Joe Gibson, trail builder, writer, and Founder/Editor of Trail Crew Stories joins Maddie Pellman on Who Runs This Park: Park Enthusiasts Edition to dive into the hidden world of trail design. Joe's journey into the trail world began with a single volunteer day, leading to a career spent shaping the way people move through landscapes—often without them realizing it. He explains how great trail work is meant to be invisible, drawing a fascinating comparison between Disneyland's intentional illusions and the subtle deceptions that allow national park visitors to experience nature without seeing the engineering beneath their feet.We explore the art and science of trail building, from positive and negative control points to the stark differences between East Coast and West Coast trails. Joe shares insights from his early forays into writing about trails, his experience as project lead for The Parks Project coffee table book, and the whirlwind road trips he took to interview as many people as possible for his upcoming book. We also discuss the global rise of long-distance trails, including the Transcaucasian Trail in Armenia and Georgia, and the evolving role of trails as both recreational pathways and vital lifelines in the wilderness. We also talk about the threat trails and those that maintain them are under with regards to the recent layoffs in the park and forest service. As Joe says, it is a hard time to be a federal employee -- next time you see a trail crew member or a park ranger, tell them thank you! This week we are thrilled to have Katie Wightman, former Field Institute Director for the Sequoia Parks Conservancy, joining us for a conversation about the courage to revisit a dream from an earlier chapter in life, managing fear around trying something new, and how she finds wellness in the wilderness! ABOUT OUR GUEST: Katie Wightman worked for the Sequoia Parks Conservancy in Sequoia + Kings Canyon National Parks for 11 years and loved every minute. She had the privilege to work underground in Crystal Cave, organize the Dark Sky Festival, organize Science and Nature Camps for youth in the Central Valley, the backcountry Pear Lake Winter Ski Hut, and also Directed the Education Program for the SPC where she worked to provide as many opportunities as possible for people to connect with their public lands. Currently she is working on her Bachelor's of science in Nursing and is hoping to work in Emergency and Critical Care as well as continue in Wilderness Medicine. In her downtime she loves ultra running, amateur astronomy, and playing with her loving pup Sierra dog! IN THIS EPISODE: Katie and I sit down to chat from the historic Wolverton Service Camp in Sequoia National Park, home of the Volunteers in Parks Project in Sequoia-Kings Canyon National Parks We are greeted by a yellow rumped warbler and a golden crowned kinglet - get pumped, birders! Katie shares about the relationships between the National Park Service and their official nonprofit partners. In the case of Sequoia-Kings Canyon National Parks, their official partner is the Sequoia Parks Conservancy. We talk about her transition out of Director of the Field Institute at Sequoia-Kings Canyon National Parks and returning to a dream from an earlier chapter in life - nursing. How Katie finds wellness in the wilderness - and how trail running was a “very Katie solution” to getting far out in the backcountry in a limited amount of time. You're never too old to change your mind, and just because you fail at something doesn't mean you're a failure. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/wellnessinthewilderness/message

