2025 Kick Off and Looking for Potential As 2024 draws to a close, we're left, as usual, staring into the abyss of a new year… upheaval nationally, internationally and even in our tadpole pond of purebred dogs has left all of us off balance at some level.  Poised precariously here on my rickety soap box, I hope you'll join me on a journey of retrospection, through a few glimmers of hope and on to a couple new year's resolutions. Eight years ago this month, the first Pure Dog Talk episodes dropped just in time for the AKC National Championship shows. I racked up 10s of thousands of steps dropping flyers on every grooming table, interviewing treasures of our sport and gathering support for this novel way of sharing 20th century knowledge in a 21st century way.  Pure Dog Talk was the very first podcast dedicated to purebred dogs. Today we have a couple million downloads and have reached nearly 400 thousand listeners globally. Several major corporate sponsors and a couple hundred Patrons keep the lights on and the mp3s rolling so that YOU can stay on top of news, interviews, reviews, events and ideas. We've shown up in the AKC Gazette (shoutout and thanks to the Gazette crew!) I just found myself quoted in a TikTok posted to a Reddit “millennials” thread  fgs… I love hearing from all of you all the time. About how Pure Dog Talk “saved your life” or made it better or saved your dog's life. PS We've added a page to the website where you can upload your stories complete with photos! Check it out on the Testimonials tab at pure dog talk dot com. If you'd be so kind, indulge me while I take this opportunity for some shameless promotion. If you find Pure Dog Talk has helped you or someone you know, please consider joining our paid Patrons. This funding covers only overhead – website, audio editing and more – not me personally. When I launched the Patrons in 2018, I was paying for the podcast out of my pocket and eating a lot of peanut butter sandwiches.  A lot has changed since then (although, I still eat a lot of pb&j). The crowdsourced funds from Patrons of the show have enabled the growth and professionalization of the website, continued the outstanding production values of the pod and made us able to keep growing this resource to reach new audiences. Your Patrons membership adds value to the pod by initiating you into a devoted community of purebred dog enthusiasts including judges, handlers, owner handlers, newbies and master breeders. Patrons only After Dark gatherings each month let us hash out problems, share ideas, stand in community with one another and gain knowledge.  Visit https://puredogtalk.com/patron/ and select your Patron Package. You can join us for as little as $10/month or save 10% with an annual Patron membership. Come on over and join the best community in dogs. Aaaaaand, Starting Jan. 3, our new Patrons Only pod, Unleashed, delivers “let your hair down” episodes on all the hot takes in purebred dogs. Mailbag topics, commentary and insight with your favorite guests. In our first episode of the new show, Amanda Kelly joins me with thoughts  on "How Not to be a D*ck at the Dog Show”.... Patrons, BOLO an email with access deets!~ And, speaking of new stuff…..  We're SUPER excited to announce that, after EIGHT years in the...

The Hard Truth of Denver's Uniquely High Minimum Wage

Minimum wage in Denver is going up again in January, and the number of restaurants is going down. While Denver's restaurant community boasts a brand new Michelin star as of last week, more and more restauranteurs are leaving the Mile High in pursuit of greener pastures. So what exactly is happening that's making it so hard to run a great restaurant here? The Colorado Restaurant Association's CEO Sonia Riggs and government affairs director Colin Larson join host Bree Davies to talk about how Denver's unique minimum wage laws affect the restaurant business, why services fees probably aren't a cure-all and some of the reasons behind that mediocre $20 cheeseburger. Starting Jan. 1, Denver's minimum wage will be $18.81 per hour for non-tipped workers, up from $18.29, and $15.79 per hour for tipped workers, providing that they earn $3.02 in tips. The City of Denver has a breakdown of why our minimum wage is going up again this year.  Bree quoted this great article in the Denver Post by Allyson Reedy: “Overpriced Denver restaurants need a reality check for their inedible chicken and $20 cocktails.” For further listening, we talked about the real value to be found at one of Denver's Michelin star winners and broke down last week's announcement of new Michelin winners.  