Congratulations to NFL fans in nine cities across America!   Commissioner Roger Goodell has just given you the proverbial one finger salute. The man in charge of America’s fall pro football league has no problem asking you to pay up, shut-up, and watch meaningless August preseason football games at your NFL stadium every year.   Meanwhile, Commissioner Goodell and his band of merry billionaire owners have just pilfered a league record nine regular season home games this fall and moved them them overseas.  That’s two more games than in 2025 and four more than in 2024 or previous years. Notice the trend? I was excited a few weeks ago in reviewing the list of 2026 NFL opponents for each team.  My two favorite black and gold NFL teams (the New Orleans Saints and Pittsburgh Steelers) were slated to play this fall in the Louisiana Superdome. Until… The greedy NFL pirated the Saints’ Week 7 home game against the Steelers and moved it to be played…in Paris, France!?? Sacre Bleu! Yes, we know that French explorers founded New Orleans in 1718.  In 1803, the United States acquired the city and a vast region located west of the Mississippi River in what became known as the Louisiana Purchase for a bargain price of $15 million. New Orleans’ tourist appeal relies heavily on its French roots.  The city’s famous French Quarter features street signs reminding visitors and locals of the city’s French history. You can stroll down Rue Royale (Royal Street) to enjoy a few biegnets and Community Coffee at Cafe Du Monde. Magnifique! Even the New Orleans Saints’ team logo features a French fleur de lis. Yes, I will begrudgingly give credit to someone in the NFL’s scheduling office for coming up with the idea of sending the New Orleans Saints to play a game in Paris. But why did the NFL rob Saints fans of a chance to watch our beloved WhoDats play the vaunted Pittsburgh Steelers in the Superdome? Saints fans wouldn’t be nearly as torqued if the league had selected a different home game this fall against (let’s say) the Cleveland Browns or Las Vegas Raiders. C’est parti pour les Steelers… (Here we go Steelers…) Pittsburgh Steelers fans aren’t necessarily thrilled about moving the road game in New Orleans all the way to France, either.  The six-time Super Bowl champions have one of the NFL’s largest traveling contingents. Visitors to New Orleans in late October are treated to some of the best weather of the year in the Crescent City.  Local hotels, restaurants, bars and retailers are going to miss cashing-in on 10,000 or more fans of the Pittsburgh Steelers that weekend, too. Thanks for nothing, NFL! The Week 7 game on October 25 in Paris, France will probably still feature thousands of Terrible Towels being waved by fans in attendance. You have to wonder how much money those French football fans will be charged to buy them, though. This migration onto the world stage by the NFL is quite deliberate Commissioner Roger Goodell (it’s OK to “boo” right here) first sent the Arizona Cardinals to play a regular season NFL game vs. the San Francisco 49ers in Mexico City in 2005.  Since then, the league has continued to add more and more regular season games played outside of the United States. London is the leader in number of NFL games played outside the continental United States. A total of 48 NFL games have been played in London since 2007.  In fact, a minimum of two NFL games have been played in London annually since 2013. This year will feature three consecutive weeks of NFL regular season games being played in London during October.  But why? The unfortunate Jacksonville Jaguars have been dispatched to London a total of 14 times over the past 13 seasons.  As usual, J-ville travels to Jolly ol’ England again this fall.  The Jaguars are scheduled to play the Philadelphia Eagles on October 11 in London. Many observers (including me) believe that the Jacksonville NFL franchise is going to be relocated to London at some point in the not-too-distant future. Germany has become a popular recent destination for NFL teams.  Five games have already been played on German soil since 2022.  The New England Patriots and Detroit Lions will play in Munich this season on November 15. Mexico City has hosted four NFL regular season games since 2016.  The Minnesota Vikings and San Francisco 49ers will play a Sunday night game in Mexico City on November 22. Brazil will host its third NFL regular season game in three years. The Baltimore Ravens and Dallas Cowboys will play in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday, September 27. Australia gets its first NFL game, too.  The San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams are being dispatched to Melbourne for a Week 1 encounter on September 10. Rounding out the NFL’s frequent flier schedule will be the Cincinnati Bengals and Atlanta Falcons flying to Madrid, Spain for a game on November 8. The NFL’s nine game international schedule is a new record.  There were seven games played overseas in 2025 and “just” five in 2024. Have you figured out why the NFL is doing this? If you guessed, “To make even more money!”, you are correct! Don’t believe the NFL’s baloney about “growing the game internationally”.  