This week's skill is how and why to create opportunities in your practice to reinforce systems during serve receive practice. In match play serve receive there are a number of factors at play other than an individual's ability to pass to the target. There is a lot of contextual interference which makes it beneficial to practice with these conditions. Tod disucsses some ways that coaches can add these types of conditions to their passing practice and enhance their live play serve receive performance. Our scenario segment builds on the idea of creating a balanced offense by focusing on how and why to get the Middle Attacker the ball more. Often middles have the highest hitting percentage on the team but get the fewest sets. This imbalance can limit the overall effectiveness of your team since the opposition will have a good idea where the ball is going. Davis explores how to keep your middles alive and working effectively, and finding ways to score and keep the opposition off balance. For our resource section we share a book that offers rich ideas that mimic The Ten Commandments, but in regards to being a "winning" teammate. These ideas are well thought out and powerful concepts that, when practiced, can be one of the turning points on a competitive team. Integral concepts like self-sacrifice are explained with both wit and humor. Readers will be sure to get something that they can put into practice right away. The Book Leads – Episode 50: Sean Glaze & STAYING COACHABLE: A Story With 4 Questions to Help You Thrive in Change and Enjoy Relentless Improvement I recently sat down with author and leadership expert Sean Glaze to cover his book STAYING COACHABLE: A Story With 4 Questions to Help You Thrive in Change and Enjoy Relentless Improvement. Sean is someone who worked as an English Teacher and coached 4 sports before his current work in the leadership field. And it makes sense to me that that's the path he's taken to his leadership and teambuilding practice. Experiencing his demeanor in our conversation, while understanding the power of communication from his 30 years of teaching literature and the lessons a coach puts into play with students – especially across four different sports -- I see the tremendous value that confluence of attributes and skills creates for his clients and audience. I believe our great teachers were our first leadership coaches, whether we know it or not. And here's a teacher who learned his lessons while coaching, shifting from directing and instructing to asking and learning. Episode Highlights The idea of being coached and being coachable are two very different things. What are the questions that lead people down the path where they make a commitment instead of remaining complacent? “We can only give people what's already in our backpack.” Experience vs. Awareness in Leadership – Which makes great leaders? The MAIN QUESTION that underlies my conversation with Sean is, How do you stay coachable, remaining open to learning and getting better in your development? Seans's Bio Sean is an author and leadership expert who has worked with clients like the CDC, John Deere, Coca-Cola, and Emory University to increase collaboration, boost productivity, and build exceptional workplace cultures. Sean's engaging conference keynotes and interactive team building events help accelerate the growth of more effective leaders. As a successful basketball coach and educator for over 20 years, Sean gained valuable insights into leading winning teams - and founded Effective Leaders to share those lessons. Sean's books, Rapid Teamwork, The 10 Commandments of Winning Teammates, and STAYING COACHABLE: A Story With 4 Questions to Help You Thrive in Change and Enjoy Relentless Improvement are entertaining parables with powerful take-aways to improve team performance and leadership! The question that Sean asks, that gets to the core of his work is: What issues are you dealing with that would disappear if you had a workplace culture that emphasized connection, accountability, and a team-first attitude? His vision of perfecting a team strategy did not go as planned. As he says, he face-planted hard. The revelation that there was more to team-building than just X's and O's hit him hard. Sean began to formulate his thoughts on leadership and team building, leading to his first book. As his teaching and coaching career continued, he began to explore a parallel career in consulting. He continued to write new books on team building and leadership, adding new lessons to the ones he learned. After 20 years, he made the decision to retire from teaching and focus full-time on leadership and team consulting in the private sector. Over the course of the interview, Sean Glaze lays the groundwork for sucessful teams, effecting leadership and to always remain coachable. After the interivew, Alan and Walt share some odd news for the week leading into Thanksgiving. Then they both dive into the Entertainment segment, discussing what they have been watching, reading and listenig to. WATCHING Walt, on Alan's suggestion, has been watcing Jean-Claude Van Johnson and loves it. He also started to watch the new A&E