Thank you for joining us for Christian Faith Center's Sermon of the week. This message is from our Nampa Location. Pastor Monty Sears brings a special message for Father's Day.In the Gospel of John alone, this all important name, spoken by Jesus, is repeated seven times. Jesus repeats the words “I AM.” In this repetition we see the fullness of His character. We have a tendency to see ourselves as we are... BUT GOD sees us not as we are, but as He has called us to be!

You Didn't Get SpaceX? Don't Worry, There Are Other Mega IPOs Coming You may feel like everyone got into SpaceX except you, and now you're wondering: Should I buy shares today? Is there something better coming next? The reality is that several other massive IPOs could be coming sooner than many investors realize. At the top of the list are OpenAI, with an estimated valuation of $852 billion, Anthropic, with an estimated valuation of $965 billion, Stripe, with an estimated valuation of $159 billion, and Databricks, with an estimated valuation of $134 billion. Before you get too excited about these potential offerings, or beat yourself up for missing SpaceX, consider what the historical data tells us. Research examining 1,724 U.S. IPOs between 2011 and 2024 found that the average IPO gained approximately 23% on its first day of trading. However, over the following three years, those same IPOs underperformed the broader market by an average of 25 percentage points. The study also found that since 1980, companies coming public with at least $100 million in annual sales and a price-to-sales ratio above 40 experienced an average decline of 45% from their first-day closing price. For current SpaceX shareholders, there could still be a near-term catalyst. Under Nasdaq's fast-entry rules, newly public companies can become eligible for inclusion in the Nasdaq-100 after just 15 trading days. However, both the S&P 500 and the Dow Jones indexes currently maintain a 12-month waiting period before new companies become eligible for inclusion. If your appetite for risk remains high, you'll likely have opportunities to speculate on OpenAI, Anthropic, Databricks, and other AI-related companies when they eventually go public. But an interesting question remains: When these AI giants hit the public markets, will investors who bought SpaceX at the IPO decide to sell some of their shares and rotate into the next hot AI opportunity? There are plenty of unanswered questions, which is exactly why we prefer not to invest based on hype, headlines, or fear of missing out. Instead, we focus on financial fundamentals, valuation, cash flow, and long-term business quality. Exciting stories can drive prices higher for a while, but over time, fundamentals tend to matter most.   What Can the Nifty Fifty and Tech Bubble Teach Us About Today's Market? Every market cycle has a story. In the early 1970s it was the "Nifty Fifty." In the late 1990s it was the internet and technology boom. Today it is artificial intelligence. The late 1990s we saw the technology boom where the internet was a revolutionary innovation that truly changed the world. Investors were correct about the technology but wrong about what they should pay for it. Companies with little revenue and no profits traded at astronomical valuations. The Nasdaq saw a five-fold increase between 1995 and early 2000. When the bubble burst, the fallout was severe. The Nasdaq ultimately lost almost 80% of its value. Hundreds of companies disappeared. Even industry leaders such as Cisco, Intel, and Microsoft experienced stock declines of 50% to 90%. Many investors assumed technology would continue growing forever and overlooked the simple fact that stock prices had already discounted years of future success. After peaking in March 2000, it took over 15 years for the Nasdaq to reclaim its previous high in April 2015. Often times I hear people say this time is different because unlike many internet companies in 2000, today's AI leaders are highly profitable businesses generating enormous cash flow. So, let's take a look at the Nifty Fifty as another, maybe more similar example. The Nifty Fifty era was built around the belief that a small group of dominant companies were so good that valuation no longer mattered. Investors piled into stocks such as Coca-Cola, IBM, Xerox, Polaroid, McDonald's, Sears and others. These companies were viewed as "one-decision stocks “buy them and never sell them. Investors would make excuses for the valuations because the businesses were strong. Through 1972, these firms averaged 22% annual earnings growth over the previous five-year period and had great profitability with an average return on equity over 22%. The problem was as enthusiasm grew, valuations expanded dramatically, with many trading at 40 to 60 times earnings despite an economy growing much slower. Then reality arrived. The 1973-74 bear market combined with inflation, rising interest rates, and an economic recession caused many of these stocks to fall 50% to 80%. The S&P 500 fell over 14% in 1973 and more than 26% in 1974. Most of the companies survived and remained successful businesses, but investors who paid excessive prices often waited a decade or longer to earn satisfactory returns. Today's AI boom has similarities to both periods. Like the Nifty Fifty, investors are concentrating heavily in a small number of dominant companies. Like the tech bubble, there is widespread excitement surrounding a transformational technology that is likely to reshape entire industries. However, history reminds us that even great companies can become poor investments when expectations become too optimistic. During every major market cycle, investors eventually discover the difference between a great business and a great stock. The key lesson from both the Nifty Fifty and the dot-com era is that transformative technologies often live up to their promise. What investors frequently get wrong is the price they are willing to pay for that future growth. AI may ultimately be every bit as revolutionary as investors believe. The bigger question is whether today's stock prices already reflect much of that future success. As we've learned from previous cycles, when expectations become too high, excellent results may not be enough to satisfy the market.   