Keith Eshelman is the co-founder & CEO of Parks Project. Parks Project, founded in 2014, came from the idea that we can all do more to support America's parklands. In the early days, Keith volunteered at trail days in local national parks—through this, he realized that there was a huge lack of participation from the next generation. To change that, he created collections of apparel and accessories that would further connect consumers with parks to raise awareness of the projects taking place daily around the country and give folks a story to wear that supports outdoor conservation. In This Conversation We Discuss: [00:00] Intro[01:01] What are Parks Project's products?[01:33] Where the idea of Parks Project came from[03:00] The progression of Parks Project products [04:59] Finding customers through organic influence[07:00] Knowing that “We're onto something”[08:17] Sponsor: Electric Eye electriceye.io/connect[09:13] Sponsor: Sendlane sendlane.com/honest[10:39] Insider perspectives for launching a brand[12:33] Ecom vs wholesale buyers[14:01] The evolution of the brand[15:30] Advice for founders finding product-market fit[17:30] Manage your relationships with your customers[18:39] Getting featured by Fast Company[19:18] There's still much to do and learn[19:54] The wellness aspect of Parks Project[20:44] Where to find Parks Project[21:08] Keith's tips when going to parksResources:Subscribe to Honest Ecommerce on YoutubeCelebrating America's National Parks with a line of apparel, accessories and home decor parksproject.usConnect with Keith linkedin.com/in/keith-eshelman-a972473Schedule an intro call with one of our experts electriceye.io/connectSchedule your free consultation with a Sendlane expert sendlane.com/honestIf you're enjoying the show, we'd love it if you left Honest Ecommerce a review on Apple Podcasts. This Earth Month... buy more stuff?!We're about to be bombarded with messaging about corporate climate initiatives. We'll have the chance to buy merch to "support" the planet. And we'll be incentivized to spend more so that a small portion can be donated to organizations fighting climate change. As you might expect, it's all marketing. Earth Month and Earth Day seem to have become another excuse for a sale. But we miss a key issue in our fight for change if we stop at the "greedy corporation" critique. In this short dispatch, I compare Panasonic's #CreateTodayEnrichTomorrow campaign to Parks Project's mission to do good, and I advocate for a systems-level critique that can penetrate do-good messaging to get to the heart of the problem.Footnotes: Panasonic's ad: Green Impact (with Michael Phelps) Panasonic CES 2022 Top Things to See The Entrepreneurs Helping Save U.S. National Parks via Forbes Capitalist Realism by Mark Fisher ★ Support this podcast ★

In My Heart with Heather Thomson

Prior to starting the outdoor lifestyle brand Parks Project, Keith was one of TOMS earliest employees. He was initially struck by discovering the overwhelming backlog of much-needed funding to complete projects in parks, and uncovered a need to educate the next generation of advocates. With that in mind, and taking key learnings from his previous ventures, he started Parks Project to show consumers that conservation can be cool and stylish. All of its products give back to specific conservation efforts focused on protecting our national parks. In only six years, what started as one t-shirt has now grown to dozens of apparel and home goods, and more than $1.3 million in donations to more than 50 conservatories that ensure the projects they're committing to make the biggest impact. Parks Project's mission is to protect and preserve our parklands for generations to come by educating, advocating, volunteering, and activating park supporters to get involved in conservation. To date, Parks Project has contributed over $1,200,000 to help fund vital projects in parks, paying it forward so we can leave it better than we found it. It's inspiring to see the results of Parks Project's work—2,822 native species planted in Muir Moods; 20,647 kids funded to visit a national park through the National Park Foundation; 58,800 meters of trail restored in Yosemite. Their goal is to fund 100 projects and log 100,000 volunteer hours in the next decade. ** Use Code: INMYHEART for 25% OFF! http://www.revo.com ** Use Code: TREATYOURSELF20 for 20% OFF! http://www.beyondfresh.com ** 10% OFF your first order! http://www.cloudwaterbrands.com

