Hosts John Cribbs and Christopher Funderburg are joined by Marcus Pinn to discuss their memories of attending the Toronto International Film Festival over the course of twenty years. This set of personal reminiscences is not necessarily intended for general audiences; this is the deepest of Pink Smoke deep cuts. Their thoughts on two decades of cinema and one of the premiere international film festivals are intertwined with a discussion of poutine, junk shops selling rare novelizations, the Brass Rail and how much fun it is to bust Pinn's chops over his love of To The Wonder. They talk their favorite films they saw at the festival, their most memorable experiences, the changes to the festival throughout the years, the best years, the worst years, food poisoning, Andrew Wilson, Sportos in Batavia New York, crank-call party mix-tapes and, of course, the Eagles' sudden and unexpected transition from the Kevin Kolb era to the Michael Vick era. A tribute to one of the most important film festivals in the world and the trio's time spent there. Producer and filmmaker Chadd Harbold returns to the show to discuss Terrence Malick's awe-inspiring WWII epic The Thin Red Line. The film marked Malick's return to the director's chair after a 20 year absence from filmmaking and features an ensemble cast of dozens of recognizable faces, including many massive stars of the period reduced to mere minutes of screen time and a handful of lines of dialogue. Based on the James Jones novel of the same name, the movie is unlike any war film ever made and showcases Malick venturing deeper into his style of meandering camerawork, striking images of the natural world, and contemplative monologues delivered in voiceover (occasionally by actors we seldom see onscreen). We discuss the storied, decade-long journey of getting The Thin Red Line to screen, a process that involved Malick spending heaps of cash satisfying every one of his fleeting whims and every actor in Hollywood vying for a spot on the film's massive roster characters. Then, we discuss the film's juxtaposition of horrific war imagery with breathtaking shots of wildlife and nature - a visual contrast that enhances Malick's existential preoccupations with the nature of good and evil, darkness and light in the world. Finally, we praise Malick's working method, and how his decision to "shoot everything" allows his films to be born in the edit, often taking on thematic and visual nuances that were far from intentional on set, on the day. Chadd produced a new movie, Crumb Catcher, which is out in theaters TODAY 7/19/24. Check showtimes at your local Drafthouse or AMC. The BIGGEST drama of the year to air, in our opinion, is the HIGHLY anticipated season 2 of Joy of Life or Qing Yu Nian. It is slated to air on May 16 with most of the cast returning from season 1 and a number of new characters joining the cast. Outside of that, In the Name of the Brother featuring Yang Mi has not gone over well with audiences despite her heavy marketing of her improvement in acting. Meanwhile Cathy enjoyed the modern love story of Will Love in Spring. An interesting short series To The Wonder is also piquing our interest.

On this episode we discuss the choices of Terrence Malick. New release KNIGHT OF CUPS goes back to similar territory about choices in love, or how the lack of making a choice has lead to an unfulfilling existence, which we also see play out in his previous films THE NEW WORLD and TO THE WONDER. However both of those films differ greatly in providing a straightforward narrative, so we also discuss the continued evolution of Malick as a filmmaker, where he assaults the viewer with an unrelenting amount of visual choices, and confounds them with his storytelling choices of dropping characters in and out of his films with little or no explanation. Unable to explain KNIGHT OF CUPS, we make the choice to discuss timing your sexual prowess by the length of a GREEN DAY song, how THE TREE OF LIFE is similar to BRING IT ON, and also a shoutout to NBA legend Tom Chambers.

With John Wilson Damien Hirst talks about humour in art, on the day that a limited edition of 50 signed prints of his diamond encrusted skull go on sale for Red Nose Day. Entitled, For The Love Of Comic Relief, the prints show the skull wearing a glittery red nose, and each is priced at £2500. All proceeds go to Comic Relief. To The Wonder, a new film directed by Terrence Malick and starring Ben Affleck, explores themes of love and separation. Critic Briony Hanson reviews the latest art house film from the director who made his name with Badlands and Days Of Heaven. American-born painter R.B. Kitaj was one of The School Of London: a group of artists, which included Francis Bacon and Lucian Freud, who pioneered a new, figurative art. In 1994 a Tate exhibition of his work provoked a torrent of negative reviews, which Kitaj termed The Tate War. This, coupled with the sudden death of his wife, prompted him to leave London for Los Angeles a couple of years later. He died in 2007. Now, in the first major exhibition since then, two galleries are jointly displaying a retrospective of his paintings. Art critic Richard Cork joins John to consider Kitaj's work, and assess the rights and wrongs of The Tate War. Director Marc Isaacs takes John down the stretch of the A5 which inspired his documentary The Road: A Story Of Life And Death. It tells the stories of immigrants who seek a better life in London - facing struggles, loneliness and sometimes tragedy. Starting at London's Marble Arch, Isaacs discusses the areas and characters he met, and how he made the film. Producer Rebecca Nicholson.

A Filmklub podcast harmadik adásában a velencei filmfesztiválon szerzett élményeinkről beszélgetünk. Vendégünk Bognár Péter, a magyar filmforgalmazás szürke eminenciása (vagy mostanában bujdosó Rákóczija), aki az utóbbi pár évben a Magyarhangya mozgalom társalapítójaként puhatolja, hogyan lehet kultúrát eljuttatni a közönséghez. A velencei felhozatalból tizenöt filmről ejtünk szót: The Master, Fill The Void, Passion, Pieta, Outrage: Beyond, Spring Breakers, To The Wonder, Thy Womb, Paradise: Faith, Betrayal, The Company You Keep, Me Too, Harry Dean Stanton: Partly Fiction, Bad 25, The Tightrope. Kiderül, hogy miért a velencei a legszimpatikusabb filmfesztivál, kitárgyaljuk a szombat este kiosztott díjak jogosságát, és megpróbáljuk megsaccolni, hogy a Velencében bemutatott filmek közül melyikeket láthatjuk majd a magyar mozikban is.