It’s all about this massive financial private enterprise growing their already bloated bank accounts. The NFL earns millions from the ticket sales, concessions, merchandise, and rights it receives to play regular season games in international venues. Even more importantly, the league is setting the proverbial hooks right now.  They want millions of new international fans to become addicted to American pro football each fall. These countries represent fresh sources of potential income for the NFL. Online broadcasters such as Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, YouTube, Peacock, and Paramount+ are expected to generate massive new international revenue sources for the NFL. Math lesson – How many people are watching these online providers in the US and other countries? These numbers may surprise you.  Let’s start with Netflix. According to one source, these six countries have the most Netflix subscribers: USA – 66.7 million United Kingdom – 18.4 million Brazil – 16.6 million Germany – 16.6 million Mexico – 13.9 million France – 13.6 million Purely by coincidence (cough), the NFL will be playing at least one regular season football game in each of those countries this fall! Did you know that Amazon Prime Video has more than 160 million viewers in the United States alone?  It is already available in 240 other countries worldwide. As for YouTube, I was surprised to learn that India is their number one country for viewership with 491 million YouTubers.  They claim that the US has 253 million YouTube customers.  Next comes Brazil (144 mm), Mexico (84 mm), and Japan (79 mm). Peacock (owned by NBC Universal) boasts of 36 million mostly-US subscribers.    Paramount + (which also owns CBS) claims have 79 million subscribers in 29 different countries. Traditional NFL television outlets better watch out – soon! That villainous NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell (feel free to “boo” him again here) dropped hints recently that the NFL may utilize its right to opt-out of several existing television deals as early as the fall, 2029 football season. The NFL’s current TV deals began in 2021 and run for 11 years.  That means that Fox Sports, CBS, and NBC should be “safe” through the football year 2032. Maybe. A voluntary renegotiation with one or more of the current broadcasters to extend their deals (at a significantly higher price, of course) may be underway even now. The NFL has begun receiving greater pushback from the public recently. Last week, restaurant and bar associations in Iowa and Wisconsin demanded congressional investigations as to the NFL’s “one-size-fits-all” new distribution plan for its Sunday Ticket package.  The NFL will provide just one untested internet-based online distribution this fall after retail customers enjoyed years of service via satellite. Smartly, the football giant wants to avoid closer oversight now as franchise owners focus on a gigantic pot of international gold on the horizon. The crafty NFL is playing a game of chess with football fans and US broadcasters There is no reason for the NFL to push too hard right now.  Franchise owners are booking record profits.  The NFL doesn’t have a viable competitor trying to steal some of their massively popular pro football audiences. Yet. The NFL has built a 32-team professional football monopoly in the United States.  It is seeking to expand its empire worldwide and reap even greater profits and franchise valuations. Football fans can still have the last laugh The NFL has slowly grown interest in its product over several decades.  Traditional television networks now have advertisers salivating to reach an average of 19 million mostly male viewers generally within the prime buying demographic of ages 25 to 49. The NFL has quietly grown a new audience.  Millions of casual and professional gamblers are now wagering on weekly NFL games via a variety of online betting providers. Tapping into the international market is another attempt by this behemoth sports enterprise called the NFL to expand its financial reach into more untapped markets. “Joe NFL Fan” in the United States must prepare for these changes.  Should he spend more money to start watching a growing portion of his weekly slate of NFL games online or simply go on an NFL TV diet soon? Barring any new fall football competition, the NFL appears confident that the loss of any former US-based viewers will be minimal when compared to adding millions of new international customers. This process is unfolding right in front of your eyes like a deliberate game of chess. The NFL confidently believes they have you trapped.  They have not declared, “Checkmate” just yet. The giant sports enterprise called the NFL is going to eventually force you to start paying to watch their product soon.  Or, you can opt out and enjoy your weekends without the NFL. Those choices are coming – sooner than you think. The post Welcome to the in-FL appeared first on SwampSwamiSports.com.