About this episode My guest this week is Keith Eshelman, co-founder and CEO of the Parks Project. The Parks Project is a social commerce company in that they have created some of the most comfortable clothing you will ever wear AND they have donated over 50% of their profits to over 50 partners such as Yosemite Conservancy, Sierra Club, the National Park Foundation, and many more. After a weekend volunteering in the Santa Monica Mountains in 2014, Keith and his co-founder, both TOMS employees at the time, were struck by the challenges facing America's underfunded and underappreciated National Parks. They set out to harness consumer power to help support the enormous backlog of underfunded projects within the national parks system by creating collections of apparel and accessories that would further connect consumers with the parks they love. Within this episode you will hear quite a bit about the influence that Blake Mycoskie, the founder of TOMS, had on Keith's journey. And that's the beauty of entrepreneurship…it's not a solo journey. It's also not an overnight journey, and more times than not…it's decades in the making. In this episode, you'll hear: How Keith was born in northern California and grew up around career professionals. He had a conventional path pursing education that would lead him to a successful job. He shares as a child he wanted to be a doctor and went to UC San Diego Medical School but left after sophomore year as he couldn't consume the detailed information required for med school. He graduated with a management science degree, minor in Spanish that allowed him to travel. He shares his love for Brands, but not only for their products but the whole company, and how he wanted to help companies that were making a difference. Before he joined Toms, we worked in London with Puma and OMD, usually in product marketing. When working at TOMS he experiences how a purchases can not only for fill the customer but help people and charities in need. Like Toms theory of purchasing a pair of shoes can give another child a pair for shoes. Keith shares how TOMS allowed him to have his first taste of entrepreneurship by being allowed to run popup shops. Keith explains his passion for recycling plastic in clothing like board shorts and wanted the product to have its own story. He shares how he found his problem and why he pursued founding Parks Project, and what he is doing to fix it. How he started his company from his garage and has been growing his team ever since. How Parks Project is empowering the next generation, and their mission is to leave it, as you found it. Keith shares how his company is here to build and innovate the product with useful recycling. On this week's episode, our host Nina Rupp is joined by Keith Eshelman, the co-founder and CEO of Parks Project. Keith recorded his segment from a yurt in his backyard (seriously... how cool is that?) and he and Nina explore everything about the standout for-profit business, which was created solely to give back to our national parks. Parks Project was featured in the Cassandra Daily Newsletter in a roundup of cause-oriented merch, and just hit a milestone of giving $1 million back to national parks back in August. Not only does each collection of Parks Project apparel help fund any number of projects in our national parks—including vital wildlife conservation efforts, trail restorations, visitor education and more—but the merch is dope: it's vintage-inspired (there's tons of 70's and 80's inspired graphics and details), taps into 2020's tie-dye craze, and is perfect for wearing around the house between those socially-distant outdoor adventures.

Ashley Lyn Oslon in her own words... At age Fourteen, I was paralyzed in a horrible car wreck that took the life of my father, crippled my mother and injured my younger sister. That one moment transformed my entire world, but it couldn’t dampen my spirit. I graduated high school on-time and received a full scholarship to the University of Southern California where I graduated with honors.wheelchairtraveling.com stats for 2020 After high school, a group of friends and I traveled to Greece. It was tough getting around, but for fourteen memorable days I had the time of my life. Years later, I went to Berlin and had a totally different experience with more accessibility. Those two trips lit a fire in me to discover more. I wanted to see the world! Now that I was paralyzed, I wondered, ‘what can I see and do now?’ After college, I first interned at an indie music management company followed by four years of employment at Wente Vineyards where I was the Executive Marketing and Production Assistant for the Concerts; performers George Carlin to Crosby, Stills and Nash to Ray Charles graced the stage. I quit this job in 2009 to go full-time with wheelchairtraveling.com, which I founded in 2006. The website was designed so that not only I but anyone around the world could share their travel experiences – from basic travel needs to thrill seeking adventures. Finding accurate accessible travel information is challenging and sometimes non-existent and I wanted to change this. Plus, we all have different interests, abilities, and things we are or are not willing to put up with, and all of these perspectives are needed to be represented when it comes to the world of accessible travel. The mission of wheelchairtraveling.com is to empower people with limited mobility, their friends and loved ones to access and experience the world of leisure and adventure travel. Breaking away from boundaries and testing our limits takes courage, which makes the journey of life all that more satisfying. That’s the main reason I founded wheelchairtraveling.com—to remove mental and physical barriers surrounding travel. My role at wheelchairtraveling.com has crossed over into many areas of life to empower people. I am an advocate for reasonable accessibility on many fronts from hotels to airplanes to city-planning to healthy lifestyle options. I’ve traveled to many countries on five continents, personally experiencing the diversity of accessible travel. I work with both the CA State Parks and the National Park Service to improve access to parks, which has been transformed into the May 2015 launch of the Access to Parks Project. In 2020, I traveled to New Zealand to assess access at parks across the country. I also lecture about accessible travel around the country for all different size groups, mentor newly injured people with spinal cord injuries, write for national magazines, am an ambassador for the Abilities Expo, and more. Ever since my injury, my eyes have been opened to the beauty of life, from the grandest of scales to the tiniest little parts. Now 15 years and a college degree later, I welcome life with open arms and remember that all journeys begin with an open heart.

