The fight against climate disinformation in the mediaby Hélène Goyat Interview with Eva Morel, co-founder of Quota Climat(Interview recorded on the 25/02/2025) During her role as parliamentary assistant in France, Eva Morel discovered the role media and journalists play in bringing climate issues to the political agenda. In 2022, she co-founded the organisation called Quota Climat, which works to improve media coverage of environmental topics through national, European, and international advocacy, outreach and data production. “Our freedom of expression shouldn't contradict our right to good information”, Eva Morel (E.M.), co-founder of Quota Climat. “Climate change is a really particular and efficient topic to polarize opinion because it pushes on specific fears and values” (E.M.) "We know for example that people are afraid to lose their individual freedoms, so it is easy for people trying to polarize the debate to push on those specific topics, and this is what they are doing" (E.M.) "These actors are also trying to defame and discredit the voice of environmental defenders, scientists, NGOs, political leaders that are positioned on environmental subjects and propositions." (E.M.) "The difference between facts and opinions should prevent these narratives from emerging because it allows for specific regulations to be put in place. [...] We don't restrict freedom of speech and other values we are attached to, but try to position regulation in this difference." (E.M.) With a background in software engineering, he brings a technical perspective to the study of climate communication, blending data-driven approaches with societal insights. Before beginning his PhD, Alfie spent several years at CliComm working on groundbreaking projects designed to detect and debunk climate change misinformation. This experience deepened his commitment to combating misinformation and inspired his current research into the role of media in shaping public understanding of climate issues. Nowadays, Alfie's PHD research focuses on the automated analysis of climate change coverage in Australian news media. "With misinformation nowadays, it's a lot about creating confusion, so being able to have a clear narrative helps cut through the fog [...] of misleading facts and helps [people] make the informed decisions they need to participate in democracy", Alfie Chadwick (A.C.), PhD student at CliComm “We work as an education and communication program, being able to transfer the science into something that people can understand [...] and make informed decisions and build resilience against mis- and dis-information.”, A.C. Alfie mentions the research done at CliComm, where they looked into who the public trusts in terms of climate messaging. They found these people were usually radio presenters, or weather people (people you would wake up listening to in the morning, or in the evenings when turning your TV on): CliComm looks for ways to partner with them in order to deliver clear climate messaging where it might not have been the case before, and put weather into the context of climate, by giving weather presenters clear graphs and data that is easily understandable by the general public. This Flagship Communications program is planned to operate in six regions across Asia, Europe, UK, the Americas, Africa and Oceania and will train Universities in how to deliver high impact, non-partisan communications on climate to public audiences. IntroductionToday I am joined by Dr. John Cook. Dr. Cook is a Senior Research Fellow with the Melbourne Centre for Behaviour Change at the University of Melbourne. He obtained his PhD at the University of Western Australia, studying the cognitive psychology of climate science denial. His research focus is understanding and countering misinformation about climate change. In 2007, he founded Skeptical Science, a website which won the 2011 Australian Museum Eureka Prize for the Advancement of Climate Change Knowledge and the 2016 Friend of the Planet Award from the National Center for Science Education.John authored the book Cranky Uncle vs. Climate Change, which combines climate science, critical thinking, and cartoons to explain and counter climate misinformation. He also co-authored the college textbooks Climate Change: Examining the Facts and Climate Change Science: A Modern Synthesis, as well as the book Climate Change Denial: Heads in the Sand.In 2013, he published a paper finding a 97% scientific consensus on human-caused global warming, a finding that has been highlighted by President Obama and UK Prime Minister David Cameron.LinksJohn Cook: https://findanexpert.unimelb.edu.au/profile/1028119-john-cookCranky Uncle: https://crankyuncle.com/Skeptical Science: