On this episode of Visual Intonation, we sit down with Zoë Davidson, a brilliant Director of Photography whose work speaks volumes — even when there's no dialogue. Based in Toronto, Zoë's shot films across Canada, the U.S., and the Caribbean, and her camera has a way of capturing not just images, but emotion. Her journey is rooted in storytelling, travel, and a deep connection to culture. Zoë holds an MFA from Howard University and spent four years teaching digital media before diving full-time into freelance cinematography. She's worked with heavy hitters like Lionsgate, Terence Nance, and even the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. But what stands out most isn't just the scale of her work; it's the heart behind it. Every frame feels intentional, rich, and alive. Her films have screened at Sundance, the Trinidad + Tobago Film Festival, and CaribbeanTales, and she's taken home major awards, including Best Documentary at Emerging Lens in 2024. She's also part of powerful collectives like Brown Girls Doc Mafia, Women in Media, and the Canadian Society of Cinematographers, always bringing community into focus. In this conversation, we talk about how Zoë lights a scene, how she finds truth through the lens, and what it means to tell stories across borders. It's honest, inspiring, and full of wisdom for anyone drawn to the art of visual storytelling. Zoë Davidson's Website: https://zoedavidson.com/Zoë Davidson's IMDB: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm10347632/Zoë Davidson's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/zdavidson/Zoë Davidson's LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/zo%C3%ABdavidsonZoë Davidson's SkillShare: https://www.skillshare.com/en/profile/Zo%C3%AB-Davidson/4543525?srsltid=AfmBOopeMfgG_PtnfaqbJOKZgHwCWq8QigYHyew7FXDv76VcxAPdxjztZoë Davidson's Vimeo: https://vimeo.com/zoedavidsonSupport the showVisual Intonation Website: https://www.visualintonations.com/Visual Intonation Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/visualintonation/Vante Gregory's Website: vantegregory.comVante Gregory's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/directedbyvante/ To support me on Patreon (thank you): patreon.com/visualintonations Tiktok: www.tiktok.com/@visualintonation Tiktok: www.tiktok.com/@directedbyvante

The film really excels at showcasing its IP towards the end of the film and this will be a treat for super little kids who will be enthralled by it. Alright people, for tonight's episode, we're doing something completely different. And by we, I mean I. Chris is on a well deserved vacation, which left me by myself to review Space Jam: A New Legacy. And oh man, did we have a lot to talk about here. Space Jam: A New Legacy is a 2021 American live-action/animated sports comedy film directed by Malcolm D. Lee, serving as a standalone sequel to 1996's Space Jam. It is the first theatrically-released film to feature the Looney Tunes characters since Looney Tunes: Back in Action (2003), and is also a combination of live-action, traditional hand-drawn animation, and 3D CGI effects. The film stars basketball player LeBron James as a fictionalized version of himself, along with Don Cheadle, Khris Davis, Sonequa Martin-Green, and Cedric Joe in live-action roles, while Jeff Bergman, Eric Bauza, and Zendaya headline the Looney Tunes voice cast. Set in a shared Warner Bros. virtual space multiverse, the film follows James teaming up with the Looney Tunes to win a basketball match against digitized champions to rescue his son from a rogue artificial intelligence (AI). Talks for a Space Jam successor began after the release of the first film, which Joe Pytka would have returned to direct. Spike Brandt and Tony Cervone signed on as the animation supervisors, but eventually the deal fell through due to Michael Jordan's refusal to return. Several possible spin-offs focusing on other athletes, including Jeff Gordon, Tiger Woods, and Tony Hawk, were also discussed, but never came to fruition. After several years of languishing, a LeBron James-led sequel was officially announced in 2014 with filming under Terence Nance took place from June to September 2019 around Los Angeles. After a few weeks into filming, Nance left the project and Lee was hired to replace him in July 2019. Dom talks about the troubled path this film had on its way to the big screen, its similarities to the first one and ultimately how the same thing ultimately makes this more of a commercial than an actual film. It's all covered here on the #talkintvpodcast --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/talkintvpodcastgmailcom/support

