In bustling Covent Garden in London, Paul van Zyl, originally from South Africa and former Executive Secretary of South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) and his co-founders, have established The Conduit. This private members' club is dedicated to uniting the world's brightest minds in a social enterprise committed to changing the world. In an interview with Biznews, Van Zyl discusses his journey from the TRC, led by Archbishop Desmond Tutu, to co-founding The Conduit. He describes how he embraces the philosophy of Ubuntu and his efforts to introduce this concept to entrepreneurs. Van Zyl explains that The Conduit merges elements of private members' clubs like Soho House with ideas festivals and business incubators, hosting 200 talks annually on global issues with a solutions-oriented approach. The Conduit boasts a diverse community of 3000 members, including philanthropists, CEOs, activists, and entrepreneurs. Speakers have included Nobel Prize winners and other influential global figures like Malala. The Conduit also operates a sister business functioning as a business incubator. Van Zyl reveals that the Conduit has expanded to Oslo and has plans for New York, Geneva, Copenhagen, and Singapore. They also plan to launch an academy to deliver recorded talks to a wider audience. He comments on the global leadership deficit in addressing the world's challenges and reflects on his time with Archbishop Desmond Tutu. I try to live up to the optimism and leadership principles embodied by Archbishop Tutu, and Nelson Mandela, he says. They demonstrated “a kind of leadership that rises above pettiness and partisanship and thinks above the horizon, not on the things that are immediately in front of them.”

In the first mini-series of Good with data we explore one of the most important issues in global development today, the Leave No One Behind Agenda; what it means, why it matters, and how we can make it a reality by improving data and making best use of existing data and evidence. In this episode, we discuss how data about risk can support efforts to leave no one behind in uncertain times and in fragile places. By this, we mean the risk of natural disasters, conflict, diseases and economic shocks resulting in sudden, dramatic and extensive changes to poverty and inequality beyond the individual or household level. For international development actors, this means balancing what we know about who is left behind today with a forward-looking understanding of who may be vulnerable to shocks in the future. We've seen the importance of this all too clearly over the last couple of years, as global poverty reduction went into reverse amid the Covid-19 pandemic. Our guests are: Harsh Desai, a Data and Policy Analyst for Crises and Fragility at the OECD, where among other things he contributes to the flagship States of Fragility report and oversees the production of the multidimensional fragility framework and States of Fragility platform.Roberto Schiano Lomoriello, Programme Management Officer at the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction, where he covers Sub-Saharan Africa. For more on this subject, read our blog: How can data enable effective risk management to mitigate the worst outcomes for people experiencing vulnerability and leave no one behind? And the Global Humanitarian Assistance Report 2021.Roberto recommended reviewing the outputs of the 7th Session of the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction, and reading the Global Assessment Report on Disaster Risk Reduction 2022 for an overall picture of global risk. He also encouraged us to think about how we all create risks in our daily lives, from our patterns of consumption to the way we build homes. Harsh encouraged listeners to think about the link between data production and use, ensuring the data we produce is having the impact that we want, and to read the OECD's  States of Fragility report.Good with data is a production of Development Initiatives, a global organisation harnessing the power of data and evidence to end poverty, reduce inequality and increase resilience. To stay up to date with our work, follow us on Twitter or Linkedin, visit our website, and register for email updates. We value your feedback! We each have a long history of disasters and as such, we each acknowledge we are disaster-prone. However, we don't just accept that fact; we are both actively involved in research and the development of new ways to mitigate, respond to, and recover from those emergencies. In fact, we have shared information with each other, learning from our collective experiences and share a common history of helping one another during times of need. Dr. Nishikawa talks about all of that and much more. “The only way to end systemic inequality is to invest in minorities, the underrepresented, and women.” Access to education, healthcare, clean water, and economic development opportunities remain key priorities for many countries. Entire populations and children are being left behind and marginalized through climate change, disruptions, and globalization. Addressing generational poverty and transformation can take decades. How might we learn from current success stories, work that can scale to other parts of the world in sustainable development? Great ideas and innovation are everywhere, but often access to funding, relationships, and networks present hurdles particularly for young, underrepresented (often female, black, and non-binary) people. How can we access to funding so great ideas can thrive?  In this episode, Taylor Hebble joins the Supply Chain Revolution to discuss two cool organizations addressing these unmet needs in sustainability, sustainable development, and innovation that transforms the world. Taylor Hebble and Sheri Hinish met at Harvard this summer in a learning cohort that trains leaders in the change leadership needed for sustainable development. Through meaningful interactions, Sheri learned about Taylor’s work at Hope for Haiti and SoGal Foundation. Taylor describes some of the initiatives at Hope for Haiti around clean water, education, and healthcare, including an inspiring story of triumph after a small school was destroyed by Hurricane Matthew. How can we truly transform the donor relationship and sustainable development? Listening to what communities need most! We discuss simple solutions and Taylor describes a few including a clean water project at scale. We also explore SoGal Foundation, founded in 2014 by Pocket Sun and Elizabeth Galbut, and its current Black and non-binary peoples cash grants program that provides immediate access to fund incredible ideas. SoGal Foundation is the largest global platform for women and diverse entrepreneurs and investors with over 40 chapters across 5 continents. Its mission is to close the diversity gap in entrepreneurship and venture capital. By bringing access, capital, and education to underprivileged entrepreneurs, SoGal Foundation has grown from a classroom side project to a global movement for women and underrepresented people to live on their own terms. It represents: a fearless, inspirational spirit + a constant, relentless execution mode + a collaborative and supportive community + young women with entrepreneurial ambitions. SoGal provides multiple series of events, including the SoGal Summit, which was the largest female entrepreneurship conference in Southern California. Super excited to bring awareness to this inspiring organization.

