Podcast transcript Oscar Santolalla: This week we are discussing verifiable credentials. I am joined by Riley Hughes, the host of The Future of Identity Podcast, to explore some of the most recent success stories of verifiable credentials and how we can work to improve adoption moving forward. Stay tuned to find out more. Let's Talk About Digital Identity, the podcast connecting identity and business. I am your host, Oscar Santolalla. Hello, and thank you for joining a new episode over Let's Talk About Digital Identity. One term that has been in our radar for the last - I would say four or five years has been verifiable credentials. Which I will say personally, I'm feeling that is becoming in the last one, two years pretty crystallised. And we have not talked too much about this lately, so I have a very special guest who has a lot of insight - what's going on worldwide about verifiable credentials. Our guest today is Riley Hughes. He is the CEO and Co-founder of Trinsic, a reusable identity infrastructure provider. As a leader in the decentralised identity community, Riley has pioneered efforts on making emerging privacy preserving technologies - such as identity wallets and verifiable credentials - adoptable to the masses. He began his career in the decentralised identity space as the second employee hired at the Sovrin Foundation, where he established and led several teams. Hello, Riley. Riley Hughes: Hi, Oscar. Great to be here. Oscar: It's great to have this conversation with you. So very welcome. And let's talk about digital identity. And as usual, I want to hear more about our guests. So, if you can tell us about yourself, and especially your journey to this world of identity. Riley: Happy to do so. I am very fortunate to have totally fallen into this amazing industry. And it happened because while I was at college, I was seeing all those smart people around me going and getting jobs at elite places, you know, investment banks and management consulting firms, and so forth. And I thought that I wanted to kind of differentiate my resume enough that I could, maybe I could get an interview as well at one of these places. So, I thought, “What is the most, kind of, off the wall internship that I could get that would differentiate me from all of my peers?” And I ended up getting a job at the Sovrin Foundation, as you mentioned. Sovrin at that time was very early. I was, as mentioned, the second employee hired, and it was kind of a blockchain meets identity meets nonprofit, you know, meets early employee kind of a role. And so, it, sort of, fit my criteria for differentiating my resume. But it was also just really, really exciting to be part of an early organisation.
As online degree programs, like Coursera, grow in popularity, so does fraud. Verifiable credentials, using decentralized identity technology, provide a solution by allowing instant credential verification. Online learning is revolutionizing education and micro credentialing is a key aspect of this transformation. On the Voices of eLearning podcast, Nick Lambert, CEO of Duck, discussed the importance of micro-credentials and fraud protection.

Welcome to "Micro-credentials in a Minute," produced by Micro-credential Multiverse. In this episode, micro-credential and digital badge experts Rob Bajor and Allison Fromm (Proofspace.id) discuss some compelling use cases for Verifiable Credentials (VCs). Allison explains that VCs allow credential holders control over their data and provide a means for anyone to easily verify the accuracy of that data - without compromising security and privacy. The best use cases for VCs are when data holders regularly share their data, and others must verify its accuracy. For example, students need to share their credentials with recruiters, employers, and educational institutions, while specialized employees need to present their accreditation information to employers, regulators, and clients. Allison further highlights the power of VCs in the "issue once; verify repeatedly" model, eliminating the need to contact issuing organizations for sealed transcripts repeatedly. With VCs, the holder can control and present their credentials to anyone, while verifiers can have assurance over the data. Tune in to learn more about the power of VCs in digital credentials.
Welcome to "Micro-credentials in a Minute," produced by Micro-credential Multiverse. In this episode, micro-credential and digital badge experts Rob Bajor and Allison Fromm (Proofspace.id) share their insights and discuss how Verifiable Credentials (VCs) can reduce costs for recruiters. Allison explains that anyone can make any claim they want about themselves online, which creates a verification process that costs time and money for recruiters. However, if candidates present their skills and experiences in the form of a verifiable credential, recruiters can easily and automatically check the accuracy of that information. Sharing data via VCs can save money, speed up the process, and create a better experience for everyone involved. Rob adds that verifying information online is crucial for building trust; without it, the principle of trust is undermined. Join Rob and Allison to learn more about the power of VCs in reducing costs for recruiters and building trust in the digital world.
