Singer-songwriter Weyes Blood is one of the most inventive musicians working today. One year ago, she released her prescient album And in the Darkness, Hearts Aglow. On the heels of her whirlwind tour (4:00), she joins us this week to talk about her post-pandemic anthem “It's Not Just Me, It's Everybody” (10:04), her religious upbringing (13:22), the formative punk shows she attended as a teenager (20:17), and the influence of artists like Nico and Sonic Youth (25:18). On the back-half, Natalie reflects on her nomadic young adulthood (31:00), how she forged her path in the music industry (33:42), the apocalyptic feelings embedded in her album Titanic Rising (42:29), the inspiration of director Stanley Kubrick (49:32), and why she still holds onto hope through these turbulent times (57:50).See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

As broadcast September 19, 2022 with plenty of new vibes for the time off. Tonight we mark 52 years yesterday since Jimi Hendrix passed away. An artist that rose and fell in seemingly the blink of an eye, few artists can hold the torch to his four years in the music business, and his debut is still one of the most earth-shatteringly successful that the music world has ever seen. After that, there is a bevvy of new albums ready to drop in the coming weeks, with this Friday being a huge day of releases, but last Friday was no slouch. New albums to feature from The Beths, Djo, Danielle Ponder, and Whitney to highlight the first hour along with black midi coming to Seoul for the first time on December 2 to close the first half. New pop out this weekend featured some serious slaps, chief amongst them BLACKPINK's atom smasher of a new album Born Pink that made history over the weekend on Spotify. We finished in part four with new and recent Korean indie cuts, mostly standalones, with our tune of the week being from SOLE's incredible new album imagine club, which also just dropped Friday amongst the ruckus.#feelthegravityTracklist (st:rt)Part I (00:00)Jimi Hendrix – I Don't Live TodayThe Beths – When You Know You KnowDry Cleaning – Gary AshbyJAWNY – adiosWhitney – LOST CONTROLAlex Siegel – Fairweather Friends Part II (30:33)Weyes Blood – It's Not Just Me, It's EverybodyDjo – End of BeginningNick Hakim – VertigoDEHD – EggshellsDanielle Ponder – Someone Like YouBlackmidi – Sugar/TzuBlackmidi – Dangerous Liaisons Part III (62:31)BLACKPINK – Shut DownJessie Reyez – ONLY ONEWizkid – Bad to MeFeid – ProhibidoxNoah Cyrus – I Just Want A LoverCharlie Puth – I Don't Think That I Like HerRina Sawayama – Hurricanes Part IV (92:34)Choi Yuree – ForestYU YEON WOO – diversSOSEOM – The Regret of YesterdayWitches – Whenever I Fall AsleepSOLE – ore oresucozy feat subin – EmptyLevan – You're Beautiful

Melbourne duo Not Just Me return to Thick As Thieves for ‘Through The Blinds', accompanied by Audiojack on remix duties. Longstanding members of Australia's music scene, Brian Fantana & Ben Silver's Not Just Me project saw the two DJs and producers combine under one guise last year to reveal their debut single, ‘Syren'. Combining percussive grooves and snaking basslines with haunting piano riffs, ‘Through The Blinds' welcomes an impactful cut that can shift the energy of any room or festival in an instant, while Audiojack's take sees the Gruuv head honchos and Crosstown Rebels regulars up the pace to deliver a soaring interpretation perfect for the peak hour.

Monkey Safari deliver the third release on Thick As Thieves' newly-minted imprint as they drop their ‘Fix Your Life' EP to close June. Featuring as one of melodic house and techno's favourite duos, German pairing Monkey Safari continue to showcase their studio prowess as they explore the corners and nuances of the genre via releases on the Anjunadeep, Bedrock, Get Physical, and their own Hommage imprint. And while the DJs, producers, and label bosses continue to impress with a wealth of original material, their next project welcomes a fresh track under their DJ Island ‘collaborative guise', having unveiled the alias on home turf for the disco-fuelled single, ‘Sometimes'. Hot on its heels, June welcomes a debut appearance on Thick As Thieves' newly launched label, having toured with the Melbourne mainstays years, as they follow material from Super Flu, The Journey, and Not Just Me to deliver their ‘Fix Your Life' EP. A sun-soaked anthem guided by resonant piano melodies, infectious soulful vocals, and slinking hats, ‘Fix Your Life' welcomes a bright, feel-good slice of house music. To contrast, the warping ‘Pills' dives down a late night, funkinfused wormhole as acid leads meet skittering drums and bumping bass licks to round out proceedings in style.

‘Syren’ is the debut release from Melbourne DJ/Producer pairing Brian Fantana and Ben Silver (Silversix) for their new underground club music project ‘NOT JUST ME’. Crafted, refined and tested at Melbourne’s notorious late-night institutions, ‘Syren’ is a dance-floor weapon that pulls you down an aural rabbit hole. Hypnotic, deep and dirty, the looping bassline riff modulates into an acid journey. The crisp drums keep you locked in, while original detuned vocals scatter the stereo spectrum, shifting you toward a lucid dream-like state. Brian Fantana and Ben Silver as 'NOT JUST ME', are accomplished DJs and Producers of the Australian dance music circuit. Together they combine years of dance-floor knowledge, studio wizardry and acumen. ‘NOT JUST ME’ plan to make their mark by releasing a barrage of underground dance floor cuts throughout 2021, and if ‘Syren’ is anything to go by, dance-floors are in for a treat.

