What's the secret sauce to evangelization? Aside from the Holy Spirit, it's curiosity—genuinely wanting to know and understand the person in front of you. When you show sincere interest in someone's story, experiences, and thoughts, you create space for authentic connection. This curiosity builds trust and opens the door to deeper conversations where faith can be shared naturally. Evangelization isn't about having all the answers—it's about being present, listening, and letting relationships grow organically. To help you do this, our team has developed Elevate! (https://archomaha.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Elevate.pdf), a new small group resource designed for meaningful conversations with friends who aren't ready for a traditional Bible study. In this episode, I sit down with Andy Dejka, the mastermind behind Elevate!, to explore how it fosters deeper dialogue. We discuss its unique four-week, four-person, four-question format, leadership requirements, and the heart behind its creation. Andy also shares his personal call to mission, including how running a stand at a local farmer's market shaped his approach to evangelization. Join us for this insightful conversation on building real relationships and drawing people closer to the Lord. Did you know that on average (https://www.datawrapper.de/_/1DUgL/), there's only one priest for every 2,000 parishioners in our archdiocese? With such a large group to guide, you might wonder how it could be possible for parish leaders to help their people grow in discipleship and move towards sainthood. The Clear Path framework is key to success, but the challenge is greater in our rural communities where a single pastor often handles several parishes. To gain insight on these issues, I sit down with Jake Olson, the evangelization coordinator for Our Catholic Family, a group of parishes in the Northeast corner of Nebraska. Jake describes the clear path as a bowling alley where our ultimate goal (heaven) is like bowling a strike, and the clear path consists of bumpers that keep us aligned towards this goal. Tune in to hear Jake's practical advice and heartfelt experiences. He shows us how small actions and genuine connections can lead to profound spiritual growth and community transformation. Whether you're in a bustling city or a quiet rural town, these timeless principles of evangelization are universally applicable. Episode Highlights: * Relational Evangelization: Learn the art of building authentic friendships and introducing Jesus into existing relationships. * The Clear Path: Discover the three-phase strategy tailored for rural communities to guide individuals towards discipleship and sainthood. * *Jake's Journey: *Be inspired by Jake Olson's personal faith story and his impactful transition from college ministry to serving eight parishes across Cedar and Knox counties. To be a true reflection of God now, a true mirror, an image bearer of God now, in the world now, and to actually share in His purpose as an ambassador, a reflection of God. 2 Corinthians 5: 17 - 21 is a key Scripture in this book that you're brand new, you're not sort of new, you're not that old self, you don't define yourself by that old man, that old nature, that old sin. You have a brand-new nature, you're a brand-new person in Christ, and you have, you get to share in His purpose and walk in His authority right now. And that's the clarion call in this book, is that everything that was lost in the garden has been found in Jesus. Will you take it up? Will you live out of the truth of all that's been found for you, and live with meaning and purpose and power in your life? Because that's where you find your true identity. It's all found in Jesus.---Listen to Lorie Hartshorn, an acclaimed international speaker, author, and Bible teacher being interviewed by Joanna la Fleur. What is your ministry context for small groups? Depending on your church, and the cultural norms where you live, small groups will look different. In this episode, Oliver Hersey and Bill Search, contributors at smallgroups.com talk about types of small groups, and what elements make up a healthy small group. Bill said “Small groups, almost all of them have emphasis on relationships, some sort of emphasis on spiritual growth, Bible study and somewhere woven in is an outward perspective, whether it’s praying for people, or serving as a group.” For some pastors, safety is major concern in planning logistics for small group ministry. A pastor from Nairobi, Kenya said “In the evening it’s not safe for people to be out on certain streets in certain areas. So having an evening small group isn’t going to work for us. What do you recommend?” Oliver pointed to groups like Celebrate Recovery, and Alpha – for new people in the church who need a foundation for their faith. He said “We’re creating these Alpha groups – that are really discussion based groups, safe places for people to explore faith. Do you want to discover or maybe even reignite the small groups ministry of your church? Troy Drake is the founding pastor of Calvary Chapel Meridian, Idaho, having served as its pastor since 2009, and has led their church into this important area of discipleship ministry. Here's a quote from the church website: "Now all who believed were together, and had all things in common, so continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved." (Acts 2:46-47) "The early disciples understood that togetherness is essential for the growth of each person and the church itself by being in close community with other believers. The Christian life is way better in community! And yet, this is the one area that is often lacking in the lives of Christians. "We must intentionally 'do life' together. Rather than just hoping that it will happen, we have chosen to set up a purposeful way for the people in our fellowship to engage with each other. We call them House2House Groups. "What can you expect at an H2H Group? Each group has a meal together, they discuss & apply Sunday’s sermon, and support each other in prayer and practical ways as they seek to join in God’s mission." So tune in, and get some fresh ideas that may trigger fresh vision that will help your fellowship do the one anothers of the New Testament.
