Is Private Equity Destroying Your Favorite Consumer Products?

Money Tree Investing

Is private equity destroying your favorite consumer products? Today we discuss economic news, recent Trump-era tariffs, and private equity. We touch on corporate profit margins, wage growth versus price increases, and how different industries—like autos—are affected unevenly. We also explore interest rates and the possibility that traditional cause-and-effect in markets is “broken,” questioning whether metrics like CPI, GDP, and rate changes meaningfully influence market behavior anymore, given recent patterns where markets defy economic logic. We discuss...  Recent economic updates included the rollback of several Trump-era tariffs, though many remain in place. Companies are currently absorbing most tariff-related costs instead of passing them directly to consumers. Concerns were raised that if companies start passing these costs along, price increases could hit consumers later in the year. Wage growth trends are compared with rising prices, raising questions about future consumer spending strength. Industry impacts from tariffs vary, with the auto sector singled out as experiencing specific pressures. Recent market resilience even in the face of economic data could historically trigger volatility or declines. Earnings reports no longer move markets as much because companies lower expectations to easily beat estimates. The focus on quarterly earnings is misleading; long-term company growth matters more on an individual level but less on a macro scale. Value investing has underperformed for about 20 years because fundamentals matter less in today's market. The Fed's interest rate tools are less effective because global capital flows and supply shocks weaken their control. The Fed can still cause recessions by raising rates too high but can't fine-tune the economy like before. Supply-driven inflation (like energy and supply chains) is less responsive to Fed rate hikes. Market rates often lead Fed policy, meaning bond traders set financial conditions before the Fed acts. Private equity often overleverages companies, leading to bankruptcies despite popular products, like Instapot. Private equity uses dividend recapitalization to extract value quickly, saddling companies with unsustainable debt. Examples like Sears, Joanne Fabrics, Red Lobster, and Toys “R” Us show how private equity can ruin beloved brands. Private equity has been successful for investors but often at the expense of the long-term health of companies. Financial planning for college funding is increasingly critical given new loan limits and repayment changes.   Today's Panelists: Kirk Chisholm | Innovative Wealth Douglas Heagren | ProCollege Planners Follow on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/moneytreepodcast Follow LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/showcase/money-tree-investing-podcast Follow on Twitter/X: https://x.com/MTIPodcast For more information, visit the show notes at https://moneytreepodcast.com/favorite-consumer-products-737