For even more news from around the city, subscribe to our morning newsletter Hey Denver at denver.citycast.fm. This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette Digital News Desk, and I'm here with your update for Tuesday, May 2.Tuesday will be a bit warmer than Monday, but still breezy. According to the National Weather Service it will be sunny with a high near 61 degrees in the Cedar Rapids area. A northwest wind will blow at 15 to 25 mph, with wind gusts as high as 35 mph. Tuesday night there will be clear skies, with a low of around 35 degrees.Next time you order items online, there's a high chance the box your goods arrive in was made in Cedar Rapids at International Paper's Cedar River Mill plant. And now International Paper is looking to invest into that plant's longevity. The plant at 4600 C St. SW — the largest 100-percent recycled paper mill in the Americas — broke ground Monday on its expansion project to generate an alternate steam supply and transition off coal-powered steam.International Paper operates 18 containerboard plants and 28 mills overall in the United States. The company creates material for fiber-based packaging products for e-commerce, processed food and beverages, fruit and vegetables, protein, distribution and durable and nondurable goods.Currently, the coal boilers at Alliant Energy's Prairie Creek Generating Station provide all of the plant's process steam. Starting Jan. 1, 2026, Alliant will no longer burn coal at Prairie Creek as part of an environmental lawsuit settlement. After studying options for an alternate steam supply, International Paper officials decided the company will build and operate two natural gas-powered boilers to generate steam on-site, as well as build a water treatment plant. International Paper — among the top eight users of city water — will continue to purchase Cedar Rapids water, and purify that to generate the steamProject manager Tony Cleaves told the Gazette that without the replacement steam supply provided by this $103 million expansion, Cleves said, International Paper would have to shut down its Cedar Rapids plant. After rising for weeks, the Mississippi River reached its peak over the weekend in parts of Southwest Wisconsin and Northeast Iowa. It was cresting at midday Monday in Davenport and the neighboring cities of Bettendorf and across the river in Illinois at Rock Island and Moline. The peak was slightly lower than forecast but still high enough to test the region's flood defenses and to keep officials on guard. The rising river, caused by a surge of water from melting snowfall to the north, may set some records along the river, but the National Weather Service still said the river levels generally will remain well below past records. Forecasts call for little rain in the coming days, so once the river crests it should soon begin a decline that will last for at least two weeks. The amount of increases in property tax revenue that local governments are able to spend would be limited under legislation that is destined to become state law soon.Republican leaders in the Iowa Senate and House on Monday announced their agreement on property tax legislation. The compromise legislation includes provisions from the separate bills that the two chambers had been advancing. The compromise bill includes the Senate's proposal to combine and simplify a variety of city tax levies and to address increases in property assessments and any corresponding increases in property tax revenue to local governments. The new bill — which is an amended version of the House's bill, House File 718 — also includes the House's proposal to

The Democrats have retained control of the Senate, and the House is still up in the air, although the numbers look to favor Republicans.  Throughout the midterm elections there have been many tight races and margins are just razor thin.  So why is America always divided 50-50?  As the two parties constantly jockey for the majority, neither party really builds any momentum.  Annie Lowrey, staff writer at The Atlantic, joins us for how polarization and a changing electorate is impacting politics.   Next, more colleges are offering admission to students who never even applied to those schools.  There has been an increase in universities that are participating in “direct admissions” programs to streamline the process for students but also align them with geographic and academic interests and boost enrollment  goals too.  The result is tens of thousands of students are getting offers they never thought they would.  Melissa Korn, higher education reporter at the WSJ, joins us for what to know.   Finally, dialing 0 to reach an operator or getting directory assistance from 411 is soon to be a thing of the past.  How many people even use those services now, as smartphones have made them obsolete?  Starting Jan. 1, AT&T is ending the service to landline customers in 21 states.  Wireless users aren't even offered it.  Jo Constantz, reporter at Bloomberg News, joins us for a brief history of 411.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

