Rainbow Turtle Rebooted Fair Trade Podcast

Welcome to this special Christmas episode of the Rainbow Turtle Rebooted podcast where I'm delighted to be able to interview Pauline Tiffen of the Journal of Fair Trade. Ever since I started this series I have been trying to get Pauline onto it. I first heard her speak at a Scottish Fair Trade Forum lecture back in the summer of 2020, at the height of lock down, when she spoke about the future of fair trade. It struck me then that her thinking about fair trade was on a different level to mine. She's been involved in fair trade, or earlier versions of it, since the mid 1980s. She helped set up Cafe Direct and Divine Chocolate. Pauline was head hunted by the World Bank to look at ethical financing. And she currently edits the Journal of Fair Trade and is involved in the setting up of a business to business project, which links cooperative coffee farmers in landlocked Uganda and Rwanda with small coffee roasters and coffee shops around the UK.

There is no doubt that the roles that we play have and are changing.  How can they not?  Navigating the shift in vibrational realities means that who we are inevitably must shift.  As more people wake up to their own energy consciousness and realise that they are energetic in nature, who they are and what they want to experience is also awakened. So I ask myself if millions of people are waking up and seeking these questions, who are they asking them of and what is it like for the person who is carrying all of this energy every single day? This week's guest is that someone.  Larina Tiffen-Fuller is a Visionary, Priestess, Activator, Author, Medium, La Dame Blanche and a woman that gets shit done. She is the Founder and Owner of the award winning Miss Lilly's Catering and Priestess Lilly. Through her work as a Priestess, she holds space for clients and activates them to start the journey to truly embrace their pathway home to self. She hosts a radio show/podcast at Plains FM Canterbury, where her intention is to hold space for thought activating conservations with heart centred leaders, wisdom keepers and divine humans. Her hope for her radio show is to help her listeners to expand into their authenticity, soul purpose, with the overall goal to help activate humanity's consciousness to rise. Larina has many more crystals in her crown. She is a trained counsellor, Beautiful YOU  life coach, spellcaster, manifesting queen, channeller of other divine frequencies and seeker of the unknown. She lives with her husband Kristian aka Nugget, and their son Thomas in Aotearoa - New Zealand, in a countryside town called Rangiora. This is where she feels deeply grounded. As you will hear in this episode Lilly, works with people with their awakening experience and you can connect with her at her website https://www.priestesslilly.com

