We're all hoping 2022 will be different. And that WE'LL be different. Like, maybe everything will just be 100% different? This week, Sarah has you covered as we take a deep dive into New Year's resolutions and how to actually stick to them. We learn a brief and fascinating history of New Year's celebrations, resolutions, and how we've come to kiss strangers at midnight then go join a gym while hungover as heck. And we've all been there: you set a lofty goal, immediately suck, and give up. Not this year! Sarah walks us through how to choose an achievable goal, set yourself up for success, and ultimately make small steps for big, positive changes. So, have at it. It's us again, folks! Back for another epi- ahh! Did the power just go out?! We'll meet you in the kitchen! This week, Dana takes us back to winter of 2021 where the hits just kept on coming. We learn about how preventable, enormous, and deadly the Texas power outages were. And, how fun! We also learn that these rolling blackouts and power surges are going to be much more common in the years to come as climate change, corrupt political systems, and aging infrastructure impacts countries around the world.Luckily, you have us. Dana teaches us the ins and outs of preparing for a winter power outage ahead of time and how to stay safe during one. But first, Sarah has to make sure someone isn't carefully knocking on her closet door to murder her. We're back to part two of surviving the holidays with your family. We love 'em, we hate 'em, we have to bite our tongue to avoid World War 3.Picking up where we left off, Sarah recaps why visiting home or spending quality time with your family during the holidays can be truly torturous. Luckily Sarah came equipped with an arsenal of tactics to set yourself up for a realistic, doable holiday season even with your most difficult family members. We've officially arrived at the family gathering, where you're navigating big personalities, an abundance of food and drink, and really need to figure out an escape plan. When in doubt: find a pet and go hide. You've got this! While we celebrate the holiday, AYOR wants to acknowledge that we are on stolen land and we should spend this (and all) Thanksgiving giving thanks and love and support to the indigenous tribes of North America. Back in action after a week of rest, Dana and Sarah dive right back in to the end of the world! Or is it? This week, Dana waffles between nervous laughter and educating us on the current supply chain crisis while teaching us what the heck is going on, why it's happening, and what we can do about it.Join Dana and Sarah as they reflect on the early stages of the pandemic and recall the great hand sanitizer shortage of March 2020 - and, well, you know the rest. Dana attempts to summarize the global supply chain and the pandemic's impact on a broken system, which ultimately has real impacts on those in need and reliant on imported goods for their survival. We then walk through all the ways in which we as consumers can be smarter with our purchasing, more conscientious of our local community, and overall be better inhabitants of the planet we're slowly (quickly?) killing. Just in time for the holidays, how fun! And a big thank you to everyone who joined us in a restful week of prioritizing ourselves and our most pressing needs. As a huge thank you to community members that shared their self care indulgences with us, we announce the winner of our giveaway at the end of today's episode. Thank you to all who participated. Look at you, surviving another week on this planet! And maybe even thriving?Well, if you're like us, you really aren't thriving lately. And in an effort to practice what we preach in terms of bettering ourselves and avoiding certain death, Sarah and Dana are taking this week off from podcasting to focus on our mental and physical health. But, instead of an episode, we are excited to announce a little giveaway opportunity for you, the listener!Instead of taking this hour to listen to our usual life or death content, we want to encourage you to join us in a little extra self care this week. Like, really serious self care: take an hour to catch up with a friend, finally donate those clothes that just don't fit anymore, stock up on your go-bag supplies, or go watch every dumb TikTok we've ever made. We'll be giving away a super fun gift to say “I love you and heck yeah” to a listener that really takes this opportunity to indulge in themselves and their most pressing needs. So, share what you do for yourself this week by tagging us on Instagram, shoot us an email, dm us the deets, whatever you're most comfortable with. We'll announce the winner on our next episode!Thank you all for being here. Like, really. Thank you so much. We love doing this podcast and are excited to come back refreshed and recharged and hopefully alive. We hope you are, too.

