The Automotive Restoration Technology program at McPherson College was established in 1976, and since its inception the curriculum has included the study of the technical and social history of the automobile. Given this experience, Yohn addresses how McPherson might inform teaching the specialized field of motor racing. He will begin by giving an overview of the McPherson automotive history curriculum and conclusions about substantive content choices and best teaching practices. By examining the comparative scope of automotive history and motor racing history, Yohn will present areas of substantial overlap and differentiation. Finally, he will present suggestions for curriculum and teaching practices. Participants will be requested to share their reflections on the following question: What 3 key topics should every motor racing historian understand? (Part 1) Ken Yohn is a social scientist keenly interested in how the automobile shapes our lives. With a Ph.D. in political science and postdoctoral work in history and economics, Yohn has held faculty positions at universities in Japan, Germany, France, and Poland, including a sabbatical as scholar in residence at the University of Science and Technology in Lille, France. For the past 25 years Yohn has been teaching at McPherson College in Kansas, where he is currently chair of the history and politics department. (Part 2) Kristie Sojka earned her BA in History from Wichita State University and her MLIS from Kent State University. She has worked in a variety of roles in Kansas libraries for the past 13 years. Sojka is currently entering her third year as the director of library services at Miller Library McPherson College. Her responsibilities include providing library and research services, support, and instruction to the entire campus community. She also oversees the two special collections located within Miller Library: the Brethren and College Archives and the Paul Russell and Company Center for Automotive Research, which houses the special automotive materials collection. Sojka is currently serving as vice president of the College and University Libraries Section of the Kansas Library Association. The Paul Russell and Company Center for Automotive Research housed within Miller Library at McPherson College currently holds over 5,000 automotive related titles. This presentation will consider the benefits and challenges of curating a special library collection and archives, which supports automotive restoration education. The presenter will discuss the types of materials currently available to researchers, the varying processes of obtaining materials, and options for organizing the collection. One of preservation's biggest challenges is climate change. On this week's PreserveCast, we are talking with Benjamin Curran, a 2021 recipient of the Harrison Goodall Fellowship. Curran's project intended to explore the viability of constructing low-cost open-source sensors for the purpose of increasing the breadth of communities engaged in self-monitoring their susceptibility to sea level rise. Join us in talking with Curran on how his project unfolded and what lessons it holds for preservationists across the nation. Benjamin works as the Historic Trades Curriculum Developer at Preservation Maryland, where he designs and develops multimedia educational content available online. Curran is the former Department Head of STC's Historic Preservation and Restoration Program and the Director of STC's Center for Traditional Craft. He was the lead faculty instructor for Historic Preservation at Edgecombe Community College in Taraboro, NC. While working in the remote sensing lab at the University of New Hampshire Earth System Research Center in Durham, N.H., he was a co-investigator for research funded by a National Geographic Society/Waitt Foundation grant investigating the impacts of sea level rise on saltwater intrusion for coastal heritage sites. Benjamin received his bachelor's degree in Biochemistry from the University of New Hampshire and his graduate degree from Plymouth State University where he studied Historic Preservation and Education. His family was happy together. When he was 10 Robert's family moved to Arkansas, and at age 12 he started hanging with the wrong crowd. He saw the cool kids drinking, smoking, and partying so that's what he did. Then he was introduced to meth. After a couple of years of meth use his life was in chaos. For this episode ofaBlogtoWatch Weekly, our usual trio of hosts, Ariel, Rick, and David are joined by Cam from the TriWatches Podcast. To kick off the show, our hosts discuss how Geneva is finally going to have its first pre-owned luxury watches event, and ponder what the Swiss version of a pre-owned watches show might look like, given Switzerland's long-standing reluctance to embrace the secondary market. From there, the conversation shifts to the truth behind the decrease in pre-owned luxury watch prices, and how this recent change is only really allocated to the mega-hype watches that were trading hands for values significantly above their original brand new