This week’s annual NFL Draft will be held in the Steel City of Pittsburgh beginning Thursday night.  Several hundred thousand NFL fans will come to town to support (or boo) their favorite team’s selections for three days. Thursday is exclusively dedicated to Round 1.  Friday night brings Rounds 2 and 3.  The event ends Saturday with a marathon of Rounds 4, 5, 6, and 7. Every team will arrive in Pittsburgh with a shopping list for the NFL’s “grocery store” to select several talented young players capable of upgrading their team this fall.   The non-playoff teams must uncover the best bargains at the NFL Draft “store” to upgrade their chances of playing in the postseason this fall. In western Pennsylvania, fans of the host city’s black and gold Steelers are (as usual) discussing who should or shouldn’t be their next quarterback.  Aaron Rodgers hasn’t signed-on for a second year yet.  Pittsburgh (a city with six Super Bowl trophies) has struggled at the position following the 2021 retirement of likely Hall-of-Famer Ben Roethlisberger. QB or Not QB?  That is the question! It’s not just Pittsburgh in need of a new leader at the quarterback position.  Several of the NFL’s 32 teams could use an upgrade at that position. The problem with this year’s NFL draft is a perceived lack of top-level quarterback prospects coming out of college.  Indiana’s Heisman Trophy and national championship quarterback Fernando Mendoza is easily at the top of this year’s rookie class. But is he really worth the top overall pick for the Las Vegas Raiders? Curiously, the Raiders recently sunk $20 million into acquiring expensive journeyman Kirk Cousins from the Atlanta Falcons.  Vegas has the option to retain Cousins for a total of five years if they are willing to part with a total of $172 million. Why would the Raiders select Fernando Mendoza when this team still has an offensive line with more holes than Swiss cheese?  I’m still of the opinion that the Raiders may consider a last-minute trade of the #1 overall pick – for the right price. Arizona’s Cardinals have the #3 pick in the first round and could use a top quarterback, too.  Their investment in 2019 #1 overall selection Kyler Murray failed.  The Cardinals played in just one playoff game over Murray’s seven seasons in Phoenix.  Kyler Murray was released recently and quickly signed by the Minnesota Vikings. Host city Pittsburgh won’t select until the 21st pick in the first round.  The Steelers started 42-year old veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers last year and made it into the first round of the playoffs. Rodgers is playing coy once again and is 50/50 as to whether he returns to Pittsburgh this fall.  He is a free agent and appears to be seeking a combination of cash and a reasonable chance to win his second Super Bowl ring.  Aaron Rodgers might also retire, so the Steelers should draft as if Rodgers won’t return this fall. The New York Jets select #2 overall and are loaded with top picks New York’s Jets have two first round selections (#2 and #16 from Indianapolis).  They are slated to make four of the opening 44 picks in this year’s draft. That’s the good news for Jets fans.  The bad news is that the J-E-T-S have a long history of making poor choices with their top draft choices.  Look for the Jets to consider making a few more deals prior to the end of Thursday night’s first round. Washington QB Jayden Daniels would Love to add the Notre Dame running back! Will Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love be available for Washington at #7 on Thursday night?  Former LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels could use another offensive weapon to give opposing defenses something else to focus on next season. If Washington does not select the talented running back in the first round, look for them to take a top wide receiver instead.  Washington’s offense needs more spark. New Orleans is now on the clock at #8 and solved its QB problem last year The Saints’ second round selection of former Louisville quarterback Tyler Shough paid handsome dividends for Louisiana’s favorite black and gold team.  New Orleans desperately needs another talented wide receiver to take the pressure off Chris Olave.  Arizona State’s Jordyn Tyson could make a good choice.  Perhaps Texas A&M’s cocky “I am the best wide receiver in this draft” wide receiver KC Conception might be in play here. Then again, the Saints (which finished 6-11 last year) could use some help on both the offensive and defensive lines.  Don’t be surprised if New Orleans trades down a few places from the #8 pick to add a third or fourth round pick this year. Surprise! The Kansas City Chiefs hold the #9 pick in the first round Kansas City’s reign of terror for other NFL teams ended in 2025.  