Keep your friends close and your podcast hosts closer! For this week's episode, Sarah asked our listeners (you) what everyday life stressor is on their (your) mind the most. Immediately, a tremendous pattern was clear: how the heck do you make friends as an adult?!Dana and Sarah chat about friends old and new, how to capture people you like and make them yours, and what makes meaningful friendships last a lifetime all while navigating a global pandemic. Along with some tangible tips and tricks for even finding potential friends in the first place, Sarah walks us through our new favorite game: absolutely tearing apart a horribly misguided wikiHow. This episode is packed with laughs and even a few tears because friendship is beautiful and hard and confusing to navigate once your neighborhood carpool to soccer practice is off the table. This week we take a dip into the At Your Own Risk archives with a lovely interview with one of Sarah's dearest friends, former roommates, and super impressive human person: Morgan Perry Whitten. At 29, Morgan owns a whole entire house. If you're anything like Dana and Sarah, you wonder if you'll ever own a home and if this episode will ever be remotely relatable for you. Well, you're in luck! Between Dana's insightful reflections (i.e. rants) on capitalism, we learn how a self-proclaimed normal millennial managed to buy a home before 30, what the home-buying process was like, and how to find the confidence to roll up her sleeves to make her home feel like home. Most importantly, we discuss the reality of our generation's financial plight and intense anxiety, as well as the guilt and jealousy wrapped up in wanting to check off those big life achievements. The short of it: your feelings are normal, you're not alone in your struggles, and anyone you envy who says they haven't gotten help is at least a little bit lying.Morgan is an account director in the marketing and advertising world, but, as a tremendous side-hustle, Morgan has taken the Home Decor DIY and Design industry by storm. On top of all that, this rockstar millennial recently launched professional E-Design services for her audience base, while offering DIY and homeowner tips and tricks to make your house a home within your personal budget and style through her instagram @firsthomeforever. Give her a follow and, better yet, hire her to help you make your house - or rental - a home!Like the show? Want more content? Have a snarky comment about the quality of our audio? We asked and you answered: what's the scariest situation you can think of? And wow… a resounding “ROCKETING OFF A BRIDGE AND SINKING INTO OBLIVION IN MY CAR” blasted through the anxious void. This week Dana takes us on a deep dive (truly, we promise… pun not intended) into why sinking into a watery car grave is such a prominent and readily available fear, dream, and intrusive thought. Together we re-re-re-reframe our perspective, understand our subconscious, and decide who to blame for it all. The short answer: capitalism? Fascinating!Once we understand the why behind this super common fear, we take a deep breath and learn what the heck to do if you find yourself sinking into Atlantis in your Toyota Corolla. Dana even gives us some tips for handy gadgets to keep in your vehicle to best prepare for this rather unlikely emergency. But if you take anything away from this episode, make sure it's the reminder that quicksand is super outdated. Like the show? Want more content? Have a snarky comment about the quality of our audio? Welcome back to an electro-LIT episode of At Your Own Risk! Ready to sweat? This week, Sarah dips her toes into Dana's world and tackles the only thing worse than being alive at the gym: dying at the gym.Yes, you read that right. And no, this is not an hour-long prank. With a knee injury recently throwing Sarah's fitness journey off course, she couldn't help but wonder if her gym-centric fears and anxieties hold any weight. (Get it?) As Dana listens in horror, we learn about a few medical emergencies induced by exercise and diet, also known as Gym Tan Laundrying yourself to death. We also realize that adults should not be in charge, children should not work out so hard they wet their pants, and that both knowing your body and having a workout buddy is vital for survival.Lucky for us (very subjective), Sarah then walks us through three horrifying tales of real gym-related deaths based on her intrusive gym fears: Ben Shaw's barbell-induced traumatic asphyxia, killer treadmills, and the mysterious death of Kendrick Johnson. If you think COVID-19 is horrifying (spoiler alert: you still should), just wait until you hear Dana explain why melting ice caps and permafrost is the biggest bummer since a tiny bat ruined our lives.Join Sarah as Dana teaches us all about the a relatively unknown facet of the UN's Climate Change report that is sure to catch your terrified eyes. And that's the sweet, sweet release of ancient viruses and microbes which have been frozen in permafrost around the world for centuries and are now slowly being released into the air for us to enjoy in our final years as a species. Fun stuff! Dana walks through why we should and shouldn't be afraid of Frankenviruses, and why we should trust scientists to do their jobs. Wazzuppp, cool kids!? Pin back those bangs with a sparkly butterfly clip, cram those feet into some clear jelly sandals, and hunker down with your favorite flavor of Fruit Roll-Up because today we are taking a deep dive into nostalgia and the recent resurgence of Y2K everything.Join Dana as Sarah teaches us all about the surprisingly violent history of nostalgia and how a variety of western societies punished their citizens for their valid, natural thoughts and feelings! Plus, we'll then learn about nostalgia as a super powerful marketing tool, why it is so damn effective with millennials (especially now), and how to understand the difference between a grateful, joyful