Young Life College Divisional Coordinators Pete Hardesty and Cat Ryden encourage staff that focusing on excellence on a smaller scale through the multiplication of small groups can actually help build a more sustainable ministry. Whether focusing on outreach or discipleship, small groups create a space for students to experience community, adventure, and significance. During a season where large events cannot happen, we are reminded that programs don’t make disciples. Disciples make disciples.
A digital ministry strategy session with Peter Bowden discussing congregations, COVID19, and the value of prioritizing moving your congregation into online small groups, integrating worship & small groups, and harnessing power of Zoom breakout groups.
A listening pastor recently asked, “Can you offer advice on starting a small group ministry?" Small groups (we call them “Growth Groups” at RBC) are an incredible way to make disciples and develop leaders. But what about structure and format? How do you identify leaders? In this episode of #RedeemingTruth, pastors Jon Benzinger and Costi Hinn address the topic of small groups and provide practical steps along the way. Please join us for this final talk in this series as we celebrate the achievements of some of the notable women who have been participants in the life of All Souls from its inception in 1819 to the present. The foresight, dedication, wisdom and courage of these key women exemplify the contributions of many women to building this faith community and its multi-faceted ways of impacting our community and our world. These are our role models, our inspiration and our foremothers. Over four sessions we will hear their stories and learn how their spiritual paths as Unitarians and Universalists informed their choices, strengthened their resolve and helped these remarkable women create a more humane and just world. Their fields are diverse; from creating successful philanthropies to crafting enlightening novels, they forged paths and frequently defied conventions. In every sense they represent everything a woman could be and everything a woman should be. The Universalist minister Olympia Brown was the first woman to be ordained by a denomination in the United States in 1862. Nevertheless, the path for women to become UU ministers has faced many challenges over the years. How women found their voices, stood by their faith, and prevailed while finding support by congregations like All Souls is truly inspiring. We honor the women who have served as ministers of this congregation, and the varied, unique gifts they have added to the ministry of All Souls. LAURIE CARTER NOBLE is a writer and independent scholar and was one of the editors of Standing Before Us: Unitarian Universalist Women and Social Reform, 1776-1936. She formerly served as a professor of English at Villanova University and affiliated with Bryn Mawr College. PEGGY MONTGOMERY had a long enjoyable career as a teacher of high school English in Upper Westchester. As a member of All Souls she has served as a Small Group Ministry facilitator and has been active in the Women’s Alliance and the UU United Nations Office. She is currently a Deacon and a member of the team of Lay Pastoral Associates.

Awakenings (August 5, 2018) “...the great end is to awaken the soul, to excite and cherish the spiritual life.” So wrote the early nineteenth century Unitarian minister, William Ellery Channing, about the education of children, but I believe it holds true of many others of us too. In Small Group Ministry we try to make place and a process, for people to come together on a regular basis, to explore that it means to awaken the soul and cherish the spiritual life. In small groups people can develop the trust to explore their own, individual, spiritual paths. Through the sharing of our experiences and thoughts, we learn to listen deeply to one another, and see the holy in the ordinary of our daily lives. Rev. Have you ever wished that there was a miracle formula for small groups ministry? A silver bullet that would guarantee that everyone in your church would be in a biblical Acts 2 kind of small group where people would grow to love God deeply, where lives would be radically transformed, the marginalized would be served, and non-Christians all around them would come to faith in Christ every day? As anyone who has been in ministry for longer than a day knows, there are no quick fixes. In fact, Daniel wrote a terrific new book called, “No Silver Bullets” which lays out 5 microshifts that can produce macro changes, lasting movement in the right direction for your groups ministry and church.