retail prices. Given that an increasing number of manufacturers are entering the pre-on space themselves, our quartet of hosts tries to answer the question as to whether or not there might ever come a time when we see the entire pre-owned luxury watch industry shift towards an in-house format. After discussing all things related to the pre-owned luxury watch industry, our hosts turn their attention to the new factory restoration program that G-Shock is offering for select vintage collectible models, and how this limited-time program shows a commitment to the brand's heritage and its dedicated collectors. With the final word said on older watches, Ariel, Rick, David, and Cam turned their attention to new watches, and up first is the all-new Speedmaster X-33 Marstimer from Omega. After discussing whether or not the X-33 platform can still be considered a class-leading astronaut's tool, our hosts decide to discuss the new Shinola Mechanic watches and whether or not these new models represent a new enthusiast-driven direction for the brand. Closing out this week's episode is a review of the new Linear Series 1 Tourbillon from Hautlence, and a quick discussion of how this decidedly modern and funky brand fits in with the rest of the various timepieces that occupy a similar space within the industry. As always, Ariel has an exciting upcoming schedule with a dinner for Hublot and a trip to Sicily with Jacob & Co., and there will also be special edition episodes of aBlogtoWatch Weekly coming down the pipeline, with the first one featuring an inside look at Bulgari watches.Show Notes2:27https://www.ablogtowatch.com/ariels-thoughts-it-should-be-no-surprise-that-recently-inflated-watch-prices-are-down/9:21https://www.ablogtowatch.com/casio-announces-factory-restoration-program-for-select-vintage-g-shock-watches/28.13Last Weeks Show This Week29:33https://www.ablogtowatch.com/omega-unveils-the-speedmaster-x-33-marstimer-watch/37:53https://www.ablogtowatch.com/hands-on-debut-shinola-mechanic-watches/46:08https://www.ablogtowatch.com/hands-on-hautlence-linear-series-1-tourbillon-watch/We'd love to hear from you with feedback or suggestions for future show topics or guests. Today we're talking with Chris Pollard, a recent graduate from Victory Mission's Restoration Program. Chris started getting in trouble at a young age. He grew up feeling insecure, searching for a place where he would be accepted. He found himself hanging around people who ran the streets and he did whatever he could to fit in with the group. Soon it became part of who he was. He spent the majority of his teenage and adult years in prison. Eventually he realized he was in too deep. He was stranded in Kansas City, hiding from people who wished him harm. For the first time in his life, his mom was scared of him. That's when Chris knew he needed to change. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Follow Victory Mission on Facebook and Instagram: Facebook: @victorymission Instagram: @victory.mission

Jon's drinking habit escalated gradually. It started as just going out on weekends, having fun with old friends, and maybe having a drink every once in a while. Then having a little bit more. Then it was binge drinking on the weekends, but not during the week. Eventually Jon's drinking escalated into a daily habit. He was miserable: sunk down spiritually and mentally. But now Jon is a graduate of Victory's Restoration Program. He's walked through the rebuilding process and is now reaping the benefits of a restored life. Whether you are new to the outdoors, or have spent your entire life or dedicated your career to it - you should have an understanding of one of the greatest success stories out there today: America's Wildlife Restoration Program. This program has pumped more than $14 BILLION into wildlife management, restoration of species, research and education, and public access to it. It all began in the late 1800s/early 1900s when market hunting was going on, and there were no limits to the numbers of wildlife being taken through hunting and trapping. A group of people came together {HUNTERS} and for the FIRST time in history, and the ONLY time in history - asked to be taxed on the items they use to conserve the resources they love, for future generations. In 1937 the Pittman-Robertson Act was passed into legislation, creating a federal excise tax on firearms, ammunition, and archery equipment. At the end of each year, these excise tax dollars are put into a formula and given back to the states to only be used for wildlife management, education, and other specific activities to be used to benefit wildlife. Not only do these excise tax dollars benefit the game animals, but non-game animals as well who are also living in the same habitat and range benefitting from these management practices in place. It is all of our responsibility to carry on the legacy of this historic and successful program into the future. We hold both natural and financial resources in trust for America's hunters and shooters, and carry it forward to the recovery of wildlife species for future generations.

The Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) Denver Post and Philadelphia Post along with the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) are hosting a series of webinars based on talks given at recent Design and Construction Issues at Hazardous Waste Sites (DCHWS) Symposiums. The mission of the DCHWS symposiums is to facilitate an interactive engagement between professionals from government and the private sector related to relevant and topical issues affecting applications of engineering and science associated with cleaning up hazardous waste sites. The symposiums also serve as a platform to facilitate the exchange of information, encourage dialogue, share experiences, and build and enhance communication among design and construction professionals. This session will discuss the investigation and remediation of impacted media which has been ongoing at a DoD facility in North Carolina for more than 25 years. Since 2010, the environmental restoration program at the facility has been proactively optimized through the implementation of innovative technologies, focused treatment, and well-defined exit strategies to minimize remediation timeframes, reduce life-cycle costs, and to move away from long-standing pump and treat remedies-in-place and passive long-term monitoring programs. Technologies have included in situ aerobic bioremediation, in situ chemical oxidation, enhanced reductive dechlorination, air sparging, biobarriers, recirculation, bioaugmentation, and subgrade biogeochemical reactors for the treatment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and chlorinated volatile organic compounds in a variety of hydrogeologic settings around the facility. This presentation will discuss the technologies and various application approaches, lessons learned, mass removal and resulting reduction in time to site closure, optimization, and overall cost savings for the restoration program. "We have a treasure. The buildings here are fragile and susceptible to damage and deterioration. It is our privilege to be able care for them and be able to pass them on to next generations." ~ John Lauber "So many experiences from the people that have come to Holden Village have included a special time on these porches. They in themselves are a sacred space." ~ Chris Gustafson "If you drive through the countryside and see an old barn, in all likelihood, you start recreating a story of what was in that barn, or why that barn was there, or what was going on at that period of time. It becomes almost a story within a visual. Wouldn't it be nice to leave many of these treasures for future people?" ~ Harrison Goodall Dr. Harrison Goodall has over forty-eight years of experience with historic structures and facilities management and nearly sixty years of experience in training and education throughout the country. Harrison has been involved in preserving hundreds, if not thousands of historic structures around the nation. A 2016 award from the National Park Service documented that Goodall completed over 135 volunteer historic preservation projects in 55 national parks. The model focuses on various tasks to be completed to maintain good individual and relational recovery. He does this by meeting with his therapist along with his partner and her therapist. Every couple of weeks we meet to talk about how people like you are managing projects both big and small. Our guests include speakers, authors, and trainers, but also those who are right there in the trenches, getting the stuff of project management done on a daily basis. I'm your host, Nick Walker. And before we get to today's guest, we are thrilled to acknowledge the return of one of the founding fathers of this podcast, Andy Crowe, back from, well, I guess the project of a lifetime. Welcome back. ANDY CROWE: Thank you so much, yeah, we've taken a short break. The boat, which is named Gratitude, is in Grenada right now. So we've sailed it from Florida, all the way down through the Caribbean, down to Grenada, which is really close to South America, and are waiting out hurricane season there. NICK WALKER: Well, we're going to talk with you more in detail about your adventure in the next podcast but... ANDY CROWE: Great. Meet Dr. Powell NICK WALKER: So let's meet our guest, Professor William A. Powell is the director of the American Chestnut Research and Restoration Program. Dr. Powell received his Ph.D. in 1986 at Utah State University, studying ways to bring back the American chestnut tree, a tree that became functionally extinct after being devastated by a fungus from Asia. Approximately 90 percent of the nearly four billion trees were killed by blight. In 1989 he became a faculty member at the State University of New York's College of Environmental Science and Forestry at Syracuse, New York. There he began collaborating with his colleague, Dr. Charles Maynard, and the American Chestnut Foundation, researching methods to develop a tree resistant to the blight. He's worked for the last three decades to reintroduce the American chestnut to the wild, and their efforts are succeeding. Dr. Powell, so great to have you with us, welcome to Manage This. DR. BILL POWELL: Thank you. NICK WALKER: So let's start off the conversation by learning more about your career path and how you became passionate about the American chestnut tree. DR. BILL POWELL: So like most people, when I was younger, I actually hadn't heard about the American chestnut, you know, it's been gone for a while. But when I went to graduate school I was very fortunate to get into Dr Neal Van Alfen's lab, and there we worked on the fungus that causes chestnut blight. And that's where I kind of learned the chestnut story, and it's a fascinating story because the American chestnut was once one of the most common trees in the east...