The Chiefs sputtered all season long and crashed to Earth with a 6-11 record.  They will get the #9 pick in the opening round of the draft Thursday night. Many expect KC to go shopping for a top defensive or offensive line player such as Miami defensive end Reuben Bain, Jr. or Utah’s massive offensive lineman Spencer Fano.  Quarterback Patrick Mahomes may have some input about the first round selection, so don’t be surprised if KC opts for a speedy wide receiver. Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys select at #12 and 20 Thursday night The Dallas Cowboys just celebrated their 30th year without an appearance in the Super Bowl or even the NFC championship game.  An entire generation of Cowboys fans is waiting for their favorite team to participate in a meaningful title game. Big D really needs a D (as in defense). The Dallas offense scores nearly 30 points per game.  However, the Cowboys finished 7-11 last year, because their defense gave up even more points.  Look for Dallas to select the best defensive player available with their first round pick.  Most anyone available at #12 should be an automatic upgrade for this team’s defense. Dallas also has the 20th choice in the first round as compensation for sending defensive specialist Micah Parsons to Green Bay. Anything less than a rousing success with picks #12 and 20 on Thursday’s opening night will be blamed on 83-year old meddling team owner Jerry Jones. Pittsburgh Steelers are on the clock with the 21st pick The chants of “Here we Go, Steelers!” will sound like a big pep rally as Pittsburgh makes its first round selection Thursday night. Terrible Towels will be waved by thousands in the crowd as Steelers Nation breathlessly awaits their team’s first round selection. It was 2001 when Michael Vick was selected with the #1 overall pick by Atlanta.  After that, no other quarterbacks were taken until Purdue’s Drew Brees was picked early in the second round.  Yes, the same Drew Brees entering the NFL Hall-of-Fame this summer. This year could mimic 2001 with the #1 pick likely to be quarterback Fernando Mendoza.  Pittsburgh may be tempted to jump the gun and select Alabama’s hot and cold quarterback Ty Simpson at #21 (if he is still available). Steelers fans are rightfully nervous about Ty Simpson in the first round. Pittsburgh “reached” for local college product Kenny Pickett at #20 in Round 1 just four years ago,  Unlike the prolific Pickett at Pitt, Ty Simpson’s final college season at Bama was rather unimpressive.  Pittsburgh could use offensive line help and wait for other QB prospects in later rounds. The Philadelphia Eagles (at #23) will be booed even louder than NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell There’s no love lost in Pennsylvania between the AFC’s Pittsburgh Steelers and the NFC’s Philadelphia Eagles which roost at the eastern fringe of the Keystone state. The green-clad pioneers of the NFL’s Tush Push are expected to trade their perpetually unhappy (but well paid) wide receiver A.J. Brown soon.  That might give the Eagles some trade bait to move up from their current #23 spot.  Drafting a talented replacement wide receiver makes perfect sense for Philly. Houston Texans don’t need defensive help selecting at #28 of the first round The Texans developed into a terrifying defensive team in 2025.  They returned to the playoffs and were a tough out.  It’s their on-and-off again offense which needs a difference maker to give this team a jolt. The best offensive player available (including at quarterback) should be what the Texans go for at pick #28 late Thursday evening.  I believe that current quarterback CJ Stroud could use a little competition.  Don’t be surprised if the Texans take a chance to add another young quarterback during the early rounds of this week’s draft. Truth – Most NFL drafts don’t turn a team into a Super Bowl contender in Year #1 There is a reason why some teams keep showing up early in the first round most every year.  The ability to properly identify your team’s needs and then select the player(s) which best fill the needs of your team is difficult to master. Eight quarterbacks (Cam Ward, Caleb Williams, Bryce Young, Trevor Lawrence, Joe Burrow, Kyler Murray, Baker Mayfield, and Jared Goff) have been taken with the #1 overall draft selection in the past ten years. Only Joe Burrow’s 2021 Cincinnati Bengals and Jared Goff’s 2018 L.A. Rams have made it to a Super Bowl (both teams lost). The Raiders may, indeed, select quarterback Fernando Mendoza at #1 on Thursday night.  Las Vegas has nine other draft selections (including three in Round 4) which must be just as solid in order to give this team a much-needed lift. It’s possible, but don’t hold your breath. The post NFL Draft 2026 – Let’s go Grocery Shopping! appeared first on SwampSwamiSports.com.

