Rita Secauli hosted a radio show discussing the Gospel of Mark, focusing on the story of Jesus healing a demon-possessed man and its spiritual implications. She explored various themes including the power of faith, spiritual battles, God's will, and the importance of self-reflection and righteousness. Throughout the show, Rita incorporated insights from religious scholars, drew parallels to modern life, and emphasized the significance of seeking God's grace and resisting evil. 00:00 Gospel of Mark: Healing and Redemption She highlighted the man's unclean spirit, his inability to be bound, and his self-harming behavior. Jesus' encounter with the man led to the man's healing and the demons entering a herd of swine, causing them to drown. The townspeople, fearing the man's presence, asked Jesus to leave their region. The man, now healed, begged Jesus to accompany him, but Jesus instructed him to return home and share his story. The man complied, and his tale of Jesus' compassion spread throughout the Decapolis, causing amazement among the people. Rita concluded the show with a prayer, asking the Holy Spirit to guide them and cleanse them of their sins. She also mentioned St. Athanathius' commentary on the gospel. 04:43 Faith, Christ's Name, and Effective Connections Rita discussed the power of faith and the use of Christ's name to overcome evil spirits and achieve confidence in life. She used the analogy of knowing a powerful person to gain access to exclusive places, emphasizing the importance of utilizing one's connections effectively. 06:49 Jesus Christ's Power and Worship Rita discussed the spiritual battles and the power of Jesus Christ. She highlighted the difference between worshiping Jesus out of love and fear, using the example of the devil who worshipped Jesus out of fear. She also discussed the unbelief of the Jews who claimed that Jesus cast out demons by the power of the devil, and how this wouldn't make sense as the demons would not obey him. 11:15 St. Bede's Story and Symbolism Rita discussed the story of St. Bede, focusing on the unclean spirit that left a man and entered pigs, causing them to run into the sea. She interpreted the story as a reflection of the town's expulsion of evil and the bringing of distant people closer to God. 14:21 Contemplating Gospel of Mark and Church Rita expressed a desire to delve deeper into the text, emulating the contemplation of St. Bede. Rita also reflected on the rejection of Jesus by some people, likening it to modern-day situations like the media, and how Jesus sends those healed to be his testimony in those places. 19:13 Exploring God's Will and Consequences Rita discussed the concept of God's antecedent and consequent wills, emphasizing that God's original will is to bless and save all people, but he also allows for consequences due to human free will. She highlighted the importance of choosing virtue freely and seeking God's grace to become more virtuous. Rita also prayed for the opportunity to learn from God voluntarily, rather than through life's challenges. 26:47 Self-Reflection, Righteousness, and Spiritual Impact Rita discusses the importance of self-reflection and true righteousness, using the example of Jeremiah to illustrate how one righteous person can have a significant impact. 30:48 Jesus' Power to Heal and Resist Evil Rita discussed the Gospel of Mark and Luke, focusing on the story of a man possessed by demons. She emphasized Jesus' ability to heal the man and others, and how this demonstrates his power to heal all infirmities. 34:48Jesus' Healing and the Power of FaithRita discussed the story of Jesus healing a man possessed by demons, emphasizing the importance of faith and the potential for fear and rejection in the face of miracles. She highlighted the man's fear of losing friends and livelihood due to his association with Jesus, and the importance of humility in acknowledging the power of God.
In this second episode on St. Bede the Venerable (c. 673–735 AD), Dr. Papandrea talks about the literary legacy of this Doctor of the Church. Bede is not only considered the “father of English history,” but also the “father of English education.” Although he is now most famous for his Ecclesiastical History of England, his contribution to the Church is actually much greater than that. Rita discussed the Gospel of Mark, chapter 3, verses 7-12, emphasizing the importance of faith and the Holy Spirit's guidance in understanding the text. She also explored the nature of Jesus Christ, the role of humility and forgiveness in overcoming evil, and the teachings of Saint Bede about Arianism. 00:00 Exploring Gospel of Mark With Faith She emphasized the importance of faith in touching Jesus, as explained by St. Augustine of Hippo. Rita also highlighted the significance of the Holy Spirit's guidance in understanding the text and the Church Fathers' interpretations. She concluded the segment with a prayer, asking for the Holy Spirit's assistance in interpreting the text and becoming a clearer version of Jesus. 03:23 Faith, Dedication, and the Power of Love Rita emphasized the importance of faith and dedication in prayer, contrasting it with the actions of those who arrested Jesus, whose touch was not driven by faith. She encouraged the audience to reflect on the kind of faith they have, whether it's just a profession or one driven by love. Rita also highlighted the need to open up all areas of one's life to Christ for healing and to experience miracles. 13:55 Exploring Jesus' Qualities and Humility Rita discussed the nature of Jesus Christ, emphasizing his qualities of love, joy, peace, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. She referenced the commentary of Cornelius a Lapide, who noted that the unclean spirits recognized Jesus as the Son of God due to his miracles and the fulfillment of prophecies. 19:17 Humility, Forgiveness, and Conquering Evil Rita discussed the importance of humility and forgiveness in overcoming evil, using the example of Saint Leo the Great's sermon on the Passion. She emphasized the need to love those who hate us and pray for them, as this is the essence of conquering evil. Rita also discussed the role of Peter, James, and John in the early Christian church, and how the Pharisees accused Jesus of breaking the Sabbath. 25:33 Arianism and the Nicene Creed Explained Rita discussed the teachings of Saint Bede about Arianism, a theological belief that arose in the early 4th century, which denied the full divinity of Christ. She explained that Arianism was condemned as heresy by the Catholic Church in the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD and later affirmed in the Council of Constantinople in 381 AD. Rita also mentioned that the Nicene Creed, recited in the Catholic mass today, was formulated in response to Arianism to affirm the full divinity of Christ. 32:05 Approaching Jesus With Humility and Love Rita discussed the importance of approaching Jesus with humility and receptiveness, rather than being preoccupied with worldly matters. She emphasized the distinction between those who merely approach Jesus and those who truly touch him with love and faith. She suggested that seeking to enter the presence of God in peace can lead to healing and calmness in one's heart. Rita ended the conversation by thanking everyone for joining and encouraging them to connect with her on social media.

