Netflix operates a flexible hybrid model where teams decide how they work rather than following a companywide remote policy. That creates significant variation across the organisation. Technical roles such as engineering and data often have strong remote flexibility, while other roles remain closer to office hubs. In this episode, Alex explores how this selective approach to remote work reflects a broader hiring strategy used by many large companies. Remote flexibility often appears where talent is scarce and competition is intense. But as more businesses adopt fully remote operating models, companies that treat remote work as a selective perk may find it harder to compete for global talent.Looking for Remote Work?Click here remoteworklife.io to access a private beta list of remote jobs in sales, marketing, and strategy — plus get podcasts, real-world tips and business insights from founders, CEOs, and remote leaders. subscribe to my free newsletter Connect on LinkedIn

On this episode of the America's Work Force Union Podcast, we cover two major stories of workers building power—from the animation studios of Hollywood to the statehouse in Iowa. Segment 1: The Organizing Wave in Animation DreamWorks Animation remote feature production workers and the production team behind the TED animated TV series have voted to unionize, joining The Animation Guild (IATSE Local 839) and the Editors Guild (IATSE Local 700). Organizer Allison Smartt, TED: The Animated Series Color Coordinator Kelly Simmons, and Organizer Ben Speight join the show to discuss this major victory. They explain how the pandemic exposed a "zip code barrier" where remote workers were denied union protections simply for moving out of LA County. The group also discusses: The push to end the "two-tier" system that separates production staff from artists. Why establishing guardrails for Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a critical part of their fight. How industry consolidation is driving more workers to organize for job security. Segment 2: Why Union Members Must Run for Office Dan Gosa, a third-generation member of Insulators Local 81 and current Iowa State Representative, joins the show to discuss his re-election campaign. Gosa serves as President of the Quad City Federation of Labor and brings a "kitchen-table" perspective to the legislature. Gosa details the challenges facing Iowa's working families, including the drastic cut to unemployment benefits (from 26 weeks down to 16) and the need for "Responsible Bidder" laws to track bad-actor contractors who misclassify workers. He argues that when union members sit at the decision-making table, they can stop policies that strip funding from essential local services and ensure working-class issues aren't treated as political games. This episode dives into the side of moving abroad most people overlook: the psychological shift. Siddartha breaks down the four ways people respond to a new culture—and why true integration, not assimilation, is what actually leads to long-term fulfillment. They explore the hidden crossroads many expats hit around year two and again years later, moments that quietly determine whether life abroad thrives or unravels. The takeaway is clear: moving countries will change you—having the right framework helps you turn that change into growth instead of burnout.

Send us a textA hard truth set the tone for the new year: a fatal accident in Nigeria and the stark reminder that infrastructure and governance shape lives. I share why that grief paused my urge to create and how honesty, not forced optimism, can be the smartest way to start January. From there, we move straight into the UK job market, where rising employer costs, higher NI, and a punishing tax reality are shrinking vacancies and closing adverts early. Job hopping has stalled; job hugging is the new survival skill. And no, AI didn't replace everyone misfired attempts exposed the gap between hype and capability, while smart teams now use AI to augment real work. When growth outside slows, the inside strategy matters. I walk through how I anchor development to manager-owned objectives, build a feedback folder that proves outcomes, and keep a burn folder that captures patterns of harm. That combo turned a workplace bully into an unlikely conduit for opportunity: I secured sign-off, delivered for another team, and gained high-stakes exposure. He still doesn't like me, but he respects me an equation that matters when you're a Black Woman navigating power, perception, and limited tolerance for your tears. Respect lasts longer than likability; receipts speak when rooms turn cold.We also zoom out to geopolitics shaping markets and risk: Nigeria's insecurity, pressure across the Sahel, and the power play around Venezuela's oil. These forces affect hiring cycles, investor sentiment, and the anxiety many of us feel about timing a move. So I'm easing into 2026 with deliberate pace, quarter by quarter goals, renewed focus on public speaking and subject expertise, and a commitment to consistency on TikTok, blending the world of work with practical fashion and “wear your wardrobe” thinking. If the market says hold, use the hold to sharpen your edge, negotiate the package that actually pays, and make your progress unavoidable.Sponsorships - Email me: hello@toyatalks.comTikTok: toya_washington Twitter: @toya_w (#ToyaTalksPodcast) Snapchat: @toyawashington Instagram: @toya_washington & @toya_talks https://toyatalks.com/ Music (Intro and Outro) Written and created by Nomadic Star Stationary Company: Sistah Scribble Instagram: @sistahscribble Website: www.sistahscribble.com Email: hello@sistahscribble.com