Private Credit Funds Are Facing High Redemption Requests Again This Quarter For the first quarter of 2026, redemption requests in several private credit funds exceeded the industry-standard 5% quarterly redemption cap. Second-quarter requests appear to be even higher. BlackRock's flagship private credit fund received redemption requests totaling 13.3% of fund assets, up from 9.3% in the first quarter. BlackRock has indicated it will continue to honor only up to 5% of redemption requests per quarter. Blackstone is facing a similar situation. Investors requested redemptions equal to roughly 10% of fund assets, and the firm also appears committed to maintaining its 5% quarterly redemption limit. Cliffwater may be facing the greatest pressure. Its $31 billion private credit fund received redemption requests totaling 17% of fund assets, far above the amount investors can currently withdraw and higher than the roughly 14% that was requested in Q1. Private credit funds have been dealing with a number of challenges, including rising loan losses, fraud concerns, and significant exposure to software companies. Many software businesses are facing pressure as investors question how artificial intelligence could impact their future growth and profitability. During BlackRock's last earnings call, CEO Larry Fink stated that institutional investors such as pension funds and insurance companies continue to allocate capital to private credit strategies. I don't want to call the man a liar, but it does seem strange that with all the problems that private credit is having I would think institutional funds would also be pulling back from investing. One would expect at least some institutional investors to become more cautious as risks increase. What concerns me most is the continued use of redemption gates. The longer funds limit withdrawals to 5% per quarter, the more investors may worry about liquidity. That concern can become self-reinforcing, leading more investors to submit redemption requests. If that happens, redemption demand could continue to rise in future quarters, creating additional pressure on the industry.   Investors Turn a Blind Eye to Fundamentals For many years, successful investing was built on analyzing company fundamentals. Today, however, there is a growing trend toward speculation and gambling. Many investors simply do not seem to care about valuation or earnings and instead believe stocks will continue to go "to the moon." Tesla is a good example. Three years ago, Wall Street analysts projected that Tesla would generate $163 billion in revenue by 2025. The actual figure came in far lower at $94.8 billion, more than 40% below expectations. Historically, missing growth expectations by such a wide margin would have been a major disappointment for investors. Yet Tesla shares have risen roughly 59% over the last three years despite falling well short of those revenue projections. There are other signs of speculation throughout the market. Thirteen years ago, there were only 39 private companies valued at more than $1 billion. Today, there are over 800. This trend highlights two important developments. First, private companies are staying private much longer, allowing early investors to capture a greater share of the value creation before public investors have an opportunity to participate. Second, investors are assigning much higher valuations to these businesses, many of which have little or no earnings and, in some cases, no positive cash flow at all. Markets can remain driven by optimism for long periods of time, but eventually fundamentals matter. The challenge for investors is determining when sentiment and speculation have pushed prices too far ahead of reality.   Headlines Say Crisis, Economic Data Says Otherwise The economy continues to show surprising resilience despite concerns surrounding higher energy prices and the conflict involving Iran. Many investors expected consumers to pull back as gasoline prices surged and headlines focused on geopolitical risks. Instead, economic data suggests the U.S. consumer remains in good shape. Retail sales in May rose 6.9% from the prior year, exceeding expectations and demonstrating that consumers are still willing to spend despite higher fuel costs. Even excluding gasoline stations, retail sales increased 5.4%, showing that spending strength was broad-based rather than simply a reflection of higher energy prices. Online sales, clothing purchases, restaurant spending, and other discretionary categories all contributed to the gains. Housing is also showing signs of stabilization. Pending home sales, which measure signed contracts on existing homes, rose 3.8% in May to the highest level in six months. The increase was well above economist expectations and marked a 4.8% improvement from a year ago. What makes these numbers particularly impressive is that they occurred while mortgage rates remained above 6% and energy prices were elevated because of Middle East tensions. Buyers and consumers appear to be adapting to a higher-rate environment rather than waiting indefinitely for lower borrowing costs. This does not mean there are no risks. Higher energy prices act like a tax on consumers, and housing affordability remains a challenge. However, the latest retail sales and housing data suggest the economy is far from rolling over. For investors, this is another reminder that economic fundamentals often matter more than headlines. While markets may focus on wars, oil prices, and geopolitical uncertainty, consumers are still spending, homes are still being purchased, and the economy continues to move forward.   