JEFF BERGMAN, voice of Bugs Bunny in upcoming SPACE JAM: A NEW LEGACY and Yogi Bear in new HBO Max series JELLYSTONE!, premiering July 29thABOUT JELLYSTONE!, DEBUTING ON HBO MAX JULY 29thHey, Hey, Hey! Yogi Bear, Cindy Bear, Huckleberry Hound and a Universe of Hanna-Barbara Characters Welcome You to Jellystone! Yogi, Boo Boo and Cindy, alongside an epic ensemble cast of Hanna-Barbera characters, are returning to television screens in the all-new animated comedy, Jellystone! The Max Original series helmed by acclaimed showrunner and executive producer C.H. Greenblatt and produced by Warner Bros. Animation, presents a reimagined take on these beloved characters, modernizing them for today's family audience and introducing them to a new generation of fans. Season one premieres Thursday, July 29 on HBO Max.Set in the charming town of the same name, Jellystone! follows an ensemble of Hanna-Barbera characters as they live, work, play, and (as is often the case), destroy the town in some silly way together. Huckleberry Hound proudly serves as the town's mayor; Cindy, Boo Boo and Yogi are the town's medical staff; Jabberjaw works at Magilla's clothing store where they supply all the bow ties and hats to the town's citizens; and every character has a specific role in the community. Their paths cross in fun and ridiculous ways, turning everyday activities into hilarious pandemonium."I grew up watching tons of Hanna-Barbera cartoons and have a deep love for these characters," said Greenblatt. "The massive amount of both classic and not-so-classic characters we were able to use from the Hanna-Barbera library is what really makes the Jellystone! universe special. Rather than recreate the feeling of cartoons of the past, we wanted to have silly, weird fun with these characters and expand their personalities to give them more depth. Chances are if there's a character you love, you'll see them somewhere in this world eventually. We hope longtime fans appreciate our take on this world, and we're excited that parents get to introduce and enjoy their favorite Hanna-Barbera characters with their kids."Greenblatt serves as showrunner and executive producer, and voices several characters including Doggie Daddy, Boo Boo, Peter Potamus, and Benny. Joining him in this talented voice cast includes: Jeff Bergman, the voice of Yogi, Mr. Jinks, Wally Gator, and Lippy the Lion; Jim Conroy, the voice of Huckleberry Hound, Captain Caveman, and Pa Rugg, and more; Georgie Kidder, the voice of Auggie Doggie, Brain, and Floral Rugg; Grace Helbig, the voice of Cindy Bear, Yappy, Taffy, and Granny Sweet; Niccole Thurman, the voice of Jabberjaw, Squiddly Diddly, and Dee Dee Sykes; Thomas Lennon, the voice of Top Cat; Ron Funches, the voice of Shag Rugg; Bernardo de Paula, the voice of El Kabong and Mildew Wolf; Dana Snyder, the voice of Snagglepuss, Touché Turtle, and Lambsy; Katie Grober, the voice of Yakky Doodle; Paul F. Terence Nance's An Oversimplification of Her Beauty is a fusion of stop-motion, animation, and camera phone footage is a headache, and heartache of unrequited art-school love. A tedious arthouse film where humans can be either satellites or planets either mindlessly revolving or gropingly gravitating. Smoke some weed and bring your notebook for this glorious stench.

Geri and Terence Nance — creator, writer, director, and co-star of the new HBO Late Night series RANDOM ACTS OF FLYNESS — talk about the trauma in - and of - making art, how his writing takes place before he opens Final Draft, and how we can find success by looking in each other's faces. Terrence Nance is a writer, director, actor, and musician. His 2012 feature film AN OVERSIMPLIFICATION OF HER BEAUTY premiered at Sundance and received a Gotham Independent Film Award. He was the recipient of a 2014 Guggenheim fellowship for his work. His latest project is the HBO late-night sketch comedy series RANDOM ACTS OF FLYNESS - a fluid, stream-of-consciousness response to the contemporary American mediascape. Each episode features a handful of interconnected vignettes which showcase an ensemble cast of emerging and established talent. The show is a mix of verité documentary, musical performances, surrealist melodrama and humorous animation. Nance and his collaborators weave together such themes as ancestral trauma, history, death, the singularity, romance and more. The six-episode first season explores evergreen cultural idioms such as patriarchy, white supremacy and sensuality from a new, thought-provoking perspective, and is available to stream on HBO Max. -- Read shownotes, transcripts, and other member interviews: www.onwriting.org/ -- Follow the Guild on social media: Twitter: @OnWritingWGAE | @WGAEast Facebook: /WGAEast Instagram: @WGAEast

Throughout this season, on alternating weeks, we’ll feature a handpicked episode from podcasts by, for or about the Black community. This week we’re excited to share an episode from the Micheaux Mission. Since 2016, Len Webb and Vincent Williams have been challenging themselves to watch and review every Black feature film ever made and released to theaters. In Vincent's words, they hope to give 'Rolling Stone' style examination to these under appreciated works of art. Together they hope to find the perfect wine to drink with Pam Grier's Coffy, the five movies, since 1985, in which Samuel L. Jackson does not appear, and someone else who agrees with Len that The Last Dragon is a bad movie. The Micheaux Mission is named for Oscar Micheaux, regarded as the first major African-American feature filmmaker and the most successful African-American filmmaker of the first half of the twentieth century.  Len and Vincent have spent the last few years bringing the good word of Black film to the masses in a fun and engaging way. Along the way, they have been featured in The Philadelphia Tribune, Houston Chronicle, Radio New Zealand and won the Expression in Radio Award at the 2019 PhillyCam Cammy Awards. Today’s episode features the 2012 film, An Oversimplification of Her Beauty. According to the Micheaux Mission, Writer/director Terence Nance has created a literal poem of a movie, a heartfelt exploration of one man's feeling for his homie-lover-friend, that has enthralled Vince and Len unlike any film before on the Mission.

The intention behind this expansive discussion is how each of them take their holistic approaches toward their life, their art, and in their wellness. That the whole is more than merely the sum of its parts; in theory or in practice. And also questioning why Black artists have had to "hustle" for so long, and when or if that won't be the case.

We sit down this week with the incredibly multi-talented artist, director, and musician, Terence Nance, to get inside his head about things like his HBO series, Random Acts of Flyness, that airs out, in almost a stream-of-consciousness, many of today’s most salient issues like systemic racism, white privilege, gender, and masculinity. Not knowing it all is especially important to Terence’s work, “I think of making stuff as conversation; why would you get into a conversation if you knew where it was going to go? Why would it be interesting to talk to somebody if you knew exactly what they were going to say back to you?”. He also explains why honesty within his family and close relationships is what makes him feel the most vulnerable, but he goes there anyway so as to set an example to his nieces and nephews, and why he sees beauty as a scale of disarming people and emitting ease, rather than as an aesthetic quality. But most fascinating to us is how Terence unpacks attributes that we give to words such as unapologetic. “People have been using the word unapologetic a lot and I don't know that I have a relationship to that word because that means that I would have had some sort of expectation that I am to apologize for something...I've never felt any kind of dialogue with an audience or anybody making the show that made me feel like there was anything that would offend or necessitate an apology or a caveat of any kind.”