We had a ton to celebrate this week, and we share all of the good news on this week's episode, which just so happens to feature a very special surprise guest. This is a fun one, so we hope you'll tune in. Here's what we talked about on this week's episode:We opened a bottle of Mawby Us Brut. This bottle of Michigan sparkling wine is among the best bottles of Midwestern wine we've ever had. It's perfect for celebrations, but also is priced at a price that you can afford to drink for everyday wins as well. CONGRATULATIONS to Bridget's sister Shannon who delivered a beautiful new baby boy this week. We're so happy and excited for their entire family! We're very concerned about Kanye West. Fortunately, after recording, he issued an apology to Kim and the rest of his family. Hopefully he's on a path to a better place! Our special guest is Bridget's other sister Brittany who works for the Washington Nature Conservancy and worked very hard with a lot of other people to get The Great American Outdoors Act passed by Congress. We're so excited to see this bi-partisan legislation passed - congrats Brittany!Bridget highly recommends getting gifts from Parks Project for your nature loving friends. Nick extolled the virtues of having a library card - check out everything you can get at the Lake Geneva Public Library!Brittany shared Subpar Parks, an Instagram account that beautifully illustrates hilariously bad reviews of our National Parks.Bridget is going to be making some Beef Empanadas (or maybe chicken, because, you know Bridget) this week. And Nick is super excited about this Arrachera Taco recipe - just don't make it gringo style, please! In case you missed it, we released a special episode this past week with Laurin Mack, proprietor of The Conrad Seipp Brewing Co. We talked about how she brought back this extinct beer brand, some of the challenges faced, and lots more. You can listen in your favorite podcast player, or click this link to be directed to your favorite place to listen. Thanks for listening, we hope you enjoy this week's episode, and please subscribe, rate us, review us, and share with your friends! This week is a short episode to provide updates on what is going on with Park Leaders. Thank you for the great feedback about the episode with Betty Soskin. It was a delight to interview her, and I am pleased you liked it as well. If you haven't listened to that episode yet, you don't want to miss it. I have some upcoming trips. Perhaps we can meet up? I will be in Dallas in early August, and Asheville, NC in October. If you live nearby, and would like me to visit your park, get in touch. Or, if you would like to set up a speaking engagement, it would be fantastic to give a presentation about parks for you. The People of Parks Project is going away soon. If you have not had a chance to lend your voice, you can do so here. Would you like to be a contributor for Park Leaders? I have two opportunities for you. First, I am going to start including articles on the website. If you would like to contribute an article about parks, get in touch. I could use your help. Second, I want to include stories from Park Rangers other than myself on the Park Leaders Show. If you have a story you would like to share, reach out. Let's get your story on the show. Have you checked out Creating Disney Magic yet? Creating Disney Magic is a show I do with Lee Cockerell. It is a weekly show about leadership, management, and customer service. There is plenty of value packed into the 15-minute episodes.

Communication in Parks Panel Discussion

Park Leaders Show

A common theme from the People of Parks Project has been a frustration with communication between leadership, admin staff, and staff in the field. When I hear the same thing come up often I know we need to lean into it a little bit more. I know this isn't a problem I could properly address on my own, so I called in the help of some friends. Joining me for a special panel discussion episode of the Park Leaders Show are: Ray Bivens- Director of Delaware State Parks, Eric Watilo- Region Manager with Washington State Parks, and Sarah Milbourne-  Park Manager with Maryland State Parks. Each member of this panel was selected to give the panel three layers of park management to offer insight on how to improve communication. Ray, Eric, and Sarah have also been previous guests on the Park Leaders Show, so I understood they would each offer valuable ideas for you and your park. You can help shape future episodes of the Park Leaders Show by participating in the People of Parks Project. By answering a couple of short questions, you can help me understand what subjects will be most valuable to offer on the Park Leaders Show.
