Alright, we're Living in the End Times and this is the FOURTH and FINAL episode in our series on The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, or as Žižek sometimes puts it, the Four Riders of the Apocalypse. So far in our series we've taken a look at the economy focussing on intellectual property, the biogenetic revolution, nature and the ideology of ecology, and today we'll look at the fourth Horseman of the Apocalypse, the one Žižek locates in the space of the global commons of humanity, what he describes as the explosive growth of social division or new forms of apartheid, new walls and slums... Žižek says we are approaching a whole series of critical points, and the question is: can the global liberal democratic system – the capitalist system – deal with them or not? A special thank you to everyone who has been reaching out to us about this new series, it's been much appreciated! See you in Paris! Ž&…

Love is stronger than fear. What if we really believed it? What if we lived into love and weren't overcome by anxiety? What if, even in the midst of the harrowing realities of our global catastrophes and the mundane realities of our everyday lives—what if we could live in a way that deepens who we are, that connects us to ourselves, to God, to one another? I'm Amy Julia Becker, and this is a podcast about what it means to be human beings who seek love rather than fear, hope rather than cynicism, healing rather than division. In this season, I am excited to talk with Esau McCaulley about wrestling with his humanity as a Black man in America, and with Curtis Chang about the possibilities that open up when we face our own anxiety. Other guests include New York Times columnist Tish Harrison Warren and bestselling author Curt Thompson. We'll talk about disability and culture and spirituality and maybe some politics and, again, about walking with courage along a way of grace and love. The first episode will drop on September 5th. Meanwhile, now is the time to let other people know about this podcast by sharing this trailer with them, leaving a rating or review, and, if you haven't already, subscribing so you can get new content every two weeks. This is the first Explaining History study extra recording for students. In this podcast we hear about the origins of Italian fascism and the experience of striking workers and returning soldiers after 1918. The desire for national unity and social order that had motivated many Italians to fight hardened into violent anti communism when they witnessed chaotic scenes of strikes and anti war protests on arrival home. Recorded in December of 2021:Zuby is an entrepreneur, rapper, coach, podcast host, and the list goes on. Zuby has made an impact on cultures around the world with his unique voice conveying a message of personal resilience and responsibility. He is not afraid to challenge the popular narrative in every sphere of society. In this conversation, Tóti and Zuby discuss the challenges to free speech, woke-ism, and culture.
Eurydice speaks with the experimental writer Mark Leyner about writing the body, and language as an obstacle and a patriarchal weapon of social division and mistrust. We discuss Marriage, Ecstasy, Religion, Parenthood, Love and Relationships, Monogamy, Authority, Truth and Subversion, Mortality and Prophecy, and always the Love of Literature. Mark incorporates arcane esoteric medical references throughout his work. His books include “My cousin my gastroenterologist” “Why do men have nipples?” “Hundreds of questions you'd only ask your doctor” “Why do men fall asleep after sex?” “Let's play doctor: guide to walking talking probing like a real MD” and his latest “Last Orgy of the Divine Hermit” now out in paperback retitled as “Daughter, Waiting for her Drunk Father to Return from the Men's Room.” He doesn't put science over intuition. Nor does he equate science with reason. He juxtaposes people, places and things in a Mad Lit postmodernist manner. At the sentence level, Leyner uses an extravagant vocabulary of prose poetry that makes fun of medical language while curious of medical anatomical vocabulary. In The Tetherballs of Bougainville, Mark's father survives a lethal injection at the hands of the New Jersey penal system, and is freed but must live the rest of his life in fear of being executed, at the discretion of New Jersey.⚡️For more podcast, merch, art, go to https://Eurydice.net For Apple podcast go to https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/speak-sex-w-eve/id1448261953?uo=4 For videos, go to https://www.youtube.com/speaksexwitheveeurydice --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/speaksex/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/speaksex/support

Sir Paul Preston's A People Betrayed: A History of Corruption, Political Incompetence, and Social Division in Modern Spain (Liveright, 2020) is a masterful synthesis that offers a novel way of thinking about the turbulent history of Spain. Preston marshals an impressive amount of secondary and primary evidence to explain why corruption and political incompetence have consistently undermined the progress of Spain and created cleavages within Spanish society, eroding social cohesion and resulting in episodes of frequent violence. In examining these two themes of corruption and political incompetence, Preston avoids merely reproducing stereotypes of Spain as a backward and inherently violent country—the so-called “Black Legend” of Spain—and instead shows, with great nuance and appreciation for irony, the manifold ways that these two factors have decisively shaped modern Spain. Preston, a professor at the London School of Economics, is the author of over a dozen books on the history of twentieth-century Spain. His work is marked by a critical engagement with the history of Spain, elegant prose, and virtuosic command of detail. Preston's scholarship has been showered with many accolades from institutions inside and outside of the UK, and translated into numerous languages, including Spanish, Catalan, German, and Russian. Within Spain, Preston's work is widely read and respected. His 2011 book, The Spanish Holocaust, has been central to informing discussions of historical memory about the Spanish Civil War by providing evidence of the systematic nature of the atrocities committed during this period. Happy Women's History Month! In collaboration with Women's History Month Kingston, we begin the discussion of Silvia Federici's Caliban and the