https://skepticalscience.com/Timestamps0:00 - Introduction1:32 - Why can't we ignore misinformation?2:50 - What is the difference between misinformation and disinformation?7:20 - How has climate change denial changed over the past 20 years?8:46 - Who are the sources of misinformation?9:41 - Science denial is not a unique challenge12:55 - Cognitive psychology and its importance in tackling climate change17:55 - What are the drivers of belief in climate change misinformation?21:23 - What are the types of climate change misinformation?28:51 - The persuasiveness of purveyors of misinformation31:51 - How can we counter misinformation?42:48 - F.L.I.C.C. - The climate change misinformation taxonomy43:40 - F - Fake experts44:41 - L - Logical fallacies49:37 - I - Impossible expectations54:50 - C - Cherry-picking59:55 - C - Conspiracy theories1:02:28 - Misinformation breakdown - Example 11:08:07 - Misinformation breakdown - Example 21:11:19 - Misinformation breakdown - Example 31:17:22 - Final takeaways

In this week's very special episode, your intrepid hosts eschew the usual compilation of current climate affairs (it's not like much is happening anyway) and jump into the LMSU DeLorean to time warp our way back to 1965 USA where the ties are paisley, the clothes psychedelically tie-dyed and the climate science prescient (albeit mostly being done by a bunch of white guys). For this week's paper we present to you Summerupperers a veritable rolled gold classic climate paper, ‘Restoring the Quality of Our Environment - Report of the Environmental Pollution Panel' from the President's Science Advisory Council, commissioned by then US President Lyndon B. Johnson. Delving specifically into Appendix Y4, ‘Atmospheric Carbon Dioxide' this is a truly seminal paper that invokes the earliest use of the term ‘climatic change', sets out the emerging science around increasing CO2 which had only recently started to be accurately measured, and puts it on the radar of a national government for the first time. We certainly had some thoughts on the things the paper did and didn't say and even wondered what we would have done had we been given the chance to brief LBJ on climate change in 1965 (hint, check out our LMSU Holiday Special 2022: Don't Sum Up). We heartily commend this paper to you Summeruppers, unearthed by Tennant from the excellent website Skeptical Science. We always have One More Thing to say and Luke gave a shout out to a paper that was mentioned (but then forthcoming) in this week's paper from the US Weather Bureau that promised more advanced climate modelling that confirmed and built on thrust of what the President's Science Advisory Council had to say in 1965.And that's all from us this week Summerupperers! We shall see you next time and until then, please keep tweeting your thoughts to us at @LukeMenzel, @TennantReed and @FrankieMuskovic and if you would like to weave some golden threads through our back catalogue, give us your feelpinions or suggest papers to read we are always here for that - hit us up at mailbag@letmesumup.net.

Jonathan Barnett and Matthijs Bouw joined the Smart Growth Network to outline how adaptation and preventive measures can address climate-related threats, including flooding along coastlines and rivers, flash floods from extreme rain events, drought, wildfire, long periods of high heat, and food shortages. Between them, Barnett and Bouw wrote the book: "Managing the Climate Crisis: Designing and Building for Floods, Heat, Drought, and Wildfire". Skeptical Science has produced more than concise myth-busting "one-liners" climate activists can use to deflect the common objections of climate deniers. Other climate links are: "Nearly all marine species face extinction if greenhouse emissions don't drop: study"; "The road to new fuel efficiency rules is filled with potholes. Here's how Australia can avoid them"; "One disaster after another: why we must act on the reasons some communities are facing higher risks"; "In a climate crisis, how do we treat businesses that profit from carbon pollution?"; "Where giants live"; "Elders 'not consulted' on NT gas project"; "China's Growing Water Crisis". In light of an uptick in witch-hunting vigilantism in Papua New Guinea, Dane takes a moderate stance on anti-witchcraft laws, arguing that while extra-judicial killings are always wrong, it is acceptable to prosecute certain kinds of witchcraft. He also discusses the strange case of the Belarussian anti-government activist, Roman Protasevich, who prophesized his own capture by government forces in a dream. The episode ends rebutting science guy, Neil deGrasse Tyson's latest attack on the hypothesis that UFOs are extraterrestrials, in an article that recently appeared on CNN.com.
