In this episode, I'm excited to welcome Dr. Barry Sears, the renowned creator of the Zone Diet and a pillar in our field. Dr. Sears has not only authored bestsellers but has also made incredibly important contributions to clinical practice which we still rely on today: He is, for instance, the scientist who put the use of the AA:EPA ratio on the map. Dr. Sears provides elegant and accessible explanations of the unassailable importance of diet in addressing inflammation, metabolic health, chronic disease, and longevity, and the role that fatty acids play in that milieu. And while he and I might not agree that polyphenols need to be absorbed intact for benefit - there's plenty of evidence that their postbiotic products are very important players, especially in their interactions with the epigenome - his concerns about the chemical structure of highly concentrated fish oil supplements (with the potential for isomerization, as he argues) has opened my eyes and is important, without doubt. I think the jury is still out as to whether there is a negative influence of isomerization in highly concentrated EPA and DHA, but it's worthy of further investigation and (importantly) is another factor in the argument for a whole-food approach. - DrKF Check out the show notes at https://www.drkarafitzgerald.com/fxmed-podcast/ for all the relevant links and resources. I've been a listener since day one. The Paleo Solution was a real eye opener in regard to noticeably feeling different after eating “clean”. I'm turning 40 next year and thought it would be a good idea to get a snap shot of where my Hormone levels are. I like to think I do a good job of being cognizant of eating well, sleeping, and training. My recent hormone bloodwork: LH 4.2 FSH 2.9 Testosterone 724 Prolactin 24.5 Need I be alarmed about my prolactin? From what I understand it can indicate a serious problem or just be due to endurance training. Over the past 2 years I've been running a lot. I trained for and completed a 50 mile Ultra Marathon and a Marathon. As of late I am lifting (squats 2x a week deads 1x a week). My running mileage is low comparatively to a few months ago. Some pull ups and push ups every day. Besides just being fatigued from training at times I feel and think I perform pretty well. All though I don't notice it work is a stressor and I'm certain that the shift work I do isn't helpful. I plan to follow up about my blood work. Should I be asking for a thyroid blood work? Is it dumb to just attribute the high prolactin to endurance training and low carb eating? Omega 3's Amy writes: To omega or not to omega? That is the question. Kresser is going to try & sell me some tomorrow. Barry Sears says they're the answer to whatever ails you. But Masterjohn says they're basically poison, and we need more arachadonic acid, in fact. In the last podcast of yours I heard, you mentioned them briefly. What are you doing about them lately? (Feel free to use this for a podcast question if you like :) ) Alternatives to Phenibut for Mood/Well Being (if necessary) Matt says: I currently average 1 gram of phenibut a day to lift my mood & prevent anxiety and have played with periods of abstaining for 1+ months. I find only a little withdrawal symptoms so its not untenable however my baseline mood is not nearly as social and happy as I am with the small to moderate phenibut usage. My question to you both is do you see a problem with it as most of the "research" out there is N=1 examples of people abusing and experience rebound anxiety. Are there other anxiolytics like ashwaganda? others? I should try and what are good sources as I am reluctant to grab off a random amazon wholesaler. For context my sleep is dialed in at 7-8 hrs per night, daily 10 min meditation, yoga and fitness, and eat a paleo (+rice) diet. Biohackers Amy Lamotte and Leslie Kenny teach us how to hack autoimmune disease with simple and effective techniques that anyone can follow. Their tips come from their own battles with autoimmune disease as well as the many people they have been coaching in their clinical nutrition and health coaching practices. Leslie was misdiagnosed at 34 with lupus and rheumatoid arthritis requiring thousands of dollars to be spent on medication, until she hacked her autoimmune disease treating it and reversing it herself through diet, supplementation and testing. Now at age 55 she lives free of signs and symptoms of autoimmunity. Amy started having the signs of autoimmune disease at 18, but was continually turned down by doctors who couldn't or wouldn't help until she was diagnosed 16 years later of Hashimoto's Disease. Today Amy lives free of the symptoms of her autoimmune disease through diet, lifestyle and supplementation. Both Amy and Leslie agree that gut health is fundamental for autoimmune diseases. A few books that were influential to Amy's and Leslie's journey to fight their gut issues were Barry Sears' The Anti-Inflammation Zone and The Paleo Diet by Loren Cordain. We discuss how we can empower ourselves and our children to use their own inherent wisdom to become thriving adults. Kayla holds a degree in child development and is an accredited instructor of Attachment Parenting International, a parenting program founded by Dr. Barry Sears in the 80's, based on a philosophy that proposes methods aiming to promote parent/child relationships based on eight pillars: including parenting preparedness, building