In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus calls men and women to follow him. This discipleship in which he calls them to, does not take place in a traditional classroom or student-teacher setting. This discipelship takes place in the "everyday" aspects of life: walking along the road, attending celebrations, and having conversations in the local water hole. We are called to the same life of faith...one that is ACTIVE. During this next season of our church, we desire to shift our discipleship into an active, purposeful endeavor. as we approach the joy of Easter, we learn a singular focus on God's call is His desire for our lives. This radical view of discipleship is the only way for growth to truly happen. Passage: Matthew 12:22-37 We have three worship opportunities for you to experience. We have our Sanctuary Service ("blended") at 9am. Our Online Service begins at 9:30am at pointlomachurch.org. And our Chapel Service ("modern") starts at 10:30am. In this episode, Andrew interviews Jeff Schiefelbein, co-founder and culture catalyst for Undivided Life. Andrew questions Jeff about his role as a culture catalyst, and the pair discusses just how important culture is to organizations of all sizes. Jeff describes how he encourages organizations to build transformative, loving cultures of excellence.
Sermon preached by Andrew Brown over James 4:11-5:11 on 10-23-22
“I bet half of our anxiety is the energy of trying to remember which hat to put on in my relationship with [others]…And people end up becoming a less real version of themselves. …Why can't we be fully present to this process, and not have to put anything on the side - not try to take away the personal parts of who we are?” Showing up fully human What if I told you it's possible to bring your full self to the workplace? Jeff Shiefelbein thinks it's not possible, but necessary for forming humans and building great cultures. Jeff and I discuss how draining it is to change our personalities depending on where we are and who we're with. The expectations to leave your heart and your personality at the door when you come to work are changing. Jeff also explains the magnetism of authenticity and how facing difficult topics can help form connections and trust. He speaks with experience: The company he co-founded has won multiple Best Places to Work awards, as well as five consecutive appearances on the Inc 5,000 fastest growing companies in America. His tenets behind the “Undivided Life” have contributed to this success. You'll also hear how a run-in with the law in college inspired him to launch a nationwide nonprofit that has likely saved hundreds of lives. At its core, successful businesses are comprised of engaged people working in concert. Authenticity opens doors “As you step into these bold moments of living, the way we're actually designed to be, show up…what comes after [is] the freedom, mentorship, accountability, cool opportunities that you could have never predicted in your life. It's because people feel like they know you, they might start to connect to you because you're speaking and leaving a message that they have buried in their heart.” Create connections at a micro-level for macro-change “You start to develop this trusting relationship…And if you can keep building, your circle gets bigger and bigger, the ripples get further and further apart. You're this pocket of people that you have a trusting and loving relationship with, and you're connecting…even if our big giant company or whatever organization has cultures within it that are toxic, let's just make the part that's right around us a place we like to come to. And that begets confidence; it begets this sense of ‘this is possible.'” Caring about people leads to organization success “You don't run the business by metrics, you run your run it by getting highly engaged, fully formed adults, loving, trusting, and empowering them, and getting out of their way…therefore, I think the whole health of that person becomes an input to the company's long-term health and success.” “An undivided life also respects the fact that we weren't made to be 24/7 working machines that are 24/7 available. There's a dignity and respect to that person - that if I recognize the personal side of who they are, I also respect their personal time.” Resources mentioned in this episode: Undivided Life: https://www.undivided.life Connect with Jeff Schiefelbein on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/schiefelbein Energy By 5: https://www.energyby5.com Rise Leaders interview with Nathan Havey - Episode 60: https://rise-leaders.com/podcast/ Link between Heart Attacks and Monday Mornings study: https://www.menshealth.com/health/a19524979/heart-attack-timing/ To subscribe to the Rise Leaders newsletter for more resources: https://mailchi.mp/426e78bc9538/subscribe To discuss executive coaching, leadership development program design, and workshop facilitation, please visit: https://rise-leaders.com/contact-info/