glance back to childhood versus an all-consuming desperate need to not be in the present moment. (I'm fine!!!) While we do learn that Sarah is low-key obsessed with the manipulations of Don Draper, she still gives us some excellent advice on how to be a responsible consumer, not cave to every 90s throwback ad campaign, and ways to be intentional with our excitement over Dunkaroos at the grocery store.Like the show? Another week, another impending civilization destroying natural disaster that could happen any second! Join Dana and Sarah as they welcome Misty Stinnett and Lisa Linke, co-hosts of the amazing podcast Go Help Yourself, for part two of this blast from the past episode of At Your Own Risk.Hold on to your pyroclastic flows, people! This week, Dana explains that while a Super Volcano eruption is not likely to happen, it would absolutely destroy life as we know it and the atmosphere would fill with fiberglass and corn would cease to exist. What's not to love! Together, we'll learn what makes a volcano “Super”, that Misty might definitely have a lava kink, and what to expect if the massive earth zit in Yellowstone National Park exploded all over the eastern hemisphere. Once we grapple with our inevitable - and surprisingly sexy? - deaths and deliberate over how we'd spend our final moments on earth, we learn the basics of surviving a standard eruption from a less super volcano (sorry, volcano). Somehow, there's some good news after all so stick around! So many thanks again to Misty and Lisa for agreeing to chat with a very nervous and bushy tailed Dana and Sarah back in spring of 2021. These two women are truly so kind and gracious and smart - not to mention so gosh darn funny. Do yourself a solid and find their podcast, Go Help Yourself, across all major podcast platforms as well as Instagram and Twitter at @gohelpyourselfpodcast!And just a reminder for Misty and Lisa's plugs:• Tansy: a lovely black-owned plant and curated greenery store in Burbank• Feed Culver: a wonderful provides free meals to those experiencing homelessness or struggling to afford good food by working with local restaurants who are also suffering during the pandemic• Everytown: Please subscribe to their newsletters and visit their website to learn more about fighting for gun control legislation and how you can help make good change happen in your areaLike the show? Take a journey back in time with one of Dana and Sarah's first recordings - before they even conceived At Your Own Risk's final form! We are joined by Lisa Linke and Misty Stinnett, the hilarious and brilliant hosts of the incredible podcast Go Help Yourself, and attempt to absorb as much wisdom and charm from them as possible over Zoom.We chat with Misty and Lisa about self love and imposter syndrome, managing a successful self-help podcast, and how to accept a compliment. These two women are inspiring, collected, and so thoughtful. We are super lucky that they agreed to let our evergreen voices grill them on how to podcast so perfectly. And you know what? We actually learned a thing or two! Stick around for next week's part two where we'll learn to survive the unthinkable. Or at least die quickly.Like the show? Want more content? Another week, another crisis! Since we took a risk and changed up our structure last week, that means this episode is all about death and despair. Or is it?Hold onto your butts people, because we have another risky move to add to our repertoire! This week, Dana pivots slightly from her usual “escaping death” approach to life and broadens her half of the podcast to general emergencies that would make you scream obscenities. Up first: what to do if your pet (mostly dog or cat) runs away!Prepare for the worst like a pro as Dana walks us through how to avoid losing your pet, what to do if it happens, and how to ensure you're reunited with your unharmed furry friend as soon as possible. As usual, we also learn that Sarah is hoarding all sorts of bizarre memories - like The Monkey Man saving “her” cat. This week, AYOR changes things up a bit. Because change is good, right? Right?? We are excited to announce a more coherent deep-dive into one topic per episode, led by either Sarah or Dana on their respective themes. Thank you to everyone who suggested this structure and we are excited to hear your feedback! As long as it's very, very nice!Have you ever felt like you look like a strong, sexy force to be reckoned with, only to see a photo of yourself and realize you might be better suited for sinking pirate ships? Well, you're in luck! This week Sarah helps us understand Selfie Dysmorphia (who knew it had a name!) because you know things are bad when you can't tell what's scarier: the ocean being on fire or seeing a photo of yourself!Sarah walks us through the psychology behind judging ourselves so harshly, obsessing over photos, and even using filters or photo editing apps to break our own brains. We also learn the ways that the camera IS actually lying to us and why you shouldn't believe those mean thoughts in your little noggin. Sarah's advice yet again leaves us feeling more fit to manage such big, icky thoughts and hopefully enjoy our (fleeting) lives a little more. Like the show? Want more content? Don't forget to wash your hands, because today's episode is a real doozy!Dana and Sarah welcome special guest and friend of the pod Laura Robinson for this exciting episode of At