On this episode, I'm joined by Sedona Prince and Jim Cavale to talk about Sedona's involvement as a named plaintiff in the House v NCAA case, Jim's role in attempting to create a players association for college athletes, and their view on the role and power of college athletes going forward. We also talk about the growth of women's college basketball. While Caitlin Clark gets a lot of the credit for the explosion in popularity, Sedona's viral Tik Tok video in 2021 is often referred to as the moment that changed the NCAA and women's college basketball forever. Events that happened on November 6 This Day in Baseball history. November 6 , 1887 Walter Johnson was born on this day in 1887. Considered by many to be the greatest right-hander in baseball history, Johnson was the hardest thrower of his time. He was a phenomenally successful pitcher on often terrible Washington Senators' teams. As a veteran, he anchored the only Senators' World Series winning club, in 1924. He and Christy Mathewson were the first pitchers inducted into the Hall of Fame. He was known as the “Big Train” and in later years, upon seeing Bob Feller throw his hard one, Johnson admitted that he had thrown harder in his day. Johnson is the greatest player to ever play for the Washington Senators, debuting on August 2, 1907, against the Detroit Tigers and Ty Cobb. “He's got a gun concealed about his person. They can't tell me he throws them balls with his arm.” – Famed writer Ring Lardner wrote of JohnsonSam Rice tells the truth about game 3 of the 1925 World Series - On November 6, 1974, the contents of a letter written by the late Sam Rice to the Hall of Fame are revealed in Cooperstown, New York. In the letter, Rice, who had instructed the letter be opened after his death, says that he did successfully make a disputed catch in the 1925 World Series.Bud Selig goes toe to toe with the players association - November 6, 2001 — Denying it's a negotiating ploy, major league owners give commissioner Bud Selig the authority to “begin the process” of eliminating two ‘to be announced' teams by a 28-2 vote. Donald Fehr, the Players Association executive director, calls the action of possibly eliminating the Expos, Twins, or Marlins most imprudent and unfortunate, and the worst manner in which to begin the process of negotiating a new collective bargaining agreement. We had hoped that we were in a new era, one that would see a much better relationship between players and owners. Today's announcement is a severe blow to such hopes.November 6, 1950, Branch Rickey signs a five-year contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates after selling his 25 per cent interest in the Brooklyn Dodgers' franchise. On October 26, Rickey had resigned as Brooklyn's president, giving way to Walter O'Malley. Rickey will serve as the Pirates' general manager and executive vice-president. The ‘Mahatma's' magic doesn't seem to work, as the Bucs will compile a 269-501 record (.349) during his tenure in Pittsburgh.

0:00 ... Ross hello and welcome ... introduces Bruce, Michael, and guest Kevin Winter ... this is episode #114 in honor of Scotty Pippen Jr. 1:20 ... Ross's Bet Online live commercial read 2:15 ... Bruce complains that with two Celtics fans on the show, show #114 is NOT in honor of Boston legend Bob Cousy. Ross expertly shuts Bruce down with a zinger that left a mark! 2:46 ... Bruce introduces our guest Kevin Winter, the long-time studio host of the NBA on ESPN Radio. 3:53 ... Ross tees the crew up for a discussion of Team USA as they finished their tune-up games on Monday against Germany. Kevin feels the teams around the world not only can compete with team USA, but want to kick some American butt. 5:40 ... Bruce points out how LeBron James has been the dominant player for Team USA in their "friendly" matches. 7:04 ... Stephen Curry will be a huge factor and Kevin discusses some lineups he'd like to see Steve Kerr try. 8:13 ... Jaylen Brown was passed over for Team USA in favor of teammate Derrick White and Kevin said that Grant Hill always wanted White on the team, although he feels Jalen Brunson would have also been a solid choice. 10:02 ... Bruce asks if White's time in the San Antonio Spurs system prepared him to become the winning player he's turned out to be. Kevin feels that former Spur players become excellent fits on the teams they end up playing for. 11:50 ... Ross wonders if Chris Paul will be a great fit in San Antonio and be successful. Kevin is not so sure. 13:17 ... Bruce asks Kevin what it was like to be in the middle of hosting the NBA Finals live on the radio while riding the emotional roller coaster as a fan of the Celtics. 16:20 ... World B wants to know if Kevin feels the Celtics can repeat as champs next year? Kevin has his eye on the Bucks with Giannis and Damian Lillard but is less high on the Sixers. 18:56 ... Bruce asks Kevin about his fellow ESPN Radio analyst PJ Carlesimo and some of their adventures in dining and how the coach makes sure food for the team is a priority and everyone on the radio team is properly fed. 22:32 ... Bruce tells a quick story about another "old school" coach, the late Paul Silas who worked with Bruce at ESPN and was like PJ in that he always picked up the tab for dinner for the crew because coaches knew that armies travel on their stomachs. 23:03 ... Ross asks Kevin about the mysterious Twitter/X fan "Yanos," and gets a hilarious response. 24:14 .... The LA Clippers have made some very strange moves as they get ready to move into their new building next season and Kevin is not optimistic about their chances for the upcoming season. 27:17 ... What do we make of the crosstown Lakers? Can LeBron continues playing at such a high level as he approaches his 40th birthday? Kevin says his days of winning championships are gone. 29:15 ... World B feels the Lakers have been good, but the conference is really tough and Anthony Davis & LeBron may not be physically up to the task of winning big in the postseason. 31:45 ... What about the Denver Nuggets? Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray, as always, are the indispensable guys. Russell Westbrook and his aggressive style will work well off the bench for Denver next season. 35:18 ... Bruce tees Kevin up for a nice rant on Evan Mobley's max contract. 36:52 ... Jalen Brunson left money on the table on his recent contract and while it was a great gesture on Brunson's part, there could be unintended consequences. 38:44 ... Brunson's move puts the pressure on the Knicks front office to use the money to bring in more talent. 39:39 ... Kevin thinks Brunson may have gotten some grief from the Players Association over his act of generosity. 41:34 ... Bruce wants to know how Klay Thompson will fit in with the Mavs ... Kevin thinks Klay will help Luka Doncic learn how to win and he also likes the potential of Dereck Lively. 45:45 ... The guys discuss NBA executive Pat Williams and what he meant to the NBA and also to the Orlando Magic, the franchise he co-founded. Williams passed away this past week at the age of 84. 48:27 ... Ross thanks Kevin for joining us and says goodbye TRT 49:29