I'm Stacey Simms and these are the top diabetes stories and headlines of the past seven days. XX In the news is brought to you by T1D Exchange! T1D Exchange is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving outcomes for the entire T1D population. https://t1dexchange.org/stacey/ XX A new study shows nearly 1 in 5 adults in the U.S. with diabetes either skipped, delayed or used less insulin than was needed to save money. That comes out to roughly 1.3 million adults, or 16.5% of those who need insulin. The findings were based on data from the 2021 National Health Interview Survey, which is conducted annually by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and which interviews tens of thousands of Americans about their health-related experiences. It was the first time that the CDC had included questions about insulin use, though concerns about sky-high insulin prices have been reported for years. Starting Jan. 1, the Inflation Reduction Act, signed into law by President Joe Biden in August, will cap the monthly cost of insulin at $35 for seniors on Medicare. The bill, however, will leave out millions of Americans with private health insurance as well as those who are uninsured. It was also found to be more common among people with type 1 diabetes, at 18.6%, compared to those with type 2 diabetes, at 15.8% https://www.nbcnews.com/health/health-news/insulin-prices-many-adults-diabetes-ration-insulin-study-finds-rcna52287?cid=sm_npd_nn_tw_ma XX New islet cell transplant study looks very promising. Long term outcomes of two phase 3 clinical trials shows many patients didn't need insulin to maintain their blood sugar for up to eight years. It also showed that a new approach required fewer transplants than typical and was exceedingly safe. These trials included people who had kidney transplants and showed islet cell transplants for those people was safe and effective. 75 percent who initially were able to come off insulin therapy, more than half maintained total insulin independence, meaning they needed no additional insulin injections throughout the years of follow-up. https://www.pennmedicine.org/news/news-releases/2022/october/new-islet-transplant-method-leads-to-insulin-independence XX Study out of New Zealand looked at DIY diabetes tech and compared to some commercial offerings. Not sure what they were tyring to prvoe here because they looked at a closed loop system OpenAPS and compared it to a regular old pump and CGM system with no automation. No surprisingly, the people with type 1 in the AID group had much more time in range – about 14 percent more – than those using a standalone pump and CGM. No severe lows or DKA in either group. But these days, IMO, looking at an automated insulin delivery system to a pump and CGM that don't communicate is like comparing apples and chain saws. https://www.medtechdive.com/news/do-it-yourself-artificial-pancreas-diabetes/633888/ XX More good news for the iLet Bionic Pancreas. A clinical trial, conducted at 16 clinical sites across the United States, enrolled 326 participants ages 6 to 79 years who had type 1 diabetes and had been using insulin for at least 1 year. Participants were randomly allocated to a treatment group using the bionic pancreas or a standard-of-care control group that continued with their pre-trial method of glucose monitoring and insulin dosing. In participants using the bionic pancreas, A1C improved from 7.9% to 7.3%, yet remained unchanged among the control group. The iLet doesn't use carb counting – just meal announcements and it sets basal rates with just the user's body weight. It's currently in front of the US FDA, awaiting approval. XX Insulet issued an urgent medical device correction on Monday related to battery problems with a component of its Omnipod DASH system. The device uses a wearable insulin pod that's controlled by a personal diabetes manager (PDM), a smartphone-like device that does the calculations for bolus insulin doses. Insulet plans to replace the PDMs for all of its current Omnipod DASH users globally, incurring an aggregate charge of $35 million to $45 million, J.P. Morgan Analyst Robbie Marcus wrote in a Monday research note. Insulet said it received reports of some Omnipod DASH users having battery problems with their PDM devices, including the battery swelling, fluid leaking from the battery, and in rare cases, extreme overheating. In a letter to users, the company said it plans to ship updated devices to all current Omnipod DASH customers in the coming months. The battery issue applies to all of Insulet's Omnipod DASH PDMs, but the likelihood of problems may increase if the device has been in use longer than 18 months. Charging the device to a full battery and leaving it on the charger overnight also increases the risk. So far, Insulet said it has not received reports of any injuries related to the battery issues. The company advised patients to monitor their PDMs for battery problems, including a bulging back cover and the device losing its charge very quickly, overheating or emitting an odor. If patients notice any of these problems, they should not charge the device, stop using the system and switch to a backup insulin plan as soon as they can. Users can also contact Insulet for a temporary replacement device. https://www.medtechdive.com/news/insulet-battery-problems-omnipod-dash/634275/ XX MDT) announced today that it introduced a new diabetes management program for users of the MiniMed 770G insulin pump. The medtech giant calls the new program My Insights. It designed it exclusively for individuals using the MiniMed 770G hybrid closed-loop insulin