Your Own Risk. Laura tells us about her particularly wild trip around the sun, from up and moving to Hawaii to live in a minivan to the highs and (mostly) lows of trying to become a doctor prioritizing the safety and comfort of non-binary and transgender patients in the US. Along with many belly laughs, funny lady Laura gives us a lovely dose of perspective on the possible side effects of disregarding Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs and some inspiration to pursue a life of adventures by choosing to believe in ourselves - sometimes against all odds.Speaking of choosing to believe in ourselves, we choose to believe that a particularly disturbing statistic Dana has said aren't always right… or are they? As she preps for medical school this fall, Laura turns the tables on her old pals Sarah and Dana by teaching them all the ways single celled organisms are trying to murder us. Luckily, Laura has some good news about parasites and helpful tips for avoiding a life threatening illness. Our biggest take-away: poop is the enemy.Like the show? Want more content? You only live once and you only die once, that's what we always say! Well, at least that's what we say after this week's episode.Join Sarah as she guides us through the risky business of the YOLO Economy - also known as the way Dana has accidentally lived her adult life. Welcome to the party, everyone! Sarah teaches us the history of “yolo” as a word and concept, and how the pandemic shifted the priorities and perspectives of a jaded generation. Plus, learn how you can yolo (in this economy?) successfully and enjoy your life a little more fully. But don't fret, we won't yolo for too long because Toto… I don't think we're in Kansas anymore. Wait, actually, that's exactly where we are. Dana takes us on a wild ride through the ins and outs of tornadoes, including how to prepare, survive, and hopefully not end up driving directly through Tornado Alley by accident (hypothetically).Like the pod? And we're back… to normal? In this episode of At Your Own Risk, Sarah and Dana attempt to prepare themselves and listeners alike for reentering society semi-post-pandemic. Sounds simple enough, right?Sarah starts us off with explaining why the pandemic royally messed with our heads and why some of us are feeling so extra paralyzed by the idea of becoming a functional human in a social society again. Luckily, Sarah has some tangible tips and tricks for us to follow as we slowly but surely reenter the world when and where we can. But with a newfound freedom to go live our lives again, we find ourselves yet again worrying about of our classic, staple fears that didn't plague us quite as much while trapped inside our homes. For Dana (and hopefully - well not hopefully, but you know what we mean - our listeners), these fears include mugging. Dana teaches us how to avoid being mugged in the first place by understanding the perspective of the mugger… and inadvertently teaching our audience how to mug people. Still, whether you pick up a new hobby robbing innocent victims on the street or want to learn some helpful tips for not becoming a victim yourself: this episode is for you!Like the pod? Ahoy, matey! Now that our introductions are behind us, let's dive into a properly structured At Your Own Risk episode. Bonded over the trauma of their own existence, Dana and Sarah discuss the original idea behind this podcast: imposter syndrome!Sarah gives us the very helpful (and only mildly disturbing) run-down on the social media buzzword of the year: imposter syndrome. She even walks us through a fun little quiz to help us determine how totally messed up our brains might be - follow along for some extra fun! By the end of Sarah's time, you'll have hopefully decided if you're interesting enough to even have imposter syndrome and be able to maybe even tell your friends who probably secretly hate you what kind of imposter you are!But don't get too comfy, because once we've thoroughly diagnosed ourselves with Not Good Enough disease, Dana takes us into the murky, waist-deep world of shark attacks. We also find out that Dana might actually have a death wish far greater than we'd realized based on how many personal, tangential shark attack stories she seems to have? We'll table that... For now, we focus on how to prevent a shark attack and ultimately how to up your chances of not dying so you can instead have the coolest story of anyone at your post-pandemic parties.Want to support the pod and join a community of expert worriers? Wow. Here we are. The first episode of At Your Own Risk. To start out this wacky endeavor, we learn more about cohost Dana and her bizarre rise to internet semi-fame after lots of bumps in the road. Sarah gets to the bottom of Dana's career fails and successes, all-consuming imposter syndrome, and how grappling with the projections of surprisingly demanding instagram users is eating away at her sanity.Once Dana is done reliving the trauma of her 20s, she wakes up from her anxiety-induced coma and turns the tables on Sarah. We learn that while the internet may seem like the end of humanity, the San Andreas fault and an overdue earthquake catastrophe will for sure be the end of Southern California. Together the duo quickly realize moving to Los Angeles might have been a huge mistake, but they'll just laugh and drink about it for now. Care to join?As always, we want to hear from you!
