This is the second half of my recent conversation with author Deborah Phillips whose fascinating new book is titled AND THIS IS MY FRIEND SANDY — SANDY WILSON'S THE BOY FRIEND, LONDON THEATRE AND GAY CULTURE. If you missed the previous episode you may want to catch up with that before listening to this one. The Boyfriend is one of the most popular and successful British musicals of all time. On the previous episode Deborah Phillips shared with us how its creator Sandy Wilson grew up as a musical theater obsessed kid whose idols were Noel Coward, Ivor Novello, and Binky Beaumont — the three dynamic gay theater artists who dominated London's West End in the 1930s and 40s. She also described London's vibrant but clandestine gay theatrical subculture of the early 1950s out of which Sandy Wilson and The Boyfriend emerged. And we even heard a bit about the secret gay language of chorus boys and sailors called “Polari,” and the hilarious BBC radio series, Round The Horne, that introduced Polari to millions of listeners in the mid-1960s, even though most of those listeners had no idea what is was, or understood its connections to gay culture. All of that was, of course, happening at a time when you could be sent to prison for being homosexual. Deborah and I pick up our conversation just as Sandy Wilson is about to launch the first production of The Boyfriend at the private theater club, The Players Theatre, where it became a major hit and quickly moved to the West End. We then go on to discuss London's other major hit musical of 1952, Julian Slade's SALAD DAYS. Those two shows — both set in the 1920s — created nearly as much excitement as Queen Elizabeth's coronation that same year. In this episode you will hear a clip from Round the Horne featuring two very camp characters named “Julian & Sandy” (inspired by the two songwriters) who pepper their dialogue with Polari words and phrases, and whose catch phrase inspired the title of Deborah Phillip's book. That original West End production of The Boyfriend ran for five years. Meanwhile, an American production opened on Broadway in 1954 and became a major hit in spite of Wilson's objections to how it was redirected for Broadway. 18 years later, in 1972, a film version of The Boyfriend was released, directed by Ken Russell, that Wilson loathed. Wilson went on to create several highly anticipated subsequent musicals including The Buccaneer, Valmouth, and the sequel to The Boyfriend — Divorce Me Darling. None of them, however, were able to achieve the same kind acclaim and popularity as The Boyfriend. Phillips also shares some fascinating stories of several other high-profile projects that got away from Sandy Wilson and went on to legendary success with other songwriters. My guest this week is author Deborah Phillips whose new book is titled: AND THIS IS MY FRIEND SANDY — SANDY WILSON'S THE BOY FRIEND, LONDON THEATRE AND GAY CULTURE. Sandy Wilson's The Boyfriend — for which he wrote the book, music, & lyrics — is one of the most successful British musicals of all time. It emerged in 1952 out of London's secretive but vibrant gay theatrical subculture, at a time when you could be sent to prison for being homosexual. By the following year both The Boyfriend and Sandy Wilson were the toast of London's West End, and created nearly as much excitement as Queen Elizabeth's coronation that same year. That original West End production ran for five years. Meanwhile, a hit American version of The Boyfriend opened on Broadway in 1954 and made a star out of Julie Andrews. The show was revived on Broadway in 1970 and made a star of Sandy Duncan, and two years later an ill-conceived film version was released, starring Twiggy and Tommy Tune and directed by Ken Russell. Despite all of this, prior to this book, very little has been written about Sandy Wilson. Deborah Phillips, who is Professor of Literature and Cultural History at the University of Brighton, is the first researcher to delve into Wilson's extensive archives out of which she has created an captivating portrait of Wilson as a both a key figure in post-war British theatre and the era's gay culture. This book and interview introduced me to a number of fascinating subjects I had never encountered before including the hilarious BBC radio series, Round The Horne, that inspired the book's title; the history of London's Players Theatre; and the secret gay language, Polari. Exploring all that sent me into several amazing internet rabbit holes and I will be posting articles and video clips that I found there in the Broadway Nation FaceBook Group. This episode is made possible in part through the generous support of Broadway Nation Patron Club members Anne Welsh, Chris Moad, and Bob Braun. Become A PATRON of Broadway Nation! East West Players is an Asian American theatre organization in Los Angeles, founded in 1965. As the nation's first professional Asian American theatre organization, East West Players continues to produce works and educational programs that give voice to the Asian-Pacific American experience today. According to the theatre's website "East West Players' current home is in the upper 3 levels of the Union Center for the Arts in the northwestern end of