Suzy Pepper Rollins is the author of 3 Books: Learning in the Fast Lane, Teaching in the Fast Lane & Teaching Vulnerable Learners. N.L. Holmes: A New Adventure in the Empire at Twilight series - The Sun at Twilight. Episode 385 of Teaching Learning Leading K12, an audio podcast. N.L. Holmes is a prolific novelist embarking on another significant career phase. Prior to taking up the power of writing and using this pen name, she was an accomplished archaeologist and teacher for 25 years. Early in her career she served as a nun for two decades. In between she was an artist and antiques dealer. Yes, she has lived an interesting life and the sum of her experiences informs and inspires her writings today. Holmes, who earned her doctorate in Classical and Near Eastern Archaeology Studies from Bryn Mawr College despite an offer to attend Princeton, has excavated in Greece and Israel, and taught ancient history and humanities at Stockton University in N.J. and University of South Florida for many years. She also did archaeological artwork for excavations from Lebanon. With seven published novels, Holmes is the creator of The Lord Hani Mysteries. The inspiration for her Bronze Age novels came with an assignment she gave to her students one day: Here are the only documents we have telling us about royal divorce in Ugarit in the 13th century. How much can we say about what happened? She notes: “It quickly became apparent that almost anything we might come up with was as much fiction as historiography!” She also penned The Empire At Twilight series, historical fiction set in the 13th century C.B. during the Hittite Empire. Born and raised in Fort Worth, Texas, she attended The University of Texas in the honors program but dropped out midway to enter into the antiques business. Two years later, she entered the Discalced Carmelite convent in Texas. She left the convent 20 years later and returned to school to get her B.A. in Classical and Near Eastern Archaeology. Holmes resides with her husband, three cats, and a dog. They split their time between Tampa, Florida and northern France, where she gardens, weaves, and plays the violin. They have an adult son. Today we are focused on her latest addition to her Empire at Twilight series...The Sun at Twilight. Thanks for listening! Enjoy. But wait... Could you do me a favor? Gabriele Delmonaco talks about A Chance in Life an International Non-Profit that Provides Food, Shelter, and Education for Underprivileged and Refugee Youth Throughout the World. This is episode 384 of Teaching Learning Leading K12, an audio podcast. President and Executive Director of A Chance In Life since February 2015, Gabriele Delmonaco heads the national operations of the organization from its New York office, reporting directly to the Chairman of the Board. He is leading the organization in our next phase of growth and international expansion. A Chance In Life is an international nonprofit that provides shelter, food and education - including financial literacy - for underprivileged and refugee youth throughout the world including here in the United States. Originally known as Boys and Girls Towns, the organization came into being 75 years ago after World War II. Its goal was to provide a home to vast numbers of children who had been displaced and to give them “a chance in life.” Not only did the institution offer them a home, but its unique system of “self-government” gave these young people the opportunity to pursue an education and to develop the confidence and the creativity they need to become active participants in their communities. Fast forward to today and this international nonprofit is providing shelter and support to nearly 4,000 homeless, vulnerable and refugee youth in nine countries with plans to open one in the United States in the coming weeks. ACIL's unique model of self-governance lets youth have complete control over how their town runs - even forming their own currency. They not only learn to think critically, but how to speak out for themselves and those around them. Gabriele, a native Italian, moved to the United States in 2001 from Rome. He possesses more than 25 years' experience in the non-profit field with a proven track record as a chief operating officer and as a fundraiser, managing multinational teams. Most recently, Gabriele served the Jesuits of the New York and New England Provinces as VP for Advancement and Communications, leading a successful merger of the two provinces. Previously, he served as Chief Executive Officer of the U.S. branch of the Catholic Near East Welfare Association (CNEWA), an international agency that provides humanitarian aid and pastoral support in the Middle East, Northeast Africa, Eastern Europe, and Asia. Gabriele also worked at the Vatican as Associate Director of Finance for eight years. Gabriele holds an MBA in marketing and a BS in organizational management from Nyack College in New York. He resides in New York City with his family. Awesome episode! Thanks for listening! Enjoy. But wait... Could you do me a favor? Smith was a well-known stained glass maker in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, for over 15 years, creating custom pieces for celebrities and clients all around the world. Upon retirement, she took up her second love, writing, and has published poetry and short stories before writing this, her first novel. The Shingle Weaver’s Picnic is a poignant and timeless story of a close-knit family touched