entrepreneurial interests of West Virginians, numerous organizations supporting small business ventures have been established across the state. For example, Alys and Brad D. Smith's Wing 2 Wing Foundation supports a number of projects – providing coaching and resources to startups and small businesses in West Virginia. Smith also leverages his role as Marshall University's President and dedicated alum to bolster the Mountain State. Prior to his formal role at the university, he assisted in creating the Brad D. Smith Student Incubator, which assists budding entrepreneurs with turning their startup dreams into reality. But a person doesn't have to own a nonprofit organization or be a public figure to make a difference and support local businesses. In addition to shopping small, follow and share local businesses on social media. Leave positive online reviews. Sign up for outreach texts or emails. And buy gift cards to encourage others to try them. Read more: https://braddsmith.com/blog/supporting-small-businesses-in-west-virginia/ #2 – From WV TOURISM – West Virginia is known for its stunning natural features and variety of unique terrains, but is also full of opportunities for memorable stays while exploring all the Mountain State has to offer. Years later, the partner reunites with Delevigne's character when he moves to Pittsburgh, with the two slowly falling in love while confronting the shared violent history between them. “The Gun on Second Street” will span a variety of eras, making the Victorian houses in East Wheeling an important asset for the crew while shooting flashback scenes from the 1970s. Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia. Today is Sunday, June 25 Tudor's Biscuit World remains a staple of Appalachian cuisine and beyond…Make your fall plans now! The 2023 dates for Gauley Season have been released. WV's richest man, Marshall University President Brad D. Smith reflects on giving back to his home state…on today's daily304. #1 – From WV EXPLORER – Known for its made-from-scratch biscuit sandwiches, Tudor's Biscuit World has been a staple of Appalachian cuisine since it first opened and is one of the only fast-food chains of its size to originate in West Virginia. Elizabeth Epling, the marketing director for Tudor's, shared some facts about the growing chain, including that, in total, Tudor's has 74 locations, with its 75th opening soon in Inwood, West Virginia, spanning from the Northern Panhandle to the most southern part of the Mountain State. John Tudor, the son of founders Bill and Mae Tudor, operates most of the Huntington locations, and his son, Pat, owns a location in Lexington, Kentucky. And have you ever wondered about the names of the biscuits? Many of them are named after regular customers of the original Tudor's Biscuit World, including the Ron, Dottie, and Tootie. “When someone comes in every day, you tend to get to know that person on a first-name basis, so after a while, when Ron would come in every day for his sausage, egg, and cheese biscuit, it became second nature for the person working at the counter to say, ‘Give me a Ron' rather than a sausage, egg, and cheese,” Epling says. His cousins rushed to aid their dying neighbors as volunteer firefighters. “I watched the flames burn outside my window,” Smith remembers. “And then I watched this community rise from the ashes.” Smith decided to take the country roads back home to West Virginia, the place he belongs—and into the President's House at Marshall, his alma mater, which he took over in January 2022. He brought back with him a sizable fortune, accumulated over nearly four decades in business. According to Forbes' ranking of the richest person in each state, he's West Virginia's wealthiest resident, worth $700 million. Paisley, a native of Glen Dale in the Northern Panhandle, spent last week at several sites in Fayette and Raleigh counties, including the Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine, where he recorded a music video inside the mine. It was the first time anyone on his crew, including Paisley, who also brought his father, had been inside a West Virginia coal mine. “It's so gratifying to see that happen more and more, that people are so interested in what we do,” said Leslie Baker, director of Beckley Parks and Recreation. “They are open to the new information that they're going to receive because we truly find out, just like with Brad, who's a native son, had never been underground before. Did not know what to expect and then, when the miners talked to him, was just awestruck by the effort that West Virginia miners and other Appalachian miners have made over the years to the prosperity of this country.” Paisley's new album, “Sons of the Mountains,” is due out later this year. The late 1800s signified the beginning to a significant chapter of growth for the Northern Panhandle city, Elliott said, adding that more buildings were built between 1890 and 1910 in Wheeling that probably any other era, Dozens of private and public projects are under construction, are about to begin, or have recently been completed. Projects include the long-awaited $32 million Downtown Streetscape Project, the $17 million rehabilitation of the historic Wheeling Suspension Bridge. Additional projects include the rehabilitation of four historic buildings in the 1400 block of Market Street. Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia. Today is Tuesday, Feb. 21 Residents of Thomas and Davis share how the mountain towns reinvented themselves into an outdoor recreation hub…from a bundle of inner tubes lashed together to a world-class resort, Adventures on the Gorge traces its origins back to some whitewater rafting hippies…and put a lid on it! That jar you're opening might be capped off with a product made in Glen Dale--#YesWV…on today's daily304. #1 – From BROOKINGS – In this episode of “Reimagine Rural,” podcast host Tony Pipa visits the neighboring towns of Thomas and Davis, former resource-dependent economies that have reinvented themselves as destinations for art and outdoor recreation. Tony speaks with long-time residents who saw the community's decline, and newcomers who helped spur its revitalization. They describe the new challenges that come with economic growth and their hopes for community-focused sustainable development in the future. Listen to the podcast: https://www.brookings.edu/podcast-episode/protecting-community-integrity-during-a-creative-transformation-in-west-virginia/ #2 – From WV EXPLORER – Today it's one of the world's first and largest outdoor adventure resorts, but Adventures on the Gorge can trace its roots back 50 years to the earliest days of whitewater rafting in the New River Gorge. In the spring of 1969, Paul Breuer and some friends rafted the New River on a set of inner tubes topped with a wood rowing frame. After numerous trips on the river, Breuer launched Mountain River Tours in 1973. It was one of the first companies to offer rafting trips on the New and Gauley rivers. As whitewater rafting increased in popularity, more outfitters popped up in the region and waged a friendly competition as they courted guests with lodging, dining, and additional outdoor adventures. In 2007, a group of investors with a passion for whitewater rafting and a vision for expanding tourism in the New River region brought together three of the region's top outfitters—Class VI, The Rivermen, and Mountain River Tours. The investors also acquired the outfitters' assets, including rafting equipment, cabins, retail facilities, and restaurants…and Adventures on the Gorge was born. Johnny O's voice has echoed through the Upper Ohio Valley (Southeastern Ohio, Northern Panhandle of WV, & Southwestern PA) for decades! You would be hard pressed to find someone that HASN'T heard of Johnny O. He's one of the rare breeds that did the radio DJing AND the mobile DJing. He and I worked together in 2005 when I was first hired for my first full-time gig at 100.5 WOMP-FM. Stuff that he taught me then stuck with me all the way through my career. In this episode, I learned a lot of stuff that I didn't already know... and some old classics like his Kenny G story. The Brooke High School kids (Brooke County is in the Northern Panhandle of West Virginia near Wheeling), have been wrongly - WAY WRONGLY - accused of being racists, all because of a simple “Trump Perry” sign at a football game. The story went viral, so now, everyone in America thinks that Brooke kids are bigots, mostly because of the craven response by the superintendent and the Brooke County school board apologizing profusely for this supposed racist sign. We need to organize to end political correctness on high school campuses. Let the campaign start in Wellsburg, West Virginia, at 29 Bruin Drive (Brooke High School)!!!!!!
George Howard Brett (born May 15, 1953 in Glen Dale, West Virginia), a third baseman, was the youngest of four sons of a sports-minded family which included his oldest brother Ken, a major-league pitcher who had pitched in the World Series in 1967 at 19 years old. Brothers John and Bobby had brief careers in the minor leagues. Although George was born in the Northern Panhandle of West Virginia, the Brett family moved to the Midwest and later to El Segundo, a suburb of Los Angeles, just south of Los Angeles International Airport. George grew up hoping to follow in the footsteps of his three older brothers. He graduated from El Segundo High School in 1971 and was drafted by the Kansas City Royals in the second round (29th overall) of the 1971 baseball draft. His high school teammate was pitcher Scott McGregor. His 3,154 career hits are the most by any third baseman in major league history, and 15th all-time. Baseball historian Bill James regards him as the second-best third baseman of all time, trailing only his contemporary, Mike Schmidt. Brett was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1999, with what was then the fourth-highest voting percentage in baseball history (98.2%), trailing only Tom Seaver, Nolan Ryan, and Ty Cobb. In 2007, Cal Ripken Jr. passed Brett with 98.5% of the vote. His voting percentage was higher than all-time outfielders Babe Ruth, Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Stan Musial, Ted Williams, and Joe DiMaggio. That same year, he ranked Number 55 on The Sporting News' list of the 100 Greatest Baseball Players, and was nominated as a finalist for the Major League Baseball All-Century Team. Brett is one of four players in MLB history to accumulate 3,000 hits, 300 home runs, and a career .300 batting average (the others are Stan Musial, Willie Mays, and Hank Aaron). Most indicative of his hitting style, Brett is sixth on the career doubles list, with 665 (trailing Tris Speaker, Pete Rose, Stan Musial, Ty Cobb, and Craig Biggio). Combining his superior hitting