Some academics go into the office every day; some are rarely ever seen on campus. Is one way better than the other? Who better to ask than the brilliant Ella Hafermalz who spent her career on the topic of remote work and its implications for belonging, community, collaboration, and performance. She points out that academia has always been a distributed and flexible profession. Researchers need flexibility and freedom to figure out their own best way of solving problems and doing their work, some of which may mean sitting at a desk, but maybe also involve lab or field work. On the other hand, pure freedom for individual academics makes a university nothing more than a collection of hired guns without a true community. Send us a textEver wondered why that mentor relationship isn't yielding results? The harsh truth is that many mentoring relationships fail to deliver actual career advancement especially for Black women. In this candid episode, we unpack why traditional mentorship often falls short and what true strategic mentoring should look like. It's not about inspirational coffee chats or vague encouragement; it's about someone with genuine influence opening doors that would otherwise remain closed to you. As I share from personal experience, "A mentor without contacts or influence is just a friend with opinions."We also tackle the growing trend of companies mandating three-day office returns and how to negotiate terms that work for your life. Through my own negotiation story, I demonstrate how standing firm on your non-negotiables can actually work in your favour, even in a tough job market. Remember if employers want your talents badly enough, they'll meet your terms. The episode also explores how neurodivergent individuals are protected under the Equality Act as a disability class, offering important legal insights for workplace accommodations. Plus, I share a personal story about setting boundaries with new friendships and the importance of protecting your kindness from those who would take advantage.Between renovation chaos and career revelations, this episode delivers practical wisdom for navigating work politics, boundary-setting, and strategic relationship building. Send us a textEver notice how Black women are expected to win quietly? In this powerful return episode, I dive into the recent tennis court confrontation between Taylor Townsend and Jelena Ostapenko that perfectly captures what many of us experience daily – being told we're "low class" or "uneducated" when we succeed, then being praised for our composure when we don't react to blatant disrespect. The tennis incident serves as a mirror to workplace dynamics where Black women face impossible standards. We're expected to take on additional responsibilities without complaint or compensation, to dim our light when it shines too brightly, and to apologise for achievements that would be celebrated in others. I share personal experiences of being shamed for displaying success or enjoying luxury items – what I now recognise as the systematic policing of Black joy, a pattern so pervasive it deserves to be studied as a psychological phenomenon.I'm thrilled to announce my new venture, Sister Scribble – a stationery brand celebrating Black creativity through vibrant, 90s hip-hop inspired designs. After finding conventional stationery boring and disconnected from my experience, I've created a line that honors our voices and cultural heritage while providing tools for creative expression. The Origin Edit launches in October 2025, coinciding with UK Black History Month. The episode also tackles current events including immigration policies, the weaponisation of national symbols, and how Christianity is sometimes used to create hierarchies among women based on marital status. I close with strategic advice for a listener facing the all-too-common dilemma of being asked to take on senior responsibilities without appropriate recognition or compensation.Ready to stop apologising for your success? Listen now, and remember: you are not here to be manageable. Your wins are only threatening to fragile egos – to the rest of us, they're testimony.Referenced in podcast:On Becoming by Toke Makinwahttps://www.amazon.co.uk/Becoming-Toke-Makinwa-ebook/dp/B01NAAEILQ/ref=sr_1_1?crid=22QOYVTIK8XAJ&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.I2kHpBBav2v9SW3ObtJCNw.dR98_87UWyYR5SicIjHVRdapL-tOgl9Zf3WzsDxrtzY&dib_tag=se&keywords=toke+makinwa&qid=1756854169&sprefix=toke+makinwa%2Caps%2C111&sr=8-1Sponsorships - Email me: hello@toyatalks.com Cc: toyawashington10@gmail.comTikTok: toya_washington Twitter: @toya_w (#ToyaTalksPodcast) Snapchat: @toyawashington Instagram: @toya_washington & @toya_talks www.toyatalks.comhttps://toyatalks.com/Music (Intro and Outro) Written and created by Nomadic Star Stationary Company - Instagram @sistahscribble Website: www.sistahscribble.com COMING SOON....