In this episode, I spoke to John Cook who, for almost a decade and a half, has tirelessly tried to raise awareness of the seriousness of climate change, to highlight the consensus view among climate scientists, and to combat climate change denialism. In 2007 he founded the website, Skeptical Science, which is an invaluable resource for all those interested in a readily accessible summary of the evidence for anthropogenic global warming and rebuttals to all the major, and even minor, talking points promoted by those who persist in denying the evidence for human-mediated climate change. He first earned a degree in physics and later a PhD in cognitive psychology and has previously held academic posts as a researcher in climate change communication at the University of Queensland and George Mason University, among other institutions. When I spoke to him, he was about to take up a new position at Monash University in his native Australia. John is perhaps best known for a paper he co-authored in 2013 showing that 97% of climate scientists agree humans are behind the global warming trend measured since the late 1700s. Naturally, due to its prominence in his career, we discussed this paper and some of the reactions to it, but explored many other topics as well. These included his opinion on the defining features of the scientific method, a brief summary of how we know that humans are behind the climate change trend currently observed globally, tactics adopted by those who deny climate change, leading to a discussion of the FLICC model that he conceptualised highlighting the chief methods employed by denialists, Cook's contention that science denial is essentially consensus denial, whether we are inevitably doomed to a future resembling a post-apocalyptic Mad Max-style hellscape, his opinion about whether the climate crisis is inextricably bound up with the economic imperatives of capitalism, the claim increasingly made by scientists that reducing meat consumption is a way to curb climate change, and whether we should think seriously about limiting population growth. In addition, I asked him about whether humans are even psychologically equipped to face up to an unprecedented threat such as climate change, which is widely, although unevenly, distributed across the world and demands taking into account long time scales and future generations. Despite the doom and gloom aspects of this topic, which as you can probably tell I did not shy away from in the slightest, John remains optimistic and urged everyone to try to do what they can to make a positive difference. I thoroughly enjoyed this conversation with someone who communicates his insights clearly and carefully, and displays a refreshing humility in admitting when he is not fully knowledgeable about a topic. He embodies the kind of intellectual honesty and fundamental decency we need more of in this world. Vuonna 2020 Compensate ohjasi salkun kautta hiilensidontaan noin 1,2 miljoonaa euroa Suomen markkinatalouden jatkumossa vastikkeellinen päästökompensaatio on jäänyt rahankeruulain ja poliisihallituksen limboon, johon odotetaan muutosta lähiaikoina. Jakson lopussa Sami pyysi faktoja ilmastoskeptikoille: Norjalainen Per Espen Stoknes avaa hyvin syitä ilmastokriisin kieltämiselle. Stoknesiä löytyy myös Yle Areenasta. Skeptical Science tarjoaa vastauksia ja faktaa useimpiin denialistien toistamiin väittämiin. #neuvottelijat-yhteisö neuvottelun tukena
In this episode, I am speaking with John Cook about global warming, critical thinking, and misinformation inoculation. We discuss: •His science journey and how he started out in physics, moved away from science after graduation, but then was drawn back to it later in life. •How in the long break between his Bachelor's and PhD, he was working in graphic design, cartooning, and founded the climate change website Skeptical Science. •The origins of his interest in global warming and how discussions with his climate change denying father-in-law inspired him to start Skeptical Science. •How social pressure is highly influential and leads many to hold flawed beliefs. •How one of the best ways to combat misinformation is through what's known as inoculation, which is where critical thinking is very helpful. •The concept of parallel argumentation. •And other topics. John Cook is a research assistant professor at the Center for Climate Change Communication at George Mason University. His research focus is understanding and countering misinformation about climate change, with an emphasis on using critical thinking to build resilience. He founded Skeptical Science and authored the book Cranky Uncle vs. Climate Change, combining climate science, critical thinking, and cartoons to explain and counter climate misinformation. He also co-authored the college textbooks Climate Change: Examining the Facts and Climate Change Science: A Modern Synthesis and the book Climate Change Denial: Heads in the Sand.

Today's episode of You've Been Warmed features John Cook - the founder of the very well-known website skepticalscience.com - an amazing resource that debunks the various myths that climate change deniers proliferate online.John founded Skeptical Science because he had amassed an encyclopedia's worth of climate change myths which he actively sought to debunk by using peer-reviewed scientific papers. He later studied a PhD in the cognitive psychology of misinformation in order to better understand the levers behind denial - not just in the climate space but also in areas such as vaccines or tobacco - and come up with frameworks that successfully educate people on the science of climate change.John is currently publishing a book called "Cranky Uncle vs Climate Change" where he uses cartoons, humor and all his accumulated knowledge to create a valuable resource that anybody can turn to when debating climate change deniers. He also crowdfunded the development of a Cranky Uncle mobile app which uses gamification in conjunction with all the content to educate as many people as possible. In this episode we spoke about his background, we approached various techniques that deniers use, explored the role that humor plays and looked at how each of us can develop critical thinking to the point