In this episode of TAG Data Talk, Dr. Beverly Wright discusses with Jorge Figueroa: AI Monopoly - Join or fight. Some developers are scared about AI being monopolized instead of thinking about the possibilities and opportunities new AI platforms represent in their projects. AI - A new danger to some professions or a new tool?  Will use reporting as an example. Reports were created by IT specialists and were fixed and timely to create. These were mostly replaced by BI tools. Surely there were report-experts how thought BI was a danger to their work at some point in time that later migrated to using BI tools and found them a great evolution from basic reporting. Even when integrating ML or Data Science projects is faster and easier with newly available platforms and resources, experts are still needed to work out these integrations. You should not consider your expertise replaced but empowered by these new tools. Millions of research hours and dollars in investment are now at your disposal to expedite your work. I recently had a talk with some friends from the art community and they feel threatened by tools like Dall-e, Stable Diffusion, Craiyon, etc. I explained new tools often look threatening to some professions but are an opportunity. Those who learn to use them faster and better have an advantage over others. As an example, Prompt Engineering is now an important competence.

Entertainment lawyer Wynton Yates shares his perspective on AI art generators, copyright infringement, and the legal questions being debated right now. And transmedia artist Stephanie Dinkins dives into how she uses AI in her work while maintaining her curiosity and excitement for the future of art and technology.

Dan & Paul hash over the benefits & flaws of working with other people in your TTRPG design, DM'ing, nd play! Collaboration (from Latin com- "with" + laborare "to labor", "to work") is the process of two or more people, entities or organizations working together to complete a task or achieve a goal. Collaboration is similar to cooperation. Most collaboration requires leadership,[vague] although the form of leadership can be social within a decentralized and egalitarian group. Teams that work collaboratively often access greater resources, recognition and rewards when facing competition for finite resources. Structured methods of collaboration encourage introspection of behavior and communication. Such methods aim to increase the success of teams as they engage in collaborative problem-solving. Collaboration is present in opposing goals exhibiting the notion of adversarial collaboration, though this is not a common use of the term. In its applied sense, "(a) collaboration is a purposeful relationship in which all parties strategically choose to cooperate in order to accomplish a shared outcome." Dan & Paul sit down with Linda Codega, the exceptional journalist at io9/Gizmodo who broke the story of WOTC planning to de-authorize the Open Game License that's been used for D&D-compatible and other games for over 20 years -- and subsequently forced a total surrender by WOTC on their sinister plans! How did Linda catch and produce this game-changing story? How does one balance journalism and activism? Will the D&D and indie gaming industry ever be the same? Linda Codega, for Io9 in January 2023, reported on the details from a leaked full copy of the OGL 1.1 including updated terms such as no longer authorizing use of the OGL1.0. Codega explained that while the original OGL granted a "perpetual, worldwide, non-exclusive license" it also included language around authorized versions of the license – "according to attorneys consulted for this article, the new language may indicate that Wizards of the Coast is rendering any future use of the original OGL void, and asserting that if anyone wants to continue to use Open Game Content of any kind, they will need to abide by the terms of the updated OGL, which is a far more restrictive agreement than the original OGL". The document also states that the intention of the OGL was not "to fund major competitors and it wasn't intended to allow people to make D&D apps, videos, or anything other than printed (or printable) materials for use while gaming". In a statement to EN World, Dancey – former VP of Wizards of the Coast and the architect of OGL1.0 – said, "my public opinion is that Hasbro does not have the power to deauthorize a version of the OGL. If that had been a power that we wanted to reserve for Hasbro, we would have enumerated it in the license. I am on record numerous places in email and blogs and interviews saying that the license could never be revoked". Following an apology issued by Wizards of the Coast, the company released a new draft (titled OGL 1.2) for public comment on January 19. It would put some of the Dungeon & Dragons mechanics under a Creative Commons license, while other material would be covered by OGL 1.2. Unlike the leaked OGL 1.1, the proposed OGL 1.2 contains "no royalty payment, no financial reporting, no license-back, no registration, no distinction between commercial and non-commercial". The proposed OGL 1.2 does de-authorize the OGL1.0a; it would also be "irrevocable, although there's still a severability clause should a part of the license is held to be unenforceable or invalid". Along with the proposed OGL 1.2, Wizards released a separate virtual tabletop (VTT) policy. On January 27, 2023, Wizards of the Coast announced that following feedback during the open comment for OGL1.2 they had decided to release the System Reference Document 5.1 (SRD 5.1) under an irrevocable creative commons license (CC-BY-4.0) effect immediately and would no longer pursue deauthorizing the OGL1.0a. There may not be a corner of the internet garnering more buzz today than Ai. Specifically, Ai-generated art is creating quite a stir. One side of Ai art that wasn't expected is a woman named Loab. In April of 2022 a user creating with an Ai-art generator created a terrifying image of a woman. This user subsequently recreated the woman in increasingly horrifying forms for months before releasing the photos to the public. He named her Loab after the text generated in one of the many images. The image is significant because of the sheer volume of images that have been created representing her. Furthermore, the gruesome nature of the images is unlike anything else in Ai art. Some believe there's a ghost in the machine. Like all other things in computing, there is a perfectly logical explanation.Things I Learned Last Night is an educational comedy podcast where best friends Jaron Myers and Tim Stone talk about random topics and have fun all along the way. Word has leaked that WOTC aims to terminate the OGL license used for 3rd-party D&D-compatible products for the last 20+ over years. Can they do it? Are all existing 3rd-party products about to be made illegal? What can it mean for the hobby and industry going forward? In August 2022, Wizards of the Coast launched a public playtest of the next version of Dungeons & Dragons under the One D&D initiative. In November 2022, there was reported speculation that the OGL would be discontinued for this new iteration of Dungeons & Dragons based on unconfirmed leaks. In response to the speculation, Wizards of the Coast stated in November 2022: "We will continue to support the thousands of creators making third-party D&D content with the release of One D&D in 2024. While it is certain our Open Game License (OGL) will continue to evolve, just as it has since its inception, we're too early in the development of One D&D to give more specifics on the OGL or System Reference Document (SRD) at this time". Following concerns raised by third-party Dungeons & Dragons creators on the potential changes to the OGL, in December 2022, Wizards of the Coast released additional details on the upcoming OGL 1.1 which will go into effect in 2023. This new license will clarify that it only applies to "printed media or static electronic files (like epubs and PDFs)" and "only covers material created for use in or as TTRPGs"; OGL 1.1 will not cover other content such as video games or virtual tabletops (VTTs). Content creators using OGL 1.1 will be required "to put an official OGL badge on their products". Revenue related to OGL content must be reported to Wizards of the Coast if that revenue exceeds $50,000 annually; creators who make at least $750,000 in income annually will be required to pay a royalty starting in 2024. We argue a lot about what the episode is supposed to be about, but ultimately land on churros. And why not? They're delicious and... filled with toppings... including meat and cheese? Maybe we don't know what a churro actually is. But we do know chips! We've even dug a hole in our backyard for them. Huh, maybe we're confused about that too.