He was a soldier in the Roman army and, according to the venerable Bede, was brought to faith in Christ by a fugitive priest to whom he gave shelter. The saint exchanged clothes with the priest, allowing him to escape and ensuring his own martyrdom. Some writers, including St Bede, place his martyrdom during the reign of Diocletian (286-303). Saint Alban's tomb was venerated as early as 429 by St Germanus of Auxerre. The town of Verulamium is either his home town or the place of his martyrdom; near it a monastery was founded, around which grew the English town of St Albans.

13 You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt lose its savour, wherewith shall it be salted? It is good for nothing any more but to be cast out, and to be trodden on by men.Vos estis sal terrae. Quod si sal evanuerit, in quo salietur? ad nihilum valet ultra, nisi ut mittatur foras, et conculcetur ab hominibus. 14 You are the light of the world. A city seated on a mountain cannot be hid.Vos estis lux mundi. Non potest civitas abscondi supra montem posita, 15 Neither do men light a candle and put it under a bushel, but upon a candlestick, that it may shine to all that are in the house.neque accedunt lucernam, et ponunt eam sub modio, sed super candelabrum, ut luceat omnibus qui in domo sunt. 16 So let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.Sic luceat lux vestra coram hominibus : ut videant opera vestra bona, et glorificent Patrem vestrum, qui in caelis est. 17 Do not think that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets. I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill.Nolite putare quoniam veni solvere legem, aut prophetas : non veni solvere, sed adimplere. 18 For amen I say unto you, till heaven and earth pass, one jot, or one tittle shall not pass of the law, till all be fulfilled.Amen quippe dico vobis, donec transeat caelum et terra, jota unum aut unus apex non praeteribit a lege, donec omnia fiant. 19 He therefore that shall break one of these least commandments, and shall so teach men, shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven. But he that shall do and teach, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.Qui ergo solverit unum de mandatis istis minimis, et docuerit sic homines, minimus vocabitur in regno caelorum : qui autem fecerit et docuerit, hic magnus vocabitur in regno caelorum. Venerable Bede (673-735), the first English historian, was consecrated to God from childhood. He became a Benedictine monk in the monestery of Jarrow in Northumberland, and trained there some six hundred scholars. His Ecclesiastical History of England is a treasure to scholars and lovers of spiritual life alike; but his principal study was ever the Bible. When this great Englishman died, on Ascension Day, 735, he had just finished dictating the final sentence of a translation of the Gospel of St John.

Thursday of the Seventh Week of Easter Memorial of St Gregory VII, St Mary Magdalen de Pazzi, St Bede the Venerable John 17:20-26 Jesus raised his eyes to heaven and said: ‘Holy Father, I pray not only for these, but for those also who through their words will believe in me. May they all be one. Father, may they be one in us, as you are in me and I am in you, so that the world may believe it was you who sent me. I have given them the glory you gave to me, that they may be one as we are one. With me in them and you in me, may they be so completely one that the world will realise that it was you who sent me and that I have loved them as much as you loved me. Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, so that they may always see the glory you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world. Father, Righteous One, the world has not known you, but I have known you, and these have known that you have sent me. I have made your name known to them and will continue to make it known, so that the love with which you loved me may be in them, and so that I may be in them.'

Wisdom from the Abbey–Mother Hilda–St Bede's Angels (Mother Hilda retells a beautiful story told about the Venerable Bede, a monk in Northumbria who died about 735 AD and how this near blind monk was tricked into speaking to a non-existent audience in the monastery church. At the end of his talk, it is said that a whole choir of angels filled the church, and they called out, Amen, Amen, Venerable Bede. Mother Hilda says that very often we too get taken for a ride when someone asks us for help. They use us, or our kindnesses are not repaid. Yet knowing how dear you are to God, a choir of angels in God's name calls out in your house, on your street, or on the bus, or in the shopping mall, Amen, Amen, and calls your name. Listen for them this week.)

