Une exposition lui a été consacrée au Musée d'Art Moderne en 2009. Admirateur de Hans Josephsohn, il découvre son travail au Kesselhaus Josephsohn de Saint-Gall où il réside. In this episode of The Art Bystander, our host Roland-Philippe Kretzschmar meets with Nicolas Hugo, the now leader of Ateliers Hugo.Ateliers Hugo, nestled in Aix en Provence, France, has been a bastion of creativity since the early 1950s, crafting exquisite jewelry and limited-edition objects in gold. Their legacy intertwines with history, embracing tradition, skilled craftsmanship, and collaboration with legendary artists, sparking a renaissance in artist-made jewelry. In the aftermath of World War II, François and Monique Hugo founded Ateliers Hugo, initially focusing on crafting enamel and metal buttons and objects for fashion and commercial ventures, collaborating with esteemed designers like Chanel and Elsa Schiaparelli. Surrounded by the artistic milieu of the South of France, Hugo cultivated friendships with luminaries such as Picasso, Derain, and Ernst, igniting a movement where artists experimented with jewelry as an art form. The journey continued as Picasso and others sought collaborations with Hugo, laying the foundation for a pioneering era in jewelry artistry from 1956 to 1961. This period witnessed artists like Cocteau infusing their distinctive visions into small, gold objects, transcending commercial considerations for pure artistic exploration.A "second wave" emerged in the late 1960s and 1970s under Pierre Hugo's stewardship, marrying experimentation with commercial viability. Collaborations with artists like Arman, César, and Salvador Dali birthed masterpieces that adorned museums and galleries worldwide, elevating jewelry to coveted collectibles.Despite soaring demand, Ateliers Hugo remained a closely-knit family business, cherishing tradition and familial bonds. The studio's ethos, deeply entrenched in familial heritage, fosters a culture where lunchtime gatherings are as sacred as the craft itself. In the contemporary era, under the leadership of Nicolas Hugo, Ateliers Hugo continues its legacy, collaborating with artists like Ugo Rondinone and Eric Croes, bridging the past with the present. Upholding tradition while embracing modernity, they maintain their unique stamp, rooted in time-honored techniques passed down through generations. With a commitment to serving artists and bearing witness to the zeitgeist, Ateliers Hugo preserves its legacy while illuminating the artistic landscape of today, embodying a timeless mission of creativity and cultural stewardship. Ep.170 MAREN HASSINGER (b. 1947) has built an interdisciplinary practice that articulates the relationship between nature and humanity. Carefully choosing materials for their innate characteristics, Hassinger has explored the subject of movement, family, love, nature, environment, consumerism, identity, and race. The artist uses her materials to mimic nature, whether bundling it to resemble a monolithic sheaf of wheat or planting it in cement to create an industrial garden. Within the past five years, the artist has executed commissions for Dia Bridgehampton, Socrates Sculpture Park, the Hirshhorn Museum, and the Aspen Art Museum. Work is currently installed on the terrace of the Art Institute of Chicago, along the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, at Longhouse Reserve in East Hampton, and in Ugo Rondinone's Sculpture Milwaukee. Hassinger will be included in the upcoming exhibition Groundswell: Women of Land Art at the Nasher Sculpture Center, Dallas and will be honored with an upcoming two-person survey alongside Senga Nengudi at IVAM, Valencia as well as an exhibition focused on their work in performance at the Cooley Gallery, Reed College, Portland, OR. She is the recipient of the Women's Caucus for the Arts Lifetime Achievement Award. Her work can be found at the Art Institute of Chicago; the Hirshhorn Museum; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the Museum of Modern Art, NYC; the San Francisco Museum of Art; the Walker Art Center, and the Whitney Museum, among others.  Photo credit ~ Museum Associates/LACMA  Susan Inglett Gallery https://www.inglettgallery.com/artists/255-maren-hassinger/overview/Smithsonian | Hirshhorn Museum  https://hirshhorn.si.edu/explore/maren-hassinger-hirshhorn-artist-diaries/ Getty https://www.getty.edu/news/getty-acquires-maren-hassinger-archive/ Dia Art https://www.diaart.org/exhibition/exhibitions-projects/maren-hassinger-exhibition-301 LongHouse Reserve https://longhouse.org/products/artist-maren-hassinger MICA https://www.mica.edu/graduate-programs/rinehart-school-of-sculpture-mfa/maren-hassinger/ Inquirer https://www.inquirer.com/arts/schuylkill-river-public-art-steel-bodies-philadelphia-20230623.html Brooklyn Rail https://brooklynrail.org/events/2023/06/02/maren-hassinger-process/ Culture Type https://www.culturetype.com/2023/09/05/latest-news-in-black-art-sonia-boyce-now-represented-by-hauser-wirth-getty-acquires-maren-hassinger-archive-tomashi-jackson-wins-rappaport-prize-more/ The Grio https://thegrio.com/2023/09/08/getty-acquires-archive-of-renowned-artist-maren-hassinger/ Sculpture Milwaukee  https://www.sculpturemilwaukee.com/nature-doesnt-know-about-us/maren-hassinger MCAD https://www.mcad.edu/events/visiting-artist-lecture-maren-hassinger Art Pil https://artpil.com/announcements/maren-hassinger-process/ MICA https://www.mica.edu/graduate-programs/rinehart-school-of-sculpture-mfa/maren-hassinger/ Wikipedia   https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maren_Hassinger MoMA https://www.moma.org/artists/41280 Hammer https://hammer.ucla.edu/now-dig-this/artists/maren-hassinger Socrates Sculpture Park  https://socratessculpturepark.org/artist/maren-hassinger/ Artic https://www.artic.edu/exhibitions/10139/maren-hassinger-this-is-how-we-grow Association For Public Art https://www.associationforpublicart.org/apa-now/news/the-association-for-public-art-brings-maren-hassingers-steel-bodies-to-philadelphia/ The Great Northern Festival https://thegreatnorthernfestival.com/2023/maren-hassinger-love-for-minneapolis The Art Newspaper https://www.theartnewspaper.com/2023/08/30/maren-hassinger-archive-acquired-getty-research-institute Beverly Press https://beverlypress.com/2023/09/hassinger-works-added-to-getty-archive/