The Most Important Part of the Fed Meeting Wasn't the Rate Decision The Federal Reserve's June meeting marked one of the biggest shifts in Fed communication and leadership in decades. As expected, the Fed left interest rates unchanged at 3.50%-3.75%, but the details beneath the surface were far more important. For the first time since 1951, a former Fed chair will remain on the Board after stepping down as chairman. Jerome Powell's decision to stay on as a governor creates an unusual dynamic as new Chairman Kevin Warsh begins reshaping the institution. Historically, outgoing Fed chairs have typically left the Board when their chairmanship ended. Warsh wasted little time signaling change. The Fed announced five new task forces that will review key aspects of monetary policy and Federal Reserve operations, including inflation frameworks, the Fed's balance sheet, its reliance on data sources, and productivity and jobs and the impact of artificial intelligence and other transformative technologies. The reviews are expected to produce recommendations later this year and could shape how the Fed operates for years to come. Perhaps the most noticeable change was the Fed statement itself. The policy statement was significantly shortened and went from above 300 words recorded in recent meetings to around 130 wors. It also removed much of the forward-looking language that investors had grown accustomed to under previous leadership. Language that suggested a bias toward future rate cuts was eliminated, reflecting a more data-dependent and less guidance-driven approach. The updated projections were also more hawkish than many expected. Nine of the 18 policymakers who submitted forecasts now expect at least one rate hike before year-end, while the other nine see rates remaining unchanged or moving lower. The result is a Fed that appears deeply divided on the path forward as inflation remains above target. Another major headline came from Warsh himself. Only 18 of the Fed's 19 policymakers submitted a forecast in the quarterly dot plot, with Warsh confirming that he did not provide one. As a long-time critic of forward guidance, Warsh appears to be signaling that the Fed may gradually move away from one of Wall Street's most closely watched communication tools. Half of the committee is worried inflation remains too high and believes rates may need to move higher. The other half sees little need for additional tightening. This sets the stage for Warsh's hope for a “family fight” as he believes more disagreement will lead to a better discussion so the Fed can finally deliver on price stability. While the rate decision itself was unanimous, the projections revealed a growing divide beneath the surface. The takeaway is clear: while rates didn't move, the Federal Reserve did. A shorter statement, less forward guidance, a chairman who won't publish his own rate forecast, five new policy task forces, and a committee split down the middle on the direction of rates all point to a Federal Reserve that looks very different than it did just a few months ago. The era of predictable Fed communication may be ending, and markets will have to adjust.   Financial Planning: Give More, Pay Less with Appreciated Stock One of the most tax-efficient ways to support a favorite charity or church is by donating appreciated stock instead of cash. When stock that has been held for more than one year is gifted directly to a qualified charity, the charity receives the full market value of the shares and can sell them without paying tax because it is a tax-exempt organization. The donor generally receives the same charitable income tax deduction they would have received had they donated cash, while also avoiding the realization of any capital gain. For example, if someone is considering donating either $50,000 of cash or $50,000 of appreciated stock, the charity receives the same economic benefit in either case, $50,000 that can be used to further its mission. Likewise, the donor generally receives the same $50,000 itemized charitable deduction. The difference is that if the stock was originally purchased for $20,000, donating the shares allows the donor to avoid recognizing the $30,000 capital gain. If the donor still wants to own the investment, they can use the cash that otherwise would have been donated to repurchase the shares, effectively increasing their cost basis from $20,000 to $50,000 and reducing future taxable gains.   Companies Discussed: Accenture plc (ACN)