Welcome to "Micro-credentials in a Minute," produced by Micro-credential Multiverse. In this episode, micro-credential and digital badge experts Rob Bajor and Allison Fromm (Proofspace.id) discuss the power of Verifiable Credentials (VCs). They explain that while digital certificates or credentials are easy to forge and alter, VCs provide a means for anyone to quickly verify the accuracy of the data presented without compromising security and privacy. Schools can send VCs directly to the holder's digital wallet, allowing the holder to control their data and decide when and how much information to share. VCs represent a breakthrough in independently verifying the authenticity of a credential and promoting transparency and trust. He co-founded Dentity to solve the trust problem in peer-to-peer transactions and discusses the surprising breadth of use cases they're already tackling, from frat parties to notaries.Jeffrey then drops loads of knowledge about what he's learned building a consumer product, from the user experience and onboarding lessons learned, to the messaging that resonates with consumers and businesses (including overcoming the baggage with the term “web3”).Jeffrey continues with a bit of a hot take about the role of industry working groups and standards bodies, and how he prefers doing over talking. He explains how their single-minded focus on customers and product has been key to their success, and how they've balanced developing a great user-experience with the principles of self-sovereign identity.Learn more about Dentity at https://www.dentity.com/ and reach out to Jeffrey (jeffrey (at) dentity.com). Andrew Hughes CISM CISSP is Director of Identity Standards at Ping Identity. He is a digital identity strategist contributing to international standards development. He works with international associations and standards bodies as a domain expert, developing standards and related conformity assessment materials. Andrew serves on the Board of Directors of Kantara Initiative, and as the Chair of the Kantara Leadership Council. As a national expert delegate for Standards Canada on digital identity, he contributes to development of international standards at ISO SC 27 for identity management and ISO SC 17 for mobile driving licenses and mobile eID. Andrew is currently investigating how the worlds of Government Issued Photo ID can co-exist with the emerging Verifiable Credentials models, in a mobile-first manner. About Podcast Episode Read more about the episode by heading to https://northernblock.io/mobile-driving-licence-mdl-exploring-iso-18013-5-7. Some of the key topics covered during this episode with Andrew are: Distinguishing the mobile driving licence (mDL) credential type from a verifiable credential (VC). How the mDL standard is working towards being consumed by other credential transport protocols (e.g., DIDComm, OIDC4VC) Can the same ISO standard for mDL be used to issue non-driving licence credentials? And should it? Do issuers of driving licences consider mDL it as a driving licence credential, or an identity credential? What does the ecosystem look like for mDL vs the one for physical driving licences? Who are some new participants that aren't involved in physical DL production and governance? Why implementation supersedes the standard work. What are some interesting use cases around mDL that are gaining traction? How ISO works and how the relevant mDL sub-committees are evolving the standard. Are there concerns with the mobile hardware and OS providers gaining too much control over the mDL credentials? Hello and welcome to Crypto Sapiens Today we are chatting with Henry Lee, Co-founder of Noox, a platform where you collect achievement badges as soulbound NFTs and build your reputation. We briefly explore his crypto journey, starting with a Layer 1 blockchain that he helped launch focusing on interoperability, where he also worked on Decentralized Identity and Verifiable Credentials. In 2021 Noox was born. Henry recalls the landscape was very much focused on NFTs then, with a few projects using transaction history to reward users, gate communities, and provide airdrops. The vision of NOOX was to add more context to understand users in a more high-dimensional manner and evolve user tiering. They set out to find a way to contextualize user interactions and transaction data. While the MVP looked very different than today's product, the vision was always the same: to enable data as a composable piece of the web3 ecosystem. JPMorgan has executed the first live trade on public blockchain. The banking giant completed the transaction using DeFi, Tokenized Deposits, and Verifiable Credentials. Project Guardian is an initiative of MAS with financial institutions such as JP Morgan, Marketnode, and DBS Bank Ltd. Its focus is on use cases for asset tokenization and DeFi. Orange is a reputation and trust minting protocol that aggregates data and Web3 reputation models to generate comprehensive reputation proofs in the form of Verifiable Credentials and NFTs. It can be used to objectively calculate and assess the "reputation" for a Decentralized Identifier (DID), and associated wallet addresses. It takes multiple data points into account to assess user behavior and preferences. User data can be processed and manifested as "minted reputation" to be stored, exchanged, and used in different forms, such as Verifiable Credentials (VCs), or NFTs. Today's guest is Humpty Calderon. Humpty is perhaps best known around Bankless DAO for CryptoSapiens, a web3 podcast series that got its start as “Tuesday Talks” inside the Bankless DAO Discord server in mid 2021. The SSI Orbit Podcast – Self-Sovereign Identity, Decentralization and Web3
- Filling holes in the web3 stack - This was a very fun and interesting conversation with Lauren Feld, Head of Growth at 3Box Labs, a company building the Ceramic Network. The Ceramic Network in my opinion is one the most exciting projects in the web3 space. Ceramic is a decentralized, open source platform for creating, hosting, and sharing streams of data. This is interesting to consider in a decentralized identity context. As we all know, we leave massive traces of ourselves in the digital world. The products that have enabled user generated content in the web2 world have dramatically increased the volume of data we leave behind. If this data is valuable, which social media companies can attest is true, then how could this data be returned to the rightful generator/owner of it,. How can it also be made portable across different applications? On this podcast we often talk about Verifiable Credentials and recently a bit more about government issued digital IDs. I hope this conversation gives listeners some excitement about what's now being made possible with some exciting bottom-up approaches and how turning the data layer of applications into a public utility is the logical evolution of the web. About Episode During this conversation, we discuss: What excites Lauren about web3 applications? What is the pulse on DAOs to incorporate Decentralized ID into them? The importance of Mutability An overview of Decentralized Data Storage Ecosystems, in particular IPFS, one of first protocols in the web3 space What makes Data Composability important for open data layers? How to go about building Distributed Data Models?

The SSI Orbit Podcast – Self-Sovereign Identity, Decentralization and Web3
About Episode In this conversation, I sit down with Stepan Gershuni for the second time on this pod, the first time being in Episode 9 when we talked about the Economics of Self-Sovereign Identity. If you haven't listened to that one I suggest you do as it was a very interesting conversation that looked into how SSI can be applied to paper based and web2 models, and then dove a bit into web3. This conversation is more focused on the impact of SSI on web3, where the main conversation point is around DAOs (which is an acronym for decentralized autonomous organizations). A DAO is the web3 version of a company or a community. Think of it this way, if an NFT represents a piece of digital media, a DAO represents a whole media company. In the conversation, we discuss: What are DAOs? How DAOs are the next logical evolution of coordination mechanisms for communities & companies. How DAOs are really just a mix of Decentralized ID + Reputation. How the adoption of Verifiable Credentials with DAOs and open protocols can take off very quick within the next year. How a DAO can be an Issuer/Verifier of Verifiable Credentials. The need for decentralized reputation mechanisms and trust scores. About Guest Stepan Gershuni is the Lead Product Manager at Affinidi, Founder of Credentia (SSI for education in Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan) and also as a hobby runs the Crypto-economics Research Group, a meetup for all things decentralized/web3.