Biography series on MTV. Finally, Walt has been binge-watching The Tick. Alan, on Walt's suggestion, watched the entire season of the docuseries, Catching Killers on Netflix. He watched the first 3 episodes of The Wheel of Time on Amazon and feels luke-warm about it thus far. He watched the Tom Hanks flick, News of the World, and did not like it at all. Finally, Alan's weekly YouTube suggestions are the movie reaction channels, Ashleigh Burton and Popcorn in Bed. READING Walt is continuing to plow through, "Killing the Mob," by Bill O'Reilly. Simiarly, Alan is continuing to work his way through, "Dune." LISTENING Walt likes to tune in to the Sirius XM channel, Classic Rewind, in the morning to hear the Alan Hunter Show. He has been listening to the podcast, True Spies and Conan Needs a Friend. Finally, Walt does a shout-out for the cultural podcast, Radio Labyrinth. Alan has been going through a super-long episode of the Spotlight Reflection Show on RoboCop, heard on the 60MW Podcast. Alan also plugs the brand new Time Bandits Minute. He is a guest host on minutes 4, 5 and 6 along with permanent hosts, Duncan Shields and Curtis Bloes. Finally, Alan has been listening to classic Christmas music as well as New Age Christmas tunes. NICK WALKER: Welcome to Manage This, the podcast by project managers for project managers. It's our chance to meet with you and discuss what really matters in the world of project management, whether you're new to the field or have been doing it for decades. We want to encourage you and challenge you, to cheer you on and help you avoid some of the pitfalls that can come along the way. We talk to the experts, people who have gone before us, so we can benefit from their experiences and their successes. I'm your host, Nick Walker, and with me are the guys who make it all happen here, Andy Crowe and Bill Yates. ANDY CROWE: Nick, it's great to be here today, and I'm really excited about this ‘cast. NICK WALKER: Okay. Spoiler alert, it's very possible that we're going to laugh some today. Our guest is Sean Glaze, an author, speaker, and teambuilding facilitator who is all about inspiring groups to have fun laughing together so they can have more success working together. He's the author of three books: “The Unexpected Leader,” “Rapid Teamwork,” and “The 10 Commandments of Winning Teammates.” Sean has been a successful basketball coach, an educator for more than 20 years, and in that time has gained some valuable insights into how to develop winning teams. He's the founder of Great Results Teambuilding, which he uses to share those lessons all over the country, through entertaining speaking engagements and teambuilding events. Sean, thanks for joining us here on Manage This. SEAN GLAZE: Appreciate it, Nick. Looking forward to being here and sharing some great information with your audience. NICK WALKER: Sean, I'm always fascinated how skills developed in one area can transfer over into others. For example, when did you realize that the lessons you've learned from years of coaching basketball could translate well to business leaders? SEAN GLAZE: That is a tremendous question. And honestly, it was probably about eight years into my coaching career when I realized I wasn't as good a coach as I thought. I had spent most of that first decade as a coach, like many project leaders, like many team leaders regardless of industry, focused on strategy. And for basketball, that's X's and O's, and that's skill development and strategy. And you realize after you go through a couple of seasons where you know you've not gotten as much out of your talent as you should have that there's something missing. And what I had neglected for nearly a decade was culture. And everybody has probably heard culture eats strategy for breakfast, but as a young coach I had never heard that. But I certainly lived it. And so the eye-opening mirror moment for me was recognizing, at the end of a really tough losing season, I'm going to have to change if I want my team to change. And leading teams as a project manager, as a coach, you realize that strategy is what you want to do. Culture determines how well your people are going to do it. And so the relationships and connections that I then began to focus on made us far more successful in the future. And I realized that what I had done with my team could hopefully help other leaders with their teams, regardless of athletics or business or others. ANDY CROWE: You know, as I listen to this, Sean, I'm thinking, strategy you could change over a long weekend. But culture is a slow turning ship a lot of times to turn that around. And especially if you've got a toxic culture or a problematic culture, to reframe that in a positive way takes a lot of time and tremendous energy. SEAN GLAZE: Absolutely. And that's something I think first as a leader you need to know what it is you want. Because if I don't have clarity about what I want my culture to be and what actually constitutes culture, I can't deliver that or influence that on my team. So a lot of my growth as a leader was me educating myself. And hopefully those are some things that I'll be able to share toda...