A decade ago, JP Sears built a large following poking fun at yogis and wellness types with his “ultra spiritual life” videos. Then Covid came and Sears took a hard right turn. In fact, he credits the pandemic with “opening his eyes” to many of the world's problems—in his eyes, that means Anthony Fauci, vaccines, and transgender “ideology.” Sears is one of the very first people we covered on this podcast six years ago, and was one of the influencers we featured in our 2023 book about the wellness-to-right-wing radicalization pipeline. Turns out he's turned again, this time into a flavor of Christian nationalism with an antisemitic bend. Lately, Sears has been pumping out tons of Israel commentary, even turning against his former favorite president, Donald Trump. In fact, a number of right-wing influencers have soured on Israel. Is Sears sniffing out opportunities again? How is he balancing legitimate critiques of the genocide with blatant antisemitic rhetoric? And how does he fit into the growing diagonalism occurring in the right-wing attention economy? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Dave Young: Yeah. Well, and Michael Scott. It’s like, okay, but Scott, so this is toilet paper. Stephen Semple: Correct. Dave Young: Yeah. And probably some other things, but toilet paper primarily. Stephen Semple: Well, toilet paper and paper towel. Dave Young: Paper towels. Yeah, Scott. Stephen Semple: Yeah. Dave Young: Okay. Stephen Semple: Yeah. Dave Young: I’m guessing some of the things we’re going to be talking about, trees and bathroom kind of stuff. Stephen Semple: Mainly bathroom kind of stuff. Yeah. Dave Young: Okay. Stephen Semple: They became a big business in 1995, they were acquired by Kimberly Clark for $9.4 billion. And at the time that they were acquired, they were doing 3.6 billion in sales and basically they’re the inventor of basically toilet paper and paper towel as we know it today. Dave Young: Okay. Stephen Semple: They kind of got the whole thing going. They were founded in Philadelphia, two brothers, Clarence and Irwin Scott in 1879. And to really understand the birth of this company, we need to understand the world in the late 1800s. Dave Young: Well, yeah. I mean, corn cobs and I guess a handful of poison ivy leaves. Stephen Semple: Moss, grass, hay. Dave Young: Yeah, all of those things. Stephen Semple: Yeah. And this is the time that’s actually considered America’s second industrial revolution. So while things are modernizing and the country’s changing with electricity, factories and roads and stuff along that lines, modern plumbing, especially in homes, was definitely not there yet. And hygiene was like primitive, man. Cities were bad smelling and full of animal and human waste because if you think about it, animal was still the primary mode of transportation, right? Dave Young: But yeah, the streets are full of it. Stephen Semple: Yeah. Most homes lacked indoor plumbing. It was chamber pots and things along that lines. And like you were talking about, in terms of personal cleaning, it was grass. The one that got me the most was corn cobs. Dave Young: Yeah. Stephen Semple: Yeah. And really things had not changed much from the times of early Rome really. I mean, it was pretty primitive. Dave Young: The only way to get rid of it is get rid of it. Stephen Semple: Now there was the introduction of the flush toilet, which was starting to be popularized by an English plumber by the name of Thomas Crapper. Dave Young: Crapper, right. Stephen Semple: Yeah. Yeah. Which I always find sort of funny because when people say, “I’m going to go use the crapper,” it’s not an insult. You’re actually talking with the guy who made it… He didn’t invent it, but he popularized it. Dave Young: I wonder, without being vulgar, I wonder if the phrase “take a crap” is shortened for… It was crapper before anybody called it crap. Stephen Semple: Yes, it was. Dave Young: Yeah. Stephen Semple: I think there’s pretty good etymology for that. Dave Young: Yeah. Heading to the crapper. Yeah. Okay. Stephen Semple: Yep. Dave Young: It just occurred to me. I’m slow on the uptake. Stephen Semple: Yeah, no, absolutely. I expected us to go there. So the toilet was starting to come into homes of wealthy Americans, but this created a need for a new type of product because they need something that was good for cleaning but was also flushable. These old methods would clog these expensive new systems. Dave Young: Sure. Yeah. You don’t want to throw a corn cob down crapper. Stephen Semple: Right. So here’s this whole idea of an emerging new technology that’s changing the world and how often in this podcast have these empires been developed right at these times where there’s a new technology coming and that new technology presents new opportunities. And the reason why I’m harping on this is we’re there today. There’s a new technology emerging and there’s all this debate about is it going to be good? Is it going to be bad? Let’s think about what are the opportunities it presents. Dave Young: Sure. Stephen Semple: Because we’ve seen over and over again in this podcast emergence of unimagined companies because of these issues. It’s a time of change. So in Philadelphia, there’s the two brothers, Clarence and Irwin. The paper company is actually struggling. It’s a paper converting business. Basically what they’re doing is they’re bringing in large industrial rolls of paper and cutting it down to sizes for clients. Now their business is struggling, but they see this new opportunity because of the rise of indoor toilets. So they create a bold idea of selling paper specifically for bathroom use. And let’s face it, it’s a significant upgrade from the course alternatives. Dave Young: Absolutely. Stephen Semple: One of the things that amazed me is that even magazines were being used and it was so well known that the Farmer’s Almanac even put a little hole in the corner- Dave Young: So you could hang it in the outhouse. Stephen Semple: … so you can hang it in the outhouse. Dave Young: Sure. You don’t want to go forward. You used yesterday’s pages, not next week’s. Stephen Semple: Yeah. Dave Young: Yeah. Sears, Roebuck catalogs, all of those things. Stephen Semple: So well recognized that when they were printing them, they were like, “Okay, we need to print this so that it gets used for this.” Dave Young: Yeah. Stephen Semple: Anyway, sorry to go backwards, but it’s just something that just jumped out at me. So they decided that they were going to create a paper specifically for bathroom use, which was way better than the alternative. So they initially