Tomlin out in Pittsburgh – Who Wants the Best Coaching job in the NFL?

Tuesday’s surprising news came out of Steel City in western Pennsylvania.  Mike Tomlin stepped down as head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers. It’s hard to believe that the 53-year old Tomlin had been the top man in Pittsburgh for 19 seasons. There have been only three Pittsburgh Steelers head coaches since the National Football League merged with the American Football League 55 years ago in 1970. Steelers head coach Chuck Noll started his head coaching career in Pittsburgh in 1969 by going 1-13.  His second season brought a 5-9 mark in 1970 and then just 6-8 in 1971. In today’s NFL, most other NFL teams would have fired future Hall-of-Fame Coach Chuck Noll after three years on “Black Monday” last week. You must win NOW, because fans and social media are all about instant gratification today. The Steelers transformed from an NFL laughing stock to 6-time Super Bowl champions Coach Chuck Noll’s fourth year 1972 Steelers (led by Louisiana Tech quarterback Terry Bradshaw and a host of impressive young draft picks) turned Pittsburgh into a winner by going 11-3.  The talented young Steelers lost in the AFC championship game that year to the last NFL team to complete an unbeaten season – the 1972 Miami Dolphins. From that point, the 1970’s “Super Steelers” went on to win four Super Bowl titles in just six seasons. The NFL franchise in Pittsburgh had never captured a single NFL title since the team began in 1933.  Coach Chuck Noll’s teams transformed the image of the Pittsburgh Steelers from lovable losers to a tough band of black-and-gold monsters on the football field. Noll put in 23 seasons as the Steelers’ head coach before handing the baton to Bill Cowher in 1992. Coach Cowher’s Steelers added the team’s fifth Super Bowl title (“One for the thumb”) in 2005.  The very intense Bill Cowher retired after the 2006 season after 15 years of NFL success in Pittsburgh. Mike Tomlin took the reins in Pittsburgh in 2007 The 34-year old former defensive coordinator with the Minnesota Vikings immediately bonded with his new team and its very boisterous loyal fans. Like Chuck Noll and Bill Cowher, Mike Tomlin’s college and NFL coaching experience had been on the defensive side of the football. Did you know that Mike Tomlin (the college football player) was a 2nd team All-Conference wide receiver at the College of William & Mary in Virginia?  He became a defensive backs coach upon entering the coaching profession. Mike Tomlin’s Steelers quickly added Pittsburgh’s sixth Super Bowl trophy in 2008. This endeared the team’s new coach to millions of Terrible Towel waving Steelers fans around the world. Mike Tomlin’s Steelers reached the big game once again in 2010 but lost 31-25 to (ironically) Super Bowl MVP quarterback Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers. Ironically, the now 42-year old Aaron Rodgers signed to play quarterback for Coach Tomlin’s Steelers this past season. Rodgers led Pittsburgh to a 10-7 regular season record.  The Steelers were embarrassed 30-6 – at home – by the Houston Texans on Monday night in the wild-card round. Less than one day after Monday night’s ugly loss to Houston, Coach Mike Tomlin elected to voluntarily step down as the Steelers’ head coach Tuesday afternoon.  He finished with 193 regular season wins. That tied him with former Steelers coaching legend Chuck Noll for 9th place in NFL history. The pressure of winning in Pittsburgh takes a toll on its head coaches The Steelers’ six Super Bowl titles place significant pressure on the current head coach to add another piece of hardware into the team’s trophy case. Mike Tomlin’s Pittsburgh squads never finished below .500 in any of his 19 seasons. His Steelers won the AFC North eight times including this season’s 10-7 team. Coach Tomlin’s Steelers teams were defensively talented but inconsistent on offense.  