Sean Glaze is a very insightful leadership and team building expert. From his days coaching a high school team to now working with companies and organizations around the world, Sean has the experience to back up his work. I really enjoyed this conversation, as Sean and I went back and forth about a variety of leadership topics. My favorite part is when Sean shared how he's learned from failure and how looking in the mirror helped him find his truth, as well as his best teammate. You'll want to get a copy of his latest book 10 Commandments of Winning Teammates as well. The 10 Commandments of Winning Teammates tells the story of Nick Turner, a talented employee who finds himself changing jobs – again. While packing to move, he finds an old piece of paper tucked away in a shoe box… a neglected gift from his high school coach that shares what it takes to be a winning teammate. As he travels to his new job, he has a series of interesting interactions that illustrate the importance of the 10 commandments his coach had emphasized years earlier. The ten lessons that Nick benefits from during his journey to his next job will inspire you to be a winning teammate – regardless of the industry you work in. The book is easy to read at about 27,000 words long, and you can find more information about it on the book’s website, www.WinningTeammate.com. Permission to Speak Podcast. Hosted by Leadership Communications Expert Kelly Vandever. Episode #17 - Sean Glaze. Permission to Speak is the video blog and podcast that loiters at the intersections of leaders who want their people to speak up, technology that facilitates connections, and results that serve an organization’s higher purpose. Topics covered in this episode include: - Wearing the same uniform or working for the same company doesn’t make you a great teammate - Have to be willing to be bad long enough to get better because you do well what you do often - Often we mean well, but we don’t have the experience or insight to know better - Knowing the skills isn’t enough, you need interpersonal skills too - Culture eats strategy for breakfast - The X’s and O’s of strategy aren’t nearly as important as the Jimmy’s and the Joe’s who have to carry out those strategies. - Talent’s essential, but it’s never sufficient - Mirror moment = the person staring back at you is the one that’s responsible for making something better - If we’re going to have a better team, we’re going to have to build better relationships - Spending as much time making friends as they spent making free throws - Not just enjoying the “ha-ha,” which are important, but what are some of those insights and “a-ha”s we can take away and apply so we’re better next week, next month and next year - The 1st Commandment is “Have Fun and Stay Positive” - Appreciate people for who they are and let them know that you grateful for their investment in your team’s mission - What does it feel like to be my teammate? - Another commandment is “Frequent Share Appreciation” - Quote from the book, “A real thank you includes a ‘for’” - “Good job” is unbelievably and painfully vague. Vague praise inspires vague efforts. Be specific with praise, thank you “for…” and the last step is to share the impact the action had on the team. - “All accountability is the result of empathy.” There’s a shared accountability that is created when I as a leader and we as teammates can see how our actions have ripple effects on other people. - Commandment, “Be Aware of and Encourage Others” - Everybody comes to you team with a different set of circumstances - The more interested you are in your people’s lives outside the workplace, the more investment you’re going to get from them at work if they know that you cared enough to ask - We’re good people, we get focused on our to-do list, we sometimes forget to focus on the importance of the people we work with. - People aren’t collaborating because they’re no relationship established - The more comfortable I am with you, the more comfortable I am with sharing information or requesting help - Care about them. Encourage them. - Not criticism about what’s happened in the past, but encouragement about what’s coming ahead and realizing you have control over the next play. - Intentionally build in different ways that people can work together with different people to get to know each other and build relationships. - As a leader, be approachable. Be intentional about being approachable. - Doesn’t matter if you have an open door policy. No one is going to walk through an open door if they know a fire-breathing dragon is on the other side. - Sometimes you need to spend more time together, use techniques to spend time with your people individually with no intent other than to build a relationship and be there to help and support them - Commandment “Stay Coachable” - Portraying managers as servant leaders - EGO = eliminating growth opportunities - Be honest about where you are - See Sean’s Tool box for free resources at GreatResultsTeambuilding.com