Open Mike Eagle’s tenth studio album, Neighborhood Gods Unlimited, continues the rap legacy that he started in the late 2000s when he cofounded the trio Thirsty Fish. From there, he made a bigger name for himself as a solo artist, starting with his 2010 debut, Unapologetic Art Rap. Along the way, he even appeared in the cartoon Adventure Time as a rapping gingerbread cookie. On top of his music career, Open Mike Eagle has also started multiple multimedia endeavors, like the artist collective Hellfyre Club and an alt-comedy TV series called The New Negroes (both of which have since ended). These days, he’s running his own podcast network, Stony Island Audio. KEXP’s Martin Douglas spoke with Open Mike Eagle about the years leading up to his newest album, which included a divorce and various collaborations with other rappers. Neighborhood Gods Unlimited draws heavily on Black surrealism, similar to movies like Sorry to Bother You and Get Out.“ I felt challenged and inspired by these pieces of media,” Open Mike Eagle says in the interview. “I want to tell an absurd story in a rap album. I want people to feel the depths where it might be trying to go emotionally and the questions it might be trying to ask — but I don't want to say all the answers.” He continues, “At every step of that process, I have to deal with self-doubt. I want to make art that is able to contend with that.” Photo credit: Robert Adam Mayer Support the show: kexp.org/deeper Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/sound/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In the novel “Wanting,” two childhood friends grow up and commit to lives they feel were never meant for them, and begin questioning their choices.  In the early 1990s, there was no bigger football team than the Dallas Cowboys. We usually associate teenagers with the need to be fashionable, but as many parents learn going through the back-to-school season, that desire starts much earlier in life. Kids need to fit in. And sadly, a lot of that can revolve around the clothing you wear. For families with money, it's a lot easier situation to deal with. For those without it, it can have lifelong implications. Style, back in my day, wasn't all brand-focused. It was about fitting in. We all shopped at stores like Sears and Penny's. But as mall culture grew in the 80s, so did the need to fit in. • Saul - Hebrew name • Paul - Hellenistic name (Roman citizen). Went by Paul bc Gentiles were his major focus of ministry. Paul writes from a Roman prison to Timothy in Ephesus. Paul had been in prison several times but nothing like this. Sense of ambition vs Sense of Mission - The work was more important to Paul than his life. That's the difference between selfless leaders and selfish leaders. Paul's attitude in chapter 4 is based on a heavenly hope not earthly resentment. Acts 20:17-38: Tearful farewell saying goodbye to the elders in Ephesus. They knew Paul was heading into dangerous places. II Timothy 4:6-8: But this is different. Paul knows he won't be long for this earth. His life is being poured out! Introduction: “How does it end?” That's the question I usually ask my wife when she suggests watching something together. I want to know. It doesn't ruin it for me. I want a happy ending. I'm depressed enough living in a fallen world without the help of Hollywood. God must want us to know how things are going to bc He tells us in His Word. We learn that no human lives forever on the earth. We learn that Jesus is preparing a place for us after we die. Jesus spoke about how things will end on earth with vivid details in Matthew 24 & 25 (The Olivet Discourse). And last but not least, God gave us the Book of Revelation the greatest details on how it all ends on the earth). This letter is raw and powerful. It is personal but not chummy. This letter contains 25 imperatives. Paul is commanding Timothy is many critical areas. I. There are four chapters (each has its own theme) 1. Chapter One - Fanning the flame 2. Chapter Two - Training the pastors 3. Chapter Three - Relying on Scriptures 4. Chapter Four - Finishing Well II. The II Timothy Overview Chart - 1. The Past - Timothy's heritage 2. The Present - Passing it on 3. The Future (2-fold) a. The Deception of the World b. The Devotion of the Disciples III. The Personal Opening - 1:1-5 (Authority w/ affection & affirmation) - God used Paul to prepare Timothy before his death in a similar manner that God prepared Joshua after Moses death. Every organization has as its goal passing on the leadership to the next generation. Few have accomplished this for any length of time. My father's company GM is not the giant it used to be in the automobile industry. My father-in-law's company, Sears dominated the market for over a hundred years but has since fallen on hard times. Christianity on the other hand has endured for over 2,000 years. Why? Two reasons: (1) God is the eternal CEO of His work (2) God's work is an organism rather than an organization. 1. Paul was Timothy's spiritual father and this is no “gonna miss you” letter. It's a call to courage. It's a call to leadership. It's a call to preaching in a world where antagonism was on an all-time high. The enemies of the cross expanded far beyond the JRE and now coming from the Roman Empire itself. This changed everything. Paul went from “house arrest” in his first Roman imprisonment and now he is bound in chains, cold and alone, knowing he would not survive this incarceration. = 1:1 - Paul the author speaks first with authority then with affection= 1:2a - Timothy the recipient = 1:2b - Paul ended Titus w/ “love, faith, grace” and opens II Timothy w/ “grace, mercy, & peace”= 1:3-4 - Paul opens with being thankful, prayerful, tearful, hopeful, joyful (and calls adds the title of “servant”) ● As did my ancestors/forefathers” - Paul was not the first to walk faithfully with God and he will not be the last! Many endured incredible persecution and pain. ● “with a clear conscience” - I Timothy 1; II Timothy 3:9; “remember you constantly in my prayers (couldn't stop there but instead he defines constantly) “night and day” ● “I remember your tears” - ● “I long to see you” -