delivery system. Using an individual's data, My Insight provides personalized tips, trends and reminders to help customers manage their diabetes. Its personalized recommendations come through via monthly emails with educational content. Medtronic aims to make the content relevant based on what the individual experiences. Medtronic said it represents the first diabetes management program to go beyond “generalized tips.” Instead, it offers personalized suggestions using data from the integrated insulin pump system. The company said it made My Insights available in the U.S. to anyone using MiniMed 770G. https://www.drugdeliverybusiness.com/medtronic-launches-diabetes-insights-program-for-minimed-users/ XX Some countries are seeing shortages of Ozempic, a weekly injectable meant for people with diabetes but can be prescribe off label for weight loss. Demand has gone way up since some Tik Tok and social media influencers have shared Ozempic as a weight loss drug. Diabetes groups and especially Australian advocacy groups have advised doctors to limit prescribing the drug to people with Type 2 diabetes. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-10-17/ozempic-weight-loss-demand-type-2-diabetes-drug-shortage/101542226 XX Back to the news in a moment but first.. People with diabetes are at higher risk of developing dementia. These researchers looked though 500-hundred thousand past medical records and found that an older class of type 2 diabetes medication known as glitazones helps reduce a person's dementia risk by 22%. Last week's FINA Technical Congress saw the passing of a proposed change to rule SW 10.8. As of Jan. 01, 2023: “The use of technology and automated data collection devices is permissible for the sole purpose of collecting data. Automated devices shall not be utilized to transmit data, sounds, or signals to the swimmer and may not be used to aid their speed.” This means wearable technology to collect data for research, education, and entertainment is legal. However, that data cannot be used in real-time - in swimming races - to aid a swimmer's speed. The impact of this FINA rule change will impact the sport for a generation. I think we will all look back at this moment in history, noting it as pivotal turning point. One of the few companies in a position to maximize this new FINA ruling is technology company and behemoth TritonWear. Today we have Tristan Lehari, CEO of TritonWear, to help us fully understand what this FINA rule change means to our sport. SwimSwam has been a TritonWear partner since 2014. The partnership for us is two-fold. TritonWear supports our news division, and TritonWear supports our continuing education in data collection for training and performance purposes.

For non-traditional cross-country ski nations like the U.S. and Canada, bringing home Olympic hardware is the benchmark for success. The World Cup, although prestigious among fans and athletes, doesn't share the same fanfare. And just below Olympic success, and again, off the general public's radar are World Championship results. Canada has Olympic nordic sport hardware: Beckie Scott's 2002 gold, Chandra Crawford's 2006 gold, and the duo of Scott and Sara Renner winning silver in in the team sprint also in 2006. Recent World Championship awards include Alex Harvey and Devon Kershaw winning team sprint gold in 2011. Harvey followed that up with more world-champs hardware: a sprint bronze in 2013, a sprint silver in 2015, and bronze that same year in the 30 k skiathlon. Shane Pearsall will take over as CEO of Cross Country Canada starting Jan. 1, 2017. (Courtesy photo) Canada's cross country scene is not lacking for international medals. Yet in recent years, the sport has received a smaller piece of the sports funding pie from government entities like Own The Podium (OTP), and from independent sponsors. Canada is now emerging into the women's World Cup ranks again, Dahria Beatty recently advanced to the sprint quarterfinals in Davos, Switzerland — she finished 25th on the day. But for many years as the men's team was loaded with Harvey, Kershaw, and Valjas, on and off the record the sense was that the women's side of the equation languished. The responsibility for developing the sport in Canada ultimately falls to Cross Country Canada (CCC), the national governing body for the sport. CCC's most recent CEO, Pierre Lafontaine, remained in the job for a year. Starting Jan. 1, 2017, the CEO role will belong to Shane Pearsall. Sound like a new name in cross-country ski circles? It is. Pearsall, 58, does come to the job with administrative experience in sport, for three years he served as Bobsleigh Canada Skeleton's (BCS) chief operating officer. In terms of connection to potential sponsors, Pearsall also worked in the oil and gas industry for 25 years including a long stint with AltaGas, a primary sponsor of CCC and its World Cup team. As an athlete, Pearsall was an elite hockey player and was a member of the 1980 Canadian men's national team. In this Nordic Nation episode, Pearsall answers questions about his vision for CCC and how he'll measure success.