There's also some history about the View-Master, and we take a good look at two books of early crime scene photos. There's also Tiffen (@tiffen.sinclair on IG), zine reviews and some other fun along the way. Jon Hilty: DIY Autochromes In our last episode, we talked about autochrome color photos, basically saying that it couldn't be done. And with that, we got a bunch of folks messaging us, saying that we should talk to Jonathan Tod Hilty who had done it. IG: @amphetadreamer https://www.jonhilty.com/ A guide to making autochromes: https://www.jonhilty.com/autochromeguide It's a bit older, but here are some more pictures of the autochromes he's made: https://www.jonhilty.com/autochromegallery Here are some examples of the Lippmann plates: https://www.jonhilty.com/lippmanngallery Here are a few of his latest:   Short History of the View-Master The View-Master was introduced in April of 1939 at the New York Worlds Fair. This was also where RCA introduced television, Dupont introduced Nylon, and Einstein gave a speech about cosmic rays. What fairgoers witnessed was a futuristic improvement upon the stereocards of old. Using a stereoscope (which every antique store is legally required to sell), the grandparents of these spectators could look at 3D renderings of individual photographs, taken with special stereo cameras. Stereo photos pre-dated the Civil War, and so by 1939, they were old hat. What View-Master provided was an exciting update.  Round cardboard circles (which they called “reels”), held 14 16mm Kodachrome transparencies, which made seven pairs of photos – one for each eye. When looked at through a View-Master, they would be rendered in 3D. And with the flick of the lever, the reel would advance to the next 3D photo.  Here's a bunch of ads:   Murder vs. Death: Early 1900s Crime Scene Photos Back in April, we did an episode called Mugshots and Memorials (episode 41 if you were wondering). In the main feature, we talked about Alphonse Bertillon, the French police photographer responsible for the creation of mugshots. Bertillon, an exacting fellow, noted all sorts of things about the human face. He believed that things like ear size or arm length might determine someone's criminal potentiality. But oddly enough, we're not here to talk about Bertillon and his crime scene photographs. Not directly, anyway. A while back, we picked up two books on crime scene photos in hopes of making some larger piece with them.  The first, Murder in the City, a collection of glass plates from New York City in the 1910s and 20s, is very much in the vein of Bertillon – it's almost classy. The other, called Death Scenes, is a book of crime scene photos from 1940s LA. It's very candid, very matter-of-fact. Though the subjects are dead bodies, the way they are photographed is nearly the opposite of Bertillon – at least as far as unintentional artfulness went. It might seem a little obvious that photos of murder victims would be potentially unnerving and upsetting. But we weren't really prepared to deal with the photos in one of these two books. We're not sharing many photos from either book, but here are some photos about the God's Eye View Tripod setup: But here are some of Eugene de Salignac's photos:   Zine Reviews Future Condos by Jesse Rinyu – @jrinyu on IG   Toy Golf by Garon Kiesel (@grain_or_die on IG) PATREON Thank you to everyone who supports us! She's just starting her drone business, and is ready to share her story. Join us this week as we chat with Liesl Leonard from Hull, England! Liesl Leonard has been interested in photography for a long time, and her love for drones grew as a result of Instagram. She started following a variety of accounts that were publishing drone related content, including Women Who Drone. Immediately inspired by the female drone community, she fully credits Women Who Drone for convincing her to purchase her first drone! Her first drone was a second hand DJI Phantom 3 Advanced, and has since upgraded to the Mavic 2 Pro. She is absolutely in love with the Mavic 2 Pro, and its helped her take her aerial photography skills to the next level. As with many drone photographers, Liesl is looking at picking up a set of ND/PL filters. She currently has her eye on both Polar Pro and Tiffen, as well as another lesser known brand that is about half the price. Asking around in the forums, she's found that it's about a 50/50 split between Polar Pro and Tiffen, so she thinks that she's ultimately going to go with one of them. After the shoot, Liesl is a big fan of editing her own work. She loves spending time in Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop. Her first step is Lightroom, where she occasionally uses presets to start the photo off. More often than not though, she ends up touching up the photos on her own and not being over reliant on presets. Since she's just launching her drone business, she's looking for ways to market her services to prospective clients. In this episode, we chat about targeting potential clients via social media, specifically Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and LinkedIn. Ultimately Liesl wants to take aerial photos and video of a variety of places around the UK. She currently doesn't have an interest in surveying, as she truly enjoys creating beautiful photos for her clients.

Which filter systems are good for what purpose, what kind of filters are useful to reach good landscape results, how many filters do you really need, and which brand should you buy?   In this More Gear Show #19, Marco shares his thoughts and experiences on these topics with you:   What about UV-, Skylight-, or De-Haze-Filters?   Is there still a use for color filters in digital photography?   Do you need a polarizing filter in your bag?   How can you use ND and ND-Grad filters to create creative images or make people disappear? And why a 10-stop ND filter may be a lot less than you need.   Why should anyone own an IR filter as a creative tool?   When you should buy round filters that attach directly to your lens and how you can save money by buying the biggest filter.   What is the purpose of a filter holder system for square filters and how can they benefit your creative options?   How to work with different filters in a filter holder system and square filters? And why you should not mix filters from different manufacturers.   Which brand filters should you buy? B+W, Haida, Tiffen, Lee, Formatt Hitech, or Hoya? Should you buy glass or plastic filters and what filter size do you need for your sensor size? Every year, B&H hosts the OPTIC Imaging Conference, showcasing the best nature, landscape, and travel photography. The 2016 edition was a stellar outing, with presentations by the most interesting photographers working in those fields. It also serves as a chance for participants to put their hands on the latest cameras, lenses, and gear from the major manufacturers. In today's episode we talk with gear experts from the most respected camera, lens and accessory manufacturers. Sigma: 2:10 Fujifilm: 10:18 Canon: 16:40 ------------------------- Lensbaby: 24:40 Sony: 35:20 Panasonic: 45:35 ------------------------ Tiffen: 54:12 Tamron: 61:17 Nikon: 68:46 OPTIC is a wonderful opportunity to embrace photography, interact with incredible photographers, and play with the latest tools of the trade. This year, legends such as Michael Kenna and Paul Caponigro spoke and presented work, and we will be sharing our conversations with them and other photographers in future episodes, but today we feature a collection of our talks with representatives of the major camera and lens makers. And while we tried to have them divulge secrets for their as-of-yet-unannounced marvels waiting for us on the designer’s tables, we had to settle for updates on their newest cameras, lenses, filters, and adapters. We also snuck in some chat about the current and future state of the camera industry, and a few laughs to boot.