the Little Tokyo Historic District. The company had spent the previous 32 years since its founding in a 99-seat theatre in Silver Lake before moving to the new David Henry Hwang Theatre in the Union Center for the Arts in 1998. The Union Center for the Arts was formerly Union Church, the combined home of three Japanese American congregations, was completed in 1923. With the onset of World War II, it was in front of this building that residents of the district joined the residents of Terminal Island, whose community had been razed 48 hours after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Residents lined up with a single suitcase allowance awaiting transportation to join 10,000 people sent to the War Relocation Center in Manzanar in 1942. Most of those transported to the internment camps lost all of their property and were unable to return to living in their old community after the war, scattering the population throughout the city. During the war, the building was used as a community center for African Americans arriving from the deep south in search of work in wartime industry as part of the ‘Great Migration'. The neighborhood had some of the only housing in the city that did not have restrictive housing covenants based on color, and quickly became highly populated. Three years into the war, the neighborhood was renamed Bronzeville, and was home to crowded conditions and ‘breakfast clubs' – jazz clubs that were known to stay open until dawn. In 1943, a part of the ‘Zoot Suit Riots' spread into the area. At the close of 1945 the Japanese Americans gradually began re-establishing a community center, where Little Tokyo remains a very diverse part of central Los Angeles. The building located on Judge John Aiso Street was damaged during the 1994 Northridge earthquake, leaving it unusable. The Little Tokyo Service Center Community Development Corporation completed a multi-million dollar renovation of the building in 1998 to house three arts organizations – the East West Players, Visual Communications, and LA Artcore. Mexican-born musical multi-hyphenate Jaime Lozano sat down for a heart to heart with Feinstein's/54 Below's Director of Marketing, Nella Vera, ahead of his upcoming concert. The two discussed Jaime's incredible journey to NYC, how he found a chosen “familia” in the theater, and how Hamilton's Alex Lacaimore changed his life one afternoon at a performance of In The Heights. Jaime Lozano is considered by Lin-Manuel Miranda as the “next big thing” on Broadway. His recent productions include The Yellow Brick Road (for with he wrote music and lyrics with Tommy Newman, book by Mando Alvarado), which premiered Off-Broadway in 2011 and was followed by a successful national tour and also Children of Salt; A New Latin Musical (book and lyrics by Lauren Epsenhart) which made its New York City debut in 2016 as part of the New York Musical Festival and won the "Best of Fest" Production Award. Recently, Jaime's song cycle, A Never-Ending Line, a collaboration with 9 female lyricists, had its World Premiere in Paris, France as part of the concert series “Broadway au Carré” at the Comédie Nation Theatre. It had its Spanish language World Premiere in Mexico followed by an Off-Broadway run at The Players Theatre here in NYC. His others works include Con Amor…Isa Colibrí, Estocolmo, Savage, Present Perfect - A musical in broken English, among many other works. In 2015, Jaime and his wife, Mexican actress and singer Florencia Cuenca, created a jazz project called "The New Standards,” an album of contemporary musical theatre songs accompanied by jazz arrangements. Written by Jaime and Jesús Altamira, it has performed at prominent venues in New York City, Mexico, and across Latin America. He is making his Feinstein's/54 Below debut with a concert full of immigrant stories and songs written in collaboration with some of the most exciting Latinx musical theatre writers celebrating the Hispanic Heritage Month. Waiting for Places is a podcast highlighting stage managers in the flyover states. Episode 14 features Dr. Jennifer Leigh Sears Scheier. She is a freelance AEA stage manager and recently completed her PhD dissertation at the University of Illinois. Her dissertation, “The Quest for Professionalization: A 20th Century Cautionary Tale for United States Stage Managers,” focused on reclaiming stage management history while investigating the field's current challenges through a historical lens. Her past stage management credits include: Illinois Shakespeare Festival, Knoxville Opera, La Jolla Playhouse, Lamb's Players Theatre, Long Beach Opera, San Diego Repertory Theatre, and Tennessee Repertory Theatre. Editor's Note: The interview implied Dr. Scheier was the only person with a PhD in Stage Management. This is incorrect. Dr. Tracey Catherine Cattell recently got her PhD on British Stage Management history, looking at British promptbook notations. Sue Fenty, current faculty at DePaul University has a PhD from an Australian University and her dissertation was on modern day stage management and working Internationally.

Now Kaisha has built an incredible network of social media followers who engage with Kaisha and her creative endeavors on Tik Tok.
