On March 11, 2022, Hanya Yanagihara returned to the John Adams for a conversation about 'To Paradise', her three-part story across three centuries, centered around New York City. To Paradise is a revisionist American history – not identical to the America as we know it but a ‘what if' narrative, invested in raising concerns about America as a nation: what it has been, what it might have been and what it could be. An epic tale told across multiple timelines and characters, separate from each other, but providing major themes and takeaways for the reader. “A masterpiece of our time,” according to The Guardian.Support the show
Oh dear listeners - Elisa has answered Edward's prayers. We're talking about food today! Specifically: some of the best food experiences we've had in life so far. We also discuss the 8th season of Alone. So, if you haven't seen, then like...massive spoilers. Alyson doesn't eat some lobster pasta. Edward eats something sooo greasy. Bears are trying to eat naked humans. And in the end, we're all just hungry, hungry hippos. --- This week on amfpod.com: a review of To Paradise! --- Want to leave us a message? Author of the wildly popular and, at times, controversial A Little Life, Hanya Yanagihara, is out with a new novel. To Paradise is an epic – in three parts – sprawling over 700 pages and 200 years about a make-believe New York City. Yanagihara was mostly through writing her story, which features pandemics prominently, when COVID-19 first hit in early 2020. But Yanagihara told NPR's Scott Simon that she was able to keep her story and her fears about the pandemic in reality separate.
To Paradise is the first novel by Hanya Yanagihara since her decades-spanning saga of survival and suffering A Little Life won over the world and became a Booker Prize–shortlisted bestseller. Her follow-up is even more ambitious in scope, traversing some three centuries and differing versions of America, and exploring themes of love, loss and the elusive promise of utopia in a fictionalised New York. Hanya speaks with Anton Enus. If you enjoyed this episode, please rate and subscribe to our channel. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Every year there are a handful of books that cross from literary masterpiece into cultural touchstone. Hanya Yanagihara's second novel, A Little Life, was one of those novels and catapulted her onto the world stage. Her latest work, To Paradise, takes readers into relationships in the present, the future and an alternate imagined past of America and looks at how the country's image of itself stacks up to the reality.

This encore podcast was originally posted on March 17, 2016 and was recorded on February 22, 2016. Hanya Yanagihara's 2015 novel, A Little Life, made a huge splash in the literary world. This story of a group of friends in New York , this long narrative received terrific reviews and was one of six finalists for the prestigious Man Booker Prize. A former editor for Conde Nast Traveler, Hanya Yanagihara is currently the Editor in Chief (since 2017) for T, the style magazine of the New York Times. She's lived in Los Angeles, New York and Honolulu, and spent far too much time eating granola bars in overpriced hotels. Her first novel, The People in the Trees, was published in 2013. Her third novel, To Paradise, was published in January 2022. The post Hanya Yanagihara, “A Little Life,” 2016 appeared first on KPFA.

In this episode, the hosts discuss the second part of Hanya Yanagihara's highly anticipated 2022 release, To Paradise. This episode is full of spoilers for the first part and second part of the book (Book One, "Washington Square" and Book Two, "Lipo-Wao-Nahele,"). They share some updates on their plan moving forward handling this book. (*Huge apologies for any disruptive background noise! We did our best to navigate recording around some major construction happening and didn't want to skip *another* week. We did our best to edit it out.)
Amy and Emily spar over background noise and almost forget they are supposed to be talking about books amidst other concerns like who rolls Snoop Dogg's blunts, Justin Timberlake, the Olympics, postal fraud, and sulfite sensitivity. They finally manage to get on topic about "To Paradise" by Hanya Yanigahara, "The Fortune Men" by Nadifa Mohamed, "Hamnet" by Maggie O'Farrell and more!
TO PARADISE by Hanya Yanagihara & HOW SOCCER EXPLAINS THE WORLD: AN [UNLIKELY] THEORY OF GLOBALIZATION. On this week's show, we examine the book on everyone's lips, the talk of the town – you guessed it – HOW SOCCER EXPLAINS THE WORLD: AN [UNLIKELY] THEORY OF GLOBALIZATION by Franklin Foer (we also cover a lesser known book called TO PARADISE by Hanya Yanagihara). We talk prescient writers (and surprising facts!), taking chairs, and how to trick people into being our friend. Also, we ask the question: does Dillon have any idea what soccer is? Seriously, I don't think he's ever heard of it…
BAM!
In this episode, the hosts discuss the first part of Hanya Yanagihara's highly anticipated 2022 release, To Paradise. This episode is full of spoilers for just the first part ("Washington Square"). Stay tuned for further discussion in the coming weeks!

From Hanya Yanagihara, the author of A Little Life, comes To Paradise, a bold, brilliant novel spanning three centuries and three different versions of the American experiment, about lovers, family, loss and the elusive promise of utopia. In conversation with Barrie Hardymon, the Senior Editor at NPR's Weekend Edition and the lead editor for books. This program was held on January 10, 2022 in partnership with Politics and Prose.
For this episode of 1A's Sunday Podcast, we bring you two conversations with two authors. First, we speak with Hanya Yanagihara about her new novel, "To Paradise." It's topped almost every list of the most anticipated books of 2022. We talk to Hanya about her new novel and her work as a magazine editor.Later, we speak with British author Bernardine Evaristo. In 2019, she won the Booker Prize for her novel "Girl, Woman, Other." She's the first Black woman to do so in the award's 53-year history. But before that, she had a long career writing plays, poetry, and short stories centered around the African diaspora. Her new memoir, "Manifesto,"is a story of perseverance. We talk with Evaristo about finding her voice and never letting it go.Want to support 1A? “And when you are lucky enough as a writer to have your book be found, and then have it be a source of someone's passion, someone who is not normally spoken to by the book publishing industry, who then with generosity and real passion, finds a way to tell other people about it, you cannot get luckier than that.” Hanya Yanagihara's second novel, A Little Life was already a word-of-mouth must read, a finalist for the Man Booker Prize and the National Book Award and winner of the Kirkus Prize when #Booktok introduced Jude & Co. to a new set of readers and kicked the book's sales into the stratosphere. Hanya's following up her massive hit with To Paradise, a story of love and ambition, loneliness and freedom, that cuts across time and reimagined Americas. Hanya joins us on the show to talk about Hawaii and New York, her admiration for the novels of Kazuo Ishiguro, what paradise means for her characters, the helix of history, and more. Featured Books: To Paradise and A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara, The Remains of the Day and Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro, The Hours by Michael Cunningham, and Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell.