cut the paper in the small stacked squares. That was how they did it. Now there was a challenge because of the prudishness of the Victorian era made it taboo to even discuss bathroom related products. So if you can’t discuss it- Dave Young: And you still feel that echo today. Stephen Semple: Yeah. If you can’t discuss it, how do you promote it? So what the brothers did, they pioneered this idea of a private labeling strategy because again, that was new. It wasn’t really being done in that day. So instead of putting their own name on the product, they branded the toilet paper with the names of the local drugstores and merchants. This allowed a customer to purchase the product discreetly. They could just put it on a list to a clerk and the trusted store name basically provided the stamp of approval. Dave Young: Gotcha. You could get someone to prescribe it. Stephen Semple: Basically. And somehow, even though they didn’t promote it, the word of mouth got out there and the strategy was a success and the business boomed, but they had another problem. Dave Young: Stay tuned. We’re going to wrap up this story and tell you how to apply this lesson to your business right after this. [Using Stories To Sell] Dave Young: Let’s pick up our story where we left off and trust me you haven’t missed a thing. Stephen Semple: And somehow, even though they didn’t promote it, the word of mouth got out there and the strategy was to success and the business boomed, but they had another problem. They had a bottleneck because this cutting of the sheets was really time and labor-intensive. So they need a better way to produce the product. And what they saw was an innovation that was done by the post office. In the 1850s, the post office started to use perforated stamps. Dave Young: Okay. So you buy a roll- Stephen Semple: You’d get a roll of stamps and it was perforated, right? Dave Young: Yeah. Stephen Semple: So Irwin Scott took this idea and applied it to paper, put the paper on a roll with perforations allowing the customer to tear off sheets. Dave Young: Beautiful. Stephen Semple: Basically the modern day toilet roll. Dave Young: Yeah, love it. Stephen Semple: So this was the 1890s that invention basically was brilliant in terms of saving time, cutting costs. By the turn of the century, the company had about 100,000 in capital, which is like three million today. The stigma around toilet paper faded and they began marketing it under their own name and transforming the company into this mass market enterprise. Dave Young: This answers the age-old question to me of which came first? The toilet roll holder or the toilet roll. Stephen Semple: The toilet roll came first. Dave Young: So roll came first. Stephen Semple: Yeah, because basically sales pretty quickly got to about $500,000 a year, which is like 16 million today. So it’s 1907 and they have a fortuitous accident happens. A train car load of paper arrives that’s too thick to be used for toilet paper. Dave Young: Oh, no. Stephen Semple: So what do you do with the product? Here’s what they observed. Around the same time there’s a Philadelphia school teacher who’s cutting up paper for students to use to dry their hands instead of a shared cloth to help spread germs during a flu outbreak. So there’s an influenza outbreak going on. So the Scotts realized they could use this thick paper for this purpose. They already knew how to do the perforations. They already knew how to put the stuff on a roll. Dave Young: And the paper towel. Just make it wider. Yeah. Stephen Semple: The paper towel was born. By 1910s they were doing over a million dollars in sales and the further boost adaption, they started giving away paper towel holders. So the first thing they did was paper towel holders and then the toilet roll came holder came later. Dave Young: So let me write this down. The correct chronology is the toilet paper roll, then the paper towel roll, then the paper towel roll holder and we haven’t even got to the toilet roll holder yet. Who would’ve guessed? Stephen Semple: Right. Dave Young: Okay. Stephen Semple: But now- Dave Young: Keep going. Stephen Semple: You know the answer to that. You could sleep well tonight, Dave, if you’ve got that answer. Dave Young: Absolutely. Like a baby. Stephen Semple: So within two decades, Scott Paper is basically doing like 83 million rolls of toilet paper and 200 million rolls of paper towels in America every day. Dave Young: Oh, wow. Stephen Semple: Just grew like crazy. And for 70 years they were the leader in the toilet paper industry. Eventually they were surpassed by Procter & Gamble’s Charmin, who overtook it as the leading brand. Don’t squeeze the Charmin. Dave Young: Well, that’s probably just good marketing on Procter & Gamble’s part. Stephen Semple: Yes. Yeah. Dave Young: Right? Stephen Semple: Yeah. And then again, in 1995, Kimberly Clark buys them for $9 billion. Dave Young: Were they private or were they still- Stephen Semple: They were private up until that point. Dave Young: No kidding. Stephen Semple: Yeah. Dave Young: Wow. And been around a long time. So there’s a lot of Scott multimultimillionaires out there. Stephen Semple: I’m sure there are. But the thing I found that was interesting, again, it’s this whole idea that we talked about this emergence of a new technology creating gaps. And every time there’s emergence of new technology, it creates these gaps and they saw the gap and filled it. And then the next thing is when they ran into a production problem, they didn’t look around the paper industry for the solution. They saw the solution with the US Post Office. Dave Young: Yes. The application of business topology. Stephen Semple: Yes. Dave Young: Somebody solved this problem already in a