by tragedy in the darkest days of the Second World War, and a young girl who must cope with the unthinkable when a child is murdered during her summer visit to her grandparents’ house. Can a child’s innocence still exist amidst a violent world? The Shingle Weaver’s Picnic not only entertains, but it touches the hearts of readers and explores a moving side of the human spirit. “Through the power of this story, readers will no doubt find themselves changed,” suggests Smith. “They will enter a time and place that on one hand seems long gone, and on the other, seems ever present.” So much to learn today! Bruce Boise - Opioid Crisis Gets Worse During COVID and More About Bruce's Book Cold Comfort: One Man's Struggle to Stop the Illegal Marketing of Powerful Opioid Drugs and Save Lives. This is episode 379 of Teaching Learning Leading K12, an audio podcast. Bruce Boise worked for nearly 24 years in the pharmaceutical industry, first as a hospital representative, and then as a sales manager in the Great Lakes region. After losing his job as a whistleblower, he spent portions of the next 17 years working with the United States Justice department on two separate False Claims Act cases against his former employer, Cephalon/Teva, a neuro bio-tech company. His story is told in a new book, Cold Comfort: One Man's Struggle to Stop the Illegal Marketing of Powerful Opioid Drugs and Save Lives. You can also hear my interview with Bruce on episode 308 of Teaching Learning Leading K12 talking about his book and the Opioid Crisis. Bruce, after exposing how Cephalon was illegally marketing off- label prescription drug usage, waited many years to see justice after wearing a wire, losing his job, becoming homeless, and black-balled by the pharmaceutical industry. At one point, he was flipping burgers for ten bucks an hour just to get by. Cephalon settled the case many years later with the United States for $425 million in fines and damages. Today he advocates on behalf of whistleblowers and helps educate the public on the importance of supporting all whistleblowers. Boise began working at Carter-Wallace in 1980. He earned the pharmaceutical company’s highest sales award, President’s Club, several times during his 16-year tenure. He often ranked in the company’s top 20% in sales and trained field and hopeful sales representatives. He developed their first million-dollar territory and ranked as the top salesperson in the nation of Felbatol, an anti-epileptic drug. In 1996 he went to work for Cephalon, Inc., and within two years he ranked third in the company nationally in sales of all in-line products. He worked with Medtronic to co-market several products. Among his accomplishments in working seven years with Cephalon, Inc., he developed a team of 11 reports from a six-state region, including Chicago and Detroit; hired extensively throughout the nation during several expansions; spoke at numerous industry conventions to build product awareness; achieved $18 million in sales of a new product launch; and leading his sales region to be ranked No. 1 nationally. Boise earned a Bachelor of Arts from The Ohio State University and did graduate work in Geo Engineering at Akron Community. For more information, please consult www.bruceboise.com. He lived in Melbourne and Key West, Florida for a decade but the Ohio native has lived most his life in Columbus, Ohio. Bruce will be discussing COVID & the Opioid Crisis and the most recent CDC status of Opioid overdoses. So much to learn today! Thanks for listening! Enjoy. But wait... Could you do me a favor? Dr. Melanie Dean discusses her book The Hidden Power of Emotions: How to Activate Your Energy Field and Transform Your Life. This is episode 368 of Teaching Learning Leading K12, an audio podcast. Melanie Dean, Ph.D. – is a psychologist with a background in science and business who has spent her career helping people work with their thoughts and feelings to achieve their own personal goals. After 15 years building a publishing company for psychologists and psychiatrists, Dr. Melanie Dean went on to sell it for the exact amount of money she had been envisioning. How did the thoughts and feelings she had been nurturing sync up with the opportunities that brought her exactly what she wanted? The Hidden Power of Emotions: How to Activate your Energy Field and Transform your Life is the culmination of 10 years of Dr. Dean’s research in psychology, molecular physics, and quantum physics to answer that question. In her newest book, she reveals the truth that she discovered – there is a science-backed system for tapping your intuition’s power and using it to get what you want. Dr. Dean explains how each one of us is continually communicating with a living world of energy, whether we realize it or not. Your emotions, which are made up of atoms, create energy waves that leave your body and connect with similar energy. When you focus your feelings on what you want, you begin to intentionally direct your energy, sending out waves that will connect you with and help you achieve your desires. Dr. Dean holds two patents on assessment systems that help physicians diagnose and treat chronic conditions and is also the author of Borderline Personality Disorder: The Latest Assessment and Treatment Strategies. While on faculty at the University of Missouri, Kansas City, Dr. Dean taught a doctoral training clinic on Brief Solutions Focused Therapy. She has presented for large and small organizations