FLAT CHAT

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 31, 2020 37:57

In this week’s extra-long Flat Chat Wrap, obsession with coronavirus is spreading like, well, a virus.  Jimmy and Sue discuss how it may be having a crippling effect on that other viral sensation from recent years … Airbnb. Not only are their potential guests staying home, whether or not they want to, there was the decision by Airbnb head office to waive all cancellation fees, plus NSW hosts are about to be hit with another blow … new laws coming in next week mean unit owners will be able to pass by-laws banning short-term holiday lets from their blocks. With many holiday letting hosts virtually dumping their properties on to the residential let market, that’s a lot of prime apartments and houses coming up for knock-down rents – well, compared to what they were getting from tourist. So there will be a lot of choice for renters, not least the decision of whether to go for long leases – in case the tourists come flooding back in Spring and they get turfed out to make way – or to gamble on there being even more uncertainty and disruption down the line when their flexibility will be at a premium. Jimmy and Sue discuss which are the best options. With many apartment gyms and pools being closed due to the coronavirus threat –  rather than being managed properly to avoid breaching the social distancing regulations, residents are having to fall back on their own resources.  J&S recommend the Centr fitness videos promoted by actor Chris Hemsworth with six weeks free membership. If that sounds too much like hard work, try the Seven-minute Body Weight workout – aka the “hotel workout” which you can do in your own home without any additional equipment.  There’s an excellent example here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jru5B044HOs You can load versions of that on to your phone so you can take it with you (if you were allowed to go anywhere.)  By the way, Jimmy has heard that Fair Trading is about to issue guidelines that suggest the cautious committees who shut our strata gyms down may have gone too far. Meanwhile, you can do what J&S did which was to dig out all their old unused exercise gear – and there’s a lot of it – plus buy a couple of weights from a sports shop (if you can get them, Jimmy says they’re selling like toilet paper) then find an online workout that suits you. And if just the thought of exercise is stressing you out even more than fear of Covid-19, Sue recommends this article in The Conversation about enjoying the simple pleasures of life. And for Sue they include this hilarious video about a man who thinks he’s receiving a Skype call: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o0VHQj-6lBA. And finally, a song about what we do – or plan to do – during our coronavirus-enforced isolation, purloined from this BBC Sounds podcast of The Now Show. Listen to the podcast here

And he hinted at a change on our programme a few weeks ago - but Grant Shapps has revealed measures to ban pavement parking in England. The actress and comedian Jess Robinson tells Michael Berkeley how her training as a classical singer informs her impressions of a vast range of singers, including Kate Bush, Bjork, Lady Gaga, Billie Holiday and Julie Andrews. A regular on Radio 4’s The Now Show, Dead Ringers, and 15 Minute Musicals, Jess made her name starring on stage in Little Voice and playing Joan Collins’ daughter in Full Circle. Her musical impressions propelled her to the semi finals of Britain’s Got Talent in 2017 and she’s currently on tour with her show No Filter. Jess chooses songs by Samuel Barber and Debussy that were favourites from her classical singing lessons, and pieces that remind her of the rich musical heritage of her family, including a 20th-century organ prelude that she plays in her local church as a double act with her mother – her mother plays the keyboards but Jess plays the pedals, as her mother’s legs are too short to reach them! And we hear Jess’s grandmother singing a traditional Yiddish song, recorded after she arrived in Britain on one of the very last Kindertransports in 1939. The comedian Rachel Parris talks to Michael Berkeley about her musical passions and how her life as a classical musician led to her career in comedy. Her hugely versatile career includes improvised comedy shows, stand-up, musical comedy and appearances on Radio 4’s The Now Show. She’s caused quite a stir with her hilarious turns as a faux-naïve reporter on BBC2’s satirical news show The Mash Report. During her teens Rachel thought she would have a career as a classical musician –– she has a Music degree from Oxford, she’s an accomplished singer, and an excellent pianist; indeed, until recently she was a piano teacher. Rachel talks to Michael about how she moved from music to comedy via drama school and how music still has a central place in her life. Her choices of pieces reflect the breadth of her musical passions, from a recording of Tallis in which she sings, to Bernstein and the American Songbook. She loves music that tells a story, particularly Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade, and music that makes her laugh, like Tom Lehrer’s songs. Rachel talks movingly about depression and her work with The Samaritans, and we hear music by Debussy which she finds a comfort in difficult times. But behind the scenes he’s been busy writing for a whole host of other shows, such as Mock the Week and The Mary Whitehouse Experience, for comedians Jasper Carrott and Rory Bremner; he even used to write for the puppets on Spitting Image. He says “Weirdly, I think people are more inclined to believe comedians than they are politicians.” In Private Passions, Steve talk to Michael Berkeley about how it all began: when he was bad at games at school, and forced to play the clown. He reminisces about his first job, in a music shop in Croydon, which he describes as being so rich in comic material that it was a bit like a sitcom – all of life was there. He talks about how audiences have changed thanks to social media, and why he worries that mocking politicians may just be a way of feeding their gigantic egos. Music choices include Sibelius’s Violin Concerto, piano music by Debussy and by Scott Joplin, Shostakovich’s Jazz Suite, Dave Brubeck, and a comic masterpiece by Dudley Moore, “Bedazzled”. Comedy writer Sian Harries and Isy Suttie discuss that strange taboo - women's ambivalence towards having children. Why is it that you're supposed to want to have children, what does it mean if you're really not sure that you do, and why it is that so many people feel they have the right to tell her she's wrong to feel the way she does? Sian Harries has written comedy for The Now Show, Greg Davies' 'Man Down' and she's worked closely with her husband, the comedian Rhod Gilbert. But despite her success, she explains how bad it made her feel when someone walked up to her at a party and asked her when she was going to have children. She wonders why people feel they have the right to ask this question, and why it only seems to be of women but never men. She asks Isy, who has chosen to have children, if she always knew she wanted too and whether it just felt "right"? Producer in Bristol: Toby Field.