different form of paper, so let’s apply that. Stephen Semple: Yes. But again, this is what we see over and over again. And then when they had the mistake happen with the paper, what do we do with this paper? They saw what the school teacher was doing, which tells me they didn’t start looking in that moment. These were two guys that were constantly looking out at the world and seeing what was going on before. Dave Young: Being aware. I think especially being aware of somebody using your product or something like it in a different way. Stephen Semple: Yes. Dave Young: So a good reason to not just focus inward when you’re in business, right? Stephen Semple: Correct. Dave Young: Look what you can learn elsewhere. Look at the post office, look at the school teachers, look at anybody that’s doing something different with something related to what you’re doing. Stephen Semple: Right. And it’s that looking outside of the industry. I find so many people, it’s just like all they do is go to industry events. So the only time they turn their brain on is when they’re at an industry event rather than constantly being curious about everything in the world around them. Dave Young: Yeah. Very cool. Very cool. Stephen Semple: It was interesting because when you don’t think about something as dull as the toilet paper industry actually being born because of the advent of a new technology. Dave Young: No, and it was definitely a problem that needed solving. Stephen Semple: Absolutely. Dave Young: There’s only so much corn you can grow. Stephen Semple: And it wasn’t going to work in the new toilet. Dave Young: No, no, you can’t. The new flushable corn cob. That’s not a good idea. I’m full of not good ideas. Anything else about Scott? Stephen Semple: That’s it. That’s it. Dave Young: All right. Well, I got to go. Not there. Thank you for bringing the toilet paper saga to the Empire Builders Podcast. Stephen Semple: And answering your question about holders. There you go. Dave Young: Yeah. All right. Yeah. We’ve solved that one for the ages. The question of the ages has been solved. Thank you, Stephen. Stephen Semple: All right. Thanks, David. Individual AI productivity gains are already here, but they are uneven, and they are not the main event. In this episode, Tim Sears, Chief AI Officer at HTEC, argues that the real transformation in software development will arrive when AI becomes a catalyst for teamwork rather than an enhancer of individual performance. The conversation examines why software development is the clearest available model for how AI will eventually reshape every business function, how the developer role is being elevated from syntax and grunt work toward architecture, security, and client judgment, why the traditional build-versus-buy decision is being replaced by a build-versus-build reality, and what it will mean when perfection in enterprise software becomes the expected standard rather than the exception. For senior leaders trying to move from supporting AI in principle to actually delivering change, Sears offers a direct and practitioner-grounded view of what needs to change in teams, in expectations, and in the way business processes are understood and redesigned. AI is moving fast — new tools, new research, new use cases every week. Emerj synthesizes what matters most, so senior leaders and practitioners can stay ahead without getting buried. Faith Kates' exit from Next Management became another example of the Epstein files turning old relationships into present-day professional consequences. Kates, the co-founder of Next, had long been known as a major figure in the modeling world, but newly released Epstein materials and follow-up reporting painted her relationship with him as far deeper than a passing association. The files showed years of warm, personal communication, business discussions, apparent advice from Epstein, and troubling exchanges involving models or aspiring models even after his 2008 conviction. Kates stepped down from Next in late 2025, officially citing personal reasons and charity work, but the timing and the later revelations made that explanation look incomplete at best. Once the emails and references became public, Next moved to distance itself from her, saying her Epstein relationship was unknown to current management and that the company was working to end all legal ties with her. In practical terms, the Epstein revelations turned Kates from a powerful agency founder into a liability. The Brunel side of the story shows how deeply Epstein's orbit overlapped with the mainstream fashion and retail ecosystem before Epstein's second arrest in 2019. Jean-Luc Brunel's MC2 Model Management, which had Epstein ties and was later scrutinized over allegations that it helped supply young women into Epstein's world, was not operating in some obscure corner of the industry. Reporting linked MC2 to major retailers and brands including Victoria's Secret, Nordstrom, Macy's, Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, JCPenney, Kohl's, Target, Sears, and Belk. Some companies later minimized the relationship or said the work was limited, but the larger point is brutal: Brunel's agency had enough legitimacy to operate inside the commercial bloodstream of American retail while Epstein's history was already publicly known. That is what makes the modeling-agency angle so disturbing—not just the individual allegations, but the way a loosely regulated industry, powerful retailers, wealthy men, scouts, agencies, visas, housing, and access all overlapped in a system where vulnerable young women could be treated like inventory long before the public reckoning finally arrived.to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-epstein-chronicles--5003294/support.

