Episode 70 Can TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) provide a new cure for a variety of mental health issues and addictions?I think that mental health struggles are one of the biggest issues of our society today. Which may explain why I am constantly coming back to a variety of ways to tackle it. This week I am honored to be joined by Gaby Pell of Brainsway (www.brainsway.com) a company partially based here in Israel who has developed a method of brain stimulation to treat a variety of mental health disorders, addictions and eventually brain injury. Anything that can help especially when non invasive may be worth a try for so many struggling. I am so excited to have one of my best friends Heather Cohnen joining me for this week's extro. Prisca Nwizubo is a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner who found herself most at home working with mental health and illness in innovative ways including especially with Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation and runs Eastside TMS Wellness in Washington State. She brings us through her journey that starts in a public area in Nigeria at age 6 years old seeing a group of mentally ill people being mistreated by their guards or caretakers, all the way through to this cutting-edge modern TMS technology. She walks us through the process that includes consultation, mapping to target the neural location, and then the 'tap tap tap like a woodpecker' sensation of their 18-minute treatment. This is an FDA-approved treatment, generally covered by insurance and lasts across 36 sessions. TMS seems able to reach illness patterns where and when medications might not. While mental health conditions like depression and anxiety are obvious treatment targets, TMS has also been used for Bell's Palsy, Circadian Rhythm disturbances and other sleep issues.