Witch. This week we're discussion section one, "All the World Needs a Jolt," and it's myriad of topics including "Serfdom as a Class Relation," "The Struggle on the Commons," "Liberty and Social Division," "The Heretical Movements," "The Politicization of Sexuality," "The Black Death and the Labor Crisis," and the rise of the State to counter the peasants revolution. Next week, we dive into part 2, "The Accumulation of Labor and the Degradation of Women: Constructing "Difference" in "Transition to Capitalism." Let us know your thoughts and questions!Who's in this conversation?Rakel Stammer is an artist and teacher who primarily works in painting and drawing, but also dabbles in sound, installation, collage, writing, photography, printmaking and performance. Her work has been published in several magazines, anthologies and journals across the world and she has exhibited in Denmark, Sweden and the U.S. She was on the show before, pre-COVID in October 2019, talking about her series “The C%#& (C-word) Drawings” completed during a residency at Deer Creek Collective. Rakel speaks publicly and writes about capitalism, art, trauma, dominance and violence, seen through an anti-capitalist, intersectional feminist lens!Carolita Johnson is a cartoonist (The New Yorker magazine) and illustrator from NYC. She spent 13 years in Paris, France, after graduating from Parson's School of Design with a degree in Fashion Design. In Paris, she earned a masters degree in Modern Letters and Linguistics, and got some (admittedly very idiosyncratic) chops in pre-doctoral Medieval Anthropology, which turned out to be her gateway drug to cartoons and illustration. She is also a writer, has appeared on HBO and NPR, performed in various esteemed settings, is an alumnus of the O+ Festival, and most recently added teaching via SUNY New Paltz to her list of accomplishments.Today's show was engineered by Nick Panken, host of Freedom Highway, AND produced, hosted, and edited by ME, Theresa, so please forgive any hiccups. Our show music is from Shana Falana !!!Feel free to email me, say hello: she@iwantwhatshehas.org** Please: SUBSCRIBE to the pod and leave a REVIEW wherever you are listening, it helps other users FIND IThttp://iwantwhatshehas.org/podcastITUNES | SPOTIFY | STITCHERITUNES: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/i-want-what-she-has/id1451648361?mt=2SPOTIFY:https://open.spotify.com/show/77pmJwS2q9vTywz7Uhiyff?si=G2eYCjLjT3KltgdfA6XXCASTITCHER: https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/she-wants/i-want-what-she-has?refid=stpr'Follow:INSTAGRAM * https://www.instagram.com/iwantwhatshehaspodcast/FACEBOOK * https://www.facebook.com/iwantwhatshehaspodcastTWITTER * https://twitter.com/wantwhatshehas
How do spiritual practices equip us to participate in God’s healing work in the world? Rich Villodas, pastor and author of The Deeply Formed Life, talks with Amy Julia about social divisions, the relationship between inner spiritual formation and outward actions, and God’s healing work within individuals and communities.SHOW NOTES:“Rich Villodas is the Brooklyn-born lead pastor of New Life Fellowship, a large, multiracial church with more than seventy-five countries represented in Elmhurst, Queens.” Connect with Rich online:Website: richvillodas.comFacebook: @rvillodasInstagram: @richvillodasTwitter: @richvillodasOn the Podcast:The Deeply Formed Life by Rich VillodasThe Message: Eugene Peterson’s Bible translationLuke 3-4Thomas Keating, Henri Nouwen, and Jean VanierFamily Systems TheorySexual Character by Marva DawnLiving Gently in a Violent World by Stanley Hauerwas and Jean Vanier“It’s quite liberating—it’s very difficult at first—but it’s quite liberating when you realize, ‘I’m not a human doing, I’m a human being. I can take an extra nap. Or I can delight in or cultivate things that bring me joy.’”“Contemplative prayer for me has been the most important element for how I think about race, how I think about the interior life, how I think about justice...the goal is to be present with God so that I can be present with myself and then be present with my neighbor. For me, contemplative prayer serves as the foundation to be present with those who are difficult to love, to be present with those I disagree with.”“The agony of prayer is that I don’t see fruit in the moment. And I need to be okay with that.”“Who are you allowing to speak into your life? What are the stories you’re opening yourself to? Even in the books that we read, the music that we listen to, the stories that we come across, I think that moving close to someone isn’t necessarily a physical proximity. Sometimes it’s an emotional proximity. Sometimes it’s narrative proximity—trying to understand someone’s story.”“How Christians can participate in the renewal of the world—we can see people as enemies to be conquered or see wounds that need to be healed. And that’s hard. That’s a cruciform way of living. It’s painful. It’s slow.”___Thank you to Breaking Ground, the co-host for this podcast.Head, Heart, Hands, Season 4 of the Love Is Stronger Than Fear podcast, is based on my e-book Head, Heart, Hands, which accompanies White Picket Fences. Something that's considered to be taboo by the media today is the destruction of families. Marriese Jones joins David Gornoski to discuss fatherhood and how restoring families can heal our nation. Jones also talks about his ministry work in prisons and how community building from the ground up, and not top-down coercion, is the path towards reconciliation. Is Black Lives Matter really for race reconciliation? Marriese Jones describes how he was disturbed at what he found on the movement's website and explains why it cannot be an option for God-fearing black people. How can the church help in strengthening the men of our society? How can we heal our society from the ground up with self-sacrifice? Listen to the full episode to find out. I explore several thoughts: - Social Division can often stem from historical disparities in education of wealth that often come from lack of market access due to the powerful using state protection of advantages over the powerless - Overtime these divisions lead to disparities that result in long standing prejudices that take just as long to fix once market access is restored - No social cohesion results in Division that leads to the desire to oppress one another, although too much social cohesion can lead people to being too willing to give up rights paving the way for tyrant later.