Choses à Savoir
Qui a eu le premier l'idée de fixer des prix à 99 centimes ?

Choses à Savoir

Play Episode Listen Later May 11, 2026 1:50

TCW Podcast Episode 257 - Nine Atari Games   The Atari VCS launched with nine games to entice consumers into the new gaming medium, and Combat set the trend of packing multiple "games" into a single cartridge. Featuring a wide array of game modes, Combat holds its own even today and served as the console's official tie-in title. Atari's partnership with Sears, however, rebranded all but one of the launch titles under different names, including Target Fun, released elsewhere as Air-Sea Battle. Many of the launch games carried multiple modes to stretch their value, and even these early titles pulled clever tricks to push past the VCS's five sprite limit. To justify the console's cost to families, Atari aimed squarely at adults with Blackjack while also including the educational game Basic Math. While many of these early titles were forgotten as more advanced games arrived over the course of the Atari VCS's life, their influence on a foundational system cannot be disputed.   Atari Archive: https://www.atariarchives.org/ Atari Archive (Youtube): https://www.youtube.com/c/AtariArchive Combat: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LNtI90yiOOU Air-Sea Battle: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0l0AQ5LuvQM Video Olympics: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rie4hsUeDuA Indy 500: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_POr4OdHhiI Street Racer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TCSYY1kK9so Star Ship: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4zySJ96a4U Blackjack: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_nvWBin7_Rc Basic Math: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lv7T4ya9hcg Surround: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dhZ1wfGLq1w How to do long form Square Roots: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6evC4klO_lI TCW 051 - Sons of Pong: https://www.theycreateworlds.com/episodes/TCW051 TCW 201 - Advanced Balls and Paddles Part 1: https://www.theycreateworlds.com/episodes/TCW201 TCW 202 - Advanced Balls and Paddles Part 2: https://www.theycreateworlds.com/episodes/TCW202 TCW 009 - History of Mediagenic Part 1: https://www.theycreateworlds.com/episodes/TCW009 TCW 010 - History of Mediagenic Part 2: https://www.theycreateworlds.com/episodes/TCW010   New episodes are on the 1st and 15th of every month!   TCW Email: feedback@theycreateworlds.com  BlueSky: @theycreateworlds.bsky.social Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/theycreateworlds Alex's Video Game History Blog: http://videogamehistorian.wordpress.com Alex's book: http://bit.ly/TCWBOOK1   Intro Music: Josh Woodward - Airplane Mode -  Music - "Airplane Mode" by Josh Woodward. This week on Breaking Battlegrounds, Chuck Warren and Sam Stone are joined by Manhattan Institute Cities policy analyst Santiago Vidal Calvo and Washington Free Beacon editor and Middle East Forum junior fellow Alex Welz, plus a special radio edition of B's Corner true crime. Santiago Vidal Calvo Born in Caracas and now leading the Manhattan Institute's Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) efforts, Santiago opens with an on-the-ground report from Venezuela following the capture of Maduro — including the first American Airlines flight back to Caracas in nearly a decade — and explains why Trump must press for elections in Venezuela before the U.S. midterms if his policy is to survive a potential shift in Congress. He walks through how government agencies have weaponized "privacy" exemptions and bureaucratic stonewalling to block public records requests, and why Manhattan Institute is willing to take these fights to court when ordinary citizens cannot. Santiago then breaks down his Daily Wire piece on New Jersey Transit's $150 train ticket from Penn Station to MetLife for the 2026 World Cup — versus a $60 Uber on the same route — and contrasts New Jersey's mismanagement with Kansas City's pro-tourism approach of expanded bar and restaurant hours. In the second segment, he unpacks Mayor Zohran Mamdani's "racial equity plan" and the redefinition of poverty in New York City through a $150,000 "true cost of living" benchmark — which conveniently labels two-thirds of the richest city in America as unable to afford it, justifying a massive expansion of government with 400 new indicators and 600 goals. Santiago argues the real diagnosis isn't race but housing supply, the rent freeze, and the cost of opening a business. Follow Santiago on X: @SantiVidalC B's Corner B brings the 1981 disappearance and murder of 6-year-old Adam Walsh from a Sears in Hollywood, Florida — a case that took 27 years to officially close, briefly entangled Jeffrey Dahmer as a suspect, and was ultimately tied to serial killer Ottis Toole. Out of unimaginable tragedy, Adam's father John Walsh launched America's Most Wanted, founded the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, and helped drive the creation of the Amber Alert system. The team also