where we can manage these debates successfully.I really admire John's work and I hope you find this episode as educational as I have. Climate change is an issue that has become frighteningly more relevant in recent years, and because of special interests, the field has become muddied with climate change deniers who use dishonest tactics to try to get their message across. The website SkepticalScience.com is one line of defense against these messengers, and it was created and maintained by a research assistant professor at the Center for Climate Change Communication at George Mason University, and both authored and co-authored two books about climate science with an emphasis on climate change. He also lead-authored a 2013 award-winning paper on the scientific consensus on climate change, and in 2015, he developed an open online course on climate change denial with the Global Change Institute at the University of Queensland. In the first episode of the "Climate and Capitalism" podcast series from GMU Cultural Studies, Richard Todd Stafford talks with John Cook, research assistant professor at the Center for Climate Change Communication, about climate change denial and what can be done to inoculate the public against misinformation in "post-truth" society. This podcast series is associated with George Mason University Cultural Studies' Colloquium Series. This year's series is called "Climate and Capitalism." The industrial revolution liberated human beings from the cycles of nature — or so it once seemed. It turns out that greenhouse gases, a natural byproduct of coal- and petroleum-burning industries, lead to global warming, and that we are now locked into a long warming trend: a trend that will raise sea levels, enhance the occurrence of extreme weather events, and ultimately could threaten food supplies and other vital supports for modern civilization. This podcast series examines the cultural and political-economic dimensions of our ongoing, slow-moving climate crisis. We engage experts from a variety of fields and disciplines to ask questions about capitalism and the environment. How did we get into this mess? How bad is it? Where do we go from here? What sorts of steps might mitigate the damage — or perhaps someday reverse it? At stake are deep questions about humanity’s place in and relationship to nature — and what our systems of governance, production, and distribution might look like in the future. — Roger Lancaster, Colloquium OrganizerLearn more about the Cultural Studies Program at GMU: http://culturalstudies.gmu.eduLearn more about the Center for Climate Change Communication at GMU: https://www.climatechangecommunication.org/Learn more about John Cook: http://www.climatechangecommunication.org/portfolio-view/john-cook/ See John Cook's website Skeptical Science: https://www.skepticalscience.com/

John Cook founded the website skepticalscience.com, where he has compiled a list of the most repeated climate change denial arguments and shows the science behind the myths. Along the way, he gained a PhD in Psychology and studies why people refuse to believe scientific truths. Here, we talk about the science of climate change denial and I let him respond to some of the most common comments I've received about climate change.

He is also director of the Penn StateEarth System Science Center (ESSC). Dr. Mann received his undergraduate degrees in Physics and Applied Math from the University of California at Berkeley, an M.S. degree in Physics from Yale University, and a Ph.D. in Geology & Geophysics from Yale University. His research involves the use of theoretical models and observational data to better understand Earth’s climate system. Dr. Mann was a Lead Author on the Observed Climate Variability and Change chapter of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Third Scientific Assessment Report in 2001 and was organizing committee chair for the National Academy of Sciences Frontiers of Science in 2003. He has received a number of honors and awards including NOAA’s outstanding publication award in 2002 and selection by Scientific American as one of the fifty leading visionaries in science and technology in 2002. He contributed, with other IPCC authors, to the award of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize. He was awarded the Hans Oeschger Medal of the European Geosciences Union in 2012 and was awarded the National Conservation Achievement Award for science by the National Wildlife Federation in 2013. He made Bloomberg News’ list of fifty most influential people in 2013. In 2014, he was named Highly Cited Researcher by the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) and received the Friend of the Planet Award from the National Center for Science Education. He is a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union, the American Meteorological Society, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Dr. Mann is author of more than 190 peer-reviewed and edited publications, and has published two books including Dire Predictions: Understanding Climate Change and The Hockey Stick and the Climate Wars: Dispatches from the Front Lines. He is also a co-founder of the award-winning science website RealClimate.org. Mark Z. Jacobson is a Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Stanford University where he is also Director of the Atmosphere/Energy Program. He is a Senior Fellow for both the Woods Institute for the Environment and the Precourt Institute for Energy. He received a B.S. in Engineering, a B.A. in Economics and an M.S. in Environmental Engineering from Stanford University. He received an M.S. and a PhD in Atmospheric Science from UCLA. The main goal of Jacobson’s research is to understand better severe atmospheric problems, such as air pollution and global warming, and develop and analyze large-scale clean-renewable energy solutions to them. To address this goal, he has developed and applied three-dimensional atmosphere-biosphere-ocean computer models and solvers to simulate air pollution, weather, climate, and renewable energy. In 1993-4, he developed the world’s first computer model to treat the mutual feedback to weather and climate of both air pollution gases and particles, and in 2001, the