Tomlin’s offensive units have further declined after the 2021 retirement of likely Hall-of-Fame quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.  One by one, offensive coordinators have struggled and been sent packing from Pittsburgh several times during Mike Tomlin’s 19 years at the helm. Monday night’s 30-6 loss – at home – in the opening round again highlighted Mike Tomlin’s difficulty at winning playoff games.  This week’s defeat was the Steelers’ seventh straight in the NFL playoffs. The loss tied Coach Tomlin with former Cincinnati Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis for the most consecutive playoff defeats in NFL history. Ouch. The pressure to win a post-season game seems to have been the final breaking point for Pittsburgh Coach Mike Tomlin.  He looked ready to take a lengthy sabbatical from his coaching responsibilities.  Coach Tomlin is considered a likely candidate to work for one of the television networks as a studio host or analyst in the broadcast booth next season. Former New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton “retired” from the team in 2022 but took a job working as a studio host for FOX Sports that fall.  Payton then returned to the sidelines the following year in 2023 to become the Denver Broncos head coach. It’s likely that Mike Tomlin will patrol the football sidelines as either a head coach or defensive coordinator for another team at some point in the future. In the meantime, here’s hoping that Coach Tomlin will enjoy a very well deserved break. Jump ball!  Who wants to be the new Pittsburgh Steelers head coach? Let’s examine the positives first. Job security – There have been just three coaches in the past 55 seasons.  The Steelers ownership (the Rooney family) is the most patient in all of professional sports.  Getting a job as head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers is, perhaps, the safest job in the NFL. Fan support – Is anything better than seeing 65,000 gold-colored Terrible Towels being waved in support of your team at every home game? Yes, there is! It’s when you see 20,000 or more Terrible Towels being waved by fans at your opponent’s stadium on road games!  Only the Dallas Cowboys may have as many loyal football fans as the Steelers. A livable, lovable city – Pittsburgh is one of America’s top major metropolitan areas in terms of the cost of living and safety.  The Steel City (much like New Orleans) has a very unique local population which fervently follows their beloved NFL franchise for 365 days per year. And now…a few of the negatives. Expectations are sky high – every year!  Mike Tomlin appeared to be one of the most even-tempered head coaches in NFL history.  Pittsburgh is the city which was home to Mister Rogers (the PBS children’s TV star – not the quarterback).  Football fans and media in Pittsburgh reminded Coach Tomlin (daily) that he had lost six consecutive post-season games leading up to Monday night’s playoff game versus Houston. The Steelers have six Super Bowl trophies in their display case.  The next head coach will feel immediate pressure to win playoff games again – quickly. Can the new head coach turn around the Steelers’ pop gun offense?  Aaron Rodgers was a “band-aid” type of quarterback for the Steelers this season.  The 42-year old legend could not and should not be attempting to scramble or run from freight train-sized NFL defensive linemen anymore.  Steelers rookie quarterback Will Howard never left the bench during his first pro season.  Pittsburgh’s major investment in wide receiver D.K. Metcalf appears to be shaky after Year #1 with the team.  The Steelers need more speedy receivers who can reliably catch the football under pressure. Does the new coach look the part in Pittsburgh?  