Episode Notes Brand USA will have a new president and CEO soon. NYC Tourism + Conventions CEO Fred Dixon will lead the U.S.' destination marketing organization starting July 15, writes Global Tourism Reporter Dawit Habtemariam. Dixon, a veteran of the travel industry, will be tasked with helping the U.S. tourism industry make a full recovery from the pandemic. Long visitor visa wait times and the U.S.' outdated air infrastructure have posed challenges for Brand USA. Dixon comes to Brand USA after having helped NYC secure $30 million in funds to market itself after the pandemic. Next, Hilton has acquired a majority controlling interest in Sydell Group, the owner of NoMad Hotels, reports Senior Hospitality Editor Sean O'Neill. Sydell will design, brand and manage the NoMad brand while Hilton will take the lead in working to get more NoMad hotels created. Hilton expects to build up to 100 NoMad hotels. NoMad, which currently has properties in Las Vegas and London in its portfolio, will join Hilton's rewards program. Hilton's acquisition of NoMad Hotels comes after it announced last month it would buy Graduate Hotels for $210 million. Finally, Air India has completely transformed its loyalty program, writes Contributor Ajay Awtaney. Awtaney lists six major changes the company has made to its loyalty program. Air India will now award points to customers based on the fare paid instead of the distance traveled. In addition, Air India will keep any unredeemed points alive provided the loyalty program member flies with the company every two years. Under the previous system, unredeemed points expired three years after they were earned. Air India has also simplified the loyalty program's status tiers. Awtaney notes Air India's loyalty program is considered the toughest in India to achieve status.
On Episode 10 of Season 3 , I spoke with my grandmother, Sydell Aaron. Ultimately, we all become consumers of Healthcare, like it or not. On Healthcare Reimagined, I typically showcase healthcare innovation - the truth is that innovations are only interesting in so far as they are making life better for patients. Last week I spoke with my grandmother about her experience as a consumer of U.S. healthcare over the past 9 decades. Sydell, or Meema as I call her, was born in 1932. In 1929, 3 years before she was born, the first polio patient was saved. In the 1940's when Meema was a teenager, scientists succeeded in isolating penicillin and antibiotics became widely available for the first time. Before that, you could die from a simple infection. The first kidney transplant was done in 1952, when Meema was 20. In 1964, for the first time human blood was successfully stored. Meema was 32 years old, with 3 children.Meema has already lived 50% longer than the average life expectancy for a woman the year she was born (it was 62 back then). We spoke about her family doctor making house calls, the awe and wonder of medicine before technology that made medical information available to all, and about the trade off between safety and independence as one gets older. We discussed a few quotes from Atul Gawande's book Being Mortal, and the loss of independence as one ages. One of the quotes from Gawande's book really captured the essence of the challenge Meema faces in her interactions with her adult children. They want the best for her, as she knows, but at times, they infringe upon her freedom in an effort to protect her: "We want autonomy for ourselves and safety for those we love.” We went on to discuss the framework in which death is addressed in U.S. Healthcare, and a system that selects for those who can and want to fix things (Doctors), when sometimes the best option is not to fix but to provide comfort in one's final days. We closed with a discussion about Meema's own hopes, desires, and observations after over 9 decades on this pale blue dot we all call home. In this episode of Nutrition Rounds – we do our second deep dive into the gut microbiome. On this episode - we discuss how certain metabolites produced in the gut are associated with cardiovascular disease. Your gut microbiome is made up of trillions of microorganisms, including at least 1000 different species of known bacteria with more than 3 MILLION genes! (150 x more than humans!) Could what we eat change the diversity and species of bacteria that reside in our gut? Could this change our risk for cardiovascular disease? And what IS TMAO? It is one piece of a massive, complicated puzzle. We have barely scratched the surface as to what is yet to come in gut microbiome research, but the work from Dr. Tang, and Dr. Hazen, and their colleagues at Cleveland Clinic is a fascinating beginning. About Dr. Tang W. H. Wilson Tang, MD, is Director of Cleveland Clinic’s Center for Clinical Genomics; Research Director, and staff cardiologist in the Section of Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplantation Medicine in the Sydell and Arnold Miller Family Heart & Vascular Institute at the Cleveland Clinic. There has never, ever, been anything quite like The Ned in the UK before. Created from the former headquarters of the Midland Bank, in the heart of the City Of London, the Grade I listed building is now home to 10 restaurants, 250 bedrooms, 6 private event spaces, a spa, a gym and a club with over 3000 members… In any given week, 30,000 meals are served on the ground floor alone. As its managing director, Gareth Banner, says modestly, ‘for a single address there are a lot of moving parts….’ Just three years ago, when he was looking through the dust and the scaffolding at what was the final phase of five years of renovation, he knew it would be special. As you’ll hear, his career – which takes in stints with global brand The Marriott as well as iconic boutique hotel, The Hempel – is also impressive. It went some way to prepare him for this amazing project. But actually, as you’ll hear, the biggest learning has happened since The Ned opened its doors to the public two years ago.
