In the last episode (Part 1), we explained what the Superwoman Complex is and in this episode we are going to explain what the CURE is for those who are stuck in the Superwoman Complex. So, the superwoman complex is the belief that we need to do it ALL as mothers. We need to show up perfectly and fully at all times in every role, including but not limited to our role as mother, wife, house manager, career woman, daughter/sister, community member, and more. It is that unnatural, perfectionist voice of the Inner Critic that pushes and bullies us to success.  So, today, in Part 2, I discuss 4 main points that form the cure for the Superwoman Complex and that rest on the cornerstone point, the fundamental point, that underlies the entire cure. That is, speaking to ourselves in the voice of the loving Inner Mother on our way to success. Without this, these other 4 points are moot. Now, those 4 points that form the cure: Treat time as your friend. It is about quality not quantity. It's not enough to know your values, you must LIVE them every single day. Even if it's 10 minutes at a time. It's not about WHAT you're doing, it is about HOW you're doing it: the energy that you're in and the way you show up in the world. Be aware and be willing to meet your own NEEDS.

Today, you're going to learn all about the superwoman complex, what it is and how to know if you're experiencing it. This is important because many of us will go through the superwoman complex at some point in our lives and many of us are living with it RIGHT NOW! We think that feeling overwhelmed, feeling exhausted, and not understanding how everybody else is doing it, is just a normal part of the motherhood process. I'm here to tell you that it's NOT, and it doesn't have to be that way. So, what is the superwoman complex? The superwoman complex is the belief that we need to do it ALL as mothers. We need to show up perfectly and fully, at all times, and in every role. I will cover 4 major points that you need to know in order to understand the superwoman complex: We are living within “the rigged system” which sets us up for failure. We don't account for our needs. We don't accept or understand the process that we're in as mothers. We don't process our emotions and instead we “buffer” them away. Stay tuned for next week, Part 2, where I walk you step-by-step through the process I take my clients through in order to CURE the superwoman complex.

Ep 6 The Superwoman Complex & How It Destroys Us

T.A.P.T.

