In this special episode of The Marvelists, hosts Peter Melnick and Eddie Wilson sit down with acclaimed comic book artist, writer, publisher, and educator Stephen R. Bissette for a wide-ranging conversation that bridges the worlds of mainstream comics, independent publishing, and creative rebellion. Best known for his groundbreaking work on DC's Saga of the Swamp Thing alongside Alan Moore and John Totleben, Bissette brought a revolutionary level of detail, horror, and ecological depth to the title in the 1980s. But his career extends far beyond the Bayou: from co-founding the influential horror anthology Taboo to self-publishing the ambitious Tyrant series—a meticulously researched, life-cycle epic starring a Tyrannosaurus rex that remains a high-water mark in creator-owned comics. Whether you're a Marvel fan curious about the wider industry, a Swamp Thing aficionado, or simply love stories about dinosaur comics and artistic integrity, this episode delivers insights from one of the medium's most thoughtful and uncompromising voices. Expect plenty of behind-the-pages stories, reflections on the evolution of the industry, and why dinosaurs (and swamp monsters) still rule.

When observing comic books, the miracles come in big or small ways. This week on the podcast, we're discussing a resurrection we previously thought unimaginable. Stephen R Bissette, who gained legendary status working on titles like Saga of the Swamp Thing, crafted his masterpiece in the mid-nineties. Tyrant was meant to run fifty issues or more, but only four saw print before disaster struck the industry, and Bissette pulled up stakes, leaving comics to focus on family and a more financially stable situation. We've spent years searching for Tyrant in the dollar bins, picking up an issue here and there. As much as we love Bissette's work on Swamp Thing, Tyrant represents the artist at his purest, most thematically forward. Even at four issues, Tyrant is a masterpiece, expressing the agony and beauty of life, as we follow a Tyrannosaurus Rex from conception to birth. It's easy to mourn the story we did not get, but we must also celebrate the story we did. It is enough, and thankfully, we're not the only ones who thought so. Chris Stevens, of the newly formed Lighthouse Press, convinced Bissette that now was the time to re-release Tyrant in both a Complete Edition and a Deluxe Artist Edition. Stevens also hired cartoonist Jim Rugg (who recently shot a Stacks video with us) to oversee the production of these new additions. Together, they'll hopefully bring a massive new readership to Tyrant and give this lost masterpiece the recognition it never got. We're extremely happy to have Stephen R Bissette, Jim Rugg, and Chris Stevens on the podcast this week. Together, we place Tyrant in the context of its creation and explore why now is the time for its resurrection. We discuss the themes Bissette excavates in Tyrant and where the story was going before he had to pull the plug. We also discuss the heartbreak of pulling the plug and all the humanity within and without its pages. The 90s comic book scene. You had to be there. The Image Revolution. Pouches. Rob Liefeld and Spike Lee making Levi's commercials together. The Death of Superman was going to pay Brad's way into college somehow. The distribution implosion. The speculator flight. Devastation. Apocalypse. Something our earthbound dinosaurs also understood quite well. Please recognize the miracle that is Tyrant's resurrection by visiting the Lighthouse Press Kickstarter page and signing up for notification of its official launch. Also, follow Stephen R Bissette on BlueSky and Facebook. Follow Jim Rugg on Instagram. Follow Lighthouse Press on Instagram and BlueSky. Gene and cohost Tim Swartz feature Gary D. Rhodes. He is a renowned film historian and author with a passion for uncovering the forgotten stories of horror cinema. He's a world expert on Bela Lugosi and Dracula, and will reveal the secrets of the tragic life story of this world-famous horror film legend. He will also talk about his book, "Weirdumentary: Ancient Aliens, Fallacious Prophecies, and Mysterious Monsters From 1970s Documentaries." The book unlocks the secrets of the strangest cinematic phenomenon of the 1970s. It's the ultimate guide to the bizarre, the unexplained, and the wildly entertaining films and television programs that blurred the line between fact and fantasy. "Weirdumentary" examines dozens of movies and TV series, sold to the unsuspecting public as documentaries, beginning with "Chariots of the Gods" (1970) and ending with "The Man Who Saw Tomorrow" (1981). Leonard Nimoy's "In Search Of" makes an appearance, and so does Orson Wells in his late-career role of sinister yet skeptical narrator. Although listeners to The Paracast know about their factual basis, many of these shows and movies featured spurious experts, questionable evidence, and low-budget dramatization. Acclaimed comic book artist, writer, and historian Stephen R. Bissette, best known for his groundbreaking work on DC Comics' "Swamp Thing" alongside Alan Moore, provides the foreword.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-paracast-the-gold-standard-of-paranormal-radio--6203433/support.