relationships with your child based on love and respect, touch, positive discipline, and balance in your personal and family life. Using the knowledge she learned by becoming a certified and practicing instructor, Kayla wants to shift the parenting culture and shift the mindset from "childism" supression to respect. This is an eye opening and informative conversation on shifting the parenting mindset and how we, as parents, can inspire a culture of compassion and respect in our future generations. I'm going to talk to you about the book that turned my health around. The name of this book is “Mastering the Zone” by Barry Sears, Ph.D. This is a quote from his book: “Obviously, fat was not the enemy. If fat isn't the enemy, then what is? The answer is insulin. It's excess insulin that makes you fat and keeps you fat. And your body creates excess amounts of insulin when you eat either too many fat-free carbohydrates or too many calories at a meal. Therefore, when you talk about the zone, it is really the zone of insulin. Not too high, not too low—a zone of insulin controlled by your diet.” In the second chapter, he goes on to talk about protein: “More important, protein is so vital because it stimulates the hormone glucagon.” Glucagon opposes insulin. It was the exact opposite effect, which means you can reduce the effects of insulin by increasing glucagon. Protein and exercise both work to increase glucagon. Carbs, of course, stimulate insulin. “Glucagon has the opposite physiological action of insulin. In fact, glucagon acts as a major governor of excess insulin production.” He goes on to write, “It is excess insulin that makes you fat, makes you hungry, makes you mentally foggy, decreases physical performance, and increases the likelihood of chronic disease.” This information blew me away. It is at the heart of my Healthy Keto and intermittent fasting diet. However, I improved on this method by increasing his recommended fat intake from 40% to 70%. I also recommend 20% protein, 5% vegetables, and 5% carbs. Dr. Eric Berg DC Bio: Dr. Berg, 51 years of age is a chiropractor who specializes in weight loss through nutritional & natural methods. It's hard to believe that Dr. Barry Sears blessed us with The Zone Diet 25 years ago. Fortunately for us, Dr. Sears has continued his dedication to researching how the foods that we eat impact our health and our weight. Dr. Sears joins the show to discuss his latest book, The Resolution Zone, which cements his legacy as the anti-inflammation guru! He shares how the Resolution Response provides a new unifying theory to understand why we develop chronic disease and gain weight.
Dr. Barry Sears has dedicated the last 35 years of his research career to studying the links between diet, hormones, and health and is dedicated to restoring a state of health that can be controlled by reducing inflammation in your body. In his research, he studies dietary control of hormonal response and develops innovative approaches to help treat and reverse silent inflammation, the leading cause of cardiovascular disease and Type-2 diabetes. His research has led to his best-selling books Enter the Zone, Mastering the Zone, Zone Perfect Meals in Minutes, and had additionally penned The Soy Zone, Anti-Aging Zone, Omega Zone, Toxic Fat, A Week in the Zone, Zone Meals in Seconds, Top 100 Zone Foods, The Mediterranean Zone, and soon to be released, The Resolution Zone. Beyond The Zone Diet #SANE with Dr. Barry Sears & Jonathan Bailor
This week Shaun and Matt discuss 5 strategies you can use outside the gym to improve the results you get in the gym. Most people often focus so much on the program they're following, the sets and reps of every movement in the hour or two they're in the gym and then completely undo all their hard work in the other 23 hours of the day. Listen in to hear what 5 things you can work on for better results in the gym! 0:00 - 5:00 Bali retreat recap 06:21 Yeah, so essentially, the point number one is a flexibility or mobility routine. And we just talked with one of the boys at the gym before and he said he'd like us to talk about a morning one and a nighttime one, and how to know the difference between what you should do, and what they should entail. 07:47 Yeah, and I really found that was nice because, when I get out of bed, I just feel stiff because you've been lying there. I'd find it after five minutes, just from simple breath work and just sitting in a pose that my body would already just open up so much. 12:48 Yeah, well, so I've got two. I've got ... I've been a massive user of True Protein's ZMA for a long time. That's just a lemon drink that I had every single night, or I used to have every single night until this new one came along. But, essentially, it's zinc, magnesium, amino acids. And they're all just proven things for relaxation and sleep. And it comes in a nice little lemon drink. It's a little trigger. At the end of the night, to have the drink. Half an hour later, winding down, bedtime, lots of other things. 13:17 So it's setting your body in a routine habit around sleep so it knows what's coming and it's ready for that state. 19:10 I actually sleep a little less than I think I do. I definitely get eight hours in bed. And I fall asleep straight away and I'll wake up and I'm pretty much out of bed straightaway. But the ... I reckon it's going to tell me I'm getting like seven ... between seven and eight hours sleep, not eight hours plus, like I think I'm getting. 