Mike Tomlin, Bill Cowher, and Chuck Noll had “the look” of someone intense enough and tough enough to command this rugged city’s pro football team. Projecting a personal toughness and strength will (initially) capture the hearts of Steeler Nation. Who does SwampSwami see as the next Pittsburgh Steelers head coach? A. Curt Cignetti Win or lose this coming Monday night vs. the University of Miami, Indiana Hoosiers football coach Curt Cignetti checks all of the boxes needed to turn the Pittsburgh Steelers into a top contender again. Did I say that the 64-year old college football coach is a Pittsburgh native?  Curt Cignetti signed a 7-year contract extension with the Hoosiers this fall.  Can the Steelers afford to pay for the buyout for his Indiana contract? Yes. Would they consider paying a sizable buyout in order to get Cignetti to Pittsburgh? Unlikely.  The Steelers’ ownership is notoriously thrifty.  B. Houston Texans’ head coach DeMeco Ryans Ryans is only 41 years of age (a year younger than this year’s Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers). The former All-Pro NFL linebacker has won ten or more games in each of his first three seasons as head coach of the Houston Texans.  Pittsburgh would need to provide significant compensation (draft picks and a lot of cash) to Houston in order to lure DeMeco Ryans to come coach in Steel City. Why would Ryans prefer Pittsburgh over Houston?  Have you ever lived in Houston during its six months of summer? C. One of these four relatively young NFL defensive coordinators Some names being floated today include Minnesota Vikings D-coordinator Mike Flores. He was formerly the head coach for the Miami Dolphins.  Flores’ exit from Miami became a bit messy, though.   My list of other top candidates includes Seattle Seahawks defensive guru Allen Durde, Green Bay’s Jeff Hafley, and Jesse Minter from the Los Angeles Chargers. There you have it!    SwampSwami’s list of his six top candidates for the Pittsburgh Steelers head coaching job! One name that I intentionally omitted was Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman.  He has been quoted recently saying he had no interest in a pro football head coaching position. Then again, don’t coaches ALWAYS say something like that – right before they leave? The Pittsburgh Steelers start the season with a win on the road! Our guest is a lifelong member of Steelers Nation: Chris Kirkpatrick of *NSYNC and the podcast "Name Drop." He'll reveal the origin of his black and gold passion, his favorite Steelers players, what went down at Troy Polamalu's celebrity flag football game, and how he's turning his son into the next generation of Steelers fans. Plus, some fans couldn't handle the drama of Week 1. We'll reveal those who have already thrown in their Terrible Towels. Despite Mike Tomlin's best efforts, some are trying to manifest a QB controversy. There's not a consensus yet about Arthur Smith, and some are already evoking the essence of Matt Canada. But on the flip side, others are already sizing up the defense for the Super Bowl rings. Lastly, why L.C. Greenwood has a chance, albeit slim, of finally getting a shrine in Canton. In todays episode, I will review the Ravens and Steelers game that once again lived up to the hype.  As we all know now the Ravens could have very much buried the Steelers for the season, however it would be off the fingertips of Mark Andrews that would cost us the game.  The call for a two-point conversion by Coach Harbaugh was definitely gusty, but what it needed? There were several fans and even analysts that went both ways, but most were critical of the actual play call and its execution.  With this heartbreaking loss, not only are the Steelers still alive in the playoff hunt, but the Ravens may lose the division lead.  With the injuries piling up within the locker room, the Ravens would lose yet another key player for the year, Marlon Humphrey.  What does this mean for the Ravens with just 5 games left to play? Can they still make a push despite a huge loss on defense?