March 5th, 1984. Forty years ago, three thousand copies of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 hit the newsstands. The title was impossible to ignore. Born from a joke between fresh collaborators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, it sparked an instantaneous passionate response. Many quickly dismissed the concept or rolled their eyes, but those who actually read that first issue recognized the love for the medium within. Eventually, cartoons and toys would follow, and a phenomenon occurred that truly has not been replicated in the comics space since. This week's podcast is our "Thank You" to Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird. We return to those Mirage Studios' early years, examining three critical comics that would shape and define the characters: the Leonardo micro-series one-shot and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles issues ten and eleven. These stories would form the climax of the 1990 movie adaptation and propel the brothers into a momentous clash with The Shredder in "Return to New York" and its "City at War" aftermath. No Love Expert guides our hands this week as we draw lessons directly from the comics. Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird poured so much life into their stories, and the result is a beautiful mirror reflecting our hopes and fears. In these pages, the reader exists already; they merely must find themselves. Mirage Studios published these comics between December 1986 and June 1987. They were written and penciled by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, inked and toned by Eastman, Laird, Stephen R. Bissette, Michael Dooney, and Ryan Brown, and lettered by Steve Lavigne. You can currently read them via IDW Publishing's massive Compendium Vol. 1. As always, Omnibus, the Digital Comic Store and Reader, sponsors our Referrals segment. This week, we selected two comic book titles on the site that satisfy this episode's themes. We won't spoil what they are here, but if you click the links below, you'll be immediately escorted to those books. Talking with us about 1964's First Men in the Moon, we're honoured to have as our guest horror legend Stephen R. Bissette, who although perhaps best known one as of the primary collaborators with Alan Moore on the seminal 80s run of Swamp Thing, has produced a significant corpus of writing on the horror genre in all media over the space of several decades, including, most recently, an exhaustive study of David Cronenberg's early highlight The Brood. We discuss the one time Nigel Kneale shared a credit with Ray Harryhausen, why these films have resonated with us since childhood, how stop motion animation takes us right into the uncanny valley, and whether First Men in the Moon is really the first fully realised alien culture in cinema.  And by the way, you can find Jon's other podcast, Due Signori in Giallo, at duesignori.cast.rocks.

On July 18, 2021 the AiPT SciPhiFest Conference included a 45 min segment of my  interview with author and comic-book artist Stephen R. Bissette (who is probably best known for his work on the Alan Moore run of the DC comic Swamp Thing). The interview is about Stephen's book CRYPTID CINEMA (http://bit.ly/CryptidCinema) with a special focus on the little-known touring film used by Roger Patterson to promote (and profit from) his famous alleged Bigfoot film. This is the extended cut of that interview. The interview was video streamed and if you want to watch  this discussion rather than just listen to it, you will find a link in the show notes. Be sure to like and share the video on YouTube and social media if you enjoy it. We're working to grow our video footprint and your engagement through liking and sharing helps that effort. The artist describes the magical alchemy that occurred between him, John Totleben, and Alan Moore in 1983, and how their desire to make monster comics radically altered the landscape of the art form. More importantly, we converse on the re-creation of Abigail Arcane and her sensuous union with the plant who dreamed he was a man - "The Rites of Spring," which may just be the most erotic and romantic comic book ever produced. For those wanting a little more context to this conversation, be sure to listen to the 34th episode of CBCC, where Brad & Lisa breakdown "The Rites of Spring" as well as Swampy & Abby's relationship in detail. Also, you can hear Brad & Steve talk about David Cronenberg's "The Brood" and the 660-page book Stephen wrote on the film over at the In the Mouth of Dorkness podcast. You should also watch the career-spanning conversation Steve had with the boys of Cartoonist Kayfabe. It seems the Making Comics Gutter Talk podcast has its first ritual and we couldn't ask for a better one. You see, last year for Halloween we opened the show with a Vincent Price reading of a classic Edgar Allan Poe tale, which was followed by a fantastic talk with one of the masters in the horror movie and comic genre, Stephen R. Bissette. We had so much fun putting that podcast out that we decided it was imperative this become a regular thing. So we made that happen. You're welcome. Last year we opened with Vincent Price masterfully reading Poe's "The Raven." This year we have Vincent Price reading Poe's "The Tell-Tale Heart." While there may be some who can read a Poe story out loud, not many can give it the respect and justice it deserves like Vincent Price. Following that Adam is joined again by Stephen Bissette to discuss what he's been up to the last year, and as it turns out, he's quite the busy guy. In the conversation they discuss what is needed to create a top-notch horror story, whether it's in the comic form or otherwise. Stephen brought up what it was like to work with the amazing Alan Moore and how he crafted scripts for artists to work with. Needless to say, mind = blown. So put your scary mask on and download this episode with Stephen Bissette. When you're done listening, the amount of tricks and treats in your arsenal will be all the candy you'll need. You know, until next Halloween when we get to do this again.