Check out a picture gallery of Seven Magic Mountains on the Full Metal Traveler website and subscribe to the FMT podcast on Apple Podcasts or Spotify. Ten miles south of Las Vegas, Nevada, seven towers cut through the desert sky. They stand taller than one might think if you’re simply driving by on Interstate 15, on your way to lose your hard earned money in a gilded casino. At first glance they don’t seem that impressive from far away. It’s easy to dismiss them. But their brilliant and bold colors stand in stark contrast to the mountain ranges, desert and dry lake backdrop that surround them. According to the creator, Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone, this location is the physical and symbolic halfway point between the natural and the artificial. The natural being the desert landscape. The artificial, of course, being the glitz and glamour of the casino lights as well as the constant traffic buzzing between Los Angeles and Sin City. It’s hard to argue the point. The boulders themselves teeter on top of one another, seemingly about to tip over at any moment. They rise thirty to thirty-five feet in the air, breathlessly creating an aura of the supernatural around them. Calling back to our primitive natures when we could neither understand nor fathom how man or nature could create something so big. The locally-sourced lime boulders were cut with precision, painted and stacked in just a few months time, opening in 2016. In this short amount of time they have become a hot spot for tourists, Instagrammable photo seekers, and curious locals all the same. Each one taking something different with them once they leave. The Swiss have a proverb that loosely translates to this: “Sometimes you have to be silent to be heard.” In this place, these towers, these Seven Magic Mountains, speak the loudest, reminding us, albeit for a brief moment that we are both part of the natural world and artificially molded by the noise and chaos we create in it.

Launching first at MPavilion as part of our 2015/16 season, 25XDesign uses an experimental platform called Story Spheres, developed by Google’s Creative Lab. Story Spheres takes a 360-degree image and overlays it with audio files so that, for the first time, you can experience MPavilion and other Melbourne design landmarks up, down and all around with sound. Story Spheres uses experimental browser technologies including webGL and 3js and can be viewed on desktop, mobile and through Google Cardboard—giving people a virtual-reality experience. 25XDesign will become an annual, virtual event on the MPavilion program, featuring a new Melbourne tour created by each year’s commissioned architect. The project aims to place MPavilion centrally but also expand its reach geographically. We look forward to seeing you at the launch and/or on the internet!

Curator insights - Contemporary galleries

Spanning a broad array of material practices and media, Ugo Rondinone’s works are often unsettling and deal with themes of isolation and disenchantment. At once distinct and interrelated, the works installed in this room cross-pollinate, shaping a single narrative. The looped conversation of the wall and sound installation ‘what do you want?’ suggests a relationship permeated with miscommunication, doubt and loneliness. Coupled with this soundtrack, the reclining clown in ‘if there were anywhere but desert. wednesday’ appears bored and disaffected. In a similar vein of inversion and directionlessness, ‘all MOMENTS stop here and together we become every memory that has ever been.’ resembles a window, yet rather than opening onto a view, it reflects the interior space back onto itself in sombre black tones.