Leading Australian touring brand Thick As Thieves launch new in-house label as they welcome German duo Super Flu to deliver their ‘Pancham’ EP, accompanied by a remix from rising Australian pairing The Journey. An influential name down under for the last decade, Melbourne-based event favourites Thick As Thieves continue to lead the way when it comes to the curation of international and local talent within the Australian house and techno scene. Featuring as the country’s premier touring company, bringing names such as Patrick Topping, Claptone, Andhim, ANNA, Rebüke, and Mathew Jonson to name just a few to Australian soil over the past few years, April sees a new string added to the brand’s bow as they launch their new self-titled in-house imprint, continuing their ethos of ‘Raising The Vibration’. “There’s such creative talent out there pushing the boundaries of sound, and some are bound to get my attention. There needed to be an outlet to introduce those sounds and warm up a few ears prior to taking on these artists at tour level. It’s always a bonus when the dancefloor erupts, and an artist is playing their own track or remix. Sometimes it’s the difference between an average gig and a gig that’s etched into the memory. Here’s a chance for the Thick As Thieves crew to give these artists our best shot at raising the vibration all round.” - Mike Toner, Thick As Thieves Developed naturally across the past ten years, the label will bring tracks discovered on the dancefloor to a global audience and serve as a home for fresh music from leading international names including Monkey Safari alongside exciting, rising Australian talent such as Not Just Me. Kicking things off, 9th April welcomes the label’s debut release courtesy of leading German duo Super Flu, who step up to deliver their entrancing ‘Pancham’ EP following music via the likes of Dynamic, Crosstown Rebels, and Moon Harbour, backed by a remix from emerging Melbourne-based duo, The Journey. Title cut ‘Pancham’ showcases the German pairing at their best, combining crisp organic percussion with wavering synths, eerie eastern-influenced melodies and rolling grooves, whilst ‘Nicotine’ weaves off-kilter leads atop of wandering stabs, sharp drum licks and snaking low-ends to showcase two original cuts packed full of quality. Rounding out proceedings, rising Melbourne pairing Jacob Malmo and Tom Evans, aka The Journey, up the energy and introduce pulsating bass patterns, vocal chants and hair-raising builds throughout their interpretation of ‘Nicotine’ - shaping up a slick label debut from one of Australia’s most important players within the house and techno landscape. Super Flu ‘Pancham’ EP drops via Thick As Thieves on 9th April 2021.

Original Broadcast: August 2008 Monthly Theme: Gospel in Country Music Country Song: "Me and God" by Josh Turner [Jesus said:] “For where two or three are gathered in My name, there am I among them.” (Matthew 18:20) Not Just Me and God The greatest asset of American civil religion is its individualistic nature. The greatest problem with American civil religion is its individualistic nature. Every American enjoys his or her freedoms. Unfortunately, this idea of political freedom also crosses into the Church. Many people—including people at Trinity—believe that they’re free to come to church or not on Sunday morning. They’ve bought into the American civil religion creed of “It’s me and God.” Josh Turner’s song, “Me and God,” summarizes it very succinctly in the final lines: “We’re a team … me and God.” Jesus Himself says differently. He says, “Where two or three are gathered in My name…” Church doesn’t happen with just one person. Church was based on Christian fellowship. The one thing we need most in our Christian lives is interaction with other Christians in and around God’s Word. It’s not just you and God. And you’re not a team. As a Christian, you are a slave of Jesus Christ—just as Paul identified himself in his epistles. What’s your view of God? Is He your best friend or is He the Creator of the universe that you bow before and vow to give up your very life if He asked you? Ponder that question today. Amen.

The 48 Hour Challenge is back! We gathered show topic suggestions from our audience, threw them into a word randomizer, and ended up with “self-acceptance”. From there, our challenge was to research, write, and record a brand new episode in 48 hours straight (including sleep). Did we do it? Well, give it a listen and find out. Along the way we talk to clinical psychologist Dr. Lisa Firestone and author & speaker Lisa Jakub. Both of whom help us to understand why self-acceptance can be challenging, what the rewards of doing the work are, and most importantly what are some tangible things you can put in practice today to get back to a life of more self-acceptance and less critical self-consciousness. Lisa Jakub is one of those people that we all look at and say, “She’s got it all figured out,” even though she would argue that fact. Her journey of self-discovery truly began after she decided to leave the Hollywood spotlight where she starred in such movies as Mrs. Doubtfire and Independence Day to focus on who she is and what she wants. Now, after discovering her true passion as a writer, she has released two books. The first, You Look Like That Girl: A Child Actor Stops Pretending and Finally Grows Up which covers her life as an actress and her decision to leave that life behind, and her second, Not Just Me: Anxiety, Depression, and Learning to Embrace Your Weird in which she welcomes us to explore intimate details of her heart and mind to help better understand those who deal with anxiety, depression and all the taboos that surround the subject. We also discuss the events of Charlottesville, Virginia where she has lived with her husband for 16 years and was front and centre during the recent terror that occurred there. While her story continues to unfold, she finds solace in being open and honest about who she is and expressing that unapologetically. While she is a multi talented person, her greatest gift is the unconditional love she sends out to the world through her work and life well lived. Where There’s Smoke is coming back in September for their Fourth Season! In this episode you will hear all the details - launch date, frequency, etc. But first, Brett and Nick seem to have slightly different views on how exactly to launch this new season. It is not a problem unique to them. Often we can find ourselves struggling in decisions and bouncing between what we want to do and what others want us to do. And then, even when we think we are clear, we are concerned about what others might think of our choice. In those moments, what is the best advice? Does it vary? Do we listen to ourselves, others, or just follow the lead of ‘90s Television Producers? In this Summer (almost) Spectacular episode, we explore those questions, and much more!