I am thrilled to introduce you to today’s guest, Dr. Parker J. Palmer, a prolific author of ten books and thought leader. This conversation felt perfectly timed for me personally, and I can’t wait for you to listen to it too. Parker has such a grounded and clear way of articulating profound ideas and human experiences. One such idea he has coined is what he calls the tragic gap. This is the tension between reality and possibility. He explains how he came to terms with this truth many years ago as a student and was feeling discouragement and despair during the civil rights movement in the 60s. Coming to terms with reality but also being aware of the possibilities if only the world didn’t push back. He describes it as a kind of a death, the death of a dream. So many of us are navigating these tragic gaps in our personal lives and the world at large. He describes who he calls culture heroes like Martin Luther King Jr. and Nelson Mandela and how they found ways to keep showing up without letting the needs of the world or the tragic gap overwhelm them. Parker suggests that it’s a fact that we are constantly caught between the harsh realities of the world, but it is possible to reframe our lives and the way we experience this gap that can make it more liveable. One of those ways is by coming back closer to ourselves and seeing what our individual role to play in the bigger picture can be. He suggests asking these questions, which I will now be asking myself regularly, Am I being faithful to my gifts? To the needs I see around me and to the places my gifts might intersect those needs? In asking yourself these questions, this helps you stay the course and not get overwhelmed by all of it. We all have a role to play and if we can remain faithful to our gifts, we will keep moving forward. “Am I being faithful to my gifts? To the needs I see around me and to the places my gifts might intersect those needs?” ~ Dr. Parker J. Palmer I asked Parker about how he knows when to quit something because over time, sticking to something becomes more stubborn than resilient if it’s just not working. His answer was perfect. He suggests asking yourself, is this thing I’m doing still life-giving or is it death-dealing? We also talk about what he thinks happens when we die and how he has been intrigued since a very young age about death and where we go. He shares that he has been walking with mystery and questions his whole life, dancing with them even. Toward the end of our conversation Parker shared very candidly about his personal experience of clinical depression, when he decided it was time to write about those experiences and what being able to speak about that has meant to him instead of hiding that part of himself. The way he describes those moments in his life with such honesty and compassion, both for himself and others experiencing it is something that I hope everyone will listen to. It is time to stop living a divided life. When your life is divided between home and work, personal and professional, you're vulnerable to all sorts of relationship troubles and everyday friction. When you separate yourself from your values and see your business and life divided instead of integrated and unified by your purpose and values, you will break from the pressure of it all. You feel out of alignment with what matters most–your health, your values, your most important relationships–and feel at the mercy of responding to every need like it is an emergency, further sacrificing your clarity and confidence. My guest today has done the work to get clear on how she leads herself and others and not letting fear divide her from what she values and who she loves most. Stasia Svasuk is an entrepreneur, mama, speaker, adventurer, thrifter, and science-of-style expert who thinks bodies are just about the coolest things on earth. She is the founder and creator of THE REVEL-YOU-TION––an online community of crazy-brave women who are using their closets to heal their shame, flex their brave muscles, cultivate their creativity, and create some wildly fabulous outfits while they're at it. Stasia has inspired many thousands through her Tedx talk, her wildly popular (and now retired) Stasia's Style School, her numerous podcast recordings and guest speaker gigs, and her ability to cultivate a community where collective braving and collective healing are the name of the game. We cover some incredible territory in this episode around work, life, and family integration. Listen to the full episode to hear: How our closets are a Trailhead for doing deep, meaningful work about how you feel in your body How Stasia realized that teaching women to turn down the temperature on their body shame wasn't enough and how she's changing her business to do it How she's learning to feel into her boundaries and take ownership of the consequences, good and bad How her relationships with her clothes let her know when she's out of alignment elsewhere in her life Learn more about Stasia Savasuk: stasiasavasuk.com Instagram: @stasiasavasuk Facebook: @welcometotherevelyoution Learn more about Rebecca: rebeccaching.com Work With Rebecca Sign up for the Weekly Rumble Email Resources A Hidden Wholeness: The Journey Toward an Undivided Life by Parker J. Scott and Troy talk about season one of This Undivided Life and look forward to season number 2. It's a birthday not only celebrating our show and guests but you the listener.
DEVOTIONAL In Psalm 86:11 David prayed, “Teach me your way, LORD, that I may rely on your faithfulness; give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name.” (NIV) So often we think of worship as something we do on Sunday and work as something we do on Monday. I want to encourage you to live a whole life. A life that is whole—where “soul and role” are aligned. It's time to break down the divide between the sacred and the secular, between the church and the world, between your spiritual life and the ‘rest of our life.' Remove the Sunday-Monday Gap. Connect your Sunday faith to Monday work! Do it all as an act of worship and for the Glory of God!