26:19 So that's the only tricky thing that I find. With ... In terms of tracking it, to go from zero knowledge to a shit-load of knowledge, which you will go to after tracking some food stuff, it is amazing. Like MyFitness Pal, hands down for someone who's going from complete novice to actually learning about how many calories are in a 200 gram steak 29:44 Yeah, that's ... So I didn't really like MyFitness Pal, but I found the Zone diet really good. If you haven't done it before, or heard about it, Dr. Barry Sears wrote a book on it. It's really good. CrossFit endorses it, as well. 30:58 It shows a little bit of discipline, doing it for a full month. And, also, do it while you're out. I mean, you don't have to take scales, but just practice the discipline and the self-control around divvying it up with your eyeballs, and being honest with yourself, and not saying, "Oh, for this meal, I'm just going to have a little bit more, and then the next one, I'll have a little bit less." So divvy up each one how you meant to, throughout the day, even whether you're eating out or eating at home. 33:01 Okay, cool. We getting there. Environment is super important to help your training. So we're talking about the space that you're in. So whether it's your car, your workspace, how you keep your house. Any other environment you may typically be in right? 36:17 Just like if your TVs in a prominent location, you're probably more likely to walk straight into the house and turn it on. So just things like that. So if you set up your environment, like let's say you put your TV in the cupboard every night, are you more likely to go in and get it out, plug it in, plug in the antenna, tune the channel and then turn the TV on? Or are you going to walk in and turn the TV on that's already set up? 40:31 Set your environment around the habits that you're trying to build. Don't put things in there that you know are no good so there is the temptation every single day to do it because ... your temptation muscle is just going to die and one day you're just going to grab it and go for it. And in that moment of guilt, you are going to probably have another one. Feeling bad for yourself. 45:10 Yeah. That's cool. The big thing for me is being able to distinguish that, because ... and I've talked about a lot recently, this thing ... and I talked about on our last podcast, Episode 73, I think it was, with Luke. But the studies they did around soldiers who came back from Vietnam. And when they were in Vietnam, they were heroin addicts. And they came back to America, the environment and the people that they were around, completely changed. So it took away all the social triggers, it took away all the environmental triggers of having those drugs. 51:32 I would suggest you probably be better off spending a little less time with those people, if CrossFit and the training is the thing that you value. And find more friendships within the gym and start divvying your time up a little more to them, or making a little more time for them. Because that's just going to reinforce the good stuff you're doing in the gym. And if that's something that you personally value and want and want to continue doing, then that's the best way to do it. Not to say that you shouldn't hang out with those friends, but just limit the time. Just divvied it up appropriately, based on the goals that you have, spending time with different people.

When it comes to breaking down the myths about cholesterol and nutrition, Dr. Jonny Bowden is a wealth of great information. Dr. Bowden has written numerous works including his latest book with M.D. Masley Steven, Smart Fat: Eat More Fat. Lose More Weight. Get Healthy Now. Devon and I were so psyched for this interview with Dr. Bowden about cholesterol and nutrition that we took some time to discuss how to get on track with eating healthy and how to schedule time for yourself to focus on your health. It's Okay to Fall Off the Health Wagon Sometimes Maybe you decided to eat some extra chicken wings, ice cream, or sugar drinks over the Labor Day Weekend (don't worry, so did we!) and you're feeling guilty about it. Don't feel that way about yourself and don't judge yourself. It's okay to enjoy all of our favorite, unhealthy foods and overindulge every once in awhile. Plus it's extremely hard not to once you're around friends and family who are eating the same fatty foods. Just relax and know that being healthy is a journey that we're all on. It's normal to eat food that you normally wouldn't eat. Just get back to focusing on your own personal health goals once that weekend BBQ is over and done. Follow a Health Journey with a Focused Plan So what can you do to get back on the health wagon and start focusing on your health again? Plan and schedule. Now that school is starting, maybe it's extra hard for you parents out there if you have kids to drive to school and to take to all their after school activities. Even if you don't have kids, how do you schedule your life? Stop and think about your own time and your own goals. Time goes by so fast and it's easy to ignore your health needs year after year while you put other people ahead of yourself. Rob and Devon's Action Tips to Create Good Health Habits and Patterns To created a focused plan on improving your health, we have some tips to help you create good health habits and patterns. Your