revisits the era of the Sears catalog and what that brand once meant to American life. Alex Welz, an editor at the Washington Free Beacon and a junior fellow at the Middle East Forum with a master's in national security from the University of Haifa, walks through the Israel-Hezbollah ceasefire, why disarming Hezbollah remains a generational challenge despite UN Resolution 1701 and the Taif Agreement. On Iran, Alex argues the regime turned out far less fragile than Venezuela-style optimists hoped, but ballistic missile capacity, the navy, and oil revenues have all been dramatically degraded, and the latest wave of protests could still force a fold. In the podcast segment, the conversation deepens and Alex shares his prediction for where Iran stands by November 2026. Send us Fan MailEarly Life & Background Kim and Nathaniel grew up in rural Kentucky, meeting in high school with lockers across the hall from each other. They worked together at a local Winn-Dixie grocery store before college, where Nathaniel pursued psychology and Kim studied occupational therapy. Both eventually moved to the Lexington area after graduating.Rise in Rock Crawling The couple stumbled into competitive rock crawling through friends in Lexington, entering their first competition—NeuRock at Paragon in Pennsylvania—in a stock class YJ. Kim finished 3rd out of 30 competitors that year. They progressed quickly, building courses at EROC events, with Nathaniel becoming a head judge and Kim earning recognition as one of the few female competitors on the East Coast.Competition Highlights Their most memorable moment came in a rock race at Alabama where Kim flipped her buggy twice, landed on all fours, and continued without hesitation. They competed from 2003 to 2011, attending King of the Hammers twice and nearly finishing in Kim's second attempt with just 13 miles remaining. A serious injury at the Badlands early in their marriage reminded them of competition's risks.Life After Competition As they prioritized family and saw unlimited-class costs skyrocket, they retired from racing to start a family. Nathaniel discovered brewing, earning his certification and launching Next Level Brewing Company in December 2019. Kim remained in occupational therapy for 22+ years. Now they coach youth football, fish, and enjoy outdoor activities with their son Mason and three rescue boxers. Support the show

Today, we’re bringing you the best from another KUOW podcast, Booming… The middle class economy is quintessentially American. It’s a whole range of businesses that cropped up to serve the growing middle class after World War II. Think coffee and apple pie at your neighborhood diner. Or back-to- school shopping at Sears. But companies that cater to the middle class are cratering under the weight of the affordability crisis. Why is the middle economy disappearing? And what does it mean for the businesses we love? Nancy Guthrie and Adam Walsh: A Confession That Should Have Closed the Case (Part 4)

In the Nancy Guthrie investigation, the evidence collected in the first hours — the DNA from inside the home, the doorbell camera footage, the physical items left behind — is either going to solve this case or it isn't. The determining factor will be whether the people who handled that evidence from the very first moment were equipped for the responsibility. The Adam Walsh case is what happens when they aren't. And it's the most devastating evidence failure in modern American criminal history. In 1981, six-year-old Adam Walsh was abducted from a Sears store in Hollywood, Florida. Two weeks later, his severed head was found in a canal over a hundred miles away. A serial killer named Ottis Toole confessed — twice. He described the abduction, the murder, and the machete he used. His description matched the autopsy findings. The Hollywood Police Department had everything it needed to close this case. Then the department lost it all. The bloody carpet from Toole's car — the most critical piece of physical evidence — was "misplaced." The blood on the machete was never lifted for testing. The car itself vanished from police custody entirely. Photographs from the original evidence collection were never even developed — they sat in the case file for over two decades. Without physical evidence, Toole recanted. He was never charged. He died in prison in 1996 serving time for other crimes. It took twenty-seven years for Hollywood PD to officially name Toole as the killer and apologize for the department's failures. John Walsh channeled his grief into America's Most Wanted, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, and AMBER Alerts. The system his son's case broke became the system his son's legacy rebuilt. The Guthrie case is active right now. The evidence chain is live. Every person who touches it is either preserving Nancy's chance at justice or compromising it. The Adam Walsh case is proof — permanent, irreversible proof — that when the wrong people handle the evidence, even a confession and a cooperating suspect aren't enough to deliver justice.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video?