In today's episode, I am joined by Alex Litwin. This episode is an hour in length, but I promise you, it's worth every single minute. Alex embodies two really important qualities young people should strive for: Listen to, and be honest with, yourself. Give yourself permission to pursue your honest intentions. Throughout this story, you'll hear a lot about Alex listening to himself and not being afraid to share his goals. Whether it was choosing his major, taking time off from school, wanting to live in San Francisco over New York City, or recognizing burn-out, Alex stays true to himself and lets others know in a professional way. Alex started his career at VaynerMedia and received mentorship from both CEO Gary Vaynerchuk (look him up if you don't know him) and now Chief Heart Officer Claude Silver. We talk about how he got there, what the conversation was like to ask to live in SF and not company headquarters in NYC, and what it was like to move on from the amazing opportunity to a bigger calling. He moved to Israel for some time and took on a demanding job, where he learned why doubling down on your strengths is important. He now works at one of the biggest tech companies you've never heard of. Enjoy! Time Stamps (a few highlights for easy reference): 23:35 minutes - getting a job at VaynerMedia, sitting down with Gary Vaynerchuk, and expressing wanting to move to San Francisco instead of New York City 27:23 - Alex talks about a mentor at Vayner Claude Silver Chief Heart Officer - she helped Alex realize to pursue what he loved 29:24 - How Gary's advice helped me and why Google founder Larry Page looked for passions in people 31:15 how the Chief Heart Officer at Vayner Media became Alex's mentor 32:31 - Alex Gary's authenticity and receiving mentorship from the CEO

From droughts in East Africa to floods in Southern India, the impacts of climate change and natural hazards include death and illness, damage to property and infrastructure, disruption to basic services and the loss of livelihood opportunities. The most marginalised people are among the hardest hit in any crisis, with children and adolescents in poverty often the most affected. Natural hazards can displace children, caregivers and service providers, as well as destroy school buildings, health facilities and transport infrastructure. Parents may also pull their children out of school to support the wider household, through unpaid domestic work and/or paid labour. Such immediate impacts on a child's wellbeing are well known. But how do natural hazards experienced during childhood affect future life stages into adolescence and beyond? What are the implications of natural hazards for child and adolescent poverty trajectories? With the Global Platform on Disaster Risk Reduction a few weeks away, there is an opportunity now to examine the true impact climate change and natural hazards have on the systems and services central to child and adolescent well-being. Drawing on ODI’s recent research on 'Child poverty, disasters and climate change: investigating relationships and implications over a child’s life course', our panellists discuss the effect of natural hazards on the different life stages of children and adolescents living in poverty.

