Welcome everyone! You're in for some deep nourishment today. Our conversation is with Ren Dara Santiago. We cover so many heart centered things in this conversation. We talk about how to dispel narratives through truly seeing someone's heart, building families, her work as a playwright, and so much more. Ren is a Big Sister first and foremost! Every space carries Beanie, Butchie, and Kaying. This Fila-Rican playwright was born in the Bronx, raised in Yonkers and Harlem at intersections of Coded Streets and Bodega Avenues. She's proud of her history and shares in the practice of uplifting the wisdom that comes from her community. From the originators and generators. From creators thriving despite the exploitation of our cultures, loved ones, systematic debts, and geographies. Ren writes stories that activate our potential for deep loving, for brave loving, for healing, for the hustlers. For people that work hard. For the real heroes, who deserve their lives to be honored in stories; complex, expansive, simple and great. Theater should give communities room to dream. To honor the unknowable, conjured by theater-makers of resilient lineages, offering us the opportunity to shift the limits of possibility. Ren is currently working with Rattlestick Playwrights Theater as the showrunner for the MTA Radio Plays, launching December 13th; and commissions with En Garde Arts, The Drama Club NYC, The Theatre Co, and New York Rep. Ren teaches playwriting at the National Theater Institute, MCC Youth Company, Williams College, and Williamstown Community Works. She is a founding member of Middle Voice at Rattlestick, a member of Rising Phoenix Rep. She's the recipient of the TOW Foundation 2020 Residency at Rattlestick, Rising Phoenix Rep's Cornelia Street American Playwriting Award, and the MCC Alumni Award. She's developed work with The Bushwick Starr, Cherry Lane Theatre, Clubbed Thumb, Gingold Theatrical Group, LAByrinth, The Lark Play Development Center, MCC Theater, Ojai Playwrights Conference, Rattlestick Playwrights Theater, Rising Phoenix Rep, and SPACE on Ryder Farm. www.rendarasantiago.com @rendsanti, @rattlestickny --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/britt-dorazio/support

In this episode of The Plot, I'm joined by playwright and journalist Winter Miller. Miller is a widely produced playwright and has also written extensively for The New York Times. In the mid-2000's she traveled with Nicholas Kristof to the Sudan border, for research on what eventually became her best-known play In Darfur. In Darfur premiered at The Public Theater, followed by a standing room only performance at their 1800-seat Delacorte Theater in Central Park, a first for a play by a woman. She was a founding member of the Obie Award-winning playwriting collective 13P and has taught widely at universities, venues like New York Theatre Workshop and the Sundance Institute, as well as refugee camps in Northern Uganda and Palestine. In 2016, her play Spare Rib was read at an event, presented by Gloria Steinem, Samantha Bee, and others, honoring Christian OBGYN and abortion provider Dr. Willie Porter, and raised $20,000 in one night for southern abortion clinics.Miller's newest play No One is Forgotten is about two women imprisoned under unknown circumstances. It was inspired by the many recent stories of journalists captured abroad and runs Off-Broadway at Rattlestick Playwrights Theater from July 8 to July 27. In this talk, she discusses the current geopolitical climate, what we can do to keep journalists safe, and how she ran a particularly successful Kickstarter campaign to make the play possible. (One tip: it helps to have a very cooperative cat!)If you would you like to help promote a safer world for journalists, consider supporting Amnesty International, Reporters Without Borders, or The Committee to Protect Journalists. Lucy Thurber is getting an honor not usually granted to mid-career playwrights: a cycle of five of her plays is being mounted in New York City. The cycle, called “The Hill Town Plays,” centers around one character, a smart young heroine struggling to form an identity independent from her western Massachusetts upbringing.  The first play "Scarcity," follows the character at age 11, while the final play, "Stay," focuses on a woman in her 30s. Keep in mind, the main characters in each of these five plays don't always share the same name. Rattlestick Playwrights Theater is behind this deep dive into Thurber’s oeuvre, which continues through September 28. New York Times theater critic Charles Isherwood has seen the plays and tells us what to expect from the performers and the world they create on their various stages

Our guests -- Jonathan Bank, Artistic Director of The Mint Theater, Sarah Benson, Artistic Director of Soho Rep., Susan Bernfield, Artistic Director of New Georges and David Van Asselt, Artistic Director of Rattlestick Playwrights Theater -- all share the distinction of running theatres that are quite different from Broadway...venues with 99 seats or under. They discuss their mission statements and how each of their companies got started; making sure they are able to balance new voices in playwriting with more established writers when choosing and presenting plays; how, instead of competing with one another, their companies serve as resources for each other; the wealth of material, and talent, available to them; who their base audiences are and marketing strategies for broadening that base; funding challenges, particularly in difficult financial times; the pros and cons of subscriptions for their companies; how pricing structure for their smaller theatres affects the bottom line; and their goals for expansion beyond their current theatre size.