first coupled air-pollution-weather-climate model to telescope from the global to urban scale. In 2000, he applied this model to discover that black carbon, the main component of soot pollution particles, might be the second-leading cause of global warming in terms of radiative forcing, after carbon dioxide. This and subsequent papers provided the original scientific basis for several laws and regulations on black carbon emission controls worldwide. His findings that carbon dioxide domes over cities and carbon dioxide buildup since preindustrial times have enhanced air pollution mortality through its feedback to particles and ozone served as a scientific basis for the Environmental Protection Agency’s 2009 approval of the first U.S. regulation of carbon dioxide (the California waiver). With respect to solvers, in 1993, he developed the world’s fastest ordinary differential equation solver in a three-dimensional model for a given level of accuracy. He subsequently developed solvers for cloud and aerosol coagulation, breakup, condensation/evaporation, freezing, dissolution, chemical equilibrium, and lightning; air-sea exchange; ocean chemistry; greenhouse gas absorption; and surface processes. With respect to energy, in 2001 he published a paper in Science examining the ability of the U.S. to convert a large fraction of its energy to wind power. In 2005, his group developed the first world wind map based on data alone. His students subsequently published papers on reducing the variability of wind energy by interconnecting wind farms; on integrating solar, wind, geothermal, and hydroelectric power into the grid; and on wave power. In 2009, he coauthored a plan, featured on the cover of Scientific American, to power the world for all purposes with wind, water, and sunlight (WWS). In 2010, he appeared in a TED debate rated as the sixth all-time science and technology TED talk. In 2011, he cofounded The Solutions Project, a group that combines science, business, and culture to develop and implement science based clean-energy plans for states and countries. In 2013, his group developed individual WWS energy plans for each of the 50 United States. To date, he has published two textbooks of two editions each and ~150 peer-reviewed journal articles. He has testified three times for the U.S. Congress. Nearly a thousand researchers have used computer models he has developed. In 2005, he received the American Meteorological Society Henry G. Houghton Award for “significant contributions to modeling aerosol chemistry and to understanding the role of soot and other carbon particles on climate.” In 2013, he received an American Geophysical Union Ascent Award for “his dominating role in the development of models to identify the role of black carbon in climate change” and the Global Green Policy Design Award for the “design of analysis and policy framework to envision a future powered by renewable energy.” In 2016, he received a Cozzarelli Prize from the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences for “outstanding scientific excellence and originality” in his paper on a solution to the U.S. grid reliability problem with 100% penetration of wind, water, and solar power for all purposes. He has also served on the Energy Efficiency and Renewables advisory committee to the U.S. Secretary of Energy and was invited to talk about his world and U.S. clean-energy plans on the Late Show with David Letterman.
On May 24, 2015, I presented a live talk at the Denver ComicCon modeled after Leonard Nimoy's "In Search Of" televsision series. The session title was, "Skeptical Science." The topic was Planet X, chosen because it has grown into a large class of different claims all under the moniker "Planet X," and so an exploration of it can explore a wide variety of critical thinking -based concepts.
"We could end up being part of the problem, even when we're right," said Jim Hoggan, co-Founder of the DeSmog Blog and chair of the David Suzuki Foundation. "Self-righteousness is like a virus, and a lot of the time, it's so subtle you don't know you have it." Hoggan discussed the challenges of communicating climate science and bridging the chasm between skeptics and supporters. "I think we're at a real risk of furthering the information gap," said Bud Ward, editor of the Yale Forum on Climate Change & The Media. Skeptical Science founder John Cook said climate change denial isn't the result of lack of knowledge; it's driven by cultural factors and political ideology. “I tend to examine the behavior, rather than the motive behind it,” Cook said. “If someone’s misinforming people, you can’t comment on whether they’re lying or whether they genuinely believe it.” In this conversation on climate change media, experts discuss current coverage and how to address global issues for a clean energy future. Bud Ward, Editor, Yale Forum on Climate Change & The Media Jim Hoggan, Co-Founder, DeSmog Blog Chair, The David Suzuki Foundation John Cook, Founder, Skeptical Science; Co-Author, Climate Change Denial: Heads in the Sand This program was recorded in front of a live audience at The Commonwealth Club of California on December 10, 2013

Host: Chris Mooney How do you successfully debunk misinformation? The question is a deceptively simple one—which is precisely the problem. Debunking is easy—just refute false claims, and provide corrective information. Debunking successfully is something else again-you have to change minds, and make the corrective information stick. And how does that work? Well, as it turns out, we actually don't know very much about the process. But what we do know was recently compiled into a brilliant short document, the Debunking Handbook, available free for download from the website Skeptical Science. Point of Inquiry recently caught up with one of its authors, John Cook, in San Francisco at the fall meeting of the American Geophysical Union. John Cook is the Climate Communication Fellow for the Global Change Institute at the University of Queensland in Australia. He studied physics, and maintains the popular global warming website "Skeptical Science," which refutes misinformation by explaining, in user friendly fashion, the findings of the peer reviewed literature.