Twenty-six Sunday of Ordinary Time - Luke 16: 19-31 Unfinished Business: It's thirty years since Anglican women were first ordained as priests in Australia. Australian Women Preach celebrates this anniversary, while acknowledging there are still Anglican dioceses and other Christian denominations that limit or refuse to acknowledge women's ordained ministry. The Reverend Dr Ruth Mathieson took up the role of Principal of St Francis Theological College in the Anglican Diocese of Southern Queensland in July this year and enjoys living on site in Milton. Prior to this she was the Parish Priest of St Bede's, Semaphore, in the Diocese of Adelaide, where she would enjoy walking the coastal paths at sunrise. Now she follows the paths along the Brisbane River shared with commuters and cyclists. Ruth was an adjunct lecturer in New Testament Studies at St Barnabas College in Adelaide for ten years and was awarded a university medal for her PhD entitled Dress Code for Heaven? Exploring the Textures of the Parable of the Royal Wedding Feast (Matthew 22:1-14). Born and bred in South Australia (apart from three years overseas as a child in Winchester, UK and Ingolstadt, Germany), Ruth has lived most of her adult life in Adelaide. She was ordained 25 years ago and has served as a priest in both schools and parishes and as archdeacon in both the north and then the west of the Diocese of Adelaide. She is the mother of two young adult children.

Though his History is the greatest legacy Bede has left us, his work in all the sciences, especially in Scripture, should not be overlooked. During his last Lent, Bede worked on a translation of the Gospel of Saint John into English, completing it the day he died. But of this work “to break the word to the poor and unlearned” nothing remains today. All Saints of God, pray for us!

Her mother was a doctor and her father rose to be a general. She herself finished college in St Bede's, Simla, and then came to Delhi to do a post grad degree in psychology. She never finished it, and wonders what life would have been like if she had. Instead, she headed to Allahabad to sit for the SSB, where candidates applying to join the army as officers gradually get weeded out over the course of a week. The sixteenth batch of women officers, she won the gold medal for the best lady cadet, and went on to join the Army Ordnance Corps that to a layperson is all about weapons and ammunition. Rocket launchers interested her the most! Her first posting was in an ammunition depot near Ludhiana, where she was the security officer responsible for everything from rifles to Bofors shells. After six years, she left (in those days women didn't have permanent commission and she didn't see a future here), and joined the corporate world, working across companies like Google and Microsoft.Quickly she realised the corporate life was not for her, and she went to the UK to do a masters degree in Poverty Reduction. Her longest career stint has been in the social sector, with organizations like STiR, UnLtd, and J-Pal, a set up founded by Nobel laureates Abhijeet Banerjee and Ester Duflo. From early in life, so-called alternate systems of healing was something her father dabbled in, taking her to naturopathy centres as early as 1 and half years old!In her early 40s, she realised she needed to revisit naturopathy to develop a deeper connection with her own body. In fact connection is something she talks about frequently, whether with oneself, the community, or with Nature. --The discussion on this episode of the podcast is all about naturopathy and things that Rupinder has experienced as an ex army officer. O learned master whose life itself was as a monastery, consumed as you were by study and teaching and writing and prayer, who till the very end spoke the name of the Lord in all your words and deeds – pray that the incense of your life will rise unto the throne of God and intercede for us here below who are so far from His presence, from knowledge of His providence and remembrance of His sacrifice. How will we find ourselves one with the Lord of Creation and ascend to His glory if you do not pray for us, O blessed soul so united to His will, so held within His Hand and breathing forth His name?

This podcast from the non-profit Human Enquiry Project is a talk I gave to all 900 students at Our Lady and St Bede's school, in Stockton-on-Tees. It explores how our current education may help us get a job, but to be an excellent human being who has happy relationships, meets life's challenges without getting stressed and lives with a sense of peace, we need to awaken our own inner intelligence. This comes naturally when we understand ourselves and how our minds work. This needs to be part of education.
‘Into the Deep’ weekly reflections in Lent We live in a world that often prioritises the ephemeral and the superficial over more meaningful and enduring values. Countless distractions keep us from candid self-examination or quiet contemplation. In Lent, we are invited to turn away from all that distracts us and to reorient ourselves towards God; to examine and reintegrate our lives by focusing on divine rather than human priorities; to plunge into the deep, restorative waters of God’s love and mercy. And we are offered beautiful, ancient tools to help us enter into this gracious season of reflection and preparation—tools of prayerfulness, simplicity and generosity. These weekly reflections are provided as an opportunity to clear some time and space from distractions this Lent and go deeper: deeper into the paschal mystery, deeper into relationship with God, deeper into truth and life. -- Episode 1: Jesus in the wilderness In this first episode, Ria Greene reflects on Jesus’ time in the wilderness. Ria says that the setting for Jesus’ time in the wilderness offers pilgrims of today a way to critically consider and prepare for the season of Lent by examining what it means for us to live in right relationship with God, with one another, and with creation. Ria has worked in Catholic education for more than twenty years, with a focus on religious education and faith formation, but has also worked as a parish catechist and sacraments coordinator, and has completed further studies in religious education and theology. She teaches a senior religious studies class at St Bede’s College, where she is Deputy Principal.