Discovering your authentic self is something that can seem like a vague or cliche notion. Is there a balance between authentic inner life and authentic communal life? Where are the tensions? What does it even mean to be your authentic self? These are some of the questions explored in this episode as Allen, Bonnie, Jeff & Rajeev discuss the difficult task of figuring out our place in this insane world. Self awareness and our relation to one another become prominent talking points during this conversation. Self reflection, along with a solid community, can be powerful allies in our journeys toward peace about who we are and what we are becoming. The episode closed with a new segment called One of These Things IS Like The Other. A game where two things are compared to a completely different thing. "It’s hard to listen when we don’t want to know, or to be known." So much of life is spent with people talking past each other. Being listened to deeply is a rare experience, but a profound gift. Let us, as a community, consider how we listen and what gets in the way of true connection. Carlos Whittaker is a People’s Choice Award winner, a former recording artist signed to a major label, a social media maven, and currently spends the majority of his time writing books and speaking on stages around the world. It really began when the Whittaker’s found their family in America’s spotlight with appearances on shows like CBS Early Morning, The Today Show and more when their viral video “Single Ladies Devastation” went viral. But for Carlos, his wife Heather and their three children, this viral moment was just a snapshot of the bigger picture.

Today's guest is Sara Gallagher. Sara is the Vice President of Client Delivery, a Senior Consultant, Speaker, and Learning Facilitator at The Persimmon Group. In this episode, we talk about: The lessons she's learned and unlearned during her career, Impostor syndrome, mindfulness, and self-awareness, The importance of self-inquiry, Time/Energy Management, and a lot more. Click that play button to listen, and don't forget to rate us on iTunes! Leaders need to be self-aware You have to develop the skill of self-inquiry. “What is this?” “What am I feeling?” “Why do I feel it?” And stay with that train of thought. Don't accept your first answer as true. If meditation is too woo-woo for you, that might be something you could do and achieve the same type of awareness and result. Be your kind of leader If you're familiar with Myers-Briggs, I'm an INTJ. INTJ's are always the villain. I'm Emperor Palpatine in Which Star Wars Character Are You?, I'm the butler from Downton Abbey. My boss, Bill, is an ENTJ. We approach things in very much the same way, except that he's very much an extrovert and I'm an introvert in an extroverted job. One thing I was doing wrong (for me) for a long time was I was trying to be an ENTJ because that's what was being modeled for me. And I was exhausting myself. I have things I bring to the table, but I can't work as many hours, in the same hours, in the same types of hours – meaning, always with people – that Bill can, and be successful. It's being honest about that, and realizing that to be at my best, I will have to approach things my way. Letting go of the belief that you have to be what has been modeled for you is really important. Sara's advice to New Leaders I think when you first become a leader, you rush out to the bookstore or podcast menu and you look for “How do I fix other people?” “How do I get my team to do x?” “How do I get them to do y?” “How do we achieve results?” And those are really valuable skills, but it's so easy to lose touch with your own growth and your own development, and to forget that you still have growing to do. Never invest more into someone's personal development than they're willing to put in themselves. Be others-focused, but also realize that that doesn't mean you're now the camp director over everybody's professional development. Lighting the Chalice: Sermons from the First Unitarian Universalist Church of Berks County
READING: excerpt from Hope and Other Superpowers by John Pavlovitz "We all love to see superheroes being born in pages or on-screen. There’s something magical about those beginnings that moves us. . . . It’s thrilling to watch human beings mutating from nondescript, regular schlubs like you and me into the monumental stuff of legend, to see them struggle to comprehend the gravity of the moment, to recognize the responsibility of access to such great power—and ultimately to run, swing, or fly headlong into their destiny. Over and over again we line up to breathe in these mythologies, because we love the idea of being thrust into stratospheric glory instead of being stuck here on the ground with the rest of the mere mortals and gawking bystanders..." The American Trappist monk Thomas Merton said that “there is in all things . . . a hidden wholeness.” The Gospel of Thomas, one of the gospels that did not make it into the official Bible, teaches that “If you bring forth what is within you, what you bring forth will save you. If you do not bring forth what is within you, what you do not bring forth will destroy you.”

We are born with an inherent wholeness. We learn of the creative power of thought. We are intrigued by the wonder of it. We can become fascinated with the fact that thought is creative, that what we think takes form in our experience to some degree. We begin to use this law for every possible purpose for the benefit of ourselves and for others. We often go through a phase of treating to control people and things. Most of us pass through this phase. We then move on to treat to control our own mind and our own consciousness. Of this, Emerson said, "We must stay at home with the Cause." Wholeness is the experience of staying at home with the Cause.

Sermon delivered by Senior Minister Rev. Alan Taylor on February 12, 2017. Audre Lorde wrote, “It is not our differences that divide us. It is our inability to recognize, accept, and celebrate our differences.” As Unitarian Universalists, we are prone to minimizing differences among us. But our faith, at its best, calls us to cultivate integrity and claim who we really are as individuals and live not only an undivided life but cultivate an undivided community. The theme for February is what it means to be a community of identity. To read about our theme-based ministry, please visit http://www.unitytemple.org/faith-development/soul-connections on our website.