Because users can store, transfer, and switch between fiat and Bitcoin, it has been popular in areas underserved by traditional finance infrastructure, though it has different use cases around the world, which Van Rooyenhappily discusses. Success stories. As an entrepreneur or small business owner looking to carve your own path to prominence, success stories are something you should be paying VERY close attention to. They’re not unattainable, irrelevant tales, and they’re certainly not just another business bragging about its big numbers and rise to fame and fortune. They’re paths to success that always, without fail, hold some kind of strategy, tip, or piece of information that you can bring into your own approach to guiding your projects. On this episode of the Exposure Ninja Digital Marketing Podcast, we go under the hood of an awesome modern success story. Co-founder and Chief Brand Officer of voices.com, Stephanie Ciccarelli, was kind enough to chat with us about the rapid progress of her business. Voices.com is a platform for companies and voiceover artists from over 130 countries to find each other and work together on projects. Stephanie spoke to us just days after a global leader in investment banking, Morgan Stanley, chose to invest in her business. That’s just the latest giant step forward voices.com has taken in recent years, as the brand has quickly grown from just Stephanie and her husband doing their own voiceovers, to a globally recognised brand that over 500,000 voiceover artists and major businesses use to set up projects. So, what does Stephanie put that success down to? As well as that necessary, heavy dose of determination and business savvy, voices.com has benefitted massively from the use of content marketing strategies. From understanding which marketing channels to focus on, to the importance of regular and targeted blog posts, to the tips which saw the website rocket up the search engine results, Stephanie talks us through the strategies which guided her brand to the top. It’s a shining example of how content marketing can, when utilised correctly, give your business a nitrous boost of energy. So take the relevant tips from this success story and turbocharge your own journey to the top! How a Side Project Transformed into a Global Platform for Creatives Brooke Robinson is an Austin, TX native who fell in love with letterforms. Over the years she has taken that love for letters and type and transformed it into a global type powerhouse Instagram account called Goodtype. Her love of letterforms started after taking a class in college. From there, she began collecting resources around her, not to mention the art around Austin played a role in her interests as well. This love led to her wanting to surround herself with the amazing work she would find online and throughout social media. She began screenshotting all these beautiful works to come back to later. Her phone began to fill up so quickly that it sparked the idea to unload all of these images onto an Instagram account. She would share those images and credit the artists. It started as a thing just for her but it quickly grew into something much more than that as the #Goodtype hashtag began to take off. There was an evident interest in the world in hand lettering and her Instagram page quickly became the hotspot as creatives would make a piece and begin tagging Brooke to catch a feature. Next thing you know, she has a following of over ten thousand people and that's when I became aware of the account and got one of my first features. From that feature, it sparked the validation I needed to know I could do something with my art and I'm certain it was the same spark that many other creatives received as well. Doing What Makes You Happy It's safe to say that starting and curating Goodtype has changed her life. It's allowed her to: interact with thousands of creatives all over the world produce a book uniting the best lettering artists internationally create the Goodtype Scholarship Fund make a transition from her day job at Tyler's to pursuing Goodtype full-time now It's been pretty awesome to watch her build this successful platform that was once just for her. Now she is in a position to give back to so many creatives who are looking to take their work to the next level. Things haven't always been easy as there is plenty of stress that comes with working a day job and trying to pursue your side project. She's dealt with plenty of issues that usually revolved around time but when you love something, you find a way to make time to pursue it. One of the most recent struggles was figuring out how to create, curate and ship the first Goodtype Book Vol. 1. She had to figure out how to internationally ship these as sometimes it would cost $60 for global shipping which is insane. However, she made it happen and is already in the works of creating Vol. 2! Strength in Letters At the heart of Goodtype is its motto: "Strength in Letters." The tagline was inspired by someone who created a quick drawing that used the hashtag and it caught her attention. She marinated on it and knew that it needed to be the motto. Brooke states, "We truly are strength in letters in our work and communication within the lettering community. The positivity and encouragement that takes place within this lettering world are amazing." With the growth of this community, it's recently given her the opportunity to bring Goodtype to SXSW in 2017. Here she got to be on a panel discussing "Good Type and its Influence on Style" and how the history of typography and lettering played a monumental role in our modern design. Along with the panel, she organized two hand lettering workshops which were taught by the homie Adam Vicarel. The panel and workshops were a hit and there will no doubt be a bigger Goodtype influence in future SXSW. The Future Vision When asking Brooke what she had planned for Goodtype in the next 5 years, it was clear she had a vision. Due to the awkward void of accessibility in the education side of things, she wants to transform Goodtype into a physical space where creatives can: attend or teach workshops display artwork learn lettering, type and calligraphy find resources on artists or other types of design With know Brooke and her drive, I have no doubt this will all take shape. Words of Advice to Struggling Creatives In closing, I asked Brooke: "What’s one piece of advice you would give to creatives just starting off or in a creative funk?" Her answer is one that can resonate with any creative from amateur to pro. She states, "Stop comparing yourself and focus on yourself and what you’re doing. If it’s making you happy then keep doing it because if you don’t stop, you’re going to improve. Stick with it, and if you have to compare yourself_, do it from a way that you’re learning and improving. If it makes you happy then why would you ever give up?_ Key Takeaways: "You can always find a way to pursue your passion in whatever capacity." - Brooke You’re on the exact time schedule you’re supposed to be on when pursuing your work. Don’t get caught up in the lows, in the end, the challenges help you learn and get ahead. You don't even realize that there are people comparing themselves to you right now_._ If it makes you happy, keep doing it, you're going to improve.