Play Episode Listen Later May 25, 2021 20:35

In this week's episode, we discuss the concept of the Superwoman Complex. The dark side of the Superwoman complex is the fear of showing vulnerability. But at best, doing everything on our own is a recipe for stunted growth and, at worst, a path to burnout. Being continually caught up in the daily whirlwind often leads to losing perspective and a clear, current view of your market or field. Being head down all the time leads to isolation. As seasoned multitaskers, we too often put multiple families and business needs ahead of our wellbeing, which means support systems don't exist when an emergency arises. Asking other people for help is hard. Yet overcoming this behavior and its underlying fears is essential for personal and business growth. Key takeaways from today's episode: 1. Having a fear of vulnerability and overcompensating by being super independent can lead to burnout and stunted growth. 2. Having a head-down mentality to just focus on success can come at the cost of not looking up and seeing what you're missing, including connection with other people. 3. Our field adds an extra layer of pressure to be tough enough to hang. Any sign of weakness can be interpreted as not being strong enough or competent enough to be a "good social worker." 4. We can learn to set our boundaries. We don't always have to give, even if the people we are serving look like us. 5. Be conscious that no amount of accolades are enough for some of us. We may always feel like we have to overperform just to "make it" or be seen as good enough in a system of white supremacy. This tendency doesn't only apply to work. It also impacts our dating/marriage and other interpersonal relationships. Ask yourself what would happen if we didn't do everything or stopped being a "superwoman"? What would fall apart? Would it really? For questions and share outs and further discussion please contact us at therapistsarepeopletoo@gmail.com. What impact does helping individuals find their voice and self-publish have on society? What is the importance of reading a book about anti-racism in this time? What is the importance of learning tools to address the discomfort of discussing anti-racism? Why is it important to support Black owned businesses? In this series on healthcare and social disparities, Dr. Jill Wener, a board-certified Internal Medicine specialist, meditation expert, and tapping practitioner, interviews experts in multiple fields relating to social justice and anti-racism. In this episode, Jill interviews Dr. Nicole Swiner, a family practice doctor and owner of Swiner Publishing. Dr. Swiner details how she inadvertently became a business owner and created the #nosuperwoman movement. This movement aims to show women that self care and work/life integration is a necessity. Dr. Swiner notes how her publishing company helps to amplify Black voices and highlights the reasons for supporting Black owned businesses. Dr. Swiner discussed the importance of Jill's upcoming Conscious Anti-Racism book, which is being published by Swiner Publishing, and why she feels so called to publish books about social justice. What a powerful conversation! I feel like every person needs to hear and understand how their inner guide is the best guide and that you get no awards for trying to save everyone. NONE! In fact, you can't save everyone, we all have our paths. Being SUPERWOMAN could delay your own path, which is the higher level of service to self, the divine and others. An educator turned full-time entrepreneur, basketball mom, gymnastics mom, twin mom, mother of seven children (yes, you read that right), Tanai still finds time to inspire moms to travel the world. In 2013, Tanai moved her then three children to Abu Dhabi to build her “American dream” outside of America. While abroad, her children were able to learn Arabic, excelled in school and sports, had a live-in nanny, and traveled the world. Since returning to the US in 2016, she has continued to maintain the goal of granting her children a new passport stamp every 100 days. In 2019, Tanai got married and grew her family from four to seven people to love and in 2020, she made the decision to quit teaching and pursue her dreams full time! Are you struggling to take your business to the next level? Perhaps you have a killer marketing strategy and a business that fulfills and excites you. Yet for some reason, your prospects aren’t buying what you’re selling. One of the most common reasons for this problem is that you don’t believe.  If you don’t believe in your offerings, your prospects’ abilities, or yourself, your customers won’t either. The truth is, to sell more you need to believe harder. But it’s not as simple as showing up for your business every day. Belief takes more than just showing up, and there are three different categories of belief that you need to focus on.  Keep Reading >> In my coaching, I see tons of women entrepreneurs who lack belief in these different categories and it directly impacts their sales. Some of you are marketing an offering you don’t actually want to deliver. Some of you don’t believe your prospects can get the results you want to guarantee. And many of you simply don’t believe that you have the power to do the selling.  In today’s episode, I’m sharing the three categories of belief that you need to have in order to sell more. The harder you believe in these categories, the more you will sell. I give some real examples of each belief and the ways you can work through your limitations. And, I take you through an exercise to evaluate your level of belief in each category so you know where you can improve. If you want your prospects to believe what you’re marketing so you can sell more, start with believing harder. Today on the Power + Presence + Position Podcast: The 3 types of beliefs that you must cultivate in order to sell more. How to elevate your belief across these 3 categories. Why I always pay attention to feelings of freedom and constriction. Why so many of us have a Superwoman Complex and how it affects our teams.  How believing in yourself is a learned skill.  An exercise for evaluating your belief levels and ways to improve. Today, let's unpack two big questions for our happiness and success - The great Work:Life Divide: what is the debate really about? AND Work:Life Balance: does it even exist & do we want it? In considering the Work:Life distinction, we look into current Workers' Rights, including hours of work, flexi-time, Menopause policies and #TheRightToDisconnect. We draw some further insights from the Happiness Parenting Gap study and what we're experiencing now through the Covid-19 pandemic as we all learn to #WorkFromHome. By exploring these blurring boundaries and spillage as we chase high engagement productivity levels, we ask ourselves if Stanford University's Ideal Worker archetype is even useful to us, especially in light of learnings from Jon Kabat-Zinn's ground-breaking Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Programme. Then, we dive into Work:Life Balance – does it even exist & do we want it? We look at balance in light of our mother's kitchen scales & smooth-running Wheels of Life and how such useful coaching concepts can become instruments of our own torture! We get to decide now if we really want to continue to buy into the Superwoman Complex or if there's a better role model for you now in Midlife – especially with so many great woman leading the world today. In our self-coaching we can ask ourselves more about what we want in our Midlife, how do we want to live inside, inside our heads and hearts, how do we want to show up in the world, how do we want to lead? Hi everyone! On this week's episode, I get to speak with the “No Superwoman” doc- Dr. C. This interview quickly turned into a fabulous chat that spanned a bunch of topics including our connection as dance moms of two little girls and reigning in our “tiger mom” tendencies. We also spoke about why tackling being a supermom is not something we can do alone and the importance of getting support and guidance from others. This aligned so perfectly with why group coaching is essential for moms of color, and many of you know, I run my Mama First coaching program for helping working moms of color experiencing stress learn how to invest in themselves. Also, if you are listening to this episode on November 3rd, I actually have a Masterclass tonight at 8:30PM Eastern where I will be teaching my framework on “How Working Moms of Color Can Stop Supermom Stress and Avoid Burnout.” Listen at the end for how to register! I brought my girls Shana (IG: @ShanaSpeaksLCSW), Jasmine (IG: @Jymmyyy) and Tiyana (IG: XO.Tiyana) back for Part 2 to finish up the “Superwoman Complex”, which is how African American women normalize everything...including trauma and trying to hold on to the society vision of "you gotta be strong" "you gotta keep the family together" "you'll get through it" while trying to manage every day life. With that being said, we discussed self approval, and the mental and emotional well-being of self-acceptance verses not having it and different ways we can encourage women who struggle with self-belief and how to move away from it. Understanding and describing what self love is to you and how caring for ourselves should be our highest priority in life. Les Brown, motivational speaker said, “Ladies have been groomed to be sacrificial lambs, putting their selves on the back burner in deference to their children’s dreams, husbands dreams and families [....] then become resentful, angry and bitter." Why aren’t we taught to love and take care of ourselves? Why is meeting the needs of others more important than self love? I want to break down the barrier of self love vs selfish. Also we raise the question of self sabotage. What is self sabotaging? Are we guilty of self sabotaging behaviors in our own life? Procrastination, temptation, food cravings, substance abuse, sex, unhealthy relationships. How do people overcome self sabotaging. Ticia The Diva “This Is For My Ladies”