Joe Zeff left Pittsburgh more than 30 years ago to pursue his career in journalism. Now, he's coming back and bringing his business along with him. Find out more about his pursuit to make Pittsburgh home again. Below is more about his Pittsburgh test: Today is the last day of The Pittsburgh Test, a life experiment to see what would happen if I were to drop everything and move back to my hometown for the month of July. My wife and I left Pittsburgh 29 years ago to pursue newspaper jobs in Detroit, then New York City. A decade later I shifted my focus from traditional journalism to interactive storytelling, starting a company that helps the world's biggest companies make their products and services more relatable to employees, customers and investors. When Covid hit, my business moved from rooms to Zooms, which meant I could work and live anywhere. So why not Pittsburgh? On July 1, The Pittsburgh Test began. I rented an apartment in Shadyside and an office in Bakery Square, directly across from Google. I launched a website; plastered my face on socks, hats and cardboard masks; and put up a billboard on Bigelow Boulevard. I connected with dozens of Pittsburghers — creators, investors, educators, innovators, former colleagues and classmates, and complete strangers. Along the way I uncovered storylines I hadn't expected. I've done my best to stay on top of changes in my hometown, but hadn't fully appreciated what Pittsburgh had become: A technology center that is redefining transportation and manufacturing through artificial intelligence and robotics.  A beachhead for giants like Facebook, Google and Zoom, which have significant footprints and plenty of room to expand. A bubbling stovetop of innovation and inspiration, stoked by Carnegie Mellon and the University of Pittsburgh and stirred by startups on every street corner. An endless supply of success stories; in July alone, Aurora announced a $2 billion SPAC merger and Duolingo made its NASDAQ debut, filling Times Square with Terrible Towels. A bicycle-friendly city with neighborhoods, waterfronts, vistas and restaurants that rival much larger cities, minus the bumper-to-bumper traffic and inaccessible cost of living. And so much more. It's not all rosy. Companies are growing fast but struggling to attract the talent they need. Diversity and inclusion remain sticking points. Venture capital seems to be looking elsewhere. These are fixable problems, remedied by telling better stories. I help companies sell products and services that customers can't easily see — things like banking, broadband, and cloud computing. In my work with AT&T, I've found that you can't adequately describe the magic of 5G by simply showing a router. Similarly, you can't depict the potential of Pittsburgh with a stock photograph of the Golden Triangle. You need to tell a story. A story that features some of the world's most recognizable companies, and hundreds more that you haven't yet heard of but most certainly will. A story with a through line from the hard-working steelworkers who put this city on the map to the scientists and inventors who continue to do so today. A story that showcases the roles that immigrants, minorities and LGBTQ+ people have played in reshaping this city's workforce. And so many more. These stories aren't being told enough. And if they are, they aren't making it to the people who need to hear them. I had to dig them up myself.  Others shouldn't have to. The results of The Pittsburgh Test have been consequential. I've decided to come home to help Pittsburgh and its companies tell better stories. Joe Zeff Design, Inc., opens for business at One PPG Place on October 1, armed with next-generation capabilities to make these stories resonate. Since making my decision I've been asked again and again why I would leave behind a perfectly good life in the New York City area to work and live in Pittsburgh. More often than not, the first thing people bring up is a sandwich stuffed with french fries. I need to fix that. And so does Pittsburgh. Let's get started.

Will Buffalo be a "home away from home" game for the Steelers? It's set to snow in Buffalo this Sunday, but aside from a "Snow Day" for the Steelers on the road, the Bills home field could not only be littered with white, but also with those black and gold Terrible Towels. How will the Steelers fare this weekend? A lot of people think that this game is the real test, dismissing the decisive victory over the Giants... because it was at home? Ben is a different animal at home, but he's also a different animal in the month of December: an absolute beast. But maybe those naysayers are right: can the Steelers make it 3 of 4 on the road? If they do, a postseason run might not be far behind. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The love Steelers fans have for their team is the stuff of legend: hordes of faithful waving Terrible Towels, wearing logo-emblazoned pajama pants, cheering in one of the nation’s more than 700 Steelers bars. So I figured the best way to learn the back-story of the logo was to go right to the source: Heinz Field, on a Sunday, an hour before kickoff.