mission for the week: Go ahead and pick as many of our tips that you want to do this week. Try to do at least 1-3 of them each week to focus on building those habits. If you focus on more than 3, then you'll be all over the place by trying to focus on too much at once. Now, take 15-30 minutes and look at your schedule. Think about what 1-3 tasks you're going to do for yourself this week: Drink 80 oz of water. Eat 2 green vegetables in per day. Complete 2-3 workouts a week (even just 10 minutes each time). Do healthy batch cooking and meal prepping once or twice during the week. Have a No category: For example, pick one thing that you're not going to eat this week whether it's alcohol, soda, juice, cookies, or processed foods. Catch up on your sleep by sleeping 7-8 hours consistently during the week. You don't have to complete the tasks perfectly. This exercise just to help you start good health goals. When it comes to completing goals, it can be difficult to do it all on your own. Keep track of being accountable with your goals with our Open Sky Fitness Podcast Facebook group! Share with the group what your goals are so we can all keep each other accountable. Cholesterol's Relationship with Our Body There's a lot of feelings of fear when people hear the word, "cholesterol," and we immediately begin thinking about gaining weight and different health problems like heart disease. This fear has been built upon years and years of different sources saying the cholesterol is so bad for us and we've believed in this myth and more for far too long. According to Dr. Jonny Bowden, we've been so wrong about our fear of cholesterol. In fact, there is nothing to fear. Dr. Bowden will explain in detail in the podcast, but all in all, there is no connection of saturated fat with heart disease and our cholesterol levels. If Ketogenic and Mediterrerian diets call for eating healthy fats that don't actually make you fat, then why are we following other diets such as low-carb and low-calories that can make us sick? To truth is, is that the types of diets that focus on consuming a lower amount of carbs and calories don't actually help us in the long run. In reality, we're actually starving our bodies from the nutrients and healthy fats that it needs to feel full and be energized. How to Analyze Cholesterol Levels Cholesterol is so much more complex than just knowing a single number and analyzing the good cholesterol (High-Density Lipoprotein) and the bad cholesterol (Low-Density Lipoprotein). That was the past but today, we know that there are so many different types of HDL and LDL that do not all behave the same. When you talk to your doctor about your cholesterol, have a particle test done to truly know where your cholesterol levels are at. A doctor should not be prescribing a medication such as Statins without taking a closer look at all of the different factors in someone's cholesterol. A medication shouldn't be prescribed by just looking at the good HDL and the bad LDL. There's more to cholesterol than just HDL and LDL.

AIR DATE: October 11, 2012 at 7PM ETFEATURED EXPERT: FEATURED TOPIC: “Getting Low-Carb To Join The Scientific Mainstream” In recent years, we've seen a lot of momentum happening within the scientific realm towards carbohydrate restriction that could quite possibly be the beginning of the next low-carb revolution. This is the hypothesis of this week's special expert guest on "Ask The Low-Carb Experts." He is Brooklyn, NY-based SUNY Downstate biochemistry professor and the founder of the named joining us to talk about the hot topic "Getting Low-Carb To Join The Scientific Mainstream." There's a plethora of quality research being conducted out there on carbohydrate-restricted diets on a variety of fronts from metabolic syndrome to epilepsy to cancer. But unfortunately these research projects for the most part are not being funded by major funding sources like the National Institutes for Health or other key sources. So how do we get low-carb to join the scientific mainstream so that more investigation can be done into the veracity of this way of eating? That's what we explored in this conversation with Dr. Feinman. CHECK OUT THE LOW-CARB MEALS FROM DIET-TO-GO:Low-Carb meal plans from . No carb counting, no cooking.Enter "LLVLC" at checkout for 25% off!NOTICE OF DISCLOSURE: TRY LOUISE'S FOODS LOW-CARB BREAKFAST BITES & GRANOLAUSE COUPON CODE "LLVLC" AT CHECKOUT FOR 15% OFF!NOTICE OF DISCLOSURE: ***Dr. Feinman talked about a project he is helping high school senior Matthew Engel with encouraging people on a low-carb diet to take pictures of what you eat and e-mail it to them. Here's the address: *** Here are some of the questions we addressed in this podcast: TC ASKS:I'm interested in what Dr. Feinman thinks about the Harvard study recently cited by Dr. Barry Sears from The Zone Diet entitled HARMONY ASKS:I'm a little too young to properly remember the battle over cigarettes. But are there any lessons we can learn from that experience to use in the promotion of the science behind low-carb diets? DEBBIE ASKS:In Canada, . It seems after decades of nutritional decay, government health leaders there are finally seeing the light on the science. Do you think a similar announcement for adults will be forthcoming in Canada? How close are we in the United States seeing something similar to this happen here? BOB ASKS:It seems to me that the main reason low-carb