New Zealand Cricket Players Association boss Heath Mills is adamant athletes will keep having to choose between club and country until the global calendar is aligned. Kane Williamson has joined a growing list in turning down a central contract to pursue the overseas T20 dollar but will still be available to a large extent for the Black Caps across all formats. Mills says each national board and T20 league design their own schedules independently, rather than collaborating. He told Mike Hosking that until they come together and agree on a programme that makes sense, then players are going to have to make these sort of decisions. Highlights: The Guardians have had a hot start to the season, with their bullpen playing a key role in their success. Jose Ramirez sure is something. Stephen Vogt has shown strong managerial skills and has a knack for interviews. There is a debate about the increase in Tommy John surgeries, with the Players Association blaming the pitch clock and MLB pointing to velocity and spin rates as the main factors. Evidence suggests that the pitch clock has not had a significant impact on injuries, and other factors like velocity and spin rates may be more influential. The emphasis on throwing harder and increasing spin rates may be contributing to the increase in injuries among pitchers in baseball. The Cavaliers' recent struggles and player injuries are a cause for concern, and it remains to be seen if they can regain their form in time for the playoffs. Playing a game in Brazil may not be ideal for the Cleveland Browns due to the additional travel and potential distractions during the season. A review of two different Panini football card boxes: 2023 Phoenix and 2023 Absolute. I share my experience opening and examining these boxes, offering insights into their contents, prices, and overall value. As a statistician, Dr. Beckett addresses the misconception of loaded or conspiratorial boxes, emphasizing that while the probability of getting a great card is unlikely, someone will eventually get it due to chance, rather than any special advantages. He also mentions the allure and fun of box breaks and acknowledges that his own preference lies somewhere between low-end and high-end boxes. We discusses various aspects related to the pricing of boxes and the factors that contribute to their costs and sale prices. He explains that the price of a box is determined based on the costs associated with its production, the history and brand value of the product, and the assets included within the box, such as autographs, game-used material, and special treatments on inserts. Dr. Beckett also argues against the notion that the price is determined solely by the cost of cardboard and ink, clarifying that serial numbers and rarity themselves do not significantly impact the price. Throughout Dr. Beckett delves into the card collecting experience, sharing his thoughts on brand continuity, package design, player images, and the importance of dual licensing from the Players Association and the leagues. He reflects on the challenges faced by companies in titling and categorizing their products, especially in relation to the years indicated on the cards. He mentions the trend of increasing the number of cards, creating a wide range of parallels, and explains that market research supports demand for more variations of player cards. Dr. Beckett also touches on the difficulty of tracking and valuing numerous card variations, particularly those associated with less popular or obscure players. He expresses gratitude to Panini for their contribution to the growth of the basketball hobby and acknowledges the need for responsible growth in the sports card industry. The script concludes with Dr. Beckett revealing that his personal preference leaned towards the Phoenix football box due to its larger number of cards, appealing design, and potential inclusion of a player that he may consider displaying on his wall. However, he acknowledges the subjective nature of individual preferences in card collecting and emphasizes the importance of enjoying the hobby, opening boxes, and finding joy in the process.

Everyone will learn something from this episode. Last week, I had the honor of speaking with Jean Lee Batrus. Jean is the Executive Director of the MLB-MLBPA Youth Development Foundation (YDF). YDF is a joint initiative by Major League Baseball and the Players Association to support efforts that focus on improving the caliber, effectiveness and availability of amateur baseball and softball programs across the United States and internationally. From local-based programs to the Hank Aaron Invitational and HBCU Swingman Classic, the foundation helps make youth baseball and softball more accessible – creating economic opportunities, strengthening communities, and building character – on and off the field.I spoke to Jean about her role at YDF, and how they strategically change communities through access to baseball. It's a fascinating conversation. Everyone interested in revitalizing a community through baseball or even just offering baseball access to kids that don't have local stability should tune in from start to finish. Please rater and review this episode. Share it with a friend, and leave a comment. Your support goes a long way to growing the Black Baseball Mixtape.