Dan & Paul chat with Griffith Morgan about the new upcoming Kickstarter for the Lost Dungeons of Tonisborg! In 1971, Greg Svenson and his friends took part in the very first dungeon adventure game, Blackmoor, created by their friend, Dave Arneson. Then, in the summer of 1973, as Dave Arneson and Gary Gygax worked to complete the manuscript for Dungeons & Dragons, Greg was given a play-test copy of this novel new game. He used these rules to create his own adventure dungeon, The Dungeons of Tonisborg. One day, Greg loaned his maps to a friend to make copies. An unexpected disaster struck: the maps, stowed in an old magazine, were thrown away. All ten original map levels of Greg's epic mega-dungeon were thought lost forever. This lost map set came to be known as The Lost Dungeons of Tonisborg among the "Blackmoor Bunch." Thirty-five years later, during the making of the documentary film, Secrets of Blackmoor, a mysterious set of photocopied dungeon maps was unearthed. D. H. Boggs emailed copies to Greg Svenson, who instantly recognized his own handwriting, declaring that these old photocopies were indeed copies of his original Tonisborg Dungeon. Now published with extensive background information, The Lost Dungeons of Tonisborg is not like any RPG Game Module you've ever encountered before. Read more on the Lost Dungeons of Tonisborg here Wandering DMs Paul Siegel and Dan “Delta” Collins host thoughtful discussions on D&D and other TTRPGs every week. After a short break, Noah and Vivian return with another episode of JPEG2000 and it is another episode on artificial intelligence. This episode of J2k is sponsored by Dirt, a daily(ish) newsletter about digital pop culture and entertainment. JPEG2000 is still brought to you by Context.app, the best way to keep up with what's happening in web3. Context is also behind mint.fun, a product that allows you to mint new NFT projects safely from one interface.Since their previous episode about AI (episode 2), the conversation around AI has exploded and gone viral. Dall-e mini memes proliferated everywhere utilizing Dall-E mini now known as Craiyon, a text prompt AI image generator. An artist utilizing AI won first place in an art context, and the New York Times wrote about it. With that has also come skepticism, criticism, and fear regarding AI. Noah recalls an episode of his previous podcast All Consuming, he co-hosted with Adam Lisagor where he tests and discusses an AI tool called Parlo. Noah discusses his consistent discomfort about AI. William Wiebe is an artist and researcher whose work deals with machine perception, and created a project called SMPLVERSE which utilizes a synthetic data set created by Microsoft to train face tracking algorithms to translate facial expressions into the VR experiences. When connecting your wallet, you are prompted to take an image of yourself which is matched to one of the images in the data set. Vivian's Smpl can be seen here. Noah's is here. Noah calls Vivian in the middle of recording because he thinks the episode is too dense and needs a break. They collect a piece from Maya Man's project Fake It Till You Make it. Vivian revisits unused audio from David Young, artist and guest in JPEG2000's first episode on AI. David shares his concerns about bias issues with machine learning. This leads to a conversation where Noah discusses his thoughts about the ethics of AI and references an article by waxy.org. Noah and Vivian have a back and forth on the subject. During the Rose and Thorn portion of the show, Noah complains about Adobe and Vivian complains about COVID. JPEG2000 is edited and engineered by Paul O'Mara. The JPEG2000 music is by piano extraordinaire Yuri Beats. Noah and Vivian love attention so give them a call and leave a message on the JPEG2000 hotline by calling 845-377-3484.

What a way to make a livin'. We spit ball about games that we have played over the past three months in “Quick Fire” fashion. Some we liked, some we didn't, and one was a surprising disappointment. I used Craiyon to generate the cover by typing the phrase, “Ark Nova is not our jam.” Feel free to jump over there and let an AI generate your nightmares. Here's to more games in the future.