including Intel, St. Luke’s Hospital, Bendix, Allied Signal and BMO Harris Bank. In addition to her education and research in science and psychology, Dr. Dean is dedicated to the study of spirituality and has learned directly from the Dalai Lama. She serves on the Board of Trustees for Unity World Headquarters and lives in Kansas City, Missouri, with her husband, kids, horses and dog. She is the creator and leader of The Wave Makers, a free online learning community dedicated to helping people notice and shift their emotions - and intentionally direct their energy to create the life they really want. From Struggling to Successful: The Power of Acceleration A Tale of Hope from Suzy Pepper Rollins For years, the dominant method of support for students with gaps has been remediation, the reteaching of skills missed in past years. The idea was “If we could just fix these kids and go back and reteach everything they missed, they’d be just fine.” Of course, as they are moving backwards in time, their peers are moving forward. And then we scratch our heads and ponder how the gaps got bigger… It can feel pretty futile, for learners and educators. This session is about a different approach, acceleration. Acceleration is a tactical process in which we prepare students for success. How? By strategically inserting prior knowledge, vocabulary, and just the prerequisite skills needed for this week…things they will be using right away. Acceleration gets under the hood of what’s missing for a learner – prior knowledge – which is often listed by researchers as the single most important element to mastering new learning. This session is with Suzy Pepper Rollins, who has been a leader in rethinking how we can turn struggling learners into successful ones – quickly! She shares her steps and processes with acceleration. As part of this session, Suzy has placed a power point on the site with tips and research on acceleration. In addition, ASCD has her chapter on acceleration open. The Power of the Opening Minutes With Suzy Pepper Rollins The opening minutes hold tremendous power for learning. Student motivation, reading comprehension, intellectual curiosity, and the value of a task all hinge on starting with something powerful! Unfortunately, these moments may have been "hijacked" along the way and turned into a "Do Now" classroom management moment. Do this now while I take attendance, fill out some forms, rotate my tires, etc. No More! That's the subject of our short podcast this week. But wait! Here are some amazing free resources by our fabulous authors to support make these opening minutes super strong! • Kristina Smekens: Free bundle of bell-ringers for ELA! • Angela Stockman: Free Firestarters for writing! • Laurel Schmidt: It say's "Banish Writer's Block" but this is a cool technique for other subjects - Students draw their heads for a brain dump & then sequence ideas. • Suzy Pepper Rollins: Alpha brainstorming is for all subjects! From A -Z, everything you know about fractions, taxes, Africa, prices, etc.

You may remember Suzy from a couple of earlier interviews: Episode 2 where we talked about her instructional program called Math in the Fast Lane and on Episode 43 we talked about her book Learning in the Fast Lane. She is a national presenter, life-long educator, founder of Math in the Fast Lane ( a resource for helping teachers in grades 3-8 help kids with better understanding math), and now the author of two books published by ASCD- Learning in the Fast Lane and Teaching in the Fast Lane. Suzy is energetic and passionate about helping teachers help their kids become academically successful. She has a nack for writing books that are easy to read and put to use in the classroom. Her research-based approach shares the research but gets to the practical immediately. No translators are needed here. Today we talk about why she likes helping teachers and we dig into several parts of Teaching in the Fast Lane. You will hear her talk about the active classroom and what that requires. By the way, I love the way each chapter ends with a list of Questions to Ponder as well as her thoughts about stations and standards walls. You are going to love Teaching in the Fast Lane and don't forget to check out her first book, Learning in the Fast Lane. Suzy also has taken on a new venture called myedexpert.com. You will hear us talk about this exciting way for teachers to get help from colleagues. Thanks for listening! Enjoy! Ok, I know we all are busy and it is so easy to say, "You know I will gladly read something tomorrow, but today, I just need to do this." Come on, you know what I'm talking about. Just say no to that inclination. You need to be constantly learning if you are going to work with kids. Classroom teacher, building administrator, instructional coach, athletic coach, graduation coach, so forth and so on. Reading is a must. You must continually seek to expand your understanding of what works with kids at different ages. Today, I am focused on my 3 Reasons Why Professional Reading is a Must: When we take time to read professional writings we are able to- 1. Address what we don't know. 2. Learn more about what we have some knowledge of. 3. Discover new information that can help us be better at what we already do. Here are some great resources for professional reading: * Some of these readings I have interviewed the author so look for a podcast link to hear the author and/or a YouTube link for a book review.