The Craft of Comedy conference, held in Llandudno, North Wales on 22 February 2014, was aimed at people looking to get into the comedy business. In this master class from the conference, John Finnemore, creator and writer of John Finnemore’s Souvenir Programme and Cabin Pressure talks to BBC Radio Comedy producer Colin Anderson about radio sketch writing. He talks about how he made it as a sketch writer and gives his advice to fledgling comedy writers. Having done his fair share of low-profile comedy gigs, John recommends that stand up comedy is a good training ground. Whether at a students’ union or a room above a local pub, this is your chance to find out what works and whether your sketches will stand up or fall flat in front of an audience. As John puts it, you need to perform your sketches live “to find out where the laughs are.” Sketch writing is easier to get into than trying to pitch a whole sitcom series to a radio show. A sketch may only be a couple of minutes, but once it’s been accepted, you can quickly build your relationship with that broadcaster. With the growth of open door radio shows such as The Show What You Wrote and Newsjack, it’s easier than ever for budding sketch writers to approach programme-makers and see results. John describes how best to pitch to these shows, which both accept submissions from completely new writers. John advises writers to keep their sketches short. Familiarise yourself with the style and cast of a show, avoid racist, sexist or violent content and remember to always include a punchline. The more you can become known as a promising writer the more useful feedback you will get from programme makers to help improve your work. John also encourages sketch writers to keep notebooks with them at all times and to never throw an idea away – you can always improve upon it later. Find out what writing routine works best for you, whether that means writing at 6am or 8pm. He also says that although comedy sketch show producers do get sent a lot of submissions, very few of them are usable, so good writers will stand out straight away - “the competition isn’t as daunting as you might think.” John Finnemore is a comedy writer for BBC Radio 4 Extra’s airline-themed sitcom Cabin Pressure, as well as the Radio Academy award winning sketch show John Finnemore’s Souvenir Programme. He has also written for That Mitchell & Webb Look, Dead Ringers and The Now Show. Colin Anderson graduated from the BBC’s programme-making trainee scheme to become a producer for BBC Comedy. He has produced sketch shows for various BBC Radio stations, as well as the comedy series Josie Long: All of The Planet‘s Wonders and The Maltby Collection. He has won Radio Academy Awards for The Now Show and Mark Thomas: My Life In Serious Organised Crime.