Send us a textDid you know that laundry is the #1 source of microplastic pollution? With every load of laundry, millions of tiny plastic particles come off our synthetic clothes, down the drain, and into our waterways. In this episode, we speak with Max Pennington, Co-Founder and CEO of CLEANR. Max and his partners may have the solution to plastic pollution we've been looking for. His Cleveland-based company recently launched a patented filter that captures up to 90% of all microplastics from your washing machine before they enter the drain. Max developed this breakthrough technology with fellow engineering students Chip Miller and David Dillman within the Sears think[box], an innovation lab at Case Western Reserve University. Their VORTX filter design was inspired by the gills of fish, specifically by the way manta rays and basking sharks filter feed. This biomimicry-based design creates a vortex that keeps the filter from clogging while effectively capturing harmful microplastics. These young entrepreneurs recently launched their company CLEANR, with a filter that easily attaches to any washing machine. Hear how Max and his partners plan to bring this technology to market. Their CLEANR filter is currently available as an external washing machine attachment for $299. The ultimate goal is to integrate it directly into washing machines, making microplastic filtration as standard as lint traps in dryers. The company is also exploring applications beyond laundry, including whole-home water filtration to protect against microplastics entering our bodies through drinking water. Capturing microplastics before they enter our waterways could be a real game-changer, especially if supported by legislators and policymakers. Would they go for it? Max thinks so. Already, five U.S. states have introduced legislation requiring microplastic filters on washing machines, with similar momentum building in Europe. With synthetic fibers from our clothing accounting for 35% of all plastic pollution in our water systems, the implications extend far beyond environmental protection. Recent studies have found alarming connections between microplastics in the human body and increased risk of heart disease and other health conditions. These plastic particles have been discovered in human blood, brains, and even the placentas of newborn babies. With an estimated 22 million pounds of microplastic particles entering the Great Lakes annually, the Cleaner team aims to make Cleveland "ground zero in the fight against microplastic pollution," tackling it one laundry load at a time.Learn More:About our Guest, Max Pennington, Co-Founder and CEO of CLEANRAbout CLEANRAbout buying a CLEANR Filter About Sears think[box] About microplastics and laundry About Microplastics and the Great Lakes  Follow us: https://www.facebook.com/ecospeaksclehttps://www.instagram.com/ecospeakscleContact us:hello@ecospeakscle.com

In total, there are 30 stores that we will take a look back at. The indoor mall is still a popular destination today; however, its heyday was definitely the '70s through the '90s. You didn't need much money, as the 'mall rat' identity only required you to be inside a mall hanging out with friends. Kids of the day could spend hours sitting on benches or wandering the corridors, looking into some of the stores that will be mentioned on this show. How many of these stores did you spend hard-earned money at?Become a supporter on Patreon! $5/mo. gets you access to bonus podcast episodes and more!Helpful Links from this EpisodePurchase My New Book Cape Cod Beyond the Beach! In My Footsteps: A Cape Cod Travel Guide(2nd Edition)Hooked By Kiwi - Etsy.comDJ Williams MusicKeeKee's Cape Cod KitchenChristopher Setterlund.comCape Cod Living - Zazzle StoreSubscribe on YouTube!Initial Impressions 2.0 BlogWebcam Weekly Wrapup PodcastCJSetterlundPhotos on EtsyListen to Episode 204 hereSupport the show

ANGELA'S SYMPOSIUM 📖 Academic Study on Witchcraft, Paganism, esotericism, magick and the Occult

In this video, I explore the magical dimension of Bruno's thought—an aspect often overlooked or dismissed in favour of his more fashionable reputation as a forerunner of modern astronomy. But Bruno was no mere proto-scientist. He was a visionary who believed that the universe was infinite, ensouled, and fundamentally magical—a living network of correspondences that could be navigated through imagination, desire, and memory.Drawing from his key texts—De Magia, De Vinculis in Genere, On the Composition of Images, Signs and Ideas—and supported by the work of scholars like Frances Yates, Ioan Couliano, Karen DeLeón-Jones, and Manuel Mertens, I show how Bruno developed a magical system where cosmology, ritual, and philosophy collapse into one another. His art of memory wasn't just a mental exercise—it was a theurgical practice. His use of images wasn't ornamental—it was a means of binding the soul to the divine. And his vision of the magician wasn't that of a trickster or charlatan, but of a philosopher in ecstatic alignment with the cosmos.CONNECT & SUPPORT

#624: JL Collins doesn't know what the efficient frontier is. The author of "The Simple Path to Wealth" — the guy synonymous with VTSAX and chill — admits this right off the bat when we challenge him with advanced investing concepts. Collins joins us for Part 1 of a two-part series where we skip the basics and dive straight into the complex stuff. We grill him on whether his simple approach actually beats more sophisticated strategies, and his answer might surprise you. He concedes that Paul Merriman's four-fund portfolio probably outperforms his one-fund approach mathematically. But Collins argues that execution trumps optimization every time. Most people can't stick with complex strategies for 20 years, especially when those strategies require selling winners to buy losers – something that goes against human nature. Collins prioritizes what works in real life over what looks good on paper. He calls index funds "self-cleansing" because they automatically rotate out failing companies and sectors while rotating in the new winners. You don't need to predict which companies will dominate next – you'll own whatever rises to the top. The episode covers his thoughts on VTSAX versus VTI, international diversification, and why he'd rather put Tabasco than Cholula on his eggs — his quirky way of explaining personal preferences in nearly identical investment options.