Episode 18: I brought my best friend license clinical therapist and social worker Shana Simmons to discuss the "Superman Complex" concept and how African American women normalize everything.....including trauma and try to hold on to the society vision of "you gotta be strong", "you gotta keep the family together", "you'll get through it" while trying to manage every day life. We openly discuss vulnerability between women and how we dim our light so we are less intimidating to others, the act of being brave all the time within your own creativeness, emotional neglect specifically in the black family and the disconnect of the family, getting out the comfortableness of unforgiveness and the "Transparency vs Ethics" among the professional therapist. In that, we discuss the "ride or die" phrase or "struggle love" we discuss the video and article about Pastor John Gray stating, "My wife has endured more pain birthing me than both of our children. She has sacrificed, these last eight years, uncovering the painful areas of my manhood and covering the areas that could have exposed me." Have women taken on roles of raising boys into manhood while sacrificing the development of ourselves for the development of their egos? --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/ticia-the-diva/support

[embedyt] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EaewtxBjHdE[/embedyt] Meet our Guest: Voted as 1 of 10 Best Doctors in North Carolina in 2017, C. Nicole Swiner, MD/AKA DocSwiner, is a family physician, 2-time best-selling author, 3-time best-selling publisher, national speaker, wife and Mom of 2. She loves taking care of the family as a whole—from the cradle to the grave. Her medical interests include Minority Health, Women's Health and Pediatrics. For her undergraduate education, she attended Duke University and went to medical school at the Medical University of South Carolina, in Charleston, SC. She's lived in the Triangle since finishing residency at the UNC-Chapel Hill and is a co-owner of Durham Family Medicine. She also continues teaching UNC medical students and residents as an Adjunct Associate Professor. Her first book, How to Avoid the Superwoman Complex discusses the false belief that one person can be all things to all people, perfectly. It can have devastating effects—emotionally, mentally and physically. She hopes this book will serve as a guide for recovering superwomen (and supermen) everywhere to avoid said negative effects, and to make it a little easier and less stressful to take care of one's self and family. Her second book (released August 2016), The Superwoman Complex: A Follow-Up Visit, is an international best seller and takes a more in depth look into how we fix the issues identified and defined in her first book. Her 3rd book, the first collaborative one, is also an Amazon best seller—Thinking About Quitting Medicine. It is a story of 13 doctors and clinicians that strive to succeed in passions both within and outside of the practice of medicine. Since 2009, she has been speaking locally and nationally for organizations, groups, high schools and universities about stress management, health matters and self-care. She does weekly broadcasts online and on Periscope with PeriGirlsTV, that are interactive and live. She enjoys helping others and doing events in a Q&A format to allow people to ask those questions they may be afraid to ask anyone else. Along with speaking and teaching, she added publisher self-publishing consultant to her list of duties, as friends and colleagues around her became inspired to write and publish themselves. She published the above-mentioned 3 books through this company. Through Swiner Publishing Company, she serves as a liaison and “accountability partner” for those wanting to follow in her footsteps to begin a new career in book writing, marketing, social media broadcasting and speaking. In January 2016, she launched her inaugural women's health conference, called “New Year, New You,” and hosted a sold out crowd filled with 20+ vendors, live music, over 14 speakers, 2 panel discussions and giveaways. She plans to hold this annually on Duke's campus. She can be contacted and all other information is available on www.docswiner.com.

Physician, author, speaker, social media coach, wife, mother, and owner of her own publishing company. Many say it takes superpowers to juggle all of these talents – but my next guest, Dr. Nicole Swiner, will say she's no superwoman! She truly is living outside the box. In order to drum up more attention for her practice, she started writing medical advice for her town's  local newspaper. Dr. Swiner's passions are in women and minority health, stress management, and self care. Years later, with a myriad of columns and articles, she noticed that she covered very similar themes and used this to create her first book: How to Avoid the Superwoman Complex: 12 Ways to Balance Mind, Body & Spirit. Her book focuses on the notion that trying to be “all things to all people” is a large reason why people aren't truly happy and healthy. Dr. Swiner did her undergraduate studies at Duke University, and obtained her medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina. From there, she decided Family Medicine was for her, and completed her residency at the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill. Currently Dr. Swiner is practicng in Durham, North Carolina. Things you'll learn in this episode: Why even in this age of dwindling private practices –  she prefers private practice to being hospital employed Her definition of the Superwoman Complex Quick tips on how to create content and become a published author How she learned the importance of self-promotion The what and why behind Swiner Publishing Company How she answers #imnotjustadoc   SUBSCRIBE: iTunes | GooglePlayMusic | Stitcher The post 015 – Don't call her a superwoman – Dr Nicole Swiner demystifies the Superwoman Complex appeared first on DOCS OUTSIDE THE BOX.