diets are not an accepted part of the mainstream is that organizations such as the USDA and the NIH produce documents such as the Food Pyramid and MyPlate that push for carbohydrates to be a major part of a healthy diet. In light of the evidence that supports the health benefits of a high-fat, low-carb diet, why has there not been a lawsuit challenging this erroneous advice? Wouldn't someone who has meticulously followed this advice and then developed worse symptoms with their diabetes, for example, have a legitimate case and be able to set the precedent that high-fat, low-carb is a valid alternative? Are you aware of anything like this in the works? NANCY ASKS:People like Dr. Phil and Dr. Oz seem to have a lot of influence with average people when it comes to healthy living because of their prominence on national television. I personally do not watch them because I like to do my own research and come up with my own informed decisions on how to live a healthy life. But everyday I hear people around me asking, 'Oh did you see what Dr. X said about BLANK?' Is there anyone out there who you see breaking into mainstream television like Dr. Phil and Dr. Oz have to promote the scientific principles of low-carb lifestyle? What would it take to make something like this happen in terms of sponsorship, profitability and keeping the messages communicated focused on what the science is showing? RICHELLE ASKS:I would like to suggest that efforts be directed at the universities and scientific publications – especially textbooks. This year I purchased the “Guyton and Hall Textbook of Medical Physiology 12th edition” and I was mortified by the ignorant comments in the textbook about cholesterol, nutrition, heart disease and basic metabolic processes like lipid metabolism and ketosis which was actually confused with ketoacidosis. This is a current textbook teaching emerging medical professionals and it's spouting information that has long since been dismissed and corrected. Food and pharmaceutical companies pay for research to be conducted in the universities that have the experts that write these textbooks and so it is obvious why it is difficult to change their minds, perhaps unless the government insists. We need to convince our government health departments of the fact that unhealthy populations cost the government and the community a boatload of money. Does Dr. Feinman have any ideas about where and how to start making inroads on this front? PETRO ASKS:Given the remarkable results of treating both metabolic syndrome and Type 2 diabetes with a low-carb diet, is Dr. Feinman aware of any research on the combination of treating either of the two conditions with both a low-carb diet and metformin? Previous research suggests the combination of metformin and exercise may be more complicated than expected. If Type 2 diabetes is the health crisis of the future, it seems that careful research into the combination of treatments typically used is indicated and ought to be ripe for funding by any responsible health organization. DAN ASKS:What research has been done or is planned for the effectiveness of low-carb in controlling diabetes and especially reducing cardiovascular risk for diabetics? Studies like ACCORD or ADVANCE claim to show no or worse cardiovascular benefit to lowering blood sugar with drugs. What about those who maintain excellent blood sugar control with low-carb? Doctors are quick to prescribe statins to diabetics, though I don't see any benefit in the study data for diabetics who haven't already had a heart attack. It would be good have data that shows diabetics who control blood sugar with low-carb have no higher cardiovascular risk than non-diabetics.

They asked us to create a Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy "Wellness Minute." So now a new Wellness Minute runs on that station each morning at around 7:40. Each Wellness Minute features the doctor and I going over 5 of his best tips on a given wellness subject like: losing weight, getting in shape, living a healthy lifestyle, etc. Now these Wellness Minutes are available online. If you have a favorite radio station that you think would benefit from our Wellness Minutes send them an email telling them about it and who knows maybe you can hear us everyday too. Also once again, I need you to please do me a favor. My kid Max has been doing a radio show called "Kid Power Radio" for awhile now and you should check it out. Tiffany from The Daily Candy called his family friendly radio show "Hilarious!" This is a great show for your kids. It is kind of like a kids version of David Spade's "Showbiz Show" on Comedy Central or Entertainment Tonight mixed in with a little Wayne's World. Max recaps the week in entertainment and gives his take and review of what he liked and didn't like on TV, at the movies, video games, in books and in music and even restaurant reviews. Please go to his site and download the show for your kid. He had a big show recently he interviewed Meatwad from Aqua Teen Hunger Force on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim. And if your kid sends Max an email he'll read it on the air next week. The show can be found at www.kidpowerradio.com and you can email Max at RadioStarMax at Yahoo.com. He has gotten emails from kids from England, Australia, China and even the US. Your encouragement is greatly appreciated. Thanks to you